The development of multiple interests and community engagement are central to the Lawrence experience, where classes or creative and research projects tailored to students’ educational interests and life objectives are prevalent. Lawrence draws its 1,500 students from nearly every state and more than 50 countries. Its picturesque, residential campus is nestled on the banks of the Fox River in Appleton, Wisconsin.

LAWRenCe STuDenTSHelen Barton—Austin, TexasGonzalo Garza Independence High School Traveling�to�five�continents�by�the�age�of�6,�Helen�learned�to�appreciate�other�cultures�and�beliefs early in life. Since then, she has kept touch with her 20 different pen pals from around the world and spends three days each week teaching English to immigrants and refugees. Helen will study international relations and political science at Lawrence, and then go on to law school to become an immigration lawyer. Perhaps someday you’ll hear about a new U.N. ambassador who happens to be a Lawrence alumna!
Daniel Bernstein—Northridge, CaliforniaLos Angeles County High School for the ArtsMusic has always been central to Daniel’s life—even as a toddler, he was always happiest listening�to�Miles�Davis�or�Mozart�on�his�headphones.�He�began�studying�piano�at�age�6,�but fell in love with clarinet a few years later. He went on to become the principal clarinetist at� the�Los�Angeles�County�High�School� for� the�Arts,� rising�before�dawn� for�his�one-hour�commute to school by train. Outside of school, Daniel can be found exploring Southern California: hiking mountain trails, running along the beach or joining his dad on tours of historic buildings and neighborhoods.
Sarah Diamond—Winchester, MassachusettsWinchester High SchoolSarah had always been musically inclined, but her passion for music grew to new heights when�she�had�her�first�harp�lesson�at�age�8.�Since�then,�she�has�performed�with�her�high�school’s orchestra and symphony, as well as at weddings, in senior living centers, in hospitals and�at�various�fund�raisers.�Since�high�school�began,�Sarah’s�also�been�leading�the�service-learning�group�“Setting�the�Table:�From�Field�to�Plate,”�which�aims�to�educate�Boston-area�youth about food, farming and hunger. Stemming from this, she also volunteers her time on a�local�organic�farm,�and�has�traveled�to�Costa�Rica�to�work�on�a�self-sustaining�co-op�to�help�farmers secure their future.
Allen Hodge—Happy Valley, OregonCleveland High SchoolAllen has studied his culture through the Chinese immersion program since he was in kindergarten. His connection with his culture has also been aided by frequent travels to China. While participating in the full IB curriculum at Cleveland, Allen has been working at Men’s Wearhouse and volunteering at a religious hospital for more than 300 hours during his high school career. His perseverance and commitment can also be shown through his black belt in taekwondo.
Tamara nassar—Amman, JordanKings AcademyBeing�a�gold-medal�taekwondo�champion,�a�guitarist�and�a�part-time�photographer�wasn’t�enough for Tamara. Her burning passion for literature and art drove her to initiate her school’s�very�first�independent,�secretive�Dead�Poets�Society,�called�Ecce Homo (Behold the Man). The group itself, composed solely of students, gathers to go beyond what they learn in class and creates their own words, compiling them under pseudonyms in a publication they call The Vitruvian. Tamara also runs an art blog in which she publishes her artwork and photography.
Jack Plasterer—Madison, WisconsinMadison West High School
Jack�has�won�multiple�varsity�letters�for�cross-country�and�track.�He's�on�the�student�council.�He's�a�member�of� the�German�honors�society.�But�what�really�caught�our�eye� is� that�he� co-founded�and�led�Nerd�Club,�which�strongly�emphasizes�the�importance�of�science�fiction�and�fantasy,�as�well�as�accepting�people�who�don’t�feel�they�fit�in�elsewhere.
Ariela Rosa—Bronx, New YorkBronx Community College
As�a�non-traditional�transfer�student,�Ariela�brings�her�unique�perspective�as�a�Bronx,�New�York, native into the classroom. Ariela is passionate about issues that affect her community, such as homelessness and the lack of access to quality education. She has volunteered at� Covenant� House,� a� nonprofit� organization� that� helps� homeless� youth,� and� with� the�Trevor�Project,�an�organization�that�helps�LGBTQ�youth�in�crisis.�She�previously�attended�Bronx Community College where she studied liberal arts and media studies, and was the salutatorian of her graduating class.
Steven Swanson—Mequon, Wisconsinuniversity School of Milwaukee
With a father who graduated from Lawrence in 1976, Steven is continuing a family legacy at Lawrence after being a “lifer” at the University School of Milwaukee since kindergarten. He made his mark on the USM community through service and guitar and piano performances, (both instruments he taught himself).
Chris Williams—Albuquerque, New MexicoSandia Preparatory School
Like�many�that�come�to�Lawrence,�Christopher�finds�music�truly�fascinating.�He�has�studied�trombone for seven years, and decided to pursue the arts actively in his junior year of high school. Christopher’s audition with Lawrence University’s Conservatory of Music went better�than�he�could�have�ever�imagined�(i.e.,�he�got�in!),�so�he�seized�the�opportunities�available at Lawrence and decided to move across the country from the deserts of New Mexico�to�the�“frozen�tundra”�of�northeast�Wisconsin.
Paige Witter—Denver, ColoradoGeorge Washington High School
At the age of 16, shortly after she started competing in modern pentathlon, (fencing, swimming,� show� jumping,� and� a� biathlon� of� pistol� shooting� and� cross-country� running),�Paige�qualified�for� the�U.S.�Youth�Nationals�Competition�and�took�fourth�place.�The�next�year,�she�finished�with�a�silver�medal�and�qualified�for�the�2013�Modern�Pentathlon�Youth�World Cup. During her senior year she represented Team USA in Hungary, competing against athletes from 30 different countries. Through high school she trained in fencing, cross-country,� shooting� and� swimming,� where� she� qualified� for� state� three� out� of� four�years. At Lawrence she plans to continue parts of her training while balancing her excellent academic performance.
