We welcomed Graduate exhibitions, Helios, the MA Glass Show and Sun Awards and we played our part in several wonderful initiatives including The Late Nights and ¡VAMOS! Festival.The Well Thread Textile Exhibition and Stop Press: IV Printermakers were a great success and established the Corner Gallery as a perfect venue for more intimate, fringe exhibitions. The Biscuit Factory continues to be an ever popular venue with events, ranging from fabulous Weddings, Birthday Parties and Bar Mitzvahs to business seminars, book launches and charity auctions.

Past Ramy and Marilyn Zack, manager Paul Roberts and all the members of the Biscuit Factory Team wish you a Happy and Healthy 2009. In 2008 The Biscuit Factory continued its quest to promote the work of artists in the North East. In March Emma Holliday won best Visual Artist at The Journal’s Culture Awards. At the Affordable Art Fair in London we showcased several local painters including Francesca Hudson and Chris Jones. The Biscuit Factory hosted various successful exhibitions by local artists including Jim Edwards, Mary- Ann Rogers, Kevin Day, Figure 8, Dave Barden, Eve Bauer, Anthony Marshall and Lizzie Rowe.

Future ¡VAMOS! TANGO EXHIBITION: March 27th - 28th An exhibition of sumptious tango inspired photography by North East artist Dan Prince.EXPERIMENTS IN FASHION: April 24th - May 30th The Biscuit Factory is proud to present garments designed by students during Experiments in Fashion, a 4 day fashion school residency for young designers between the ages of 15 and 25 held at Woodhorn Centre.PRINT BIENNALE: June 26th - October 4th An International open exhibition organised by Northern Print and staged by the Hatton Gallery, Laing Art Gallery and Northern Print. The Biscuit Factory is celebrating the Biennale by presenting our own mixed exhibition of print-makers in the Corner Gallery, opening 12th June.LATE SHOWS: May 15th - 16th We will be opening our doors until 11pm and run a programme of live art events with a late bar and music. The event is celebrated all over Newcastle and Gateshead, and once again a free bus service will be provided to link participating venues.

Present SPRING EXHIBITION: March 6th - June 8th Diane Urwin’s beautiful still life work is on show in the Cube gallery. The Corner Gallery hosts an inspiring installation by local artist Kathryn Brame. We showcase the work of artists including Susan Dobson, Lisa House, Rob Shaw and Stephanie Cunningham and we exhibit new work by artists including Rod Sutterby, Frank Briffa and Pete Winstanley. HORSLEY PRINTMAKERS: March 6th - April 19th Horsley Printmakers Carol Nunan, Rebecca Vincent, Mandy Pattullo and Chris Daunt as well as many of their students return to The Biscuit Factory for the third year running with a wonderful selection of innovative hand-made prints. WOOLY WEST: from March 6th Across Benwell and Scotswood people have been busy knitting, crocheting, cross-stitching and working with wool to recreate scenes featuring in a new film made by a local film-maker in collaboration with Search (a voluntary project working with older people in the west end).SUN AWARDS: March 6th - 19th April The Sun Awards celebrate and showcase the work of the best commercial photographers working in the North of England.

Diane UrwinDiane Urwin is a Berkshire based artist, originally from Nottingham. Having raised a family she has devoted the last twelve years to her life long interest in art and to painting full time. Diane is an admirer of the works of the Old Masters particularly, Chardin, Caravaggio and Vermeer.She bases her approach on their techniques, building up her paintings

layer-by-layer, producing carefully blended tonal shades to achieve realistic textures and surfaces for her images.More recently, Diane has expanded her attention to include real life studies of fruit on the bough and plant life.Her ideas are refreshed by her travels throughout Europe, North America, Asia and the Middle East.

Diane is a member of the Society of Women Artists (SWA) and exhibits annually at their London Exhibition.Her awards include:- ‘Best in Show’ at the Annual United Artists (UA) Exhibition in London 2001 with a still life painting.She won the specially sponsored section for ‘best work with a Japanese Theme’ at the Annual SWA Exhibition in London 2002.

Kathryn BrameKathryn endeavours to explore the frailty of our human existence and finds images of the elderly an appropriate means with which to communicate her concerns. She has affection for these elderly characters and finds them incredibly endearing and often amusing. Kathryn’s work celebrates the elderly, their idiosyncrasies, their daily routines, their shopping trolleys and plastic rain hoods. She finds these small details in life a source of enjoyment and escapism, and by taking snap shots of these moments she can build a collection of images which then can be treasured.

“I feel that the diminutive scale of the work induces a playfulness that forces the viewer to examine the work at close range, echoing the body posture of the subjects in space, and by moving forwards and closer towards the images to fully scrutinise, we reduce the void that separates us and the subject matter and so begin to identify with it. The vulnerability of the subject and how it dominates and commands the space creates an interesting paradox, which I feel has now become the fulcrum of my practice.”

The work in Susan’s exhibition reflects the strong affinity she feels with remote and wild places. Being immersed in the landscape for long periods of time, whether sitting drawing, walking, trekking or climbing, gives her a deep and developing understanding of how the mountains fit together and a feel for the rock.

Whether it is in the wild weather of winter in the West Highlands of Scotland or under the clear blue skies and sunshine of the Italian Dolomites, it is important that Susan spends time recording her observations. Out on the hill she uses waterproof drawing pens to record the structure of the landscape. She then applies watercolour washes

to capture the colours, light, mood and weather conditions. These detailed studies are the basis for her paintings, etchings and monoprints made back in the studio or print workshop.

“My images convey the moods and feelings of being in and observing the landscape in all weathers and seasons. ”

Susan Dobson

Rob ShawA self taught painter, Rob began painting when his family moved to Boulby, overlooking Staithes, in 1994. The village, with its clusters of cottages balanced precariously against the elements, is the source of his inspiration. He constantly

seeks new ways to depict the buildings and their ever shifting relationship with the winds, the tides, the storms and the light that envelop them. His work exploits the variety of perspective offered by cliff top views and the

winding paths climbing up and behind the cottages. Once seen these paint-ings are rarely forgotten but become ingrained in the viewer’s memory of the unique and resolute beauty of this place.

Lyndsay SimonsFor this body of work Lyndsay has selected images from ‘old master paintings’ (Leonardo, Bronzino, Holbein and Nattier) and also cuttings from magazines and newspapers. She has used old lace, table and tray cloths and tumble dryer felt in her painted surfaces. As Francis Bacon once said this creates a ‘compost’ from which to grow ideas and images.

Lyndsay Simons’ paintings are then constructed from a juxtaposition of these disparate things. She plays with proportion, cropping, concealment and revealing. Some surfaces are created by dribbling paint and layering colour, this process relies on a loss of control and chance contrasting with the carefully rendered application of layers of paint in the studied image. She attempts to

question the notion of beauty and how female identity has been constructed through representation and art history and how body image is very much manipulated through the media and popular culture today. The use of table cloths and lace allow her to reference the notion of work and value in the domestic world.

Stephanie CunninghamStephanie Cunningham has lived and worked in Penzance since 1998. She discovered an affinity with clay on coming to Cornwall and is self-taught in ceramic sculpture.Stephanie’s work is mostly influenced by animal forms and she particularly loves exploring her relationship with horses and dogs, having spent much of her

childhood in Scotland growing up with them. The deep love and respect she has for these animals is expressed in her work. Stephanies ceramic forms are stylised to emphasize power, elegance and grace, or sometimes to convey a comical movement or a deep sense of peace in a resting form.

Stephanie’s larger sculptures are suitable for outdoor display.

“I take inspiration from the shape and movement in the creatures that surround us. The way a body holds itself whether in motion or stillness. A look or gesture will speak to me and inspire me to capture that moment.”

Rod Sutterby

Hexam based Rod Sutterby is mainly known for his wonderful illustrations of salmon and trout. He now dedicates

himself mainly to landscape painting.His large Northumberland paintings utilise bright, chromatic colouration

to explore the wild contour and fast, ambient light around his studio location.

Pete Winstanley was born in Purley, Surrey in 1950 and was taught the technique of batik when he was 15 by his brother, who learnt it in Africa. In 1977 Pete moved to Durham.

His work has been widely exhibited throughout the North East.

‘I love walking in the country, and much of my work is inspired by the English countryside. The

technique of batik produces distinctive effects, and much of my work is also inspired by the unique opportunities offered by the medium itself.’

Frank BriffaMuch of Frank’s recent painting have been inspired by music, but also contain reference to literature.

Frank takes various elements of music and attempts to translate them into visual form. Instrumentation and

tonality for example, suggest various colours while the layering of different voice and sounds suggests textures.

Brian was born in a small Essex village in 1942. His rural upbringing gave him the opportunity to appreciate and observe the natural environment from a very young age, and this would later become his main influence.

Brian Barnes uses a wide variety of timbers both native and exotic and creates stunning practical pieces for the home. His turned bowls and quirky tables show the beauty and form of this natural material at it’s best.

He produces a great range of wooden artworks from a complete range of colourful fruits, to unique vessels and furniture.

Kimberley’s stunning jewellery illustrates beautifully her love for the decorative qualities and wonder of jewellery design. Her eye for detail and exquisite craftsmanship is obvious.

Since her graduation in Design at Buckinghamshire Chilterns University College, Kimberley has had several successful exhibitions, also winning the New Designers award at Goldsmiths in 2005.

Based in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, Patricia works with pure silver, or 999 silver. This type is softer which is essential for the weaving technique she uses. Her work is also available in 18ct gold on request.

Her bold and striking style is suitable for everyday wear and no two pieces are the same. Her work is certainly an exquisite piece of art in itself; something to treasure for a lifetime.

Suzanne makes beautiful glass beads using a technique known as lampworking – the art of making small objects from glass melted in the flame of a torch. Discovering and exploring the art of

lampworking drew Suzanne towards incorporating glass as a medium in her jewellery designs, injecting colour and contrast to the silver and other materials used.

Horsley Printmakers and their students return to the Biscuit Factory for the third year running with more innovative hand-made prints. Each year this exhibition sets out to demonstrate the versatility and inventiveness of

printmaking. The students explore diverse subject matter using the extraordinary mark-making potential of etchings, collagraphs, monotypes, lino-cuts and mixed-media work. Wood engraving, a traditional and

finely worked print medium, is represented for the first time. Rebecca Vincent and Carol Nunan with their guest tutors, Chris Daunt and Mandy Pattullo will show their work alongside their students.

Rebecca will have more of her popular patchwork landscapes. Carol has a new range of collagraphs exploring the historical landscape and coast of Northumberland. Mandy Pattullo will be showing a selection of colourful new monotypes. Finally, Chris Daunt, will be exhibiting some of his beautiful and highly collectable wood engravings.

Horsley Printmakers is a printmaking studio based at The Hearth, Horsley in Northumberland with an annual program of independent printmaking workshops and courses for the Centre for Lifelong Learning, University of Sunderland.

The Biscuit Factory is very pleased to welcome back The SUN Awards.Now in its 20th year, The Sun Awards celebrates and showcases the best commercial photography and photographers in the north of England. In this exhibition you can take in the atmosphere of a shimmering Venetian

sunrise, sore with choughs on alpine slopes or even rub shoulders with superheroes in fast food joints. Featuring the work of 27 professional photographers this exhibition has something for everyone.The exhibited works include prize winners for best use of location and best image.

These Special Edition prints are in limited editions of just 25 and offer a unique chance to take home some of the most striking and innovative photography being made to day by some of the north’s most talented and successful photographers.

Experiments in Fashion is a partnership project between Inspire Northumberland, Wansbeck District Council and London College of Fashion. The project aims to inspire and nurture young designers living in the North East of England.In 2008, 37 young designers between the ages of 15 and 25 took part in an intensive 4 day fashion school residency at Woodhorn Museum, Archives and Country Park. They designed and

produced garments inspired by the market towns of Northumberland, resulting in a truly remarkable fashion show. Three talented young designers were selected and mentored by Wayne Hemingway and were awarded a week’s traineeship at Hemingway Design in London.The Biscuit Factory is proud to present the garments designed by the three young designers during their mentorship with Wayne Hemingway,

and also garments and accessories from many other promising young designers who participated in the Woodhorn residency. Drawing from the landscape and architecture of Northumberland, they have used both the natural environment and social world as inspiration for their final creations.Don’t miss your chance to see a unique collection of original designs, created by some of Britain’s freshest young fashion visionaries.

¡VAMOS!As part of the ¡VAMOS! Weekender The Biscuit Factory is proud to premiere a brand new exhibition of sultry tango inspired visual art by photographer Dan Prince. Featuring dancers captured in locations thoroughout the region, these highly stylized and striking images are influenced by the Argentinian artist Fabian Perez.

Dan was inspired by the highly sensual visual style of Perez’ work and had always planned his own unique tango series. Dan however has given it his own flavour, taking the traditional and intimate moves of Tango expression whilst siting them in contrasting and unusual landscapes. As well as feasting on the artwork there will

be (on the launch night only) a short artist talk by Dan, live tango dance performance accompanied by music and afterwards food and drinks in the cafe space courtesy of the Byker Vista Cafe. This ¡VAMOS! exhibition is only open during the weekender so get yourself along to the launch to see what it’s all about!
