Friends and Colleagues,

Welcome to the Fourth Annual Roseman University of Health Sciences Research Symposium. We are pleased and grateful to continue the momentum that has been building since our first Symposium three years ago. This year, we received 118 abstracts to date across both campuses in South Jordan and Henderson as well as from a growing contingent from our colleagues outside of Roseman. We look forward to featuring the discoveries and scholarly work of our faculty members, staff, post-doctoral researchers, residents, and students from all of Roseman’s health disciplines. Many of the presenting authors both inside and outside of Roseman carry affiliations with other great universities and entities worldwide like Virginia Commonwealth University, University of Michigan, University of Southern California, NYU, UNC Chapel Hill, Touro University Nevada, University of Chicago, University of Dresden, Germany, Mekelle University in Ethiopia and pharmaceutical manufacturer Merck & Co. Our presenters are immensely talented and in demand, working across borders to create solutions, collaborating with other great minds, and bridging our communities.

This year’s abstracts cover a wide range of topics in various areas including bench-top science, clinical research, and educational research. These works independently and collectively represent prodigious planning, methodical execution, and deeply insightful findings. These works, with a wide breadth and depth of scientific subject matter, are steps towards solutions, solutions that advance not only our work and our national and international reputation, but advance the human race. Some interesting presentations to note include research on healthcare policy and which social determinants of health are most likely to acted upon in US policymaking, a retrospective cross-sectional study on an antiretroviral therapy among HIV patients in Northern Ethiopia, and research on how Roseman faculty use and understand the Six-Point Mastery Learning Model, Roseman’s innovative learning model which has challenged the way healthcare education is taught. As you can see, the work being conducted is truly transformational and holds great possibility in evolving our understanding of critically important issues.

We believe that this thinking, input and collaboration not only showcases current thinking, but sparks new ideas, new modes of thinking, and imagination. We are proud of the minds and hearts of those in this room today.

Thank you to all those responsible for making this important event happen, as well as to all those attending the symposium and supporting the work of colleagues, students and friends. We believe this symposium will continue to grow and serve as a platform for the best thinking and research and a home for sparking imagination, solutions, discovery and learning.

Sincerely,

Renee Coffman, President

Keynote Speaker: Dr. Randall T. Peterson D3 Classroom 3:00 – 4:00 PM Sex, Drugs, and Disco: Tales of Zebrafish Chemical Biology Dr. Randall T. Peterson L.S. Skaggs Presidential Endowed Professor, Dean, University of Utah College of Pharmacy Randall T. Peterson, PhD is a chemical biologist whose research utilizes high-throughput screening technologies to discover new drug candidates for cardiovascular and nervous system disorders. Unlike conventional drug discovery programs that utilize simplified, in vitro assays, the Peterson lab screens using living zebrafish, ensuring that the drug candidates discovered are active in vivo. Several of the compounds discovered by the Peterson laboratory have become widely used research tools or are in clinical development.

Dr. Peterson received his PhD from Harvard University where he studied as a Howard Hughes Medical Institute predoctoral fellow in the laboratory of Stuart Schreiber. He completed a postdoctoral fellowship with Mark Fishman at Massachusetts General Hospital. Dr. Peterson spent 14 years as a faculty member at Harvard University where he was the Charles Addison and Elizabeth Ann Sanders Chair in Basic Science at Harvard Medical School, Scientific Director of the MGH Cardiovascular Research Center, and Senior Associate Member of the Broad Institute of Harvard and MIT. In 2017 he moved to the University of Utah as L.S. Skaggs Presidential Endowed Professor and Dean of the College of Pharmacy.

A recipient of numerous grants from the National Institutes of Health, charitable foundations, and private industry, Dr. Peterson is currently co-leader of a $12 million National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke Center of Excellence grant seeking to develop novel pharmaceutical countermeasures for cyanide exposure. He was the PI on a prestigious National Institute of Mental Health EUREKA grant and a grant from the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation. He has published more than 100 high-impact papers and delivered hundreds of lectures on the subject of drug discovery across the US and internationally.

An inventor on numerous patents, Dr. Peterson has developed methods and compositions that can be used in the treatment of conditions ranging from heart failure to epilepsy. He has founded or served as a scientific advisor to several companies including Utah companies Montigen Pharmaceuticals Inc. and Tolero Pharmaceuticals, Inc.
