We are calling on United Methodists in the United States to email their senators to pass the2019 Background Check Expansion Act.

Mitch McConnell has a lot of power asmajority leader to decide what bills will be considered by the Senate. And thus far, he has shownno interest in having this bipartisan, commonsense bill brought before the Senate.

The ease of access to these weapons - coupled with the emboldened white nationalistmovement, toxic masculinity and much more - contributes to this ongoing epidemic ofmassacres.

Longest Ice Cream Sundae at Westwood - This Saturday

On Saturday, August 10, Westwood United Methodist Church is going to build Cincinnati'sLongest Ice Cream Sundae, with over 700 feet of ice cream, whipped cream, chocolate syrup, cherries and sprinkles! We are wanting to create community as a way to build relationships withour neighbors, as well as celebrating the wrap of summer for families who were a part of oursummer day camps!

Jack Crego, a fifth grade student at St. Catharine's, developed this project for the See All thePeople mini grant at Westwood United Methodist Church, where he attends. The grant was achallenge for every ministry group at Westwood United Methodist Church to tell us how yourministry is planning to be engaged in the community in an outwardly-focused way. Theseprojects could be relationally focused or service oriented, with the goal to connect people into thelife of our church. After presenting his idea to the church in writing as well as in a videopresentation, he won the third place spot and was awarded a $1000 grant for his deliciousdream!

The Ice Cream Sundae will be along Epworth Ave wrapping around the church stretching a 1.5Blocks! It will be held during Westwood Works' Second Saturday Splash, a neighborhood blockparty, so pray for a beautiful day and that new friendships will be formed. Everyone is welcome toattend, and we will begin building the Sundae at 5:45.

Festival of Faiths -Sunday September 8

On Sunday, September 8, 2019, the secondannual Cincinnati Festival of Faiths celebratesinterfaith understanding and collaboration for allages. Organized by the Bridges of FaithTrialogue, the festival will feature more than 90faith-based exhibits, music, interfaith dialoguesand workshops, spiritual meditations, art andmore. The festival will be held at the CintasCenter at Xavier University and is free and opento the public.

In addition to being present at the event, one witness of ORV United Methodists is ourcontribution of small gifts to give away at the event. You can help us bycontributing BOOKMARKS (approximately 2''x6'') that represent Compassion ThroughAction. Like mini-prayer shawls, pray for the person who will receive it as you make it and thehosts of our table at the Festival of Faith will give it away with a prayer of love and support. Theymay be knitted, crocheted, stitched, or other fabric art. They may be crafty paper bookmarks orsimple construction paper and markers. Use your imagination. Embody the theme ofCompassion Through Action. (If you want to use a scripture, please use a full quotation ratherthan a reference to book, chapter, and verse. And make them "gift quality".

Make as many bookmarks as you can. Enlist the help of your youth group, women's group, small group, Church Council, or congregation. All bookmarks will need to be delivered tothe ORV District Office by September 1.

If you have questions, please contact David Meredith. Pictured are some examplesof bookmarks.
