Isaiah 28:16, 17 Therefore thus says the Lord God: Behold, I lay in Zion

a stone for a foundation, A tried stone, a precious cornerstone, a sure foundation; Whoever believes will not act hastily. Also I will make justice the measuring

line, And righteousness the plummet; The hail will sweep away the refuge of lies, And the waters will

overflow the hiding place.

What is a plumbline or plummet?

Romans 8:29 For whom He foreknew, He also predestined [prepared a destiny] to be conformed to the

image of His Son, that He might be the first born among many brethren.

Ephesians 4:13 … till we all come to the unity of the faith and of the

knowledge of the Son of God, to a perfect man, to the measure of the stature of the fullness of Christ.

Genesis 22: 13 – 14 Then Abraham lifted his eyes and looked, and

there behind him was a ram caught in a thicket by its horns. So Abraham went and took the ram,

and offered it up for a burnt offering instead of his son. And Abraham called the name of the

place, The-Lord-Will-Provide; as it is said to this day, “In the Mount of the Lord it shall be

provided.”

1 John 4:8 God is love

1 Corinthians 13:2 If I have the gift of prophecy and can fathom all

mysteries and all knowledge, and if I have a faith that can move mountains, but have not love, I am nothing.

You – love = 0

Ecclesiastes 3: 11 Also He has put eternity in their hearts.

Proverbs 4:23Above all else, guard your heart for it is the

wellspring of life.

Painful circumstance: Parents divorce (often happens in childhood – the heart of a child is particularly

vulnerable).

Agreement made/lie believed: I’ve caused all the mess because I’m a lot of work – I’m a burden – in

order for people to love me I need to make sure I’m not a burden.

Response built in reaction to the lie: “Never accept help from anyone because that will make you a

burden and unworthy of love.”

Luke 6:45 The good man brings good things out of the good

stored up in his heart, and the evil man brings evil things out of the evil stored up in his heart. For out of the overflow of his heart his mouth

speaks.

Rejection responses • Shyness, nervousness, insecurity – people will reject me if they

really know/see/hear me.

• Self-pity – things are not fair. The whole world is against me. Even God is against me.

• Guilt – I must have done something wrong for everybody to hate me.

• Depression, sadness, despair, apathy, suicide – Nobody loves me so there’s no point living.

Rebellion responses

• Pride, arrogance – I’m not loved therefore I’m going to compensate by pretending I’m awesome.

• Striving – I have to earn any love that I’m given

• Critical – I’m unworthy of love, therefore you must be unworthy as well.

• Manipulation – The only way to get the love I need is to manipulate people

into giving it to me.

• Bitterness, anger, hostility, rage, murder – I’m angry that nobody loves me.

Proverbs 18:14 – A man’s spirit sustains him in sickness, but a crushed spirit who can bear.

Isaiah 61:11The spirit of the Lord God is upon Me, because the Lord has anointed Me to prech good tidings to the poor; He

has sent me to heal the broken hearted, to proclaim liberty to the captives, And the opening of the prison to

those who are bound.

Isaiah 28:16, 17 Therefore thus says the Lord God: Behold, I lay in Zion a

stone for a foundation, A tried stone, a precious cornerstone, a sure foundation; Whoever believes will not act hastily. Also I will make justice the measuring

line, And righteousness the plummet; The hail will sweep away the refuge of lies, And the waters will

overflow the hiding place.

Amos 7: 7, 8This is what He showed me: the Lord was standing by a wall that had been built true to plumb, with a plumb-line in his hand. And the Lord asked me, “What do you

see Amos?”“A plumb-line,” I replied.

Then the Lord said, “Look, I am setting a plumb-line among my people Israel; I will spare them no longer. The

high places of Isaac will be destroyed and the sanctuaries of Israel will be ruined; with my sword I will

rise against the house of Jeroboam.”

Hosea 2: 14 Therefore I am now going to allure her; I will lead her

into the desert and speak tenderly to her.

Psalm 147:3He heals the broken hearted and binds up their wounds.

Isaiah 66:2 Has not my hand made all these things, and so they came into being?” declares the Lord. This is the one I esteem: he who is humble and contrite in spirit and

trembles at my word.

Psalm 34:17, 18 The righteous cry out, and the Lord hears them; he

delivers them from all their troubles. The Lord is close to the broken hearted and saves those who are crushed in

spirit.

The walls around our hearts

For the Lord does not see as man sees; for man looks at the outward appearance, but the Lord looks at the heart.
