The high-priced colt (an Uncle Mo filly brought $1-million), was regarded as the best colt in the sale off his strong :10-flat breeze the week before. The colt drew bids from many top agents, but was ultimately purchased by Jim Crupi for an undisclosed client who sent him to trainer Doug O’Neill’s barn in California. The sale was also good for Country Life Freshman sire Cal Nation, whose first crop of 2 year olds will race this summer. Cal Nation had a filly sell for $40,000 after she breezed in :10.1 (right). Friesan Fire made headlines three days after the Preakness when his 2-year-old colt out of the mare Crafty Toast sold for $825,000 at the Fasig-Tipton May 2-year-olds in Training Sale in Timonium. The colt drew bids from many top agents, but was ultimately purchased by Jim Crupi for an undisclosed client who sent him to trainer Doug O’Neill’s barn in California.

The 2-year-olds in Training Sale at Timonium provided the spark for two new partnerships—the Carry Back LLC’s! Modeled after the popular “Raise You LLC’s” (10-share breeding partnerships), the 10-share Carry Back LLC’s were formed to purchase well-bred fillies already in training, offered at the Fasig-Tipton sale in Timonium on May 23-24. Named after Carry Back (winner of the 1961 Kentucky Derby and Preakness Stakes who was conceived at Country Life Farm by our stallion Saggy), these rac-ing partnerships feature two unnamed Kentucky-bred fillies.

The Carry Back No. 1 LLC purchased a filly for $37,000, sired by Include, out of the Dixieland Band mare Small Axe, from the immediate family of sires Broken Vow and Peaks and Valleys. The Carry Back No. 2 LLC filly , a $67,000 purchase, is by top young sire Into Mischief (half-brother to $4-million-earning Champion racemare Beholder) out of the winning Bluegrass Cat mare Bluegrassislegal. The flashy filly also has an impressive pedigree with sires Trappe Shot and Power Broker under the third dam. The partners will submit and vote on names for the fillies. Both fillies will be trained by Mike Trombetta.

Foals grow up quickly, and last year’s crop of babies have turned into yearlings. We have 20 yearlings at Merryland that were foaled at Country Life last year, and most of them will be exhibited at the annual Maryland Horse Breeders Association Yearling Show at the Timonium Fairgrounds on Sunday, June 26th. Admission is free, so come out to the show ring located by the Cow Palace and watch all the yearlings strut their stuff in front of a crowd. This year’s judge is John Servis, who trained Smarty Jones to win the Kentucky Derby and Preakness in 2004, and this year sent out Maryland-bred (and Yearling Show graduate) Cathryn Sophia to win the Grade 1 Kentucky Oaks. The show starts at 10:00 a.m. and will last all day with food available on the grounds. Hope to see you there!
