Victorian breeders will have access

to Europe’s Champion Sprinter

Blue Point (Shamardal) this year,

with Darley announcing that the

three-time Royal Ascot winner will stand his

first season in Australia at their Northwood

Park farm in Seymour.

Darley’s already-powerful roster has been

bolstered by yesterday’s announcement that Blue

Point would be joined by Europe’s Champion Two-

Year-Old and Champion Three-Year-Old Too Darn

Hot (Dubawi) and Australia’s Champion Two-Year-

Old Microphone (Exceed And Excel) in serving their

first southern hemisphere books in 2020.

Both Too Darn Hot and the recently-retired

Microphone will stand at Kelvinside in the

Hunter Valley.

The trio collectively are “as good as any

group of new stallions Darley has offered

in Australia,” according to Alastair Pulford,

Darley’s head of sales.

“To have horses of the calibre of Too Darn

Hot and Blue Point here is just unbelievable,”

Pulford told ANZ Bloodstock News yesterday.

“Just the fact they are by Dubawi and Shamardal,

who are the best two stallions that we’ve stood

in the northern hemisphere - certainly in the

UK and Ireland - is fantastic and obviously both

of those horses stood with distinction down

here as well. Continued on page 2>>

“They are different physicals - Blue

Point is his father’s son, as is Too Darn Hot actually,” Pulford laughed.

“Blue Point is a big, strapping, powerful, muscular horse. Too Darn Hot

is a much more elegant son of Dubawi out of a Singspiel mare, he’s a

beautiful mover while Blue Point is more of a sprinting brute.”

Blue Point, a three-quarter brother to Group 2 winner Formosina

(Footstepsinthesand), was purchased for 200,000gns by John Ferguson at

Book 1 of the 2015 Tattersalls October Yearling Sale.

Racing in the Godolphin blue for trainer Charlie Appleby, he was a

Group 2 winner as a juvenile, taking the Gimcrack Stakes (Gr 2, 6f) by a

widening three lengths. He was also twice Group 1-placed at two, in the

Middle Park Stakes (Gr 1, 6f) and the Dewhurst Stakes (Gr 1, 7f), while he

was again placed at the highest level at three in the Commonwealth Cup

(Gr 1, 6f) at his first Royal Ascot appearance.

It was as an older horse, though, that he stamped his sheer class. At

four, he won the King’s Stand Stakes (Gr 1, 5f) for the first time, while he

was unbeaten in five starts as a five-year-old, including three Group 1

wins: the Al Quoz Sprint (Gr 1, 1200m), the King’s Stand Stakes (Gr 1, 5f)

and the Diamond Jubilee Stakes (Gr 1, 6f).

The King’s Stand-Diamond Jubilee double, in the space of five days,

has only been completed one other time since Diadem (Orby) achieved

the feat 100 years ago (across a four day period); that was by the Australian

raider Choisir (Danehill Dancer) in 2003.

Retired days after Royal Ascot last year, he was the winner of 11 of his 20

starts. A four-time Group 1 winner, he earned £2,631,333 (approximately

AU$5.2 million).

He served his first mares this year at Darley’s Kildangan Stud in Kildare,

standing for a fee of €45,000. He will join a burgeoning Northwood Park

roster that includes Brazen Beau (I Am Invincible) and Street Boss (Street

Cry), as well as American star Frosted (Tapit).

“Victoria is an extremely important market for us and we’ve always

supported it extremely well with horses like Brazen Beau and Street Boss,”

Pulford said.

“When Brazen Beau went to stud, he was the number one pick of his

draft that year, not just in our draft but Australia-wide. New Approach was

the same. So we’ve always tried to support Victoria with a top-class horse

and this is no exception.

“We know that he will get huge

support here, the people who’ve seen him already really like him in the

northern hemisphere.”

Too Darn Hot arrives in Australia with a pedigree and a reputation to

uphold as the Champion Two-Year-Old and Champion Three-Year-Old of

his generation in Europe.

Bred and raced by the doyen of musical theatre Andrew Lloyd Webber

- styled as Lord Lloyd Webber under his Watership Down Stud banner -

Too Darn Hot is out of Lloyd Webber’s three-time Group 1 winner Dar Re

Mi (Singspiel).

Dar Re Mi is out of the top filly Darara (Top Ville), herself a Group

1 winner who produced top-level winners Rewilding (Tiger Hill), River

Dancer (Sadler’s Wells) and Darazari (Sadler’s Wells). Before Too Darn

Hot, Dar Re Mi had already produced Group 1 placegetters So Mi Dar

(Dubawi) and Lah Ti Dar (Dubawi).

As a two-year-old, the John Gosden-trained Too Darn Hot was

undefeated from four starts, winning the Dewhurst Stakes (Gr 1, 7f), the

Champagne Stakes (Gr 2, 7f) and the Solario Stakes (Gr 3, 7f), each by

definitive margins.

Too Darn Hot was initially on a Derby path at three, but after finishing

second in the Dante Stakes (1m 2f), he was dropped back to shorter trips.

Placings in the Irish 2,000 Guineas (Gr 1, 1m) behind Phoenix Of

Spain (Lope De Vega) and the St James’s Palace Stakes (Gr 1, 1m) behind

Circus Maximus (Galileo) primed him for the back half of his season, with

the colt ending his career with a pair of Group 1 wins in the Prix Jean Prat

(Gr 1, 1400m) and against the older horses in the Sussex Stakes (Gr 1, 1m).

All in all, he raced nine times for six wins, retiring as a three-time

Group 1 winner and earning £1,320,181 (approximately AU$2.6 million).

He stood his first northern hemisphere season at Darley’s Dalham Hall

Stud in Newmarket for £50,000.

“We have been so thrilled with the way European breeders and

industry professionals have supported Too Darn Hot that it makes this

Australian adventure all the more exciting,” Lord Lloyd Webber said.

“He has already taken us on an incredible journey and to now open

him up to a completely new market is beyond our wildest dreams. He is

in the best possible hands and we will certainly be asking Simon (Marsh,

racing and bloodstock manager for the Lloyd Webbers) to find some

wonderful mares with which to support him in Australia.”

Microphone, at this stage, is the sole Australian addition to the Darley

roster, having been retired after his last-start second in the Randwick

Guineas (Gr 1, 1600m).

He comes from one of the leading Woodlands families harking back

to the Ingham days. His dam Sung (Anabaa) won the Dark Jewel Classic

(Listed, 1400m) at Scone, while her dam Vocalist (Bluebird) won the

Black Opal Preview (Listed, 1200m) at Canberra and produced three-time

Group 1 winner Yell (Anabaa).

Others in the family are Group 1 winners Holler (Commands) and

Anthems (Palace Music), while Written Tycoon (Iglesia) features further

back.

Prepared by Godolphin Australia’s trainer James Cummings,

Microphone won the ATC Sires’ Produce Stakes (Gr 1, 1400m), the Skyline

Stakes (Gr 2, 1200m) and the Talindert Stakes (Listed, 1100m) among four

wins as a two-year-old.

He was also second in the Golden Slipper Stakes (Gr 1, 1200m) behind

stablemate Kiamichi (Sidestep), with his overall campaign earning him

Australia’s Champion Two-Year-Old crown.

At three, he raced five times for a win in the Autumn Stakes (Gr 2,

1400m) at Caulfield. He was also placed in the Randwick Guineas (Gr

1, 1600m), the Roman Consul Stakes (Gr 2, 1200m) and the Hobartville

Stakes (Gr 2, 1400m), racing against some of the best horses in what is

widely seen as one of the strongest crops in recent memory.

“He’s sure to be immensely popular,” Pulford said. “Being the

Champion Two-Year-Old in his crop is a significant achievement because

it is not just any crop; it is one of the strongest two-year-old crops going on

three-year-old crops that we’ve seen.

“He’s by the world’s best sire of two-year-olds, there are Stakes winners

right through his maternal family and he’s a very good-looking horse in

the mould of his father.”

Stallion fees for Darley’s roster, including the three new additions, will

be released later this month.

In addition to previously named high-

profile lots like multiple Group 1-winning sprinter In Her Time (Time Thief),

Australian Oaks (Gr 1, 2400m) victor Unforgotten (Fastnet Rock), Oakleigh

Plate (Gr 1, 1100m) winner Booker (Written Tycoon) and Group 2 winner

Noire (Foxwedge), Inglis yesterday announced that Cleanup (Dehere),

the dam of last weekend’s Doncaster Mile (Gr 1, 1600m) winner Nettoyer

(Sebring), would be among the breeding prospects available at this year’s

Chairman’s Sale; she is in foal to The Autumn Sun (Redoute’s Choice).

Group 2 winners Samara Dancer (Hinchinbrook), in foal to Trapeze Artist

(Snitzel); Sword Of Light (New Approach), in foal to Fastnet Rock (Danehill)

and Longport (Casino Prince), in foal to Dundeel (High Chaparral), were

also among the listed lots, while recently retired dual Group 3 winner Meryl

(Epaulette) was another to catch the eye when the catalogue for the May 8

sale was released yesterday, only 24 hours after the Inglis Australian Easter

Yearling Sale wrapped up for 2020.

Also of note are two mares each in foal to UK-based stallions Frankel

(Galileo), Kingman (Invincible Spirit) and Lope De Vega (Shamardal), while

mares in foal to many of Australia’s leading stallions are also represented.

Sebastian Hutch, Inglis’ General Manager, Bloodstock Sales & Marketing,

said that the Chairman’s Sale has been a high priority for Inglis this year.

“We ran what we felt was a very good sale in 2019 and we felt on the

back of that it gave us the platform to build on it into 2020,” Hutch told ANZ

Bloodstock News last night. “We’ve been working on the 2020 renewal of the

sale since the fall of the hammer for the last lot in 2019, so we’ve had it high

on our list of priorities to try and put together a really exceptional fillies’ and

broodmare catalogue.

“Irrespective of the circumstances, it’s come together tremendously well.

We set out with a number of key objectives and we’ve satisfied all of those. We

hope that the buying bench is excited about it as we are.

Inglis is coming off the Australian Easter Yearling Sale this week, which

took the same “virtual auction” format that will be applied to the Chairman’s

Sale, and Hutch said that the Easter Sale had demonstrated that a market can

still be created for elite stock, no matter the circumstances.

“I think a significant part of the reason that we are so grateful to our

vendors for showing the patience and support they did leading into the

Easter Sale and then during it, was that it has given us the opportunity to

demonstrate that we could make a major commercial sale of thoroughbreds

work in that format,” he said.

“I think even the most optimistic amongst us were pleasantly surprised

by how well the sale went. I’m not saying it was a perfect market, it was far

from that, but under the circumstances, it was positive.

“There was plenty of liquidity in the market, it was healthy in many

respects and, looking ahead to Chairman’s, it gives people confidence that

the demand for quality stock hasn’t been suppressed by what’s gone on

around the world in the last two or three months.

“There will be challenges ahead and challenges for the Chairman’s Sale,

but I think it’s a great opportunity for vendors to put their stock into a viable

market. Similarly, for investors, it’s a wonderful opportunity to try and acquire

elite breeding stock in an era when it is exceptionally difficult to do so.

“Those good mares are really hard to buy and we’ve put together a catalogue

that brings together plenty of nice mares that anybody would want to own.”

Hutch said that the difficulty with putting together a catalogue for a select

auction such as the Chairman’s Sale is that elite breeding prospects are such

a valuable commodity.

“I think it is the simple fact that people with quality breeding stock or

breeding prospects, they don’t want to sell,” he said. “You only have to look at

how sought after well-bred fillies were during the Easter sale this week to see

how hard it is to acquire them.

“You go through the Chairman’s catalogue and some of the best pedigrees

in the world are represented in it.

“We set out with a specific objective to try and ensure that there were

some really high-class race fillies in the catalogue: mares like In Her Time,

Unforgotten, Booker, Noire, Meryl, these are the types of fillies that people are

desperate to get to breed from.

“Then to be able to supplement them with mares in foal to the likes of

Lope De Vega, Kingman, Frankel, some really wonderful international

stallions, as well as some of the leading domestic stallions like I Am Invincible,

Zoustar, Not A Single Doubt, Dundeel and so on, it does look like a book that -

even though it’s small - it satisfies the requirements of any major commercial

breeder in Australia or any aspiring commercial breeder in Australia.

“Even for those looking to supplement international breeding operations,

I think there are mares here that are good enough to be mated to any of the

best stallions in the world.”

One of those mares is Youngstar, the 2019 Queensland Oaks winner,

who retires to the breeding barn as a Group 1 winner and a million-dollar

earner.

Purchased by Olly Koolman and his

father Anton at the 2016 Inglis Premier Yearling Sale for $200,000, Youngstar’s

pedigree has been enhanced since by the performance of her younger half-

sister Funstar (Adelaide), while her three-quarter sister Baggy Green (Galileo)

has produced the Group 1-placed Tofane (Ocean Park).

“We got a great deal of satisfaction from her racing career but we’re a racing

partnership, not a breeding partnership and the plan all along was to enjoy her

racing career and sell her as a broodmare, and that time has come,” Koolman

said. “She’s going to be a very commercial proposition to the lucky buyer.”

“The genetics are there with her, the family is obviously getting

continued upgrades through her little sister Funstar and she’s by a

fantastic stallion in High Chaparral who is already recognised as a

fantastic broodmare sire – a large number of yearlings at the Easter Sale

this week were out of High Chaparral mares.

“It’s a very commercial pedigree and it’s come a long way since we

purchased her.’’

Hutch added: “The sale-topper in 2019, Maastricht, came in as a wildcard.

It’s a very important part of putting together any breeding stock catalogue,

trying to pick up the mares that are current.

“We set out with the objective of trying to secure some quality wildcards and

to have Youngstar join the catalogue as a wildcard is fantastic. She was a high-

class race mare. It’s very hard to breed a Group 1 winner and she’s out of a mare

who has managed to produce two of them in a very short space of time.

“You look at the credentials a mare like that can bring to a breeding barn;

she’s very compatible with a significant number of the really sexy stallions in

Australia.

“Somebody’s going to have a lot of fun breeding from her and someone’s

going to really enjoy watching the pedigree just grow and grow.

“Between Youngstar and Funstar, you have two of the most valuable

fillies in the country so to be able to offer Youngstar at a sale again is a great

opportunity for us.”

Happy Clapper ready for fifth Queen Elizabeth attempt

Happy Clapper (Teofilo) will line up in his

fifth Queen Elizabeth Stakes (Gr 1, 2000m) at

Randwick tomorrow and for the first time in four

years, he won’t have to face Winx (Street Cry). In

spite of this, trainer Pat Webster can’t decide if

that make’s Saturday’s race harder or easier for his

ten-year-old as the wondermare often scared off

potential rivals. A field of 13 has been declared for

the race, with 8 of those winners at Group 1 level.

The field also includes the international runners

Addeybb (Pivotal) and Danon Premium (Deep

Impact). The popular Happy Clapper is said to

be “in a good place” in the lead up to the race,

according to Webster, who will be forced to watch

the race from home due to government advice.

Belle inspired by Winx’s longevityThe Winx story continues to provide inspiration

to the connections of Melody Belle (Commands),

as it is confirmed the 10-time Group 1 winner will

race on into her six-year-old season. David Ellis,

principal for Te Akau Racing, said that Winx proved

that mares can improve as they age, and Melody

Belle has already shown her ability to improve with

each campaign. “Winx showed that mares can get

better and better as they go on and Melody Belle has

improved at each campaign and we think can do so

again next season," Ellis told Racing.com. Melody

Belle will have her 30th career start tomorrow in the

Queen Elizabeth Stakes to complete her five-year-

old season, where she bids for her 11th Group 1 win.

Similarly, Winx ended her five-year-old season with

a win in the race, which was her 27th career start and

11th top-flight victory.

Alizee’s final chance to be QueenThe triple Group 1-winning mare Alizee (Sepoy)

will attempt to turn back the clock when she

makes her final start in the Coolmore Legacy

Stakes (Gr 1, 1600m) tomorrow. She will be

reunited with jockey Glyn Schofield, who hasn’t

ridden her since winning the Legacy Stakes two

years ago. She will have to overcome the second-

widest barrier in the 17-horse field. “She is a

remarkable mare,” said trainer James Cummings.

“I feel privileged every time I put a saddle on

her big, broad back. If her career hadn’t been

interrupted by a setback in the spring of 2018, who

knows what her record would look like.” Along

with the wide barrier, Alizee has to also contend

with a competitive field, which includes the star

three-year-old filly Funstar (Adelaide).

Probabeel to fly New Zealand flag in OaksJames Richards will be hoping his late decision to

extend Probabeel’s (Savabeel) preparation pays

off when the filly lines up in the Australian Oaks

(Gr 1, 2400m). The filly is one of the leading fancies

of the race, behind only the Godolphin-trained

Colette (Hallowed Crown) at the head of the market.

Despite being untested at the distance, Probabeel is

stoutly bred with her sire being a successful source

of stayers. The New Zealand racing scene is well-

known for breeding classy stayers and Richards says

it is no surprise that the country has yielded plenty of

success in Australian classics. “They’ve always been

kind to us and they are nice races to target because

obviously our horses can stay a bit,” Richards said.

“It’s nice to be targeting a race we have had success

in in the past as a nation.”

Sargent hoping for an Oaks upset

John Sargent is hoping for an upset when he saddles

the outsiders Stick ‘Em Up (Dundeel) and Aspect

Ratio (Declaration Of War) in Saturday’s Australian

Oaks. The form suggests that the tightly knit trio at

the top of the market: Colette, Probabeel and Shout

The Bar (Not A Single Doubt), will fight out the

finish, but Sargent believes these races can often

throw up some surprise results. The trainer, who has

won four Group 1 Oaks races, pointed out last week’s

ATC Derby (Gr 1, 2400m) result, where the Rosehill

Guineas (Gr 1, 2000m) winner Castelvecchio

(Dundeel) didn’t cope with the rise in trip. “There

is often a big difference between 2000 metres and

2400 metres, especially when they go to that trip for

the first time," he told Racing.com yesterday. "Some

of those fillies were too good over the shorter trip

for my fillies but the distance rise gives my two the

chance to get at those class fillies.”

Sydney Cup the One for Kiwi stayerNew Zealand-based trainers Murray Baker

and Andrew Forsman are searching for

more Australian riches when The Chosen

One (Savabeel) lines up in the Sydney Cup

(Gr 1, 3200m). The pair already experienced

Australian success when Quick Thinker (So

You Think) won the Australian Derby (Gr 1,

2400m) last Saturday, a week after winning

the Tulloch Stakes (Gr 2, 2000m). Kerrin

McEvoy is booked to ride the four-year-old,

who will carry 53.5 kilograms, and Forsman

is hoping he will thrive for the weight relief. "I

have always thought all prep that this was his

race," Forsman told Racing.com. "He has been

up in the weights his last couple of runs and

drops to a competitive weight on Saturday. At

first glance, outside of Young Rascal there is

no one you would be really scared of like in

the Melbourne Cup. He finished back in the

field in the Cup, but it was still a good run."

Eustace confident about Sydney Cup chancesCiaron Maher and David Eustace head

into tomorrow’s Sydney Cup with New

Zealand Cup (Gr 1, 3200m) runners Azuro

(Myboycharlie) and Etah James (Raise The

Flag) as well as 2018 Sandown Cup (Listed,

3200m) winner Yogi (Raise The Flag). "It was

a good run, he just got too far back," Eustace

said of Azuro’s New Zealand Cup run. "He

drew wide and we wanted to punch forward

but we just couldn't get into a more forward

spot. It was disappointing but it just didn't

really pan out. But we're confident he'll take

a bit of beating." On Etah James, who joined

the stable after her New Zealand Cup run,

Eustace said: "She's been training well and

she trialled up nicely. She came to us pretty

fit and right to go. We're grateful to have her

in our care for a short time and hopefully she

runs well. I'm hopeful she will."

Thriving filly ready for SykesMeanwhile, the Maher and Eustace camp’s

Golden Slipper Stakes (Gr 1, 1200m) runner-

up Away Game (Snitzel) will tackle the Percy

Sykes Stakes (Gr 2, 1200m) and Maher is bullish

about her chances. "Away Game, it doesn't

really matter what field you put her up against,

she seems to be evergreen," Maher told Racing.

com. "She has just thrived. Really done well.

Her runs have been really well spaced, she is in

great condition, she really holds her condition

well. Her work has been fine. They (Away Game

and fellow Percy Sykes runner Muntaseera)

worked together on Tuesday and I'd say she will

run right up to her form again. By the looks of it

she will be right in the race."

Davies hopes to slip Through The CracksSmall-time trainer Angela Davies purchased

Through The Cracks (Wanted) for $7,500 at

the Scone sales and tomorrow the five-year-

old will be vying for the $400,000 Provincial

Championships (1400m). "I've only been a

very small trainer most of my career and I

have always backed myself with all the horses

I have bought," Davies said. "Nowadays it

doesn't happen much any more where you can

find one. That's why I called him Through The

Cracks. He slipped through the cracks. I always

think we were going to have the right timing. As

it turned out, we did have. You never know in

this game what can happen."

Price, Kent to step out Tavistock duoMick Price and Michael Kent Jr are looking

forward to lining up Tavistock (Montjeu) duo

Tavisan and Contrition on Saturday. Tavisan

will tackle the Furphy Stakes (Listed, 1000m) at

Morphettville Park in Adelaide, while Contrition

will contest the Australian Oaks (Gr 1, 2400m)

at Randwick in Sydney. It will be Tavisan’s first-

up assignment this preparation and his trainers

are pleased with his progression in the lead-up

to the weekend. “Tavisan is fantastic,” Kent said.

“He had a really good preparation. He is really

fresh and well and he has done enough work to

be competitive in a race that should suit him.”

On Contrition, Kent said: “She has particularly

thrived up there (in Sydney). We are reasonably

optimistic, but understand that there are a few

fillies there that are better performed than her.

We think she will stay and she has certainly

done very well up in Sydney.”

Runson returns to Caulfield 1400m in CupDrawing the widest barrier is not ideal, but

co-trainer Troy Corstens says that should not

stop his gelding Runson (Delzao) running in

the Anniversary Cup (Gr 3, 1400m) at Caulfield

on Saturday. Although Runson is a two-time

winner over 1400 metres, it will be his first time

at the trip in nearly two years. “He showed

he was good at the trip previously and I can’t

see any reason why he won’t be again,” said

Corstens. “Barrier 17 is a bit annoying, but we’ll

work it out. There’s a few horses that get back,

so he’ll work forward I would say and lead.”

Baccarat Baby ready for returnReturning for her first run since the Melbourne

Spring Carnival, plans for David Vandyke’s

Baccarat Baby (Casino Prince) have been thrown

up in the air with the cancellation of the Brisbane

Winter Carnival. "I suppose we are all dressed up

with nowhere to go at the moment," Vandyke said.

"But I want to make it clear I am not whingeing.

There are a lot of people out of work and I still

have a job. The thing is we are racing and we have

to ensure that continues." After one lead-up trial,

the four-year-old mare will make her return in

tomorrow's Racecourse Village Open Handicap

(1200m) at Doomben. "The trial was just OK.

But after Saturday we will see where she is at and

build a campaign after that," Vandyke said. "She

has won twice first-up so she is usually a good

first-up horse."

Think Big Stud pair avoid Doomben clashThe Think Big Stud-owned three-year-old

stablemates Profit (Dundeel) and Ballistic Boy

(Smart Missile) will avoid a clash after trainer

Chris Anderson made a close study of the fields

at Doomben. Profit and Ballistic Boy were both

accepted for the Three-Year-Old Handicap

(1350m) and Profit is in the TAB Class Six Plate

(1350m). "They are both looking for longer races

on a bigger track but I am not complaining

because we are still racing," Anderson said.

"Saturday's races are both 1350 metres and in the

end Profit is better off under the Class Six Plate

weights. He can run there and Ballistic Boy can

take on the three-year-olds. "I had a good look at

both fields and this is the right way to go."

Stampe sticks to three-year-old company at DoombenAnother bad barrier draw will keep three-

year-old Stampe (Whittington) to a race

against his own age at Doomben tomorrow.

Trainer Chris Munce accepted with Stampe

in the TAB Class 6 Plate (1350m) and the

Three-Year-Old Hcp (1350m). "Of course he

drew barrier ten in both races. I was leaning

to running in the three-year-old anyway so he

might as well go there," Munce said. Stampe

has recorded a win and three minor placings

at his past four starts against the best of the

current three-year-olds. "He has had big

weights and terrible barrier draws. At his past

four starts he has not once started from inside

barrier seven," Munce said. "And he has been

getting big weights including 60 kilograms

when he was third at Doomben last time. I

suppose in summary he is a pretty good horse

who deserves another win."

All Aged next for Bivouac

James Cummings has announced that his dual

Group 1 winner Bivouac (Exceed And Excel)

will head to next week’s All Aged Stakes (Gr 1,

1400m) at Randwick. Champion rider Hugh

Bowman has been booked for the ride on the

star colt after partnering him to sixth in last

Saturday’s T J Smith Stakes (Gr 1, 1200m).

Bivouac is currently rated a $6 chance with the

TAB for next week’s autumn feature.

Group 1 stars impress in trialsHigh quality trials were staged on Thursday at

Morphettville Parks. They included the Group

1 winners Sunlight (Zoustar) and Gytrash

(Lope De Vega), who each won their respective

1000-metre heats. Sunlight was given a stronger

hit-out to run the fastest time of the morning,

clocking 58.81 seconds to defeat Kemalpasa

(Magnus) and Roccabascerana (Fighting Sun).

“We needed to give her a solid trial,” Tony

McEvoy told Racing.com. “As good as her

record is with 11 wins from 21 starts, she always

finds it hard to win first-up.” Richard Jolly was

pleased with the performance of the runner-

up Kemalpasa. “We go to the Irwin Saturday

week in a really good frame of mind," Jolly told

Racing.com. "Jake (Toeroek, jockey) said he

felt terrific and loved how when he gave him

a squeeze at the 200, he made a real dash at

Sunlight.”

Camelot bolts in at PakenhamAfter being scratched at the barriers at Caulfield

last Saturday, Danny O’Brien’s South Australian

Derby (Gr 1, 2500m) contender Russian

Camelot (Camelot) bolted in by seven lengths

in a Benchmark 64 (1600m) at Pakenham last

night. “There was a bit of pressure on after

Saturday went pear shaped. I’m very pleased

tonight, the barrier guys did a great job and the

horse was nice and relaxed today,” O’Brien told

Racing.com. “It was nice to see the throttle out

there the last furlong and a half and to show

everyone the ability that he has got. He has just

shown enormous talent from day one. We’ve

seen some things from him at home that a

genuine Group 1 horse does. Damien is pretty

keen to ride him over there (in Adelaide). He is

even talking about quarantining over there for

a couple of weeks. He’s very excited about the

horse too.”

Phoenix to continue Australian presenceFollowing the success of Golden Slipper Stakes

(Gr 1, 1200m) hero Farnan (Not A Single

Doubt) and dual Group 1 winner Loving

Gaby (I Am Invincible) this autumn, Phoenix

Thoroughbreds is continuing to expand its

Australian operation. Phoenix has added

seven yearlings from both the Inglis Australian

Easter Yearling Sale and also the withdrawn

Arrowfield draft to its ledger, with three heading

to Gai Waterhouse and Adrian Bott, two to

Ciaron Maher and David Eustace and two to

Mick Price and Michael Kent Jr. They have also

retained a greater number of homebreds than

in recent years. “We have bred some really

lovely looking types which are showing plenty

of promise,” said Phoenix Thoroughbreds CEO

Amer Abdulaziz. “Most of these have excellent

Australian pedigrees and they are the types of

horses we’d be interested in buying anyway, so

with the current global situation in mind, we

feel our best option is to race them.”

Bosson inquiry concludesThe stewards’ enquiry into Opie Bosson’s

losing ride aboard Te Akau Shark (Rip Van

Winkle) in the George Ryder Stakes (Gr

1, 1500m) has been concluded with the

New Zealand jockey escaping sanction.

The gelding finished third in the race after

sitting wide with no cover and Racing NSW

stewards believed the jockey made an error

of judgement in not securing a position to

the outside of Brandenburg (Burgundy) in

the early stages of the race. Bosson justified

the wide path plotted by Te Akau Shark as he

believed the inside section of the track was

inferior and that he wished to follow The

Bostonian (Jimmy Choux) into the race with

clear running in the straight.

Macdonald-Gluyas name Chau replacementsWith Jerry Chau departing home to Hong

Kong, Leon Macdonald and Andrew Gluyas

have quickly moved to replace the star

apprentice by securing two new recruits.

Teegan Voorham, who recently achieved a

100th career win aboard the Macdonald-

Gluyas trained Diamond Tycoon (Written

Tycoon), has had her indentures transferred

across from Jon O’Connor. "It was actually

Jon's idea," Voorham told Racing.com. "He felt

he just didn't have enough horses in work to

be able to provide me with the opportunities

I need.” Macdonald has also agreed to have

Tasmania-based apprentice Scarlet So join

the team from Tuesday. "Scarlet is another of

the apprentices sent to Australia by the Hong

Kong Jockey Club," Macdonald said. "She has

been with the Wells team in Tasmania, who

I have a long-standing friendship with. With

the interruption to racing there, it is a chance

for her to come here and continue her career.”

Ipswich to return with Easter Monday meetingIpswich will host a nine-race card at its first

meeting in five months on Monday following

a major track upgrade. The track was closed

for the work after the meeting on October 30

but off-course reconstruction of facilities had

been undertaken for nearly a year previously.

About $24 million will eventually be spent on

the club's track and facilities and there has

been major work on the drainage system and

racetrack surface. ITC chairman Wayne Patch

said in his many years associated with the club

he had never seen the track look better. "It has

a terrific cover of grass and things are on the up

for the club," Patch said.

Return to Seymour delayedA return to racing at Seymour has been delayed

until mid-May with Racing Victoria and the

Seymour Racing Club electing to transfer

two upcoming meetings. The track must hold

jumpouts with a minimum number of senior

riders present before racing can return but with

the industry focused on biosecurity protocols

amid the coronavirus crisis, officials have

delayed the return by at least a month. Ballarat

will host the Seymour meeting scheduled for

Tuesday, April 21 while the Monday, May 4

meeting will be at Echuca.

Drop in trip key to Beauty LegacyBeauty Legacy’s (Fiorente) bad racing

manners cost him any chance of Classic glory

earlier this term but Joao Moreira is hoping a

drop in trip might prove to be the key for the

talented gelding’s fierce attitude. “In his two

previous starts I had to fight him quite a bit to

try and hold his temper, he was just fighting

me badly and I couldn’t let him go because

I had horses around me,” Moreira said of the

John Size-trained galloper. “There’s no doubt

he was not able to produce his best his last

two starts because of his temper. He was

really wanting to over-race with me and he

was using every bit of energy he’s got fighting

me down the back straight, and, turning for

home, he’d already tired as he’d used all of his

energy doing that.” The four-year-old runs in

the Class 2 Austin Handicap (1400m) at Sha

MAIDEN OF THE WEEK

Battleground (Snitzel) was justifiably

considered one of the best maidens

going around before he finally lost

that tag on Tuesday.

Second three times from his first three starts,

including in the Gosford Guineas (Listed, 1200m)

behind Hightail (Written Tycoon), Battleground

finally put it all together when scoring at Kembla

Grange.

Lining up over 1200 metres, Battleground was

sent out as the long odds-on favourite for Peter

and Paul Snowden. Ridden by Adrian Layt in the

green and gold colours of James Harron, he began

well, settling outside the leader before racing

away on the corner.

By the 200 metres, it was all over as he drew right

away, defeating the Clare Cunningham-trained

Blueant (Smart Missile) by four and a quarter

lengths with Bluff ‘n’ Bluster (The Brothers War) for

Jason Coyle a further half-length away in third.

Whether it was the benefit of race experience,

the removal of blinkers, the heavy track or simply the

fact that he was far superior to his rivals, Battleground

shapes as a horse to follow going forward.

By Snitzel (Redoute’s Choice) out of the unraced

War Emblem (Our Emblem) mare Madame Andree,

Battleground is her third foal and was purchased for

$900,000 at the Magic Millions Gold Coast Yearling

Sale from the Arrowfield draft.

Madame Andree’s first foal, Madame Pauline

(Redoute’s Choice), is a two-time winner and has

been city placed, while her second foal Nancy

Grace (Redoute’s Choice) retired unraced.

Battleground has a younger three-quarter

brother, Anders (Not A Single Doubt), who

finished fourth on debut behind subsequent

Reisling Stakes (Gr 2, 1200m) quinella See

You Soon (Siyouni) and Dame Giselle (I Am

Invincible) and looks set for a racetrack return

shortly for Ciaron Maher and David Eustace.

Her yearling foal, by Shalaa (Invincible

Spirit), reached $360,000 to the bid of George

Moore Bloodstock on behalf of his uncle Gary at

this year’s Magic Millions Gold Coast Yearling

Last season, she was served by Pariah

ON THE WATCH

BY KEN BOMAN | @ANZ_NEWS

After James McDonald rated Nature

Strip (Nicconi) through a steady

first 200 metres, the outstanding

sprinter then clocked brilliant

sectional times that would have tested any

opposition in taking out Saturday’s T J Smith

Stakes (Gr 1, 1200m) at Randwick.

Following some challenging moments, the

leading combination of trainer Chris Waller

and jockey James McDonald have hit upon a

formula to bring out the best in Nature Strip

and this fourth Group 1 victory was a perfect

example.

Generally considered the fastest horse in

the country, Nature Strip’s brilliance has proved

hard to harness, with the gelding often going

too fast too soon.

The speed machine now seems to have

adapted a fresh approach and as long as

McDonald can get him to relax through the

earliest part of the race, Nature Strip can then

produce mid-race fractions that have his

opposition struggling to keep in touch.

After beginning well from his inside barrier

(1) on Saturday, McDonald took his time before

a now seemingly obedient Nature Strip drove

through to retain the lead after clocking a

moderate 13.30 for the first 200 metres.

He then ran along at a quick tempo from the

1000 metres, held a clear advantage on turning

for home and he was not seriously threatened

from that point on, scoring comfortably by two

lengths in 1:11.18 for the 1200-metre journey.

But the feature of the performance was his

sectionals from the 1000 metre point: 10.58,

11.12 (400m in 21.62), 11.60 (600m in 33.22) and

11.74 to give him an 800-metre fraction of 44.96

(from the 1000m to the 200m) – exceptional on

the Heavy 8 track.

Nature Strip defeated a field that included

seven Group 1 winners with Santa Ana Lane

(Lope De Vega) second, Redzel (Snitzel) third

and Pierata (Pierro) fourth – some of the best

sprinters in Australia.

In the Doncaster Mile (Gr 1, 1600m), a

strong early pace played into the hands of the

backmarkers with the $41 winner Nettoyer

(Sebring) coming from last in the 20-runner

field to claim victory, her first at Group 1 level.

The pace was set by Quackerjack (Not

A Single Doubt) who led after some early

pressure that saw the first 1000 metres run in

60.51 (12.10 200m rate), whilst the latter 600

metres by comparison was a moderate 37.14

(12.38 200m rate).

In addition, the mid-race pace was quite

hectic (from the 1400m to the 400m) which

resulted in that 1000-metre section clocking

59.65 - those factors telling on runners closest

to the pace, for example the leader Quackerjack

who finished 18th.

The runner-up Star Of The Seas (Ocean

Park) came from back in 16th place and the

third-placed Brandenburg (Burgundy) made

ground from eighth.

An examination of the pace in the Doncaster

Mile also added merit to the performance of

the favourite Melody Belle (Commands), who

endured a wide trip under her equal top-weight of

57 kilograms before finishing (1.4 lengths) fourth.

Clocked from the 1400 metres, Melody

Belle ran 22.96 (400m), 35.08 (600m), 47.35

(800m) and 59.72 for her 1000 metres (from

the 1400m to the 400m).

In coming from last the winner Nettoyer

produced the best closing sectionals of the

race with her last 1000 metres in 60.05, last

800 metres in 47.92, last 600 metres in 35.75

with her final 400 metres in 23.66 – smart

times on a Heavy 8 track, conditions she

relishes.

The Inglis Sires (registered as ATC Sires’

Produce Stakes) (Gr 1, 1400m) for two-year-

olds saw the Peter and Paul Snowden-trained

colt King’s Legacy (Redoute’s Choice)

produce a career-best performance in

finishing on from last to score the win.

He was suited by a strong tempo set by the

leaders and a patient ride by Hugh Bowman

paid dividends with the colt’s stamina coming

to the fore by overhauling Prague (Redoute’s

Choice) to win by a half-length in a time of

1:26.46 on the Heavy 8 track.

That overall time, granted, is not eye-

catching, but a review of the sectional times

revealed that the leaders clocked a swift 1000

metres (from the 1200m to the 200m) in 59.83

- the final 200 metres slowing to 13.25.

King’s Legacy looks suited to further still

while the times suggest that Prague staged

a very good effort as he was forced to work

from the outside barrier (12) and then travel

outside the leader clocking a mid-race 1000

metres in 59.75 before failing by only a half-

length.

Earlier in the day, the Team Hawkes-

trained colt Doubtland (Not A Single Doubt)

impressed on the watch in taking out the

Kindergarten Stakes (Gr 3, 1100m) to remain

unbeaten after two starts.

After settling back in sixth place, a strong

pace brought out the best in Doubtland and

he stamped his potential by racing away over

the closing stages to win by four lengths in a

time of 1:05.90 (11.98 200m rate), equivalent

to 1:11.89 for 1200 metres.

A fast mid-race pace saw the leaders clock

22.53 (400m), 34.12 (600m) for a fast 45.79 for

the 800 metres (from the 1000m to the 200m)

on the Heavy 8 track.

In winning, Doubtland returned

impressive closing sectionals in the

conditions with his last 1000 metres in 57.44,

last 800 metres in 46.07, last 600 metres in

34.67 with his final 400 metres in 23.28.

This Is Class (So You Think) had

to do it the hard way but the

progressive sprinter had enough

quality to maintain an upward

curve with victory in a smoking Class 2 Hing

Man Handicap (1000m) at Happy Valley on

Wednesday night.

Francis Lui’s galloper overcame a wide

draw, a three-deep passage and 11 smart

rivals to seal a fifth career win at his 11th start.

The five-year-old quickened to the lead 200

metres out and fought hard to repel the late

challengers, Loving A Boom (Acclamation) and

Hong Kong Bet (Smart Missile), by a neck and

a short-head.

“It was a bit tougher than normal because

we had barrier ten and that’s not easy but luckily

the pace wasn’t too fast in front,” Ho said.

“When he travelled, I just let him breathe

and save as much energy as possible until the

last bit.”

Lui had not been confident beforehand

that This Is Class would be able to cope with

the early speed for his first start at 1000 metres

since January last year, having snared all four of

his previous wins at 1200 metres.

“I thought he’d handle the 1000 metres but

I didn’t expect him to be that fast, especially as

he was drawn 10,” the handler said. “The main

dangers, I thought, were all on the inside, I

expected them to be faster so I wasn’t confident

– I thought maybe he was a place chance.”

Ho was astute enough to tap into the

gelding’s 1200-metre strength through what

turned out to be a tough run.

“He can be on-pace all the time and he’s

been running 1200 (metres) so back to 1000

(metres) he had enough in the tank, so even if

we used a little bit more than normal I felt he

would still finish off,” Ho said.

“It's a good effort from him, he did very

well so hopefully he pulls up well and keeps his

form.”

This Is Class has now won five and been

second twice from his seven starts at Happy

Valley and Lui is keen to continue at the

downtown venue.

“At the moment I’ll keep him here at Happy

Valley but it depends on the programme – he’s

shown he can win races here but if there’s no

suitable race I’ll have to put him back to Sha

Tin,” he said.

The gelding suffered a tendon injury after

his second win, last May, but has done nothing

but improve since his return to action in

January.

“He had a leg problem and I had to rest him

for a long time but luckily he’s recovered. I think

the way he won today shows that he still can

improve further,” Lui added.

The John Moore-trained race favourite

Stronger (Not A Single Doubt) endured a rough

passage and was unable to find clear running at

a key juncture in the straight. The $2.30 chance

finished seventh.

Simply done

Douglas Whyte bagged the 29th win of his

rookie season as a trainer when Simply Fluke

(Keeper) broke his maiden at the tenth attempt

in section two of the Class 4 Wan Tsui Handicap

(1200m). It was the five-year-old’s first start for

the handler following a stable transfer from

Dennis Yip.

Shadow Breaker HKJC

Joao Moreira overcame the widest gate,

found the perfect midfield sit and then urged

the $2.40 favourite to a neck success over Travel

Datuk (Holy Roman Emperor) who remained

winless, and, for the eighth time in his 39-race

Hong Kong career, had to settle for second.

“When the barrier draw came out and

Simply Fluke drew gate 12 again that was a

concern, especially as he hadn’t had the best of

luck in a couple of his runs,” Whyte said.

“I must say that the horse has really

settled down – he’s been a bit of a handful but

he’s settled down mentally and I was pretty

confident with the work he’s been showing at

home that he could reproduce that and he did.

“I think there’s still improvement in him,”

the former 13-time champion jockey continued.

“What he did today, I’ve learned more about him

and I think I can assess him better. My belief is

that after a run like that he’s going to enjoy and

appreciate his morning training even more now

because when a horse can win a race they gain

confidence and he’s done it in a nice manner.”

Schofield at the doubleChad Schofield completed an accomplished

double to maintain the good recent form that

has seen him hit the mark at each of the last five

race meetings.

And, for the second Wednesday night in a row,

the jockey produced a peach of a front-running

ride. This time he rolled the Jimmy Ting-trained

Shadow Breaker (Excelebration) to secure the

lead in the Class 4 Yue Wan Handicap (1800m),

set ideal fractions and maintained a strong gallop

to the line to ensure the four-year-old a first win at

the eighth attempt.

“He’s a horse that always works well but

he’s only had a couple of runs for Jimmy and

his racing had been quite disappointing in

comparison to his work,” Schofield said.

“Tonight we planned to be midfield with

cover but he jumped really well – he was quite

positive and eager to get on with it from the gate

so I let him stride. I didn’t really back it off the

whole way round, it was a strong gallop and to

the horse’s credit he kept running.”

Schofield was on the mark again in race

six, the Class 3 Hing Wah Handicap (1000m),

thanks to the John Moore-trained Larson

(Better Than Ready). The three-year-old broke

his Hong Kong duck at the eighth attempt,

having won two from two in Australia.

“It was a very good win – I only picked the ride

up on Monday – but he came here an extremely fit

horse and he was a pleasure to ride. He pinged the

lids and once he got outside the leader he spat the

bit out, relaxed, and when I pressed the button he

went again,” Schofield said.

Ricky Yiu went to 47 wins at the top of

the trainers’ premiership – one ahead of Lui

– thanks to the determined run of Focus (Per

Incanto) in the Class 4 Yiu Tung Handicap

(1650m). Karis Teetan drove the four-year-old

to hold the late thrust of runner-up Electric

Lightning (Not A Single Doubt).

Blake Shinn ended five weeks without a

win as he unleashed the David Ferraris-trained

Bear Again (Var) on a powerful run to earn

a length and a quarter success in the Oi Tung

Handicap (1650m).

Good Shot (Swiss Ace) at odds of 45/1 surged

late to run down the $2.40 favourite Super Alliances

(Zacinto) in section one of the Class 4 Wan Tsui

Handicap (1200m). The David Hall-trained five-

year-old suffered a stress fracture to a cannon bone

a year ago but opened his account under Matthew

Chadwick at his second career start.

Champion jockey Zac Purton was on the

mark aboard the Danny Shum-trained Young

Legend (Exceed And Excel) in the Class 3 Hong

Tung Handicap (1200m).
