Words from the Executive DirectorAll of our exhibitions and educational programming this summer at the Tampa Museum of Art have connected bright, talented, and dedicated scholars and artists to members of the community. And it all began with a dynamic set of three summer exhibitions.

Let me share with you my excitement about our contemporary exhibition program schedule that brought Norma Kamali and Peter Max to the Tampa Museum of Art. These exhibitions give our community a closer look at the variety of artistic directions in the second half of the 20th century and opening decades of the 21st century. The Pop Art of Peter Max and the work and play fashion of Norma Kamali express a uniquely American spirit in art. Max and Kamali may be two of the best known artists of their generations, appealing to millions of people that span the 1960s through the 2010s.

In contrast, our third exhibition, From Dada and Op from Color Field and Pop, reviews modern art movements in our country during the same time period. This print exhibition profiles the elevation of Post-Modern Art from an evolutionary lineage established in pre-1950s Europe. Exhibited works by Duchamp, Matisse, and Albers would later inform the work of Frankenthaler, Kelly, Chamberlain, and Lichtenstein. All three exhibitions together best illustrate the “Pluralism” of post-WWII directions

in art and allow us to review the advent of democracy and personal expression in art that continues to resonate with the American public today.

To further enhance the museum experience, our sold out summer camps thematically correlated with exhibition topics at hand, and educate the youngest of our learners from 5 to 18 years of age. The studio art classes Color to the Max were all about expressive use of color; Material Expressions related to abstraction and the rise of collage and assemblage; and the upcoming teen workshops are dedicated to Public Art and Kamali inspired studio fashion design.

Our newly formed Teen Council now has a waiting list of eager young adults to become more intimately involved. And as we continue to provide professional development opportunities to students of USF Honors College to facilitate adult discussions in the gallery exhibitions, we are embarking on a new relationship with the Morsani School of Medicine. The Museum is becoming the center of the visual arts in the Tampa Bay region and we are thrilled to be more actively engaged. Watch for more of our exciting workshops for Adults and Families linked to our exhibitions throughout the summer, drop by for free family activities on Saturday mornings, and thank you again for your support of the Tampa Museum of Art!

Michael Tomor, Executive Director

The Classical World Ongoing For more than 30 years, the Tampa Museum of Art has collected artwork from across classical antiquity, which this exhibition explores from its prehistoric beginnings to its late Roman decline (i.e., from the third millennium BC into the fourth and fifth centuries AD). With important loans from local private collectors augmenting the permanent collection, The Classical World includes nearly 300 artworks produced in ancient Greece and Italy as well as North Africa and the Near East.
