The oldest name for this book is Torah HaCohanim, the Law of the Priests. What we read at the end of the Book of Exodus was the building of the Mishkan, the tabernacle in the wilderness. Not only the Mishkan, but all the accoutrements in it, the fabrics, the vessels, and even the clothing of the priests are in the text. In this book, we move next to the rituals and practices that went on in the Mishkan, specifically the sacrifices. In the ancient world, offerings and animal sacrifices in various religions were the norm and ancient Israel was no different. Make no mistake about it, Israel’s ritual, worship and intention was different from the people surrounding her. Also, if your income and wealth is measured in terms of livestock and agriculture, then a portion of your livelihood would be the natural contribution. from a pledge made for a favorable outcome, or as atonement for some sin or wrongdoing. There were also collective sacrifices on behalf of all Israel, on a daily basis or on special occasions. While these sacrifices seem like an obsolete, outdated exercise in ‘old time’ Judaism, the general ideas concerning them were critical in formulating the Judaism we practice today, often referred to a rabbinic Judaism. For the ritual that was the practical form of worship in Vayikra had to change with the destruction of the Temple. As was pointed out by a number of rabbis and scholars, the Hebrew words for sacrifice, korban and lehakriv, mean to come close. While the reasoning and methods bridging the ancient practice and our modern one is convoluted, that’s the essence of what our synagogue services are trying to do. Our prayers are our collective and individual way of connecting and coming close to God. Whether we come to pray for our or another’s wellbeing or connect with something outside of ourselves, the basic instinct is still there as it was in ancient Israel. There was one other sacrifice written in the Book of Exodus that was done outside the Temple, not by priests but by families and groups. We all know this very well for it is something we are about to celebrate - the korban pesach, the Passover sacrifice. It too was changed after destruction of the 2nd Temple into the present day form of the Seder. And the symbol representing the original sacrifice is the burnt shank bone on the Seder plate. I wish you a good Passover with friends and family and hope to see you at PJC over the holiday. From the President’s Desk………………………….Robert E. Korfin Since the beginning of 2018 there have been a rash of school shootings. In fact, MSNBC reports 17 school shootings in just 45 days. The recent massacre in Parkland, Florida was the 17th. I think about the tragic loss of children who were killed at school; at school. We worry about our kids walking to school or being injured on a school bus but, we can relax once they walk into the school, not anymore. My heart goes out to kids who had their lives plucked away in what was always considered a safe place. And my heart goes out to the parents and grandparents of these children. Thoughts and prayers should go to the first responders who witness sights that will remain in their minds for the rest of their lives. They train and train and train for such atrocities but when the real thing occurs; well there isn’t enough training for them to prepare for what they observe. It’s funny how our minds respond to these horrific events. In my case, I think about my Father who died over 32 years ago. When these terrible things happen, lives are lost, my Dad would wait until the culprit or killer was revealed and would very often say, “Thank God, it wasn’t a Jew.” If memory serves me, the first time Dad said those words was when President Kennedy was assassinated, when the name Lee Harvey Oswald was announced. The thought of my Father came to me at Columbine, the church shootings in Southland, Texas or another church in Charleston, SC, a nightclub in Orlando, a country music festival in Las Vegas, and elementary school in Newtown, CT, and the list goes on and on. You can imagine how crushed Dad was when the serial killer in New York City was named David Berkowitz. That a Jew could kill 7 innocent people in Manhattan or any of the locations listed above would be unthinkable. I can only imagine the shame after hearing the revelations that have been levied against Harvey Weinstein. Dad would probable say, “What, it’s not hard enough being a Jew? PJC is a very special congregation. Other shuls are consumed in synagogue politics and competition between members on any and all issues. The way these Jews treat each other Dad would say, "they treat each other so badly the world could relax its anti-semitism." But that’s for another day and then we’ll talk again.
