I am proud to announce that St. Jude School has been given an “A” rating on our report card. The grade is based strongly on the state ISTEP testing. It factors in the percentage of students who passed ISTEP along with the number of students who showed growth from last year. Our schoolwide pass rate for Math and Language Arts is well above the state average. We had a 75% passed Math and 83% passed Language Arts. More importantly though, of all students in 4 th -8 th grades, 94% showed growth in math and 95% showed growth in Language Arts from last year. St. Jude continues to remain a strong school academically and that is due to the outstanding teachers who strive every day to find new and innovative ways to help our students succeed. Congratulations students and teachers of St. Jude School! Keep up the good work! New Director of Music I want to welcome Mr. Ron Gage as the new Director of music for the parish. Mr. Gage started on October 1 st and has been playing for the student masses. He is currently getting to know the staff and is excited to start working with the teachers and students with Mass preparations. Mr. Gage is currently working to organize the choir and cantors to sing at Friday Masses, and plans to be practicing Wednesdays after school beginning in November. Look for more information soon! The Miracle of Life October is Respect for Life month. In past years, students have written poems, essays, and drawn posters about how we respect life from birth to natural death. This year is a very exciting year as we and the rest of St. Jude School and parish are going to have a baby! We will watch our baby grow throughout this school year with a due date in May. We’ll even have a contest to guess the day, weight, boy or girl etc. Each month, we will be learning how the baby grows, what the baby and mother need to be healthy and doing some service projects to support new mothers and babies in our community. Every month we will learn some new facts about this miracle of life. We will post new pictures and facts each month on the bulletin board in the main hallway and website. All lessons will be done in a way that is fun, informative and shows the beauty of God’s great gift of life.

St. Jude Report Card: Something to Celebrate!!

As we end the first nine weeks, students will be focused on their report card and what their grades will be. That is not just for students. The state of Indiana also grades every school on what is called, “A Student Centered Accountability Report Card”.

The Miracle of Life

October is Respect for Life month. In past years, students have written poems, essays, and drawn posters about how we respect life from birth to natural death. If you are in need of after school care on occasion, please see us about information for Eagles Nest After School Care. Thanks, Mike Obergfell, Principal ILLNESS AND SPORTS If your child is absent due to illness, they may not participate in practice, games, etc. Please remember that your child needs to be fever free for 24 hours without meds before returning to school. If a game lands on a weekend, please use good judgment for the respect of others, so that we may all stay as healthy as possible. STUDENT INSURANCE A portion of each student’s tuition is for student/athlete insurance coverage. Students have coverage for injuries and accidents that happen during the school day at St. Jude School, or while participating in extracurricular school-sponsored activities. Eligible covered expenses will be paid which are in excess of other valid and collectible insurance. Claims should be submitted to the parents’ insurance first. If an injury occurs, seek medical care through your usual providers, then contact the business manager who will obtain information required to complete the school’s portion of the claim form. The claim form will be sent to the parents, who must complete their portion. The parents then mail the completed form, along with an Explanation of Benefits from their insurance and any corresponding itemized bills, to the plan administrators’ address shown on the form. All correspondence after this point should be between the plan administrator and the parents. Completed claim forms must be submitted within 90 days of the date of the injury. PARENT TEACHER

CONFERENCES

Parent/Teacher conferences will be

held on Thursday, October 26th,

2017. There will be a 1:45

dismissal with conference times

scheduled from 2:15-7:15 p.m. on the

same day. There will be NO

SCHOOL on Friday, October 27th.

Again this year the 7th and 8th grade

teachers will be available in the

school auditorium for Arena

Conferences with no scheduled

appointments. Teachers will be

seated at different tables with a

line of chairs arranged for parents

waiting to meet that teacher. This

should allow parents to visit more of

the 7th and 8th grade teachers.

Parents will want to focus on meeting

teachers in whose classes their child

might be having a concern rather

than just going to the homeroom

teacher who only has the student

for one subject.

Students are encouraged to come to

the conference with the

parents/guardian unless otherwise

stated by the teacher.

VOLUNTEERING AND WHAT IS REQUIRED BY OUR DIOCESE TO VOLUNTEER IN OUR SCHOOLS:

Thank you to all the volunteers we currently have at St. Jude. You are vital to our school and appreciated by our kids. Anyone wanting to help drive on field trips or help in classrooms/lunchroom that has not already contacted Tera Hogan at 484-6609 or [email protected] to obtain the directions for the steps to begin the approval process to volunteer should do so today. The entire process can take weeks for approval. This is because of the background check process and because of the list of people that are in process already. Even if you think that someday you will drive for a field trip, please do not wait until the day before. Classrooms need drivers, so please contact Tera to obtain the Volunteer Application. DIOCESAN MASS AT THE COLISEUM On Thursday, October 26th students in Grade 4, 7 & 8 will travel by bus to the Coliseum and participate in the 10:30am Diocesan School Mass. All 4th grade students will be dressed as Saints. PICTURES FOR THE YEARBOOK The yearbook is in need of extra-curricular pictures, including sports clubs and special events. Group photos or individual photos accepted. Please email any pictures you have to Bethany Bessesen at [email protected]. PICTURE RETAKES THURSDAY, OCTOBER 19TH Mark your calendar for picture retakes, Thursday, October 19th. Preschool (3 Year-Olds) will have their picture taken on this day also. For those doing “Retakes” please make sure your child brings their original picture packet with a note on it stating what you don’t like about the picture. Also, PLEASE KEEP YOU CLASS PICTURE! MESSAGES AND USE OF TELEPHONE Since the start of the school year, we have been very lenient on allowing students to call home for non- emergency issues. Now that we are further into the year, we feel that reinforcing the rule of using the office phone for emergencies only will help limit disruptions in the classroom. Below is our policy that is stated in the Parent/Student handbook: Students are permitted to use the school telephone only in emergencies. The following are NOT emergencies: missing homework, missing gym clothes, missing lunch, forgotten instrument, or to visit a friend after school.

The challenge will run from now until Friday, December 1st. After Christmas we will announce the winning classroom and teacher. HASA will provide a pizza party or Ice Cream Sundae bar to the winning class and teacher. All students are encouraged to bring in Box Tops for education to their teacher. It is best if you send in box tops in a plastic bag. Put your child's teacher and room number on the bag and have your student turn it into the classroom. HASA will collect all the Box Tops on Friday, December 1st. The money received from Box Tops will go towars items needed for the school and classrooms. Attached to the newsletter is a list of products that contain Box Tops. As a reminder, we get 10¢ per box top and last year we earned over $1,000 with box tops. We are hoping to earn $2000 this year. Get Clipping! Good Luck to all the classrooms. If you have any questions please email Christine Nix at [email protected] Thanks for your help. Encourage your students to bring in those box tops. A BENCH FOR CAPS St Jude Catholic School was chosen by the Allen County Solid Waste District to participate in the “A Bench for Caps” program and Student Council has gladly taken the lead in this great program. We will collect lids/caps until November 17th. Student Council is working hard at sorting the lids and will keep track of how our collection is coming along. Once we collect 400 pounds of lids/caps, the Allen County Solid Waste District will transport them to the facility near Indianapolis and will transport our bench to us (at no charge to us)! Please see the attached flyer for details. Any lid/cap is acceptable, however there can be NO METAL or PAPER and they must be clean. Any problems and the company can refuse the entire collection! 8th Grade Confirmation

Saturday, October 28th at

10.00am

Confirmation is just two weeks away!

Wow, it doesn't seem possible. Each

student chose a saint and researched

what his or her life was like and how

they lived out their holiness according

to God’s will. Saints were chosen

because they have a special meaning to

each teen. Just two weeks ago, our

eighth graders were at St. Rose out in

Monroeville for a day of reflection and

spiritual growth. Many family and

friends wrote letters inspiring and

encouraging our eighth graders to

continue to grow in their faith and

serve the Lord as He calls us. Last

weekend, our students stood in church

and professed their desire to be

confirmed. Each was given a red

bracelet as a visible reminder to

themselves and to the rest of the

parish. When you see one of the

eighth graders with the red bracelets,

ask them their saint's name, or simply

let them know you are praying for

them. Confirmation practice will be on

Tuesday, October 24th after Mass.

Eighth grade parents, our Novena

starts on the 19th.

PRE-K FATHER’S NIGHT

is on

Tuesday October 17 and

Thursday, October 19

from

6:30pm – 7:30pm

We are looking forward to

seeing you!

and Mrs. Henline

SCRIP EXPRESS Volume18 Issue 5 October 15, 2017 The “hustle and bustle” of the Holiday Season will quickly be upon us. In addition to providing new information, we hope that this newsletter will answer questions you may have as you plan your Holiday SCRIP shopping. We are still working on our annual “Christmas Merchant List” and will have it ready for distribution in November. We have been busy contacting local merchants and our national SCRIP broker in an effort to bring you additional places to use SCRIP for all your Christmas gift giving, entertaining, and holiday needs. We are still waiting to hear back from a few local merchants in regards to participating in the SCRIP program. Keep in mind that you can always Special Order/Prepay from our national SCRIP broker. Beginning Saturday, November 25th, we will be selling SCRIP every weekend up through Christmas. You will be able to purchase SCRIP on Tuesdays via Kidmail and in the Parish Center on Wednesday evenings (5:30-6:30pm) and Thursday mornings (7.30-9.30am). You may also drop off your completed order form, with payment, at the Parish Office. Your filled order will be available for “express pick-up” at the next scheduled SCRIP sale. To help us reduce mistakes, please take the time to double check your order form before sending it in. It may be helpful to “jot down” what you ordered via Kidmail, or if possible, make a copy of your order form. If you feel a mistake has been made or if you are unsure of what you ordered, please contact a SCRIP Coordinator as soon as possible. Also, check with your responsible child before leaving carline pick-up (if possible) regarding your Kidmail SCRIP. Classrooms get hectic at the end of the school day (especially in the Junior High) and the teacher may have forgotten to return it or the class may have had a substitute teacher that day. If for whatever reason your responsible child didn’t get in the car with your Kidmail SCRIP, go back into school and ask the teacher about it, if possible. We strongly suggest that you “plan ahead” when purchasing your SCRIP for the holidays as some vendors need 2-3 working days notice while others only allow us to order once a week. In addition, during the busy holiday season, our national broker will begin to extend their delivery guarantee by a few days. Keep this in mind when placing a Special Order/Prepay. Contact us if you are concerned about your order arriving by the date needed. Please give us a “heads up” if you need a large quantity of SCRIP from any one vendor. Even though SCRIP is “in stock” from the merchants listed on the order form, we may not have the amount you desire. Generally, any request for over $300 from a specific vendor (excluding Meijer, Kolh’s & WalMart) is required to be ordered via the Special Order/Prepay Program.
