INNOVATION AT WORKIn partnership with the Penn Museum, an innovative pilot study at Penn Vet’s Working Dog Center is training dogs to detect ancient treasures in an attempt to tackle cultural heritage trafficking. Moxie, pictured on the cover, is learning to identify smuggled priceless objects from Syria and Iraq that have been hidden in crates and packages. Moxie is an integra part of Penn’s Antiquities Detection Research Study.

BARBARA E. SMITH V’78Sharing a Gift to Help Animals in Need

Barbara E. Smith, V’78, has been a loyal donor since she graduated from Penn Vet. Over the years she’s given back to various programs including the Pet Memorial Program, Annual Giving and The Good Samaritan Fund. In 2018 her practice, Ark Animal Hospital, won the First Trust Bank’s 6th Annual Business First Award. Inspired by Blue the Hero Dog, a Good Samaritan Fund recipient featured in our 2017 calendar, Barbara designated her award winnings to our Good Samaritan Fund, which provides financial assistance to eligible patients and their families.

SERVING OUR COMMUNITYSchrodinger was dropped off at Penn Vet’s Emergency Service by a Good Samaritan on Martin Luther King, Jr. Day 2018. He was only three months old and had a severely damaged left eye. The Emergency Team examined him and removed his eye, but found he was otherwise healthy. Schrodinger found his forever home that day with a Penn Vet employee.

Each year, in observance of Martin Luther King, Jr. Day of Service, Penn Vet’s Ryan Hospital holds a free wellness and vaccination clinic for the local community. In addition to vaccinations, low-cost, permanent identification microchips for pets are offered. In 2018 we saw over 320 pets!

Ryan Hospital is one of the nation’s top veterinary trauma centers and a certified level- one facility, indicating the highest level of patient care.

A FILLY “CHERISH” AND A COLT “CACHE”: THE MIRACULOUS BIRTH OF TWIN HOLSTEINERSTreasure and her duo are a rare case. In horses, carrying twins is unusual, and birthing healthy twin foals is especially unlikely. When Treasure showed signs of early labor, her owner Adel Dukes Melson quickly brought her to meet Dr. Michelle Linton, Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) specialist, and part of New Bolton Center’s High Risk and Healthy Mare Foaling programs. And when the twins were born, Dr. Linton made protecting their delicate bones a priority.

The foals had to be kept quiet and off their feet to encourage proper bone growth. Playful and active, it wasn’t easy to keep the feisty twins calm while their bodies developed. The three horses were under the careful, round-the-clock watch of the NICU team and Foal Sitters, volunteers who assist clinicians and staff in caring for mares and foals during the foaling season. Adel Dukes Melson’s shock at having twins has now given way to pure joy and gratitude that Treasure delivered two tiny yet thriving foals. “Treasure and the twins received excellent care from a wonderful team. At every stage, the veterinarians, students, and staff were very hands-on. Everyone cared so much about mom and her foals,” Melson commented. “New Bolton is very special place.”

SHE WON OUR HEARTSWoobie was found curled up in a parking lot near the Fern Rock Train Station suffering from multiple stab wounds and other injuries. It was a very cold day in early March and in another time or place this could have meant that she didn’t have a chance to survive. The Animal Care and Control Team of Philadelphia picked up Woobie and arranged for an immediate transfer to the Pennsylvania SPCA, an expert and leader in the community for animal cruelty investigation and care. The PSPCA veterinarians found Woobie in dire states – she had multiple stab wounds on her rib cage, trauma to her lungs and possible internal bleeding. She needed immediate specialty care. The PSPCA immediately contacted the Penn Vet Shelter Medicine team to enroll Woobie in Penn Vet Shelter Medicine’s Richard Lichter Charity for Dogs Program… (continue reading Woobie’s story at the back of the calendar)

SENIOR SENATOR’S TRIUMPHANT RETURNIt’s the innovation of the surgical team at New Bolton Center that saved Senior Senator and returned him to win a 2nd Maryland Hunt Cup after a catastrophic fall. While defending his 2016 Maryland Hunt Cup title at the 2017 race, Senior Senator tumbled at the third fence in a serious accident and nearly ended his racing career with a diagnosis of a broken neck. The thoroughbred traveled to New Bolton Center, where Dr. Dean Richardson used the School’s robotic imaging system to acquire precise images of the fracture. Then, with meticulous care, the surgery team cleared a path to the spine, using retractors to move important and vulnerable internal parts of the body like the trachea, carotid artery, jugular vein, and esophagus out of the way to repair the fourth cervical vertebra. Penn Vet is the first veterinary teaching hospital in the world to use the revolutionary equipment that enables clinicians to scan an awake, moving and weight-bearing horse. “This surgery saved Senior Senator’s life,” said his owner, Vicki Crawford, of the May 2017 procedure. Dr. Richardson credits the full surgical team for its success, including New Bolton Center’s anesthesiology nurses, Dr. Kyla Ortved, Assistant Professor of Large Animal Surgery, and Dr. Thomas Schaer, Director of the Comparative Orthopedic Research Laboratory.

EXPERTISE FOR YOUR FARM ANIMALSJust a mile west of New Bolton Center, on the Walton-Myers Farm, these Belted Galloway beef cattle are Field Service clients. New Bolton Center’s William Boucher Field Service veterinarians travel across the region, providing personalized care to over 38,000 farm animals. Owner Mark Myers, PhD, is the current President of the Pennsylvania Society for Promoting Agriculture. The Philadelphia Society for Promoting Agriculture is the oldest agricultural society in the United States. Organized in 1785, the Society’s mission is to discover and disseminate the best methods of scientific farming practice. Dr. Benjamin Rush was a charter member of the PSPA and, as a professor at the University of Pennsylvania Medical School, was one of the first to suggest the need for a school of veterinary medicine.

FIVE YEARS CANCER FREE AND COUNTINGOne such dog is Dexter, a social Old English Sheep Dog, diagnosed with osteosarcoma over 5 and a half years ago. After receiving limb amputation and a round of chemotherapy, standard treatment for aggressive osteosarcoma, he was enrolled in a clinical trial using an exciting new therapy. Dr. Nicola Mason is using a novel vaccine to help dogs’ immune systems fight back. Canine bone cancer is almost identical to pediatric cancer, and the insights we gain from Dexter’s successful treatment can potentially apply to children in the future.

HAPPY TO BE HOME Christopher Le Vine has a menagerie of animals at the Inn at Grace Winery. Their goat, Carlo, spent a week at New Bolton Center recovering from meninga worm, and is now back at home. New Bolton Center’s Field Service comes out to see all of the animals on the farm, including their horse, Bishop, two donkeys, Momma and Rosalita, and five additional goats. Chris has strong feelings for New Bolton Center: “As for why we have chosen New Bolton Center to care for our animals, our answer is very simple but extremely important. Everyone we have dealt with, both over the phone and in person, have been extremely friendly and knowledgeable. The entire veterinarian staff is amazing and helpful in many ways. They truly care about the animals and it shows.”

RICK SLOWICKIA Committed Volunteer

Rick Slowicki (pictured with Odysseus) first visited the Penn Vet Working Dog Center in 2016, and hasn’t left since. He became a volunteer at the WDC the day after his tour, where he saw one of the dogs do a live search on the rubble pile and couldn’t wait to get involved. In his words: “I became committed because of the people and purpose of the Center. The most rewarding part is when the dogs go on to their new career. All of the effort that goes into each dog’s first year at the Center shows when I hear or see the success stories of the graduates.” In addition to serving as one of the WDC’s most dedicated volunteers, Rick has also sponsored two of the puppies at the Center through his company, Nonstop Couriers.

ASPCA’s Adopt a Shelter Dog Month

SAVING A CHAMPION SPRINTERIn his 24 lifetime starts, champion turf sprinter Green Mask captured eight wins and career earnings of $1,064,761. The now 7-year-old was retired from racing in September of 2017 after suffering a career ending fractured sesamoid in his left foreleg during a workout at Belmont Park. To save his life, New Bolton Center’s Dr. Dean Richardson repaired the damage through several surgical procedures. To encourage the thoroughbred’s fractured bones to heal together, a locking plate was placed down the front of the joint, and a tension band cable—1.7 millimeters in diameter—was placed behind the fetlock, along with other screws across the joint in the sesamoids. Because it’s not uncommon for infection to develop as bacteria forms on the metal plate, it is typically removed after the bones fuse. THE PENN VET GOOD SAMARITAN FUND: CREATED BY GENEROUS PET LOVERSDogs will eat anything. Even corncobs. When Booster, a 7 year old male mastiff, came to the Ryan Hospital Emergency Service, he’d been vomiting for hours. And when abdominal and thoracic radiographs showed a foreign body and a potential obstruction, surgery was needed. Booster would end up in the ICU overnight, and because he went into shock, would have to stay there for a few days to recover. It’s our partnership with passionate pet people that help make these life-saving treatments possible through this special fund.

WOOBIE: SHE WON OUR HEARTS CONT’D.

When Woobie arrived at Penn Vet, the doctors were surprised by the extent of her injuries. She had multiple stab wounds to the chest, just inches from her heart, and multiple punctures to her lungs were found along with significant bleeding in and around the chest. Efforts by the emergency team, ICU, the surgical team, the anesthesia team, the nursing staff, and the entire Penn Vet hospital, brought her through an incredibly difficult surgery. Despite her horrible experience and even through her convalescence, Woobie loved being with people and looked for a comforting lap. She won over the hearts of everyone who met her and cared for her. This tremendous community initiative is supported by a donation from the Richard Lichter Charity for Dogs. It enables students and clinicians at Penn Vet to treat animals from the Philadelphia area that might have been previously euthanized. The shelter medicine team selects dogs for the program in collaboration with community shelter partners. After being discharged from the hospital, the animals often live with a foster family and then are made available for adoption.

We checked in on Woobie seven months after her harrowing ordeal, and were thrilled to find a smiling, playful dog who is a picture of health and happiness. Woobie LOVES toys, food, children and other dogs, and most of all, cuddles with her humans. She is a bundle of energy and has regular play dates with a 90 pound white Pitbull, aptly named Thunder. “We are just blessed to have her,” Woobie’s owner Vicki, told us. “She is awesome!”

“Woobie’s case is a wonderful example of the entire Philadelphia animal welfare community, including ACCT Philly, the PSPCA, and Penn Vet, working together to get an animal the help it needs. We are all happy Woobie was able to benefit from the Penn Vet Shelter Medicine Richard Lichter Charity for Dogs Program,” said Dr. Brittany Watson, Director of Shelter Medicine and Community Engagement at Penn Vet.

REMEMBERING BRETTBrett Matthew Cooper’s lifelong dream was to become a veterinarian; tragically, he was not able to complete his goal. Brett passed away on September 13, 2017, just a few months short of his 2018 graduation from Penn Vet. In his memory, his family and friends have helped others finish what Brett started with the creation of an endowed scholarship in his name. The scholarship will be awarded annually to a student who is pursuing a career in the care and service of animals, with a special emphasis on those who can demonstrate that they have overcome adversity in pursuit of their education. Diagnosed with Tourette Syndrome at a young age, Brett never allowed his disabilities to interfere with his dreams or limit his perception of his own capabilities. Over 600 donors listed here have supported his legacy, which speaks to the warmth that Brett brought to every life he touched.
