FAREWELL TO SARAHSara Doehring resigned from her position as Supervisor here at the Montecito Libray, as she has accepted the position of Librarian at the

Lompoc branch. As many of you may not know, the position of Branch Supervisor is not a Librarian postion, but is instead a Senior Library Technician position. Sara has her Masters in Library and Information Science, and the Librarian job in Lompoc is more reflective of the work she wants to pursue. She says that “these past 15 months have been a tremendous learning experience for me....Montecito is a very special community, and I’m very thankful that I had the opportunity to work here and get to know many wonderful people.” We will all miss Sara but wish her well at her new job in Lompoc. Stop in and say ‘Hi” if you’re up that way.

IN THE MEANTIME...Our own Eden Kennedy has been temporarily promoted to Library Technician and is sharing the responsibility of heading up the desk with Tara O’Reilly, Senior Library Technician from Carpinteria. Tara is kindly spliting her time and serving as Branch manager for both Montecito and Carpinteria until a more permanent situation can be established. Eden Kennedy

HAVE YOU SEEN THE NEW MACHINE?The new Self-Checkout machine is up and running thanks to the Marie Morrisroe Technology Fund. Don’t worry, there are still two staff members at the library during all open hours. But if you’re in a hurry, you can use the machine to search for titles, pay overdue fees, or simply checkout! If you’d like a quick tutorial on how to use the new contraption, ask at the desk. It’s fun and much closer than Las Vegas; you’ll feel like a winner. Also new to the library are the portable shelving units which replaced the old spinners. Four computer tables behind the checkout machine replaced the assemblage of table and desks creating a much more functional workspace. And on the way are seven new computers.Thank you Mrs. Morrisroe!

IF YOU’RE AN AMAZON SHOPPERUse Amazon smile and 0.5% of your purchase will be donated back to the Friends. Bookmark the link http://smile.amazon.com/ch/95-3614638 and support us every time you shop. Pass this on to all of your friends and family and help raise money for the library on what you already spend.

WE APPRECIATE YOUR BOOK DONATIONSAnd we appreciate Ned Quackenbush!

You may have seen Ned hauling bags and boxes full of books from the library office to his car in the parking lot. There’s a reason for that.Ned is a true Friend of the Montecito Library. In 1991, he became interested in collecting books and took a course on identification and evaluation of collectible books and first editions at University of Washington in Seattle. Subsequently, he attended a seminar put on by Antiquarian Bookmen’s Association in Colorado Springs at which book dealers from across the country addressed their various fields of expertise on identification of books of value. Many of the books you donate are put into circulation within the library system. Ned is the master of those that are not. For the past two decades, at least, he has been sorting and selling all the books donated to the library but not put into circulation. Higher value books are sold online and books of lesser value are

sold in bulk locally. Proceeds from those sales go directly to the Friends of the Montecito Library and are used to support the operating budget, including the purchase of new books. Thanks, Ned, for your continued service on the Board and for schlepping all those books around. And ‘Thanks’ to all of you who donate your books to the library.
