Principal’s Column

What a week at PVPS, with our inaugural Arts Event. Behind the

scenes, much work has taken place by our exceptional visual arts

teacher Maria Lyon and her number one assistant, the equally

exceptional performing arts teacher Rita Davide. These two teachers

have such a passion for the arts and bring such inspiration and enthusiasm for the arts

to PVPS and the Arts Event really showcased the results of this. The works presented

whether performing or visual art were amazing. It was wonderful to see children take

their families around to view the gallery and

performances. The food van, wine, cheese, coffee and

cupcakes all created a festival atmosphere and such a

vibrant community gathering. I was very excited to be

successful in one of the silent auction items, which will

be proudly displayed in my office. I would like to give a

huge thank you to Maria and Rita, a special shout out to

Daniela Trapani who was in the thick of all the preparation, the specialist team and

school staff who assisted in many ways. In addition, to the team of parent helpers

who not only helped on the night but for many weeks preparing for the event, we say

a huge thank you. The event is only really successful by the participation of our

families and last but not least, by the creative and talented contribution of our

students.

RUOK Day

At PVPS, we hold the social and emotional wellbeing of our students at the centre of

all we do. I have seen updates on the school dojo page of activities and

understandings being developed as part of our Positive Communities Program this

term. It has had an anti-bullying focus but also a building of protective strategies. I was

in 5/6 O and the students were writing personal positive messages to a peer; ‘bucket

fillers’. For the few short minutes I was in there, I realised the students were very

aware of the effect and power of kindness, not only for the receiver but also

importantly for the giver. We have an amazing atmosphere within our staff also of

kindness and generosity. This contributes to making this complex and frenetic place a

good place to be.

On RUOK? Day, we are reminded about having open conversations with those

around us. Not just today but every day. Our national day of action is dedicated to

reminding everyone that any day is the day to ask, “Are you ok?” and support those

struggling with life. Taking part can be as simple as learning R U OK?’s four steps so

you can have a conversation that could change a life.

We farewell Kate Mitrione at the end of term to commence Parental Leave, as she

and her husband Matt await the birth of their first child. We wish them well at this

exciting and special time in their lives. We welcome John Petryczkowycz (Mr P) to

PVPS to take over from Kate in 3/4M. John has worked at PVPS in many classes. John

and Kate will work closely together to ensure a smooth transition.

Power/Building Update

I was expecting the long-awaited power upgrade to be undertaken on Tuesday the 4th

of September. Jemena the power authority finally had everything coordinated and

completed and the appointment was confirmed, however the Victorian Schools

Building Authority, a division of the Department of Education decided to withdraw

the approvals for the works. I have been working very hard to find out why this had

occurred but more importantly getting the works back on track. I have been given an

undertaking that the connection will go through and we should have use of the

community hub by the start of term 4. I do recall predicting the same thing for the

commencement of term 3 so I think we will hold any thoughts of celebrating this

work being completed until the lights are on in the new building and the generator is

gone!

2019 Planning for next year. The school is already planning staffing and enrolments

for next year. We now have a ceiling on our school total enrolment of 625. To

manage our growth we are restricting enrolments to those who PVPS is the closest

school or siblings of current students. Also as part of the planning, we would very

much like to know of any families who are planning to leave the school next year.

This allows us to organise our grades, school structures and staffing appropriately.

Therefore, could I encourage you to communicate any plans effecting the school in

2019 as soon as possible.

Hats! Hats! Hats!

From September 1st, all students are required to wear their school

hat. From Monday 10th, we will be enforcing our, 'no hat - no play'

Page 3: Friday 14th September - Pascoe Vale Primary · Friday 14th September Term 3 week 9 Principal’s Column What a week at PVPS, with our inaugural Arts Event. Behind the scenes, much

policy. This means that students with no hat will need to play in the shelter sheds.

Please note, we are also following our uniform policy and this means the hats need to

be the blue wide-brimmed or bucket hat.

ARTS EVENT Congratulations to the community of Pascoe Vale Primary School in making the Arts

Event a successful evening in many ways.

It was wonderful to see the parents supporting the Arts and mostly coming together

for the evening to celebrate their children’s wonderful work and achievements in the

Arts.

Many people need to be thanked for putting this event together. This is never

possible without such generous community support. First and foremost, to our most

magnificent parents that formed the Arts Committee. A huge thank you to Melissa,

Michelle, Beti, Jessman, Nuran, Maria O, Zan, Louise, Maria A, Jim, Julie, Nella, Elissa

and Ana, for giving of their own personal time to frame, assemble, prep up, label, seek

out cupcakes, paint ‘The Scream,’ make a tree, create a dragon and put the gallery

together to showcase our students’ creations through the Arts.

Many thanks also to our staff for their flexibility, support in preparation for the event

and their assistance on both evenings.

Pascoe Vale Primary School is building a cyber-safe community. We participated in

the Alannah & Madeline Foundation’s National eSmart Week from 2-8 September

2018, to show our commitment to keeping children, teens and adults safe online.

Held to coincide with National Child Protection Week, National eSmart Week

creates awareness, solutions and ideas and encourages the whole community to be

smart, safe and responsible when using digital technology. PVPS feels this was an

important initiative to be a part of in order to provide the skills for our 3-6 students

to be aware of the harm that can occur online through communication.

The Alannah & Madeline Foundation CEO, Lesley Podesta, said last year’s National

eSmart Week initiative proved how important it was to Australian communities to

protect young people online, explaining that Foundation programs such as eSmart

Schools and eSmart Libraries are pivotal in educating people of all ages about cyber

safety.

“The internet is a great place to learn, be creative and stay connected, but with one

in five young Australians found to have been cyber bullied each year, it is important

that we invest in giving our communities the skills they need to be responsible and

safe online,” Ms Podesta said. “The best way to build an eSmart Australia is to engage

with the whole community. We know that National eSmart Week gives us the

chance to promote important themes and messages by running engaging activities for

all Australians.”

National eSmart Week is an initiative developed by the Alannah & Madeline

Foundation, in partnership with Telstra Foundation.

What’s Happening in 3/4K

WACABARA written by 34K

34K are learning about explorers. We have created

our own mythological story about a sea creature to

scare and frighten explorers who want to travel the

world and find new lands. We are warning explorers

who want to discover the Arctic Ocean that

Wacabara is dangerous!

Wacabara is an aqua coloured water dragon with anchor arms, enchanted

wings and three water-laser eyes. It is 10 meters long and can become

invisible. This scary creature lurks in the Arctic Ocean creating cold killer

crashing waves. The monster also flies above the ocean looking for ships to

devour. Wacabara's daily diet consists of orcas, polar bears and seals.

Usually, this sea dragon is under water protecting the ocean but when it's

disturbed by a ship, it becomes invisible, gliding up into the clouds and

spiralling down towards the ship changing back to be seen. Wacabara then

creates a tidal wave capsizing the ship and pulling it under water drowning

the explorers and damaging the ship with its anchor arms.

Beware of Wacabara, it's not an ordinary sea monster.

Beware explorers, never enter the Arctic Ocean or else…

A message from Krithi in 1LI performed a Bollywood dance with my sister

Krishi and my senior friends at Pascoe Vale Girls College on their Gala Music Night. I

was the youngest participant in the school Gala and everyone appreciated our

spectacular performance. Here is a picture of my sister and

myself in our costumes we wore for the dance By Krithi
