This year’s show is Heathers the Musical which will run all next week – February 27 to March 2 – starting with the preview show on Tuesday February 27. This year’s show is based on a 1980’s movie of the same name and has also been performed as a Broadway musical. Unlike last year’s production of Willy Wonka, the Heathers is a much more serious show that addresses some fairly significant issues facing our youth in high school today, including bullying, harassment, suicide and depression, and more seriously, the sometimes tragic consequences these issues and behaviours have for young people. Therefore, it is a show that is recommended for more mature audiences and would not be recommended for young children. Our version of the Heathers has been tailored for a high school audience, and our musical theatre teachers, Mr. Ablitt, choose this musical as they felt it was important to tackle and address some of these important issues. The show runs each evening at 7:00 pm with a Saturday matinee on March 2 nd starting at 2:00 pm. Tickets are available online at Brown Paper Tickets via the link found below. Congratulations Parmjot Sidhu – Provincial Wrestling Champion!

Congratulations to grade 11 Poppy student, Parmjot Sidhu, who captured his second consecutive Provincial Wrestling Championship this past Tuesday at the B.C. High School Wrestling Championships held at the Langley Events Centre! Parmjot won the Gold medal in the 57 kg division. Without a Langley United Wrestling team this year, Parmjot trained and competed on his own with the assistance of his club wrestling coach but represented Poppy at the Championships! Way to go, Parm! We are already looking forward to a three-peat in 2020!

Congratulations Senior Boys Basketball Team!

Last Friday afternoon, our Senior Boys Basketball team played one of their best games of the season, crushing archrival Aldergrove Secondary School by a score of 69-38! The victory carried extra significance as the win qualified the team for the AAA Boys Fraser Valley Championships, a great accomplishment and one of the team’s goals at the start of the season. The boys opened the Fraser Valleys last night with a loss to a very strong G.W. Graham and play their next game today vs. Delta. Good luck to Coach Leino and the team!

Second Semester Interim Reporting Week March 4 to 8

Monday March 4 to Friday March 8 is our second semester interim reporting week. The expectation at D.W. Poppy is that all teachers will be communicating to parents the current progress of all their students in Semester 2 classes at some point during the week. Please note that teachers of linear classes are NOT required to provide an interim as linear classes were just reported on in the second formal report card. Please note that the interim reporting period is an informal reporting period; therefore, individual teachers will be communicating student progress to parents in a variety of ways. Due to current FOIPPA concerns, teachers are not able to email progress reports home to parents. This means that all interim reports will be provided through the following ways:

• Printed progress reports in class

• Student self-assessments or feedback forms in class

• Updated progress reports on a teacher’s website or MyEDBC

• Phone calls home to parents Please be aware that the current progress of students is only based on a few weeks of learning and classroom work. Therefore, the information teachers provide next week is only a very small snap shot of a student’s learning. Also, as a school, we are working on using assessment practices that focus on providing students with effective feedback, not marks or grades, to help them improve their learning. Therefore, at this interim period, some teachers will not be providing a letter grade, as they will not have collected enough assessment data to provide an accurate letter grade at this time. The expectation for teachers is that they will have communicated your child’s progress to you and/or your child by Friday March 9 at the very latest. If you and/or your son/daughter have not received any progress reports from a teacher by the end of next week, please contact the teacher directly or contact the appropriate Vice-Principal.

Students Signing Out of School

Please be aware of our new sign out process for students. Students and parents will no longer find the sign out sheet on the front counter at the main office. Instead, any student who needs to sign out of school for the day needs to come to the main office and speak to our clerical staff at the main counter. Our clerical staff will NOT sign any student out of school without first speaking to a parent or unless they have received a phone call from a parent in advance. If you are picking your child up from school for an appointment or other reason, you will either need to come into the school and speak to our clerical staff or call in advance and let our clerical staff know you are signing your child out. Any students who leave school without following this process will be considered as unexcused absence.

Otter Co-Op Receipts

The D.W. Poppy PAC collects Otter Co-Op Grocery and Department store receipts (excluding gas and feed department) to turn into gift cards for use at school events such as dry grad, staff and bus driver appreciations. Please drop off your receipts in the collection box located by the school office.

Advanced Placement (AP Exams)

Advanced Placement Exams will be held in May for those students currently enrolled in an AP Course at D.W. Poppy. AP exams give students the opportunity to earn post-secondary credit if they achieve a qualifying score. Each AP exam costs $130. Students wishing to take an exam are asked to make a payment through our online system: https://sd35.schoolcashonline.com/ Payments are due February 28, 2019. Only students who pay for an exam in advance will have one ordered for them. Please see below for the list of exams that will be offered this year: AP English Language and Composition AP English Literature and Composition AP Physics C: Mechanics AP Calculus AB

PaperCut – Student Printing

Over the past couple of years, we have noticed a significant increase in the amount of student printing and paper use from our school printers. We have been monitoring student printing habits this year and are noticing that students are printing excessive amounts of pages and documents on school printers that are really not necessary to be printed. As a result, effective Monday February 11, students will have a $5.00 printing limit for the remainder of the school year. Each page that a student prints will cost 8 cents and this amount will be removed from a students’ account each time they print. Once a student has used up all of their $5, they will need to see Mr. Janzen in the Learning Commons and pay to have additional funds added to their printing account. It is our hope that this process will lead to students being more diligent and less wasteful in their day to day printing habits.

Student Learning Survey 2019

Parents and caregivers of students in grades ten and twelve, on an annual basis, the Ministry of Education has asked B.C. Schools to participate in a survey process that requires grade ten and grade twelve students and their parents as well as all school staff to complete a Student Learning Survey. The primary objective of the Student Learning Survey is to provide information that will support discussions about improving student achievement at each school. The survey gathers perceptions from students, parents, and staff on areas including achievement, human and social development, and safety. The information collected by the survey will help schools, school districts, and the Ministry set goals and establish priorities for future school years. Please note: The surveys are NOT available in paper format. If you do NOT have internet access at home and would like to complete the survey, please contact the school to set up a convenient time to complete the survey at DW Poppy Secondary on our computer network. You may access this survey at: www.bced.gov.bc.ca/sat_survey/access.htm Parents will NOT require PINs to access the survey and can use the direct access option to logon to the survey. The survey is quite simple and takes less than 10 minutes. The satisfaction survey needs to be completed before April 15, 2019. If you have any questions or concerns please contact Mr. Yu at the school, 604-530-2151, or email at [email protected].

Poppy Car Show Sunday May 5

D.W. Poppy Secondary is getting ready to host its Annual Poppy Car Show on Sunday May 5th 2019 sponsored by Fox and Hound Pub. Our tradition of putting on one of the first car shows of the season brings many benefits for the school. We hope to see over 700 cars on display in our school back field, and welcome thousands of spectators. This is a family friendly all ages event. Spectators will enjoy an array of collector vehicles and motorcycles, vendors, concession, music, 50/50 draws, car show t-shirt sales, hats, vintage signs, raffle and silent auction and more. The event is our school’s biggest fundraiser and benefits our entire school including the shops and school technology, athletic teams, dry grad and many others. As a gentle reminder please no dogs as the show takes place on school grounds. The shop and tech Ed departments are able to purchase tools and technology that are used for the student’s projects and around the school – this year they are hoping to raise money towards the purchase of a laser cutter valued at $40,000. Our students volunteer at the show and learn the value of contributing to and being part of a community and the importance of giving back. Their volunteer time at the car show benefits them through increased program opportunities and enriches their academic experiences such as athletic trips, the school race car, Dry Grad celebration and more. You will find students helping out on the day of the show at the concession, the gates, parking cars, on the grounds and during setup/clean up. It is also an opportunity for the school to connect and network with the local community – this year we are again looking forward to welcoming the Fort Langley Lions Club who will be offering a pancake breakfast in the morning to our exhibitors and spectators from 7 am – 11 am. Our basketball teams will be running the concession from 11 am – 3 pm.

Early Bird Registration for cars is $10 plus service charge and will open on March 1st until May 2nd Thursday, and is available online thru https://www.brownpapertickets.com/event/4094225 or in person at the school office from 7:45-3:15 Monday- Friday through until Thursday May 2nd(note school office is closed May 3rd Friday) , with mail-in cut off April 26th.
