Campus on Sun, Dec 18, at Christmas Communion Sunday services, and at all 10 worship services on Christmas Eve at Mpls. What a great opportunity to invite friends to come to worship!

Th anks, thanks, and ever thanks to our call committee. Th is group worked tirelessly, effi ciently, and carefully to lead us to this moment of celebration. As one member put it, “Th ey got it right twice – in bringing PASTOR HOGENSON and in this decision that brings PASTOR LOSE to Mount Olivet.”

Like Martin Luther himself, our new pastor knows that the main function of preaching is to point to the Christ-child and to speak of God’s “unspeakable gift” to humankind. “All my heart this night rejoices.” (ELW, 273). Please do yourself and your family a favor by being present for as many of these celebrations as you can.

Stewardship 2017 Update“Grace Changes Everything” As of Oct 31, we are up 86 pledgers for 2017 vs 2016. 86 more pledgers who see the benefi t of Mount Olivet and its ministries. 86 more pledgers who understand the importance of giving back. 86 more pledgers who have committed their resources to God for 2017 with joy and gratitude. Additionally, several new pledges came in from people who had not previously pledged for 2016. Th anks be! Overall, our pledged revenue for 2017 is up 2% from 2016. Th is is better than the growing trend of reversal, but there is always work to be done to inspire giving which funds our programs, ministries, and worship opportunities – ultimately funding our ability to spread the Gospel to a world so very in need of hearing it. Our Stewardship Dinners were attended by nearly 2100 members, upholding the long-standing Mount Olivet tradition of gathering over food to celebrate, thank, and look ahead! A new initiative, Youth Stewardship Giving Sundays, began Sep 25, and will continue on three more specifi c Sundays through Mar 19. Th e goal of these Giving Sundays is to remind our Hi-Leaguers and Cathedral Choir members that they are important members of our congregation, that their participation in giving matters, and to provide eff ective opportunities to do just that. Th ank you to all who have made your pledge for 2017. Th ank you to all who have committed to Mount Olivet and its ministries for another wonderful year. We are grateful for all givers. Th is church is what it is because of the members and friends who grace its doorways. We are blessed – and we are privileged to be a blessing to others.

If you have not yet pledged, you may do so online at www.mtolivet.org or by contacting Amy Nelson at 612.767.2255 [email protected] or completing a pledge form available at either church offi ce.

The Rev. Dr. Robin Steinkecame to Luther Seminary as president in June 2014. She is the fi rst woman president in the 145-year history of the seminary. From 1999 to 2014, Steinke was the dean of the seminary and professor of theological ethics and public life at Lutheran Th eological Seminary at Gettysburg. Steinke is known for her strategic leadership and passion for sharing the gospel. She will be preaching on Sun 12/11 at the Mpls Campus. Welcome!

Stir Up Our Hearts Stir up our

hearts, Lord! Stir up our hearts and come! WE NEED YOU!

Th is is the very essence of the Advent Season. Advent is the time specifi cally set aside on the church calendar to prepare our hearts and our minds for Jesus. To mark His coming as special, uber-important, sacred.

And so we pause. We refl ect. We give our Savior his due.

And if the thought of slowing down and pausing makes you squirm, if the sheer mention of ‘taking time’ for, well, anything really, makes you skip over the words before they even have a moment to sink in … I’m with you! But, we CAN do it, with God’s help.

Th ere’s a billboard on a corner that I wait at each morning. It’s titled “It Only Takes a Moment.” One day it was a photo of a mom and her child snuggling under a blanket. Th e next it was a dad and his daughter jumping in puddles – their huge smiles shining through the clear umbrella. Its purpose is to remind us that it doesn’t require hopping on a plane to an exotic locale, or dedicating hour after hour to make memories with someone you love, sometimes it’s just an intentional 10 minutes of one-on-one time. A “Here I am, totally focused on you” moment. TV’s off , phone is set aside, I am yours.

Let’s dedicate 10 minutes today, whether you’re a morning person or a night owl, to say, “Here I am, Jesus. Totally focused on you. TV’s off , phone’s not near me, I am yours.” – PASTOR MONICA hAMMERSTEN

Children’s Christmas Program Sat 12/10 10am, Mpls & West Campuses. Featuring: Cherub, Alleluia, and Hosanna Choirs, and the instrumental ensemble Joyful Noise! Th eir sweet voices and joy-fi lled faces proclaim the good news that “Christ is born!”

Christmas Concerts Sun 12/11 3pm or 5pm, Mpls Campus. You are invited to attend Mount Olivet’s Annual Christmas Concert! Th is favorite Christmas event features the Mpls Senior Choir; combined Cathedral, Chapel and Chancel Choirs; and Chancel Ringers. Come and enjoy the beautiful music as

over 600 singers and ringers proclaim the joy of Christ’s birth in song! Admission is free.

Christmas Early Worship & Dinner Wed 12/14, Worship 6pm, Dinner 6:30pm, Mpls & West. We off er this service early in the week for those who are traveling or unable to worship on Christmas Eve. Come hear the story of Christ’s birth with special music by our Chancel Choir off ered in the beautiful settings of our seasonally decorated Mount Olivet sanctuaries. Following the services, join us for a turkey dinner with all the trimmings and dessert. Dinner cost: $10. Register: www.mtolivet.org.

Th is Advent season we invite you to fi nd moments to slow down, to wait for the coming Christ child, and to embrace the gift of God’s grace in humble, human form. • Spend some extra moments in the sanctuary Sunday morning

before our worship services, listening to the prelude and refl ecting on the Advent wreath and Christ’s increasing light in the world.

• Stop by the Mpls Campus for the 10am Wednesday morning Prayer & Praise services when we lift up Martin Luther’s hymn “From Heaven Above” and set our hearts on Jesus –“God’s Wondrous Gift,” “A Prince So Great,” “Th e Blessed Child.”

• Create your own pauses in the holiday hype to treasure the reason for the season as you read God’s Word or enjoy sacred music.

• Taking inspiration from our 95 Acts of Service challenge, make this an Advent season of service, fi nding simple and random acts of kindness to share the gift of God’s love and grace.

Whatever you do, we pray Advent 2016 is a time of waiting and wonderment for you and your loved ones. May you feel the hope, joy, peace, and love of God’s presence as you prepare for the Christmas gift of Jesus Christ.

Staff Updates DR. GARY WILkERSON, director of Mount Olivet Counseling Service since 2008, has announced his retirement, effective Feb 16, 2017. A search for his replacement will begin soon. It is our intent to have a new person in place by Feb 1, to ensure an orderly transition. We will have an opportunity to thank Dr. Wilkerson as his departure draws near. However, we want to express our gratitude for his years of service, and for his sage advice, not only to clients and members, but for his participation in our weekly pastors’ meetings. He will be available for workshops, retreats, and other opportunities for Christian insights into relationships and mental / emotional health issues. Thank you, Gary!

kATE BELSCHNER will be joining our junior high youth staff at the West Campus. Kate helped with The Way program at the West Campus this past year. She also has been a summer intern with our Children & Family Ministry team and with our King’s Kids program at the Conference & Retreat Center. Kate graduated from Gustavus Adolphus College this past spring.

kATIE MARXHAUSEN has accepted the position of Coordinator of Congregational Engagement. In the past, we have called this position the Volunteer Coordinator. Katie will be building upon on the good work that Cindy Johnson has done with engagement and will assist Mount Olivet staff in their ministries, and, more importantly, help our members to engage more fully in all the ministries of Mount Olivet.

from Heaven Above One of my favorite devotional writers is

Frederick Buechner. In one of his books he writes that we all live “somewhere between the darkness and the light. Maybe those are the words that best sum up the paradox of who we are and where we are … somewhere between the fact of darkness and the hope of the light.”

We are the beloved creation of a loving God, and God comes into the world to claim us. Into the darkness God sends his Son, the light of the world – from heaven above. God knows the darkness and moral chaos of our world. God knows the deceptive darkness of our own souls. But God has not and will not give up on what God loves.

“Comfort, O comfort, my people …” Isaiah’s words speak the hope of God’s light into the wilderness places of our lives. Th e season of Advent is about our need for God and the new beginning God always off ers us. Whatever is happening in our lives right now, the promise of Advent and of Christmas is this: In the places we are broken, in the darkness, in the silence of unanswered questions, the wondrous gift of the Light of the world comes to us. Emmanuel, God with us. Life can begin again for all of us.

We as God’s people are formed by the Light. God comes in God’s own time, but God always comes to us. And this Light – From Heaven Above – allows us to see not only what is, but what can be.– PASTOR bILL MACLEAN

The Augsburg Confession –It’s Important Why??

Produced 13 years after Luther’s posting of his 95 Theses, the Augsburg Confession contains the core statements of Lutheran beliefs. Ironically, it came about primarily at the urging of Charles V, the Holy Roman Emperor, who was greatly concerned over the number of princes who were shifting their loyalties to Martin Luther and other reformers. With Turkish invaders now at the gates of Vienna, he needed unity within his lands. And so, he requested that the princes assemble in the city of Augsburg to explain their religious beliefs.

With the princes came theologians, including Luther’s close friend and comrade, Philipp Melanchthon. Luther, who had been excommunicated from the Catholic Church and was now wanted as an outlaw, did not dare attend, but was asked to approve the final text of the statement of beliefs by mail.

The document, which came to be known as the Augsburg Confession, was signed by the princes who sided with the Reformation and read aloud to Charles V. It also was presented in writing in both German and Latin. It continues as the basic statement of Lutheran beliefs to this day.

Note: Learn more about the Augsburg Confession – and our core Lutheran beliefs – this winter when DR. MARk TRANVIk presents A Walk Through the Augsburg Confession beginning Jan 17. See details on page 7.

• Prayer that Prevails Th u 1/12 & 1/19 7-8:30pm Mpls Rm 482-86. For Martin Luther, faithful prayer is bold, daring, and audacious – the kind that clings to God’s promises, even when God seems to be silent. Th is class explores some of Luther’s most provocative teachings on prayer from his late and colorful commentaries in Genesis. Cost: $10. Register www.mtolivet.org.

• Beyond Disagreement: A Conversation Between Luther and feminists on Sin, Suffering, and the Cross Th u 2/2 & 2/9 7-8:30pm, Mpls Rm 482-86. Martin Luther once said that for Christians “the cross alone is our theology.” Over the past several decades, feminists and others have been critical of Christian preoccupation with the death of Jesus, arguing against the focus on sin and suff ering that accompanies a theology of the cross. Join Hamline Professor of Th eology DR. DEANNA THOMPSON for this two-part series where we will focus on Luther’s views of the cross, on feminist critiques, and on Th ompson’s proposal for a way forward. Cost: $10. Welcome kate! My name is Kate Belschner, and I have

joined the youth staff as the new junior high youth coordinator at the West Campus. I’m a lifelong member of Mount Olivet, a recent graduate of Gustavus Adolphus College, and I grew up and attended school in Edina.

As a young girl, the youth ministries at Mount Olivet played a vital role in shaping my faith. I was baptized at Mount Olivet as an infant, grew up participating in choir, Hi-League, House Groups, and Cathedral of the Pines. I attended many retreats from when I was very young through high school, including the Gustavus overnight, which I loved so much I went there for college. I can’t even imagine how diff erent my life would have been if I hadn’t been in the youth programs at Mount Olivet.

My passion for youth ministry initially started when I was involved in those programs as a kid. I looked to them as my escape from the hustle and bustle of schoolwork and overwhelming teen dramas. Th ey gave me mentors that held me to a new standard of serving others in the community, to devoting my time to worship and praise, and being a leader for others just as the youth staff had been for me. I benefi ted from the staff and volunteers who made possible the many opportunities for stewardship, fellowship, and worship.

Th e youth programs shaped me into who I am, and helped build the foundation of my relationship with God and my church. Being a part of a congregation that cares enough to not only reach out, but to also follow through in making those relationships last, meant everything.

In the summer of 2014, I had the privilege to be a summer intern with the Children & Family Ministry team. At that time, I stated that what makes the diff erence in any experience is the personal connections you either choose to make or not make. I still believe that today. I am looking forward to connecting with and helping our Mount Olivet youth in their faith journey as part of your Mount Olivet youth staff . – kATE bELSChNER

Christmas Reminders December is upon us and the youth at Mount Olivet have some great reminders on how to spend your time leading up to Christmas.

• Serve at Mount Olivet or in your community. Make this month about giving! No, not just the go out and buy a gift for your family kind of giving, but giving by serving others. Th ere are always ways and opportunities to get involved here at Mount Olivet, so make sure to ask!

• Connect with someone that you have lost touch with.Have you been thinking about reconnecting with an old friend or family member? Well, there is no time like the present to do so. Make an eff ort to reach out to someone in your life that you look forward to catching up with.

• Count your blessings. What are you grateful for? We often think about what we want this time of year instead of being thankful for what we have. Take time to show appreciation for all that you have in your life.

•Attend (or participate in) the Mount Olivet Christmas Concerts. Th e Christmas Concerts (photo below) have become a wonderful tradition at Mount Olivet. Th e concerts feature the Mount Olivet choirs and is an event you won’t want to miss! It will take place at the Mpls Campus on 12/11 at 3pm & 5pm.

• Explore your faith. It is easy to lose touch with the true meaning of Christmas. Make sure to spend time growing in your faith this Christmas season by spending time in prayer, coming to church, and discussing it with others.

• Spend quality time with family and friends. We all know that this time of year gets busy! Make sure to slow down now and again and spend quality time with the people that you love.

• Refl ect on 2016. As 2016 winds down it is important to refl ect on all that has happened this year. Take some time for yourself and let yourself think about both the good and the bad and how you can move forward onto 2017. DON’T MISS THE MOUNT

A Christmas Present for JesusDear Friends,

From the Festival of Nine Lessons and Carols held Christmas Eve at King’s College in Cambridge, we have this petition in the Bidding Prayer:

And because this would most rejoice his heart, let us remember before him the poor and the helpless, the cold and the hungry and the oppressed; the sick and them that mourn; the lonely and the unloved; the aged and the little children ...

I invite you to consider the best gift you can give to Jesus’ friends – the gift of warmth, shelter, food, clothing, and a new chance at life. You do this when you make your Christmas gift to Mount Olivet, which supports people in need through Simpson Housing, VEAP, Dignity Center, Love INC, and more.

You ease loneliness as you make your gift to support our pastors as they do their ministry of visiting those in hospitals, under hospice care, or are simply unable to leave their homes. Th rough the radio ministry you enable those who cannot come to church to listen to the wonderful music and hear the Word preached. We could fi ll this page with messages of gratitude that we receive.

You build the next generation by your support for Cathedral of the Pines, our choirs from Cathedral Choir on down, and our Hi-League and Hi-er-League programs. You stand with those getting married, those having children baptized, those leaving for college and careers. You stand with the grieving even as they give thanks for the life of the loved one who dies.

You help families caught in crises through aff ordable counseling services and pastoral care. And, yes, you do less glamorous things like pay salaries, heat, and electric bills so that the House of God is open always to those who fi nd joy, solace, and direction at both our campuses.

You do all this and more. At this end of the year, your extra gift will ensure that these ministry needs are met 100%. Please give a generous gift to Jesus and his children and friends. Why? For love’s sake and “Because it would rejoice his heart.”

We are in better shape than last year when we came to you with “Pleas with Please” and asked you to close our shortfall. Your response, along with careful monitoring of budgets, put us in a better position this year, yet we will still need $90,000 in Christmas off erings to fulfi ll our missions. What a great gift to those in need and to the church and our new senior pastor that we begin this new era with strength.
