FRIENDS

Hi. I’m Ryan Daniels I had bilateral retinal blastoma, in short cancer of both retinas. When I was almost 7 months old it was found so I had radiation to both eyes for 1 month. Then 3 months later the largest spot looked sort of suspicious, a different treatment was in the works, but it didn’t happen, the spot had burst. A second round of radiation was done. After that I had to have my spots that mushroomed up froze every month for 9 months. I had developed a cataract along the way, it was too large for Dr. Archer to see through and the cancer cells kept on developing. The Doctors and my parents decided to remove my right eye to save the rest of me.

Now here I am driving and just graduated high school, and onto college to pursue a career in Web Design and Game Design. I have already taken computer graphics during my senior year. Life is good for me a little different for me then it is for others, but doable. I’d like to say Thank You to all that took part in my treatment, especially Grandma Tina (Ernestina Parravano). Grandma Tina helped us in every way; she was always there waiting with open arms for a great big hug and with her bright smile, warm and giving heart and a small gift or story about others like me or her granddaughter that was my age. Grandma Tina also arranged and paid for our stay both times at Ronald McDonald House. She also helped with food now and then. I’m glad God sent you to me. I hope I can share with others the kindness and love you shared with me.

I wish the world could be full of Grandma Tina’s!

God Bless and Love You,

Ryan and Family

Ernestina’s Update Social Services FRIENDS

Below is a letter written in June 2008, about Ernestina’s Patient Assistant Fund and how she touched the Daniel’s family.

Dear FRIENDS Members,

It is with a saddened heart that I share the news of Doretha Vander Kaay’s passing on October 12, 2008. Doretha’s 45 years of dedicated service to the FRIENDS Gift Shops has been overwhelmingly generous. Her outlook on life was filled with spunk and style. Doretha always shared her sense of humor and joy of life with everyone she came in contact with. Her cheerful smile and warm personality will always be remembered and missed. Doretha exemplifies the true meaning of FRIENDS. A celebration of life is being planned by her family in Spring of 2009.

Sandy Del Favero FRIENDS Gift Shops Manager

Dear FRIENDS:

I am so glad to be back on the FRIENDS board because 2009 is a very important year for us. This coming spring, the FRIENDS will be celebrating the 50th Anniversary of the Gift Shop. Back in the spring of 1959, some very dedicated volunteers (known then as The Guild) opened the first “Gift Shop” which consisted of a small counter space in the lobby of the old Main Hospital. They sold candy, cards, and gifts and slowly grew the business over the years. The profits then, as now, were earmarked for patient needs, setting the course of the FRIENDS philanthropic giving mission for the future.

Twenty years later, in 1978, the FRIENDS (having officially changed their name) opened the first free-standing gift shop in the Main Hospital. The shop had grown and the FRIENDS had opened Mott Children’s Gift Shop as well. By 1988, when I first joined the FRIENDS board, they marked the $1 million giving milestone. In the coming year, 2009, FRIENDS’ 50th anniversary, we hope to pass the $3 million mark in our giving.

This milestone is no small feat, made possible by thousands of volunteer hours given willingly by our dedicated gift shop volunteers. I honor Sue Gikas for her thirty years as a gift shop volunteer and say thank you on behalf of all the recipients of the FRIENDS’ gifts.

As president, I want to spread the good news about the FRIENDS to the hospital community and the customers of our three gift shops. They should know that they are an important part of the FRIENDS giving equation.

The Board is making plans to mark and celebrate this big occasion and we are looking forward to having everyone join us in spreading the good news about the FRIENDS mission of giving. I thank you for your membership in the FRIENDS organization that helps to increase our annual giving. Our FRIENDS membership continues to increase and our plans for the future include the opening of two new gift shops in the East Ann Arbor Health and Geriatrics Center and the new C.S. Mott Children’s Hospital. Thank you for giving me the opportunity to be involved in this wonderful organization at such an exciting time.

Sincerely,

Nancy Bates FRIENDS President

Volunteer Recognition a BIG Deal

from Nancy Bates

I have known Sue Gikas for about 22 years and she has

always been one of the most involved and giving of all the

volunteers. She has given an average of 15 hours a week (at

least) acting as a buyer, board president, gift shop committee

chairman, cashier and super volunteer for all of those years.

She knows more about the gift shop and its history than

ANYONE and shares her time and talents willingly.

Never stressed or annoyed with the many questions that

come her way. WHENEVER she is in the shop, she goes

about her volunteer work as if it were a natural part of

everyone’s life. “No big deal”, I can hear her answer to

any problem while others are fretting over. She exudes

calm and natural compassion for others and is a perfect

role model for everyone. The FRIENDS have been so

very lucky to have had Sue’s THIRTY years of dedication,

time and focused talents. The FRIENDS Gift Shops are a

success today thanks in a very large part to Sue Gikas.

FRIENDS EventsDespite the first snow flurry of the season, two hundred guests, faculty and staff stood poised on the roof of the Taubman parking structure ready to make their mark on history. A Beam Signing Event held on October 29, 2008 marked a milestone in the construction of the new U-M C.S. Mott Children’s Hospital and Women’s Hospital. Over a two day period hundreds of individuals signed their names on two steel beams that will become part of the structure in early December and signify the end of the steel construction phase of the building project. The new hospital is scheduled to open in Fall 2008. Thank you FRIENDS!
