If youre coming to university straight from living with your parents, the chances are your culinary skills stretch no further than beanson toast or shoving black plastic containers into the microwave. However just because youre a student doesnt mean that you haveto eat badly.

Where possible DUSA appoints local suppliers for all its food, whowe personally inspect on a regular basis. This means that if the foodyou buy on Campus has not been freshly prepared by ourselves, then it has usually been made locally that morning and deliveredto The Union before youre even out of bed. Another advantage ofvetting our suppliers is that we have condence in the provenanceof our food. When half the country discovered that they had been

unknowingly scofng horse burgers in 2013 we were happilyunaffected.

We have a very experienced retail and catering teams who ensurethat the food on campus remains affordable to students. Our

Catering Manager has been executive chef at some of Scobest ve star hotels and recently won The University CateOrganisation (TUCO) version of Master Chef. In additionfor you, his team regularly cater for the Principals VIP fuserving politicians, captains of industry and more importastars.

Our Retail Manager is an expert in the wholesale trade, conegotiating with suppliers to secure exclusive student dison your behalf. For example the seasonal fruit that you sePremier shop, will not only be cheaper than Tesco, it will husually have been delivered to us that very day from the wfruit & vegetable markets.

There are plenty of different food outlets on Campus meayou dont have to survive solely on a diet of kebabs and poFrom 8am 3am theres usually somewhere open where ybuy some wholesome, freshly prepared food at a price thacan afford. Whats more, you wont need to do any washin

Being a student at Dundee means that the

majority of your nights will be spent in The Union,

whether it be at a club night or just a few hours at

the end of a busy day. You can come to The Unionwith peace of mind knowing that the door policy isthe strictest in Dundee as only students and theirguests are allowed in. DUSA is proud to boast thatThe Union is the safest venue in Dundee thanksto the student Customer Safety team who are byfar the best in the city. Being students themselvesmeans they can relate to you and understandthe difference between rowdiness and trouble. This highly trained team have the tools to dealwith any situation properly, making not only yourexperience the best it can be but also making TheUnion a safer venue for everyone.

Obviously going to The Union isnt some sortof survival of the ttest scene out of Game ofThrones, but the simple fact of life is that someother nightclubs within Dundee have gained badreputations for some particularly nasty incidentswhich have put students health at risk. Comingto your students union means that you are ableto put any problems to the back of your mind. Youwont have to queue up for hours to be rejected forwearing trainers. If youre feeling hungry at theend of the night theres even a hot dog stall whichmeans you dont have to walk all around Dundeeto nd somewhere youre not risking getting foodpoisoning from. And when it comes to going homeand you cant afford a taxi then The Union offersa regular night bus service which will take you toyour door for free!

The Union has always been serious when itcomes to students safety. DUSA have their owndisciplinary process which is run by students toensure troublemakers are kept out of the buildingand not to mention the Zero Tolerance policy

which means you can enjoy your night withoutfear of harassment or abuse. Being a student willsometimes be stressful and DUSA want to makesure you can let your hair down and let off somesteam, and the best way to do that is to make sureyoure safe! All The Union staff (most of whom arestudents) are there to make sure you have a great, safe night which is something you wont often ndin many other places in Dundee!

    1. Dont take your bank card out partying. Withdraw sufcient moneybeforehand and that way you wont blow all your loan at once. Notonly that, you wont have the risk of losing your card!

    2. Never leave your drink unattended. If you do think someone hasspiked your drink immediately advise one of our Customer Safety

staff and they will ensure you get either safely home or to hospital.

    3. Buy a VIP Pass, it allows you to queue jump and gets youloads of discounts.

    4. Ensure your mobile phone is always charged and in credit.

    5. Keep the money you need to get home separate, so that if youredrunk you dont spend it on impulse purchases such as alcohol, fags or kebabs.

    6. Always leave a night club or pub with friends.

    7. When you get out of taxis, always check the seat where youvebeen sitting as something precious could be left behind and notalways by you! This is especially important if youve been ddlingwith your smartphone during the journey.

    8. Always keep your matriculation card in your wallet/purse youll need to present it every time you enter The Union. This is amarvellous way to keep out undesirables.

    9. The Union is open 50 weeks a year and only closes for two weeks

over the Christmas Vacation. The Union is normally open from8:30am, Monday Friday and from midday at the weekend.

    10. There are club night promotions that will let you and your friendsin to The Union for free on your birthday, so theres no excuse for notpartying at least once a year.

    11. Club night admission is 1 cheaper before midnight on Fridayand Saturday, so get there early!

    12. Arrive at The Union before midnight not only will youqueues you will increase your chances of getting a seat ansomeone who will still look nice the next morning.

    13. You can sign-in up to four non-student guests each nigUnion at a cost of 2 per person, however please ensure thor over and bring photographic proof of DOB.

    14. Do not sign-in anyone you dont know as you are resptheir behaviour and you may end-up with a life ban for somthat you personally didnt do.

    15. Remember we run a night bus service (within the Dunboundary) to get you home safely at the end of the night. 9pm we run a limited bus service from the outlying studeresidence bringing groups of four or more students to the Phone 01382 386044 and well see if we can collect you.

    FRESHERSWEEK 2014

The Freshers Pass is the only way to enjoy the once

in a lifetime experience that is Freshers Week. From

just 48.75* you can pick an d choose what act s you seefrom what, were sure youll agree, is a pretty stunning

line up. For as little as 6.10 a day you get to go to at

least two venues per night and see the likes of Sigma,

Radio 1s Scott Mills and Danny Howard, Hodor from

Game of Thrones, Neon Jungle and a whole lot more.

The Freshers Pass gives unbeatable value for money,

offering a saving of over 50% on our usual ticket prices.

If you were to buy a ticket for every event it would cost a

staggering 111, and yet were giving passes away from

just 48.75*. As any acco untancy student wor th his salt

can tell you (and they probably will, with graphs!) thats

a pretty amazing deal. So how do we do it?

Well, DUSA spends more per student on its Freshers

Week than any other student organisation in Scotland,

offering the nest opening week in the country. This

is probably one of the reasons why we are continually

voted the best students union in the country.

Freshers Week is unlike any other timein your life - youll meet more people in

a shorter space of time than ever before;have more stuff to adjust to since yourst went to primary school; and, in allprobability, youll party more than youever have in your life. And dont worry,if youre only 17, youre still invited remember The Union is YOUR privatemembers club. However please notethat if you are under 18 you will not beallowed to purchase or consume anyalcohol on the premises, but who cares at least you wont have a hangover thenext morning!

Freshers Week is essentially eightdays (or at least eight afternoons andlate nights you wont see much of themornings) of non-stop, 100% partying. With The Union open until 3am mostmornings, your week will become a bluras you nonchalantly saunter from barto bar, club to club and nally off hometo bed.

Freshers Week is about getting out thereand meeting new people. Dont worry ifyoure feeling nervous and apprehensive everyone else is in the same boat andwhen push comes to shove this is exactlywhy God created cheap cocktails. Movingon in life has never been so easy.

During Freshers Week The Union focuseson evening and nighttime entertainment(although our bars are open from 8.30amfor breakfast), however the Universityorganises many interesting events duringthe day. Our advice is to go to them all, theyre free (you dont need a FreshersPass) and youve nothing to lose andeverything to gain. There are two eventsin particular that we strongly recommendgetting out of bed for.

Flashback revives the best party classics from the last threedecades. A time when people thought: Kylie and Jason would getmarried, Oasis would Live Forever and that you were Goin Crazy forsuggesting a duet between Dizzee Rascal and Robbie Williams. Evenif you dont remember being there, youll be amazed just how muchmusic you do know.

The 1980s are a much maligned decade, and rightly so. Mobilephones had to be towed around on the back of a atbed truck;the aspirations of the nation were epitomized by Del Boy Trotter;and the threat of nuclear war led to some of the worst movies inthe history of cinema. But its the music which the 1980s are bestremembered, for God knows its not the clothes. The 80s were thedecade of pop, electronica, stadium rock, New Romantics, acidhouse and so much more.

Such was the new-found power of pop in the 1990s that the tabloidsdocumented the battles between: Oasis and Blur; East 17 and TakeThat and at the very end, Take That and Take That. The 90s may havebeen the decade of manufactured pop heaven, but it was also the

decade of Cool Britannia - a time when: Brit-pop re-crowas the music capital of the world; illegal party organizers culture corporate and pirate radio DJs took over Radio 1.

Love it or hate it, the music of the Noughties was inescapcoming from adverts, video games and that newfangled giPod. It was a decade in which the music business sufferecatastrophic collapse whilst music itself invaded every aslives. But it sometimes felt like there was no centre of poas though everything had migrated to an ever-expanding mwhere every taste was catered for. Arguably, the biggest phas not been individual artists or thrilling new genres, butdownloading, the invention of the iPod and iTunes and thezones of YouTube, MySpace and Spotify.

So heres Flashback, a rose-tinted night of pop nostalgia. root through three decades of perfect pop but without all tyou had to listen to the rst time round!

How did you rst get into the

    dance music industry?

It was an accident actually, I

was at this party where a bunchof guys hang out in a houseand play a bunch of computergames. One of my friends had afolder on his computer namedDownloads and I downloadedthe whole folder without evenlooking at what was in it.A couple of days later, I waslooking through the folder andI found this music programmeand I thought, What the hell, lets give it a go!. I startedplaying around and I couldntreally stop and after a while,I thought maybe it wassomething I should keep doingas after a while I thought Ihad the potential to becomereally good at it so it was just acoincidence really.

    Youve developed a massive

following worldwide, has thataffected how you produce

    music?

Yes, my career started inEurope and Germany and mycareer really started when I gotmy number one in the UK. Beingnumber one in Germany doesntreally generate anything in that

way but because there areso many more eyes on theUK Top 40, its a completely

different level of success. Thanks to being number onein the UK I got to New Zealand,Australia, South Africa etcso suddenly, Im producing fora worldwide crowd instead of alocal crowd and that changeshow you think about the musicand sound and theres afeeling that you want to satisfyeveryone, but its really hard.

In 2007/8 All I Ever Wanted andNow Youre Gone took the UK

by storm, how has your sound

    developed since then?

Its changed a lot, Ive beenproducing what we refer to ashands up music, kind of whatBasshunter stands for, and Ivebeen doing that for 12 years.

After a while, even though Imrepresenting that kind of music,I get tired of it. More recently

I have been a little bit lost insounds and pretty much didntreally know which direction Iwanted to go. A lot of peoplehave been following me fora long time and they want tohear the music and the old-school sound. The thing is thateven though I have updated mysound to go more mainstream,I cant move that far away frommy sound.

    In the past youve attributed

    your success to downloaders.

As an artist how does that make

    you feel?

My whole career started withdownloaders, I gave awaymy music for free and people

downloading and smusic, thats how I if someone asked m

could download myinstead of buying itI going to say? I doyou think that the menough and you thiit, why not buy a sinon iTunes and buy tsongs off the albumthen download the its up to the individ

As well as an impressiveportfolio of residenciesincluding Ministry of Sound inEgypt, Blackpool superclubSyndicate and the worlds bestnightclub, Pacha in Ibiza, Dannyis also a very inuential musicproducer. Working with the likesof Tiesto, Paul Oakenfold andDavid Guetta, Dannys sexyhouse sound has becomea danceoor trademark, electrifying clubbers withhands-in-the-air breakdowns,

    hard kicks and dirty basslines.

Prior to jetting off back to thesuperclubs in the Balearics,Fridge managed to get a quickchat with this superstar DJ.

Its been two years since you last DJed at The Unionin Dundee, what have youbeen up to?Has it really been two years?Where to begin Well, DanceAnthems has been going fromstrength to strength werepulling in over two millionlisteners each week now whichis just incredible, add to that aweekly show on SiriusXM Radioin the US too Ive been playingall over the world at some

amazing venues, Ive releasedtwo albums and been spendingmore time in the studioproducing. Now its summer soIm back at Pacha!

As the voice of Radio 1sDance Anthems, how doesthat work alongside yourweekly Pacha residency? Its a very big rush to theairport! I nish the show at 7pm,and the ight is at 9pm, so Iliterally have an hour to get tothe airport. As soon as I hit playon the last record, Im out thedoor, onto the tube, get the tubeto the train station, get the trainto the airport, then get on theplane! Simple as that!

So theres no pre-recording?No pre-recording always live!

Which clubs or festivalshavent you played at yet,but would like to?Ultra in Miami. Tomorrowlandin Belgium! I would really loveto play those festivals! In theUK, it was always my dream toplay Creamelds and GlobalGathering. Global was the rstfestival I ever went to and I

Over the years The Union has hosted a plethora of TV celebrities. From cast members of scripted reality shows such as Made inChelsea and Geordie Shore to actors from BAFTA winners such

as The Inbetweeners and Skins, if a TV show has been ravedabout in Heat magazine, weve had one or two of its stars cometo Dundee. We usually have a few celebs making a personalappearance during Freshers Week and this year is no differentwith top TOWIE totty Dan Osborne heading north to join the party!

For those of you unfamiliar with Dan let us give you the low-down. Dan made his dbut appearance on TOWIE last year duringseries 8. He quickly became an audience favourite, with his envyinducing buff physique and smooth charm resulting in a brief ingwith Lucy Meck last summer. This year Dan put his bulging bicepsand toned abs to good effect releasing his own calendar shot onlocation in Majorca. Looking ABS-olutely, incredibly, ridiculouslybuff in nothing but a pair of red swimming trunks, Dans calendarbroke all sales expectations becoming a massive success. Well,no surprises there...

Dan is currently working on some exciting new projects includinga new tness website, his own clothing brand and becomingAttitude magazines new tness expert. However with rumoursthat Dan has now been befriended by Lindsay Lohan, despitebeing linked to EastEnders Jacqueline Jossa, work may be thelast thing on his mind!

    Over the years, weve literal

    specic Radio 1 DJ

How did you become a Radio 1 DJ?I did student radio when I was 15, because mymate was a student and let me help him out. ThenI got my rst proper job on radio when I was 16 atPower FM in Southampton and it literally just wentfrom there. I worked for no money for ages and Iwas rubbish to begin with, but its all about beinggiven a chance.

What do you like so much about your job?Its what Ive always wanted to do for as long as Ican remember. Ive wanted to be on Radio 1 since Iwas four: its really been that long. As I mentionedI got my rst radio job when I was 16 and I justworked and worked at it really. I cant imaginedoing anything else; its my dream job Im doingnow.

What would you say is your proudest moment atRadio 1?I always really enjoy like when we do theEdinburgh Festival shows. We started doing thatin 2009 and we did this thing called Scott Mills:The Musical, which is a complete mickey take. Itwas the most fun ever. Actual proper actors andsingers singing songs about you is really weird. Also I still get really proud about the Radio 1 BigWeekend. A lot of radio stations do festivals orevents now, but I still dont think anyone can getthe line-ups like Radio 1 can. The fact that wecan bring Lady GaGa to Carlisle or even Muse toDundee is pretty bonkers.

So you have written an autobiography; what madeyou want to write the book and why now?It wasnt even that organised. The publishersasked me if I wanted to do it and initially I said

no, because I just thought it wasnt goibe interesting. Then I thought actually probably some stuff thats fairly interelisteners of my show... theres a bit of cand Ive been quite honest really. Im nI would do it again. I found it really strtimes, like one of the hardest things Ivthink its been quite therapeutic to writIve done it I think its done and its ouIm quite pleased with it.

You say in your autobiography that youbelieve how well your career has goneyou still feel like that after more than aRadio 1?I still dont ever feel entirely at ease ocomfortable with it and thats a bad thisometimes. Im obviously aware of whand Im aware of how its gone but I thalways the less condent side of me thyeah, but youre not very good really. of people in any kind of job like this dokind of nagging self-doubt. I think it wfavour sometimes, because I still wantthat show the best show it can be and Istops you from becoming complacent.

From the age of 16 Scott Mills has owned the airwaves of the UKs FM radio. Starting with the gshift at his local radio station Power FM, Scotts rst steps on the path to fame came when he wto take over the stations drive-time show. Scotts subsequent journey to stardom took him to BrManchester and then Londons Heart FM. In 1998 he was approached by Radio 1 to host their EaBreakfast Show and in 2004 Scott took over the stations weekday afternoon show where you cnd him on Radio 1 today.

Fridge managed to catch up with Scott to ask him a few questions about working in radio, his carrecent autobiography.

coming to Freshers Week to ta

Brainchild of Australian DJ Tom Loud and powered by a top secretcarbon neutral energy source, Hot Dub Time Machine is a booty-haking mix that will have you singing, yelling WOO and chatting uphe person next to you.

Hot Dub Time Machine takes you on a funk-packed adventurehrough 60 years of music. From 60s rock and 70s disco, to the

wizardry and some good ol fashioned turntables. Time machinecabin attendant Lulu Loud appears virtually on screen to guide youhrough the space-time continuum, demonstrate dance moves and

keep the party right on track.

Tom was originally a television sound designer, working on wellknow Australian TV series such as Underbelly, Sea Patrol andMcLeods Daughters. He started DJing on Sydneys comedyscene, developing Hot Dub Time Machine in 2011 which has quicklyexploded into a full-time job, career and passion. Glynn Fussell and Amy

    Redmonds mutual love

    of camp, kitsch, festival-

    inspired, home-friendly party

    debauchery complete with

    drag, dcor and decadence

saw them form one of Londonsmost alternative and reputable

    party promoters: Sink The

Pink. Six years later its stillgoing strong, and whats more, theyre bringing their particularbrand of hedonism to The Union.Fridge got behind the party.

Whats Sink The Pinks back-story, how did it all start?Glynn: Weve been doing thenight for six years. In the pastwed been going out and everynight we attended was either toodark, or too expensive, or therewere brawls, and there werethese awful nights that werestereotyped as gay or straight. So we literally just sat thereand wrote a list of things we didand didnt like about parties.House parties were a really big

inspiration, where there areno rules, no one on the door, everyone is welcome and theresstuff happening that shouldnthappen because its behind awall. We wanted to harness thatfeeling.Amy: Wed go out in Soho andVauxhall and be like really, are

these the options? We were ina bar in Soho recently and wethought to ourselves this is whywe started Sink The Pink, guys.People posing slouched againstthe wall on their phone. It wastotally clich. We wanted tocreate our own experience thathad that feeling when youre on

the third day of a festival and itsall very celebratory. We wantedthat fancy dress, crazy feelingin a club. What kind of venues were youusing to start with?Glynn: Weve made a consciousdecision not to use a gay club. The spaces have always beenoff the beaten track so itfeels hidden. We also wantedsomewhere that, if you are a gayguy you can bring your sister oryour friend from work.Amy: Weve always done weirdspaces, like a railway arch inBethnal Green, an art gallery now were in a working mensclub in Bethnal Green. Thedownstairs is like the old boysclub and they are always stilldrinking when were in there, sotheres a nice community feelto it. Theres depth to it, ratherthan just putting on a party. Do you want people to attendSink The Pink for the spectacle just as much as the music?Glynn: We always think ours ismore like an event than a club

night. Weve got a number ofshows and were always thinkingwhat we can do at the next one.By the end of the night everyoneis in some shit outt.Amy: In London there areenough themed noveltynights, but were not abouthen party-esque lets all be

happy cowboys and Indiansstyle nonsense. But there willbe colour and the odd bollockhanging out.Glynn: Usually mine!

What many wontrealise is that Kristian is alsoa multi-talented musician withan impressive DJing careerperforming alongside acts suchas the Scissor Sisters, CalvinHarris, Mylo and Alphabeat.

Describing his deep houseDJ sets as dark, chunky andalways with attitude, Kristianbegan DJing in the long-standing Kremlin nightclub in

What Kristian is best known forhowever is his acting career.Even though his most famousrole consists of only sayingthe word Hodor, the talentedKristian estimates that he candeliver this word in well over70 different ways. Whist someconsider it both the easiest andhardest job in acting, Kristian

A little known fact isthat Kristian auditioned for thepart of Michael Armstrong in thehit British comedy Hot Fuzz, arole which subsequently went toactor Rory McCann, who Gameof Thrones fans will know asThe Hound. There have been many attempts throughout the yearsto refresh the cinema experience, from true advancesin technology such as Technicolor and Dolby Stereo tofunny gimmicks such as smell-o-vision, temperatureand 3D. Even the mighty IMAX experience has addedimmersion on an unparalleled scale - nding outthat Gandalf wears contact lenses is an eye opening

experience you simply dont get with normal cinema!

Drive-in cinema started in the US in 1933 andexperienced huge popularity until the 1970s whenit started to decline due to increasing land costsand the adoption of daylight savings time. Howevermore recently American drive-in cinemas have beenexperiencing a revival attributed to DIY movie buffs withaccess to cheaper equipment and a passion for cinema.

Here in Britain modern outdoor cinema is somethingof a novelty, usually reserved for high-end, artsy lmfestivals or niche little setups with hot tubs in London.Well in true Union style we took that nonsense andthrew it right out the window by buying our own massive30ft screen and projectors and inviting you to join us inenjoying some classic cinema on the Campus Green!

Dont worry, were not asking you to bring along yourthird-hand Vauxhall Corsa to the drive-in, just bringyourself, some money for the barbecue and maybe apicnic blanket for a chill-out to remember at the end ofthe busiest week of your University life.
