MOHAYMEN SHARP AS 2016 DEBUT NEARSBy Tom LaMarra

Mohaymen, widely regarded as the top East

Coast-based 3-year-old at this point on the

Triple Crown trail, appears cranked for his 2016

debut in the Jan. 30 Holy Bull Stakes (gr. II) at

Gulfstream Park.

Trainer Kiaran McLaughlin said he was pleased

with the Tapit colt's Jan. 21 work at Palm Mead-

ows Training Center—five furlongs in :59 1/5, a bit

faster than he had anticipated. McLaughlin, how-

ever, wasn't concerned given the way Mohaymen

handled himself in the drill.

"It was a little quicker, but he is just doing so

well," McLaughlin said. "He did it all on his own

and he doesn't blow at all coming back. He cools

out so quickly. We're all set (for the Holy Bull)."

The 1 1/16-mile stakes is a "Road to the Ken-

tucky Derby" race; Mohaymen currently has 10

points, and a victory in the Holy Bull would add 10

more.

The $2.2 million Keeneland September yearling

sale purchase is three-for-three with two stakes

wins: the Nashua and Remsen (both gr. II). BH

KINGMAMBO LINE LIVES ONBy Evan Hammonds

Even though Kingmambo was pensioned follow-

ing the 2009 breeding season, his death earlier

this week has left behind more than the faded

memories of his sire and dam, Mr. Prospector and

Miesque, and of his own success as classic winner

and classic sire.

His bloodlines are readily available in Europe, as

Coolmore stands both Henrythenavigator (winner

of the English and Irish Two Thousand Guineas and

second in the 2008 Breeders' Cup Classic, all gr. I)

and Thewayyouare (group I winner) in Ireland, while

Archipenko (group I winner and Arlington Million, gr.

IT, runner-up) stands at Lanwades Stud in England.

One of his best sons, King Kamehameha, stands in

Japan.

In the U.S., 1999 Belmont (gr. I) winner and 2000

champion older horse Lemon Drop Kid carries the

main torch at Lane's End Farm in Kentucky, and King-

mambo also has sons standing in North Dakota and

Texas.

Lemon Drop Kid—the sire of 89 stakes winners—

has been more prolific with fillies, such as Somali

Lemonade, Citronnade, and Lemons Forever, but he

has sons Balance the Books and Richard's Kid in Cali-

fornia, Hangover Kid in Maryland, and Cosmonaut in

New York. BH

SHEIKH FAHAD MAKES EARLY 3YO MARKBy Naohiro Goda

Sheikh Fahad Al Thani doesn't have a huge 3-year-

old team in Japan, but they've made a great start.

Sheikh Fahad, a member of the Qatar royal family

best known as the owner of Peace

and War, Dunaden, and Simple

Verse, has three 3-year-olds in Ja-

pan, all with Mitsu Nakauchida.

With Pearl Code's victory in a

Kyoto maiden for unraced 3-year-

olds Jan. 17, all three are now

winners.

Pearl Code, bred by Teruya

Yoshida, is out of Canadian cham-

pion mare Magic Code. Sheikh

Fahad bought the colt by Victoire

Pisa at the JRHA Select Sale for

$137,255.

That followed the successful

debut of the King Kamehameha colt

Great Pearl in a Kyoto maiden Jan. 5.

Pearl Future, a Neo Universe colt, won a maiden in

August.

One Japanese-bred Sheikh Fahad-owned 3-year-

old not racing in Japan is the Deep Impact colt out of

Listen that Sheikh Fahad bought at JRHA for a sale-top-

ping ¥260 million ($2.55 million). Trained by Roger

Varian at Newmarket, he has not started yet. BH

RAMSEYS PLAY THE NAME GAMEBy Ron Mitchell

Multiple Eclipse Award-winning owners Ken and

Sarah Ramsey have played the Thoroughbred

"name game" with great success, especially having so

many foals by Kitten's Joy, the promi-

nent stallion who stands at their farm

and whose name derives from Ken's

nickname for his wife.

For example, grade I winner

Bobby's Kitten was named to hon-

or their late Hall of Fame trainer

Bobby Frankel, and 2015 champion

male turf horse Big Blue Kitten was

named after the "big blue" sports

teams at the University of Kentucky.

The Ramseys have turned to

Facebook, listing the sex, sire, dam,

and broodmare sire of 84 just-

turned 2-year-olds, so fans can sug-

gest names that must be submitted

to The Jockey Club before Feb. 1.

In addition to the 18-character (letters and spaces)

limit on names, the only other stipulation is that "if

the sire is Kitten's Joy, we use the word KITTEN in the

name, not cat or some cat reference, but KITTEN,"

according to Ramsey Farm's Facebook page. BH

MW INTERVIEW WITH FRANCIS VANLANGENDONCKBy Ron Mitchell

This week's MarketWatch interview is

with Francis Vanlangendonck, who

with his wife Barbara, operates Morriston,

Fla.-based Summerfield Sales. Summer-

field is consistently among the leading

consignors at the Ocala Breeders' Sales

Co.'s January mixed sale, which takes

place Jan. 27-28 in Ocala, Fla., and will be

preceded by the OBS Championship stakes

Jan. 26.

MarketWatch: How have the breeding

and sales industries in Florida, like all states,

recovered from the effects of the national

recession?

Francis Vanlangendonck: Florida has

consistently had the second largest foal crop

in North America. It is the only state to have

increased foal production in the last three

consecutive years, and it appears that 2015

will continue that trend. Ocala Breeders'

Sales Company continues to dominate the

2-year-old in training market, and the year-

ling sale is showing a steady increase.

MW: There has been an influx of new

stallions in the Sunshine State for the 2016

breeding season. What effect will this have

on the industry?

FV: The increased number of stallions to

Florida is a reflection of how well the state

develops a young sire. I moved here in 1979,

and I've seen dozens of freshman sires that

have made their marks on a national level.

And the implementation of the Florida Sire

Stakes has also increased the value of Flori-

da-sired progeny.

MW: What effect, if any, has adding the sup-

plemental catalog had on the OBS winter sale?

FV: The supplemental catalog for horses of

racing age has been a great success. It gives

sellers the option to place horses in a central

sales location and it gives buyers the op-

portunity to find a race-ready animal. Some

significant horses have come out of this sale.

MW: The largest segment of the winter

mixed sale is the just-turned yearlings. How

do you decide which to offer in January and

which to retain for later in the year?

FV: Short yearlings account for over 50%

of the sale, with influential sires such as

Uncle Mo, Curlin, and Scat Daddy offered.

Marketing an animal as a short yearling is of-

ten the best choice for an owner. Reasons for

such a choice might include cash flow, matu-

rity of the individual, or significant updates in

the family.

MW: Is there anything you feel needs to be

changed about the winter mixed sale and/or

any other aspect of the Florida sales calen-

dar?

FV: OBS continues to make thoughtful and

significant changes in order to accommodate

both buyers and sellers. We are starting off

2016 with a significant change by replacing

our previous "limited bone warranty" condi-

tion with a repository for all sales. This move

will give buyers and sellers the same com-

mon industry standard found at other sale

companies. BH
