New House Names Announced

Following a suggestion by the School Council to modernise and reinvigorate the House system at Teddington School, it was decided to choose new names that would have meaning to the students. The Senior prefects were inundated with themes and suggestions following the announcement. After much thought it was decided to choose names from people who have changed the world and positively affected others. This ties in perfectly with the four selected people and during the assemblies this week the Prefects have explained to all students how these individuals have represented the core values of Teddington School. All students were given the opportunity to vote on the new names. Stuart will now become Farah, after Sir Mo Farah; Tudor will become Pankhurst after Emmeline Pankhurst; Windsor will become Parks after Rosa Parks; and York will become Picasso after Pablo Picasso Please note that although the house names have changed the current tutor group initials will remain the same for the time being! Staff will find out next week which house they have been assigned so that at future inter house events they can fully support the students.

Ofsted Inspection at Teddington School

A very big thank you to all the students and families that have been so supportive during the Ofsted inspection this week. We will be able to publish the results of the report in approximately three weeks. As always, these visits are unpredictable and the staff and students pulled together as a real community and demonstrated great integrity. I am very proud of all of them. Kathy Pacey Head of School

Parent Survey 2018

Every academic year we conduct surveys amongst parents to find out your views on Teddington School. To start the New Year it is our intention to focus on behaviour and safety. Your responses will inform our development plans for the rest of this academic year.

We are keen to get parental views on all aspects of school life and would be grateful if you could take a few minutes to complete the following survey on anti-bullying and share your current opinion. Please follow the link or copy and paste into a web browser:

This Week in School

On Wednesday 17 January a group of Year 10 GCSE history students attended a Holocaust Memorial Event hosted by Hampton School. This involved a workshop run by the Institute for Education’s Centre for Holocaust Education, followed by a rare opportunity to listen to the testimony of a Holocaust survivor. Bea Green was born in Munich in 1924 and lived through Nazi rule. She came to the UK on the Kinder transport as a refugee. This was an incredible opportunity for the students to hear her first hand account and to reflect on a very important time in world history. The students are studying Nazi Germany as part of the curriculum and events like this help develop their understanding. The Centre for Holocaust Education is the only specialist Holocaust institute supporting teachers in the classroom with contemporary research. For more information please use the following link: http://hmd.org.uk/resources/films/bea-greens-story

In Science lessons Year 7 students have been studying food and digestion, with a focus on balanced diets and healthy eating. To enhance the students’ experience of diets from different parts of the world they had the opportunity to try edible insects. They were very apprehensive but found this great fun. There was a whole bush tucker banquet—mealworms, crickets, chapulines and mealworms. The students concluded they were salty and crunchy and the overall favourite were the lemon chapulines...but don't add them to your shopping list just yet!.

House Drama

On Thursday 18 January the tenth annual House Drama competition took place in the theatre. There were four adaptations of the following plays performed:

The Lion King - Farah; Aladdin - Pankhurst; Matilda – Parks; and The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-time - Picasso

Each play was directed by Year 10 drama students. The students selected their chosen play in September and have conducted the auditions, cast the play and arranged the rehearsals. The plays were judged by a panel including former pupil, Ellie Clarke who was Alice in the recent Rose production of Alice in Winterland.

The following awards were given to students:

Best Actor Ned Davies who played Christopher from Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-time Best supporting acting Gabe Burgess who played Scar in The Lion King Best new comer - Barney Welford who played Miss Trunchball in Matilda

The prize for the cast and directors of the Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-time will be a trip to see a professional performance in London.

News from the Sixth Form On Monday 15 January a group of Year 12 students who are part of the High Achieving programme attended an introductory talk about potential Oxbridge applications. The aim of the talk, hosted by Hampton School was to provide the students with an understanding of the process of Oxbridge entrance, as well as tips on how to improve their chances of a successful application.

Can you help with our ‘Teddington Futures’ programme to raise the awareness of our students to the diverse range of careers and educational pathways open to them? It is a great way to support the school, to inspire young people and to make a difference to our students’ futures. Teddington School PTA Update Keep up with the latest PTA news on Twitter @teddschPTA or Facebook or come to the next meeting on Monday 29 January 2018 at 7.00pm and bring a friend! The next main fundraisers will be the annual School Quiz on Friday 16 March and the annual Plant Sale. These are both popular events and will sell out! There are parents who will organise the events but if you would like to be involved in either of these events please email the PTA [email protected] or pop along to the meeting after the Year 8 Consultation evening. Help is required for both events, and we welcome families willing to assist with advertising the Plant Sale by delivering leaflets or having an estate agent board at their property to promote the sale. Big events are great fun and raise lots of money but not everyone has the time to commit to planning and organisation but we have plenty of smaller jobs that need doing. We are happy for parents to simply attend the meeting to lend their voice and contribute ideas. We love spending the funds that we raise - if you would like to find out how this is done join us at the next meeting on Monday 29 January in Room 101 at 7.00pm. There is a small attendance at the meetings so new faces are really welcome! We are looking for a minutes secretary to take the minutes at the meetings? Email the [email protected] if you would like to take on this role.

Spending the funds raised In addition to the new Fender Bass guitar for the Music Department and the Canon EOS 1300D cameras for the photography Department the Media Studies Department have invested in 3 Panasonic Lumix cameras with microphone inputs, primarily for use by the A-Level Media Studies students on their practical music video and marketing coursework projects These are so new they are still in the boxes, but will be used next week by our students.

Teddington Trading - latest edition out now! The latest edition of the PTA classifieds Teddington Trading is now available. 100% of the advert tariffs goes to the PTA funds. Teddington Trading raises a regular and significant income for our funds but it can only exist with your support. This means reading it, circulating it to friends and family as well as using the services or contributing to it! Feedback is always welcome from both contributors and readers. If you would like to advertise please email the PTA on [email protected] with Teddington Trading in the subject line.
