Add a new dimension to your winter outings when you join local plant experts to learn the secrets to identifying local shrubs and trees without their leaves. The Native Plant Salvage Foundation is offering “Winter Twig Identification,” a 2.5‐hour field class held on Sunday, Jan 22. Choose either a morning or an afternoon session. 

These “walking workshops” will take place on a West Olympia‐area nature trail. Small groups of learners will be matched with knowledgeable instructors to learn the keys to identify over 25 native plants. The skill is useful for gardeners and anyone who enjoys spending time outdoors throughout the year. The class will cost a small fee (TBD).

The Entomology Graduate Student Association (EGSA) is selling desk calendars as a fundraiser for their activities. The calendar features photographs by graduate students and professors, in a clean, 

informative way, and is acceptable for both academic audiences and the broader community. They will be available through the end of January 2017. The cost is $10, and anyone interested can contact Abigail Cohen at: abigail.cohen@wsu.edu. We hope that these will make nice gifts for anyone looking for a small present for friends or family, or a nice treat for yourself if you’d like an interesting display of beneficial insects and spiders year‐round!
