What a great 2015! Many, many exciting activi-

ties kept the library buzzing all year long. Read on to

see what your library has to offer...besides just

books, magazines, eBooks, music, movies, comput-

ers, and faxing/photocopying/printing services.

HIGHLIGHTS

Bilingual Storytime/Playschool Experience:

George Halverson, Chair of the First 5 California

Children and Families Commission said: “The most

recent science tells us that exercising the brains of

babies in the first years of life has an extremely pow-

erful impact on their development. We know that

the more early engagement and stimulation a child

receives, the stronger their cognitive skills, emotion-

al well-being, and physical and mental health will

be.” Thanks to a First 5 Yolo grant and Yolo County

Children’s Alliance, each Tuesday at 3:30pm the li-

brary hosts a dynamic program of English and

Spanish stories, songs, and movement designed to

promote early literacy for children 2-6 and their

caregivers. Talk. Read. Sing. It changes everything.

Día de los Niños is a celebration every day of chil-

dren, families, and reading that culminates yearly

on April 30th. The celebration emphasizes the im-

portance of literacy for children of all linguistic and

cultural backgrounds. In 2015, Clarksburg Commu-

nity Library celebrated on April 29th with 66 chil-

dren and their families: There were Mexican folk

dancers, face painting, crafts, book giveaways, and a

piñata raffle. Join us on Wednesday, April 27th, 2016

for another celebration.

Summer Reading Program: Studies show that

summer reading programs counteract the summer

slide, or loss of academic skills:

Free, voluntary reading is essential to helping

students become better readers, writers, and

spellers. Summer reading programs help

increase young people’s interest in reading.

Summer reading programs encourage parents to

read with their children and highlight the joys of

reading aloud. Reading aloud to children at an

early age is the most effective way to help them

learn language and to communicate with the

written word.

A whopping 142 Clarksburg community members

participated in Yolo County Library’s 2015 Summer

Reading Program (SRP): Read to the Rhythm.

Reading, attending programs (bugs, bats, musicians

were some of the stars), winning prizes, and partici-

pating in the end of the summer Pizza Party and

Raffle. Don Griffay was the grand prize winner of a

Kindle Fire HD! Join us June 1st–August 15th 2016,

when the SRP theme will be Sports and Games!

Lunch @ the Library: Between June 8th–August

16th, over 320 nutritious meals were served to

Clarksburg children and teens through this program

designed by the California Summer Meals Coalition

and the California Library Association. YMCA of Su-

perior California sponsored this program and the

Elk Grove School District supplied lunch on Tues-

days and Thursdays to coincide with library pro-

gramming. Because of its great success, we can look

forward to Lunch @ the Library again next summer!

Lucky Day Collection: Want to read the newest

Lee Child or Nora Roberts, but don’t want to wait

months for a copy to be available at the library?

titles can be found at Clarksburg Community

Library...if you’re lucky! Popular, new books can be

ACTIVITY ROOM

Our activity room was

completely remodeled in

2014 and it looks fantastic!

It’s the perfect setting for

your next meeting or social

gathering, with reasonable

rental rates. Please contact

librarian Margaret Pelrine

for availability and details.

2015 WINE TASTING AND ART AUCTION

You may have noticed that the library exterior was repainted a nice blue-green

color this past summer. Our thanks to Dennis Updegraff for undertaking this

important project!

Be sure to check out the new concrete patio and disabled parking spot in the

back of the library, by the activity room. Madriago-Lewis Construction did an

amazing job and the back area has never looked better!

The library’s 27th annual benefit on

September 20th was a great success

this year, as we welcomed over 330

guests at the beautiful Heringer

Ranch. We had 16 local wineries, 22

artists providing paintings and 3-D

art for the fine art auction, gourmet

food from Fresh & Quick catering,

and delectable desserts baked by

Clarksburg resident Vicki Pruner.

Thanks to the planning committee:

Amanda Beck, Karen Coffee, Christy

Frame, Rachel Frame, Don Griffay,

Nancy Griffay, Del Parr, Carolyn

Steffens, and Saralyn Taormina, as

well as the many volunteers who

helped!

A very special thanks to the Heringer

family for sharing their amazing

grounds with us again.

And our gratitude to all of the under-

writers, artists, and wineries; we

couldn’t have done it without your

generous support!

Look for more details about the 2016

benefit in the coming months—we

hope to see you there!
