The 2012 State of Origin came down to the fi nal game of the 2012 series which was played last Wednesday night.

As a side line to the series the Queensland Police Service has started a fundraising campaign to assist the Royal Children’s Hospital Foundation.

Police Commissioner Bob Atkinson and Minister Jack Dempsey last week unveiled the 2012 Queenslander Car! The car is a fully opera-tional police car, decorated with decals to support the Queensland State of Origin side. The players all sign the bonet of the vehicle.

This vehicle is then used offi cially for the normal duration of the life of the vehicle, which is antici-pated to be about Novembe, 2012. The car will be used at a range of community, sporting and recruitment events including the EKKA, and will be seen throughout much of Queensland.

Last year’s bonnet at auction at the annual PCYC Gala Dinner raised more than $7200.

Over a large number of years many Queensland police offi cers have been involved with the State of Origin games as players and coaches. Just two names that immediately come to mind are Wayne Bennett and Mal Meninga.

Keep an eye out - who knows, you might even see the car around.

News from the Maleny SES GroupSES members are some of the fi rst people Queenslanders call upon for help during a natural disaster, so it’s no surprise they have ranked among the most trusted professionals in the annual 2012 Reader’s Digest poll. Rescue volunteers, which include SES members, placed

third on the list.

Now in its eighth year, the prestigious Pride of Australia Medal recognises those throughout the community who encourage and inspire us every day. Perhaps you may know of an SES member who should be nominated.

The Maleny SES Group trains on Monday Nights at the SES HQ in the showgrounds (the big green building on the left). Training starts at 7pm (be there at quarter to seven just to be early) and fi nish about 9.30 pm.

It matters little what the monetary penalty is or how much education is given there are some drivers who just will not take notice of the road rules. Sometimes this is because they are not aware that road rules change from time to time. One of our readers suggested that we should have a quick refresher of some of those rules. The most dangerous thing about travelling in a motor vehicle is still the “NUT BEHIND THE WHEEL”.

Education Offi cers

It is that time of year again when we should be preparing for the coming summer season by car-rying out some preventative maintenance, particularly on rural properties.

Sunshine Coast Rural Council workers will conduct approximate-ly 12 controlled burns at specifi c sites across the Sunshine Coast over the next two months.

The aim of these burns is to reduce the volume of forest fuels and to create a mosaic pattern of burnt and unburnt areas within these parks and bushlands.

Doing this will help reduce the in-tensity of any subsequent wildfi res if they were to occur and reduce the risk to Sunshine Coast resi-dents and properties.

Residents living in the immediate vicinity of the prescribed burns will be notifi ed of the activities and provided with contact details for council’s Bushfi re Management Offi cer.

Local hospitals to be run by local boards

As from July 1st, 2012 local hospi-tals in Queensland will once again come under the direction of local health boards.

Queensland Health will soon an-nounce the formation of 17 boards totake over the management of resources and staff as part of a widespread decentralisation of the Queensland health system.

This is not a new idea as local hospi-tal boards controlled local hospitals from the early 1970’s until 1989 when the hospital board structure was abolished and replaced with Regional Health Authorities by the incoming Goss Labour government.

Regional Health Authorities were given greater budget autonomy which led to unsustainable fi nance and human resource models.

Regional Health Authorities were subsequently replaced by 38 Dis-tricts.

Local Hospital Boards are expected to be able to maintain closer man-agement decisions to the point, or hospital that would be most ef-fected by the decisions made and as a result any necessary remedial action to those decisions can be made in a much quicker and more effi cient manner.

News from Ebenezer

by LenoreOur Baby Home is getting fi lled up very fast.

This little baby was brought in a few hours after his birth when his mother died after being transferred to the General Hos-pital from a nearby village. His name is Moses.

There are 14 babies now and our Toddler section is full to capacity. Our last arrival Ernest was trau-matized by a very unkind aunt and grandmother, who starved him most of the time and sent him to school unwashed and unkempt. He was a very sad fi ve year old before coming here but now his life has changed so much we can barely recognize him from the unhappy little boy he was!

Surely children need to be loved deeply! All they ask for is a little attention and genuine love.

Children who get an eductaion have a greater chance of a future. If you can help the Ebenezer Childcare Trust Orphanage in Livingstone, Zambia you can ring Lenore on 5429 6194 or vitit the Friends of Ebenezer web site at: http://http://www.friendsofe-benezeraustralia.com/

Truthful Jones Tells... he heard about his neigh-bour Paddy’s wife one day last week was sitting at the bar staring at her drink when a large, trouble-mak-ing biker steps up next to her, grabs her drink and gulps it down in one swig.

“Well, whatcha gonna do about it?” he says, menacingly, as Paddy’s wife burst into tears. “Come on, lady,” the biker says, “I didn’t think you’d cry. I can’t stand to see a lady crying.”

“This is the worst day of my life,” I say. “I’m a complete failure. I was late to a meeting and my boss fi red me. When I went to the parking lot, I found my car had been stolen and I don’t have any insurance. I left my wallet in the cab I took home. I found my old man in bed with the housekeeper, and then my dog bit me.”

“So I came to this bar to work up the courage to put an end to it all, I buy a drink, I drop a capsule in and sit here watching the arsenic dissolve.

Then some jack-ass shows up and drinks the whole thing! But enough about me, how’s your day going?”

Solar electricity scheme attacked by governments

Within days the introduction of the carbon tax will be upon us. This tax has been introduced to save our environment for future generations.

Ironically, the solar panel scheme, which was introduced to help reduce the amount of electricity generated by burning coal, thus re-ducing the amount of greenhouse gas generated has been attacked by both Australia’s federal and state governments.

Energy Minister Mark McArdle has now announced changes which will see the feed-in rebate for electricity generated by new installations will be reduced reduced from 44 cents/kW to just 8 cents/kW.

This is despite a commitment be-fore the last state election that this feed-in tariff would not be reduced.

On top of this tariff cut the solar scheme has also suff ered a cut in the amount paid to assist families to install their own solar panels.

Mr McArdle said households that lodged an Inverter Energy System connection application by midnight on July 9 would still be eligible for the 44 cents/kW tariff .

He continued that the rebate needs to be wound back in an eff ort to reduce the cost of power to those who do not have solar panels in-stalled for power generation.

It is believed that this tariff reduc-tion would slow the number of panels being installed by home-owners thus increasing the need to continue to use coal for the genera-tion of electricity.

It is not often that you can go to see a feature fi lm and see scenes fi lmed around locations that you see on a very regular basis in everyday life situations.

This is just the coast when the pro-ducers of the $700,000 feature fi lm “Ryder Country” made it almost entirely on the Sunshine Coast

Much of the fi lm was shot on loca-tion at Buderim, Maroochydore, Noosa, Eudlo and Cooloolabin Dam at Yandina, as well as a handful of scenes in Brisbane and the Gold Coast.

The dramatic thriller stars Sea Patrol heart throb Conrad Coleby, as well as Australian screen icons Rowena

Wallace and Peter Sumner.

‘Ryder Country’ was directed and co-produced by Gareth Lee, of Buderim, and Andrew Dudek, of Noosa, and funded almost entirely by local investors, including healthy cook book guru Annette Sym.

“The whole process of making Ry-der Country encouraged creativity and the arts locally, but also fea-tures location shots that will help to promote the Sunshine Coast re-gion. It’s been a very worthwhile experience all round,” Mrs Sym said.

The production was delayed by the usual fi lmmaking gremlins, including budget short falls, crea-tive challenges, a director who left

the project, and re-writes, re-shoots and re-edits.

Along with Coleby, Wallace and Sumn-er, the ’Ryder Coun-try’ cast includes Jeff Gannon, Lara Cox, Kim Jackson, Greg Hatton, Luke

Sumner and Ray Sinclair.

“It’s been encouraging to be able to put together such a talented and committed cast, backed up by an enthusiastic and hardworking crew, and with the fi nancial and business support of a group of committed local investors,” Mr Dudek said.

‘Ryder Country’ follows fi ve ambi-

tious medical research scientists who are hand-picked by a re-nowned professor to join him on an expedition deep into remote bushland, on the promise of fi nding the secret to the fountain of youth. However, not all is as it seems as, one-by-one, the bodies start piling up.

The team behind the project is now promoting the fi lm for screening at major fi lm festivals. Ideally, it hopes for selection at the Brisbane International Film Festival.

The fi lm’s marketing team is also in discussions with a national tour-ism body. Who knows it may be screened locally by the Maleny Film Society!

Mr Lee and Mr Dudek, along with talented Yandina-based writer Blake Brierty, who has optioned two screenplays, are now in the early stages of preparation on a second feature fi lm, which they plan to shoot on the Sunshine Coast next year.

The music is great, the songs scintil-lating, the G & S plot delightfully silly, the lead singers outstanding, the choristers exuberant, the Tower of London awesomely replicated – and oh the costumes!

There they are. A dozen stalwart representatives of Maleny man-hood clobbered up in scarlet gold-embroidered knee-length tunics with neck frills, billowing sleeves, ballooning pantaloons, black stock-ings, white gloves, fancy footwear and baggy hats.

Perhaps modesty ruled out thigh-high hosiery and cod–pieces - those cocky accoutrements of Elizabethan masculinity and virility – but nit-picking is uncalled for in the overall excellence of yet anoth-er major Margaret Taylor operetta featuring the Maleny Singers.

For more than a decade now the company has progressed its skills with ‘The Yeomen of the Guard’ its most accomplished production yet.

Director and performers exude assurance and authority. This de-

spite a plot that references medie-val torture and an imminent public execution. Only Gilbert could turn this into a barrel of laughs and inspire some of Sullivan’s fi nest orchestral music.

The show’s hauntingly poignant signature song – ‘The Merryman and his Maid’ – is worth the ticket price alone. It sent shivers up my spine.

There are two more performances still to come. So get yourselves to the Tower of London forthwith where the men in red are urgently demanding your attention. Or else risk the terminal inconvenience of losing your heads.

Don’t get scammed this

tax time!TAX commissioner Michael D’Ascenzo says that as the time to lodge your tax returns is just around the corner, the Austra-lian Taxation Offi ce is warning taxpayers to be on alert for scammers.

Scammers are using increasingly sophisticated methods to trick people into giving away their money or personal details, such as their tax fi le number.

To catch people off guard, scam-mers use phone calls, letters, SMS messages, emails, bogus websites and even fake job ad-vertisements.

So far this year, there have been 5000 reports of people receiving emails trying to falsely obtain information by pretending to represent ATO, and 3000 reports of attempted phone scams.

Once scammers have personal details they can lodge false tax returns in your name, transact using your credit card informa-tion or take out a loan in your name.

On August 18th and 19th the Blackall Range Horseless Carriage Club wil be running their biennial rally once more.

The Montville Country Run brings together veteran, vintage and clas-sic vehicles for a drive through the beautiful Blackall Range, in the year that the Club is celebrating its 20th anniversary.

It is a fund raiser for the Blackall Range Care Group which serves the elderly and younger disabled residents of the area.

Many car clubs from around south-east Queensland will be joining us, so any support from the “locals” would be welcome.

Saturday will be a run from Le Relais Bressan at Flaxton to Pomona, fol-lowed by a car display on Montville

Oval and dinner with presenta-tions at Tranquil Park.

Sunday will be an “observation rally” from Pris-cilla Cottage to Maroochy Botanic Gardens for lunch, via all those glo-rious back roads we enjoy so much.

If you have an older car, or even if you have more than a passing inter-est in our vehicles, give us a call.

Further details of all activities will be posted as the rally gets nearer, but if anyone would like to know more in the meantime, please ring Graham Bailey (Secretary) on 5494 9073 or Norm Mackay (President) on 5435 2139.

LNP fi ghts to keep Qld pineapple and ginger farms disease free

The Federal Government has made a decision to allow pineapple im-ports from Malaysia. Local Member, Mr. Andrew Powell said that the Queensland Government would do everything possible to reverse this decision.

Our area, The Glasshouse electorate in Queensland is one of the most important pineapple and ginger growing areas in the state with the in-dustry worth $80 million annually – underpinning more than 1000 jobs on Queensland farms and through the supply chain during the peak season and a history of over 100 years.

Queensland’s Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry Minister said, “This is one of the worst decisions made by this anti-agriculture Labor government in Canberra and there have been a few shockers so far. I am calling on them to reconsider the facts and make a diff erent decision: one which will protect Queensland families and jobs.” Mr McVeigh continued on to says that if Canberra’s decision was allowed to proceed, Queensland’s pineapple industry risked being decimated by exotic diseases like bacte-rial heart rot and fruit collapse.

Mr McVeigh said he would also be fi ghting Canberra’s proposal to allow fresh ginger imports from Fiji which risked further bacterial diseases along with contaminated soil.

Brown or rusty stains on your ceil-ing or wall are usually the sign of a leaky roof or insuffi cient ventila-tion.

Before you begin trying to clean up the stain, try to determine what caused it. Before you re-paint the ceiling fi x the outstand-ing problem because the ceiling stains will quickly return if you don’t. Once you’ve solved that problem, here are suggestions for getting rid of the stain.

* Purchase a stain remover (available from home centers), and spray some of it onto a dry cloth.

* Use the cloth to rub the stain lightly.

* Wash the area with a solution of clean water and vinegar (about 25% mix of vinegar). Leave a few minutes and then wash off with a clean cloth. Leave the area to completely dry out.

* Use a white-pigmented shel-lac or stain-blocker to conceal the stain. Zinsser Bullseye has a very eff ective product. Spray or paint it on the wall. This will help to prevent the stain from bleeding through the paint.

* Once the shellac dries, paint the wall the color of your choice.

* If you notice signs of mildew stains in your bathroom or kitch-en, follow these same steps to stop the mildew from spreading.

Once the area is cleaned and repainted it is possible to apply a product called, “Wet and Forget” as a maintenance product. This product is applied and then left on the surface - not cleaned off .

Over a period of time it continu-ally reactivates itself and continu-ally eats away growing mould.

The Musings of an old codger!

Over the past few weeks we should have been seeing lower petrol pricing as in Aussie dollar terms the Singapore unleaded price has fallen by $12 in the past fortnight and is now holding at an 18-month low.

Petrol prices in Australia are governed by The Singapore petrol price plus shipping costs and Australian taxes.

Through the ACCC there is al-legedly a check made on petrol pricing with Mr Joe Dimasi from the ACCC being the Petrol Com-missioner.

Last week the national weekly metropolitan retail price was 2.4 cents lower at 138.4 cents a litre.

Importantly, the falls are yet to be fully refl ected at petrol sign-boards across the nation.

Mum and Dad motorists fi nd it hard to understand how petrol prices are calculated when they see the low price in the petrol cycle, which is on average about 10 days being around $1.32 a litre, and the high price in the cycle be-ing over $1.50 a litre.

These prices are normally set by BP and Caltex petrol companies. The prices are not set as a result of costs to the petrol companies, more likely prices refl ect the sup-ply and demand for the product.

Whilst petrol companies and governments are not expected to operate at a loss, it is morally expected that those companies would operate ethically and not gouge money from Australians to unfairly make huge profi ts.

The fi rst budget for the newly elected Sunshine Coast Council has been handed down. The Council-weill spend $604 million dollars in the 2012 - 2013 fi nancial year.

Local council rates will rise by 3.6% .

The capital works program of $146 million including $18 million for land acquisitions associated with the Maroochydore principal activity centre.

Mayor Jamieson said, “This bud-get takes us another step closer to a sustainable community and lifestyle, a sustainable environment and sustainable economy.”

He also said, “ A general rate increase of 3.6% is below council’s real costs and at the lower end for Queensland councils.”

There will also be no increase in the cost of key levies such as the envi-ronment, public transport, tourism and heritage levies.

There will also be a continuation of pension remissions. This is exti-mated to cost the council an esti-

mated $3.8 million. The continua-tion of the early payment discounts is estimated to cost a further $8.8 million.

Waste management charged will rise by 9.2% despite the introduc-tion of a federal carbon tax.

Cr Jamieson said the council had made the tough decisions needed to keep the rate rise at the lower end for Queensland councils while maintaining infrastructure and services.

Other items that the budget in-cludes are:

+ $23.7 million for environment programs

+ $8.5 million for community grants and partnership pro-grams

+ $7.1 million for libraries+ $5.2 million for public transport

initiatives+ $1.9 million for major events

and festivals such as the PGA, Noosa and Mooloolaba tri-athlons and Caloundra Music Festival

Cr Jamieson said that the average ratepayer will pay less than a dollar a week extra for rates and waste. This budget will make sure we lay the ground work to make the most of these opportunities - while at the same time ensuring the Sunshine Coast place remains a great place to live.
