INTRODUCTION

This week’s image is a section of a stained-glass window from St Giles Cathedral, Edinburgh, created in 1922, by Douglas Strachan. He was one of the greatest stained glass artists of the Arts and Crafts period. It depicts Christ walking on the water to the disciples in the midst of the storm.

It is a message for our time. The present pandemic is like a huge storm everything has been blown topsy-turvy. We are afraid and worried about our futures and those of our loved ones. Although we might feel forsaken, we are not. This Bible text is one of many that reminds us that we can trust God in the storms of our lives. Jesus watches us in our storms.

In today’s gospel account Matthew tells us that Jesus ‘went up on a mountainside by himself to pray,’ but Mark adds a little more detail… ‘He saw the disciples straining at the oars, because the wind was against them.’

Jesus was watching his disciples not passively, but with great interest. I am sure he was praying for them as well. The disciples may have lost sight of Jesus, but he never lost sight of them. If you feel you are all alone in this storm and that Jesus can’t see you, remember this: You don’t escape his attention. Indeed, Jesus comes to us in our storms.

Yours in Christ The Revd Nicholas Cooper, Vicar of Frindsbury, Upnor & Chattenden

Greeting&OpeningPrayer

In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Amen.

O Lord, open our lips: and our mouth shall proclaim your praise.

Glory to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit; as it was in the beginning is now and shall be for ever. Amen

Hymn All creatures of our God and King lift up your voice and with us sing, Alleluia, alleluia. Thou burning sun with golden beam, thou silver moon with softer gleam,

O praise him, O praise him, alleluia, alleluia, alleluia.

Thou rushing wind that art so strong, ye clouds that sail in heaven along, O praise him, alleluia. Thou rising morn, in praise rejoice, ye lights of evening, find a voice;

Chorus

William Henry Draper (1855-1933) based on Laudato sii, O me signore St Francis of Assisi's Canticle of the Sun

Confession&Absolution

Almighty God, our heavenly Father, we have sinned against you, through our own fault, in thought, and word, and deed, and in what we have left undone. We are heartily sorry, and repent of all our sins. For your Son our Lord Jesus Christ’s sake, forgive us all that is past; and grant that we may serve you in newness of life to the glory of your name. Amen. Almighty God, who forgives all who truly repent, have mercy upon you, pardon and deliver you from all your sins, confirm and strengthen you in all goodness, and keep you in life eternal; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

TheApostles’Creed Let us declare our faith in God, Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. I believe in God, the Father almighty, creator of heaven and earth. I believe in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried; he descended to the dead. On the third day he rose again; he ascended into heaven, he is seated at the right hand of the Father, and he will come to judge the living and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen.

Prayers Our intercessions are led by Judy. Our prayers conclude with the Lord’s Prayer.

As our Saviour taught us, so we pray:

Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name, your kingdom come, your will be done, on earth as in heaven. Give us today our daily bread. Forgive us our sins as we forgive those who sin against us. Lead us not into temptation but deliver us from evil. For the kingdom, the power, and the glory are yours now and for ever. Amen.

ThePeace

Christ came and proclaimed the gospel, peace to those who are far off and peace to those who are near. The peace of the Lord be always with you. and also with you.

Hymn

Dear Lord and Father of mankind, forgive our foolish ways; re-clothe us in our rightful mind, in purer lives thy service find, in deeper reverence praise.

In simple trust like theirs who heard, beside the Syrian sea, the gracious calling of the Lord, let us, like them, without a word rise up and follow thee.

O Sabbath rest by Galilee! O calm of hills above, where Jesus knelt to share with thee the silence of eternity, interpreted by love!

Drop thy still dews of quietness, till all our strivings cease; take from our souls the strain and stress, and let our ordered lives confess the beauty of thy peace.

Breathe through the heats of our desire thy coolness and thy balm; let sense be dumb, let flesh retire; speak through the earthquake, wind, and fire, O still small voice of calm!

John Greenleaf Whittier (1807-1892)

Tune: Repton

TheBlessing

May God meet your deepest needs, according to his glorious riches in Christ Jesus and the blessing … Amen. Go in peace, to love and serve the Lord. In the name of Christ. Amen.
