Embracing NožínkyChuck NickolayMayor of New Prague

Vitame Vas! On behalf of the city of New Prague, I would like to welcome you to the Nozinky Festival. Due to the pandemic, the annual Dozinky festi-val has taken on a different flavor. Just like many of the area’s annual celebrations, the Chamber had to make the tough decision that cancelled the Friday night car cruise and street dance along with the Saturday’s parade. With those events being cancelled, the Cham-

ber is keeping the spirit of Doz-inky Festival alive by hosting other activities both in person and virtually. I encourage you to check out these events in a so-cially acceptable manner to show support for our local Chamber of Commerce. Especially now, I want to

emphasize that our local businesses need our support more than ever. The current state of the economy has put many local businesses on the brink of closure. The Chamber is doing a great

job to continue to sponsor activities that get peo-ple to the downtown area. These small business-es are the backbone of our town and we need them to survive and thrive. Also, in support of the Chamber, please visit their website and order your official Nozinky ap-parel, and leave a note of appreciation! I am sure they would love to hear from you. Let’s embrace this year’s Nozinky festival and show that New Prague will always be a welcom-ing community!

Your Hosts for Nozínky® WeekendMembers of the New Prague Chamber of Commerce

Your year-round support of these businesses allows Dozínky® to take place each year.

Virtual Nožínky Talent Show to be shown Sept. 19

There may not be a stage this year, but you can still show off your skills!

Gareis

Wishing you a safe and enjoyable NožínkyJim GareisChief of Police/Emergency Manager

The New Prague Police Department would like to wish everyone a safe and en-joyable 36th Annual Dožίnky Festival week-end. During this Nožίnky weekend, I would ask that you work to keep yourself and your family healthy. With COVID-19 being a ma-jor concern in our own com-munity, state, and the nation, we are not having a usual Dožίnky Celebration.

So, if you choose to partici-

pate in any social activities for Nožίnky con-tinue to practice good hygiene with washing hands often, social distancing, and mask wearing when appropriate, to avoid spread-ing the virus while socializing. For those that do choose to socialize over the weekend, it is very important that you limit that social-ization to be safe to avoid either contracting or spreading the coronavirus.

The New Prague Chamber wanted to sponsor an event for the celebration. Memo-rial Park was chosen as the venue because it offered amenities and ample space for the event. The event was authorized by the City Council to be from 4:00 PM to 9:00 PM on Wednesday, September 16th and Thursday,

September 17th. During each day there will be three food trucks/stands available along with some entertainment for a designated period. Because the event is from 4:00 PM to 9:00 PM it should offer ample time to spread the number of participants through-out the evening to allow families to partic-ipate. The Council also designated the park be alcohol free during this event from 3:00 PM to 11:00 PM each day. This was done because the Chamber’s intent is to make this a family orientated event.

For those that choose to participate with social activities over the weekend, we ask that you continue to take safe measures to prevent the spread of the coronavirus. Bars

and restaurants continue to operate under executive orders that mandate no more than 50% capacity while maintaining social dis-tancing of groups and families, along with mask wearing. The Council has not lifted the public consumption of alcohol for this weekend. If you choose to move from one venue to another while socializing, do not take any alcoholic drinks off the premises.

All this change in our lives is an effort to keep friends and family members safe as we continue through this process. I would ask that you continue those safety practices and enjoy your Nožίnky weekend.

While the COVID-19 pan-demic is creating so much uncertainty, the New Prague Chamber of Commerce wants to provide and incor-porate a little something in people’s lives to make them smile and be able to enjoy an activity in a safe manner, that will also have a good impact on them. The Chamber is welcoming the New Prague community to participate in a Front Yard Decorating Contest. It carries a prize of $150 in New Prague Czechs. Judging will begin at noon this Sunday, Sept. 20. The theme for the contest is Dozinky Through the Ages. Meaning a person can create a display that touches on as-pects of 35 years of Dozinky celebrations. People in the New Prague community can use an assortment of articles that they

can find locally and get creative with the items. By doing so, residents will bring out a positive feeling for the city and community. The Chamber hopes that people who are out for a walk or a drive will enjoy viewing the decorated homes and have a positive outlook that things will get better with time.

Contest judging will be done by various members of the com-munity. The judging will be based on creativity, originality, spirit and completeness while staying in line with the selected theme.

Area residents might have noticed some-thing a little different in the parking lot at Gopher State Railway Museum (GSRM) north of New Prague along Highway 21. The new addition is a 1950 Alco diesel electric lo-comotive that arrived late Monday evening, August 31. The locomotive comes from the Univer-sity of Minnesota where it worked the past

25 years shuttling coal hoppers into the east bank campus coal plant. The plant supplies heat and electricity to the entire east and west bank campuses of the University of Minne-sota and its hospital facilities. The plant con-verted to natural gas in 2010 and the locomo-tive was no longer needed by the University. Volunteers from the museum approached the University in 2017 about possibly donating

the fully operational locomotive to the muse-um. In late December 2019, University repre-sentatives contacted GSRM and told them the University couldn’t donate the locomotive, but it could be sold - the asking price - $1 plus state sales tax for a grand total of $1.07. The hardest part of the project was trans-porting the locomotive to the museum in

New Prague. Since the Gopher State Rail-way isn’t connected to the UP track next to the museum’s grounds, the locomotive had to travel by truck from the University to the museum. Volunteers began work around 2 p.m. on Monday, Aug. 24, to prepare the lo-comotive for the move. Everything below the frame needed to be removed. For the next seven days, volunteers worked to remove piping, air tanks, batteries, battery boxes, steps, couplers and wiring. Air and electrical connections to the wheels were re-moved so they could be separated from the locomotive and shipped on a separate truck. By August 31, the locomotive was ready to be loaded on a trailer. At 6 p.m., Monday, Aug. 31, the locomo-tive had been loaded on a trailer and began its journey to New Prague. The Minnesota De-partment of Transportation routed it during the 85 mile trip to New Prague to ensure the locomotive cleared bridges along the way. The route took it north on Interstate 35W to Interstate 694/494, then south on Minnesota Highway 77 to Interstate 35E, finally heading west on Scott County Road 2 through Elko New Market. The caravan arrived at the mu-seum in New Prague around 8:30 p.m. the evening of August 31. The following morning, the crew began unloading the locomotive on some temporary track and was finished by 2:30 p.m. GSRM volunteers plan to spend the fall of 2020 reassembling the locomotive with the goal to operate it for visitors on the museum’s caboose train in 2021. While the locomotive was bought for a very economical price, the cost for transport-ing it was approximately $25,000. Anyone who would like to help can make a contribu-tion towards the moving expense. Go to the museum’s website www.gsrm.org or check its Facebook page for more details.

Crews work to put the wheels back under the new locomotive at Gopher State Railway Museum, north of New Prague, on Tuesday, Sept. 1. People who helped were employees of Twin City Recovery Services, which provided the tow trucks to lift the locomotive and STS LLC, which provided the transportation for the locomotive.

This year’s annual Czech Village, sponsored by Our Czech Heritage Club, will look a little different than in years past.

Still available are traditional and modern craft items for purchase, ge-nealogical information, along with in-formation of historical and present day significance.

An addition for this year is an outdoor showing of the annual Czech movie start-ing at 7:30 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 19.

This year’s selection, “I Served the King of England,” rated R, is a dark comedy following the life of Jan Dite. As a young man Jan comes to believe that wealth and prestige are the ulti-mate source of happiness. Jan works his way up from a lowly train attendant to a series of jobs in prominent hotels un-til a relationship with a fanatical Nazi causes his social ruin. After serving 15 years in a Czechoslovakian prison Jan looks back on his life.

This Czech film with English subti-tles has been described as a funny, viva-cious, profound film that depicts the im-pact of 20th Century events on the lives of individuals. As always the movie is free.

So, mask up and come down to the Czech Village set up its temporary site at 211 First Ave. NE on Saturday, Sept. 19, and learn about your Czech heri-tage, purchase one of a kind items and enjoy a free movie. All are welcome.

The Food Trucks in the Park event is a family friendly event presented by the New Prague Chamber of Commerce and will feature a few food trucks and live entertainment acts Wednesday, September 16th & Thursday, September 17th in Memorial Park. Those who attend are asked to maintain social distance, avoid congregating for longer than necessary, and/or wear a mask in situations where you cannot keep at least 6 ft. of space between you and someone outside of your immediate family. All food trucks will be well spaced out to avoid crowding.

For those who are not comfortable attending but would love to see the local entertainment acts listed below, please join us LIVE on Facebook @newpraguec-hamber during the listed show times.

See the New Prague Chamber of Commerce ad on page 7B for schedule.

For those wishing to participate in the Virtual Kolacky Eating Contest, they must submit video by Sunday, Sept. 20, at 11:59 p.m. Contestants can film the video at the location of their choice. Registration is required to take part in this virtual version of the popular contest. The winner will receive $100 in New Prague Czechs. Participants must have signed a waiver form and, if under age 18, must have their parent or legal guardian sign the waiver. The way the contest works this year is contestants can stop at a local bakery and purchase a few more kolacky then they think they can eat within 2 minutes. Partic-ipants can find a location of their choice and then set up their camera to record or have a family or friend film the action and start eating as many kolacky as they can in

2 minutes. People can sub-mit their videos to the Chamber via Facebook Messenger @newprague-chamber by 11:59 p.m. on September 20. Contestants will be reimbursed for their participation. The winner of the con-test in 2019 was Kyle Si-mon, who chewed through 11 kolacky in three min-utes. Simon of Maple Grove, originally from New Prague, is a St. Paul firefighter and was among six contestants at last year’s competition. One of Simon’s opponents was Andy McGannon of New Prague, the 2018 win-ner of the Kolacky Eat-ing Contest, who made it through seven kolacky.
