Unity in the church is a must for today’s ministryAgree or Disagree?1. Many Christians are uncertain with current issues: homosexuality, same sex marriage, immigration/refugees, homeless/poverty2. Many people left the church or stop going to church for reason of hostile relationship and division in the church3. Division gives birth to barriers for effective ministry, witness and proclamation of the Gospel.

Our thought for this workshop

The church is not bullet proof for division, butit is Christ proof for unity.

Our thought for this workshopWe can’t prevent difference of opinions and matter of practices and non-essential tenets in the church (in fact, we are to respect them), but we can help people growing in their walk with Jesus Christ. Unity can be achieved when we have Christ as our center in life. Unity makes easier when we grow or are transformed from membership to discipleship.

Division in the church frequently happens if… Membership privilege & entitlement Leadership spiritually immature Activities/events focus Internal focus Individual focus (as opp to Christ-centered) No clear expectation…Thus, chaos, confusion and frustration give rise to division

Unity in SpiritPhilippians 2:1-2Therefore if you have any encouragement from being united with Christ, if any comfort from his love, if any common sharing in the Spirit, if any tenderness and compassion, 2 then make my joy complete by being like-minded, having the same love, being one in Spirit and of one mind.

Ephesians 4:3-43 Make every effort to keep the unity of the Spirit through the bond of peace. 4 There is one body and one Spirit, just as you were called to one hope when you were called

Regardless of the style of worship, the manner of baptism or the way they dress all Christians hold to these 12 points.

1.I believe in God the Father almighty, creator of heaven and earth.2.I believe in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord.3.He was conceived by the power of the Holy Spirit and born of the Virgin Mary.4.Under Pontius Pilate, He was crucified, died, and was buried.5.He descended to the dead. On the third day he rose again.6.He ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father.7.He will come again to judge the living and the dead.8.I believe in the Holy Spirit,9.the holy catholic Church, the communion of saints,10.the forgiveness of sins,11.the resurrection of the body,12.and the life everlasting.   Amen.

Unity in PurposeActs 1:88 ”But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes on you; and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth.”

Matthew 28:18-2018 Then Jesus came to them and said, “All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me.19 Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, 20 and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age.”

Unity in DiversityRomans 14:1, 13Accept the one whose faith is weak, without quarreling over disputable matters… 13 Therefore let us stop passing judgment on one another. Instead, make up your mind not to put any stumbling block or obstacle in the way of a brother or sister.

Ephesians 4:7,11-12,167 But to each one of us grace has been given as Christ apportioned it… 11 So Christ himself gave the apostles, the prophets, the evangelists, the pastors and teachers, 12 to equip his people for works of service, so that the body of Christ may be built up… 16 From him the whole body, joined and held together by every supporting ligament, grows and builds itself up in love, as each part does its work.

Unity in Practices1 Corinthians 11:23 For I received from the Lord what I also passed on to you: The Lord Jesus, on the night he was betrayed, took bread, 24 and when he had given thanks, he broke it and said, “This is my body, which is for you; do this in remembrance of me.” 25 In the same way, after supper he took the cup, saying, “This cup is the new covenant in my blood; do this, whenever you drink it, in remembrance of me.” 26 For whenever you eat this bread and drink this cup, you proclaim the Lord’s death until he comes.

Unity is power of ministry for all. More importantly, it is a process of discipleship development. As we grow in our relationship with Jesus Christ and in the knowledge of God, unity is possible (Eph. 4:12b-13)11 So Christ himself gave the apostles, the prophets, the evangelists, the pastors and teachers, 12 to equip his people for works of service, so that the body of Christ may be built up 13 until we all reach unity in the faith and in the knowledge of the Son of God and become mature, attaining to the whole measure of the fullness of Christ.
