ISSUE 81 - 13 SEPTEMBER 2021

We’re back in full beer festival mode here at TWICB after enjoying a fabulous day out at the new Brew By Numbers Riverside premises on Friday, and are looking forward to Beer Central in Birmingham this coming weekend. It’s great to share a beer chatting with friends and brewers from up and down the country and talk about this wonderful industry. You could say we’re pumped.

Polly’s Brew Co.

Electric Indigo

6.2% IPA Supercharged with Simcoe, Mosaic and Columbus for maximum flavour intensity

without being overwhelming. Mosaic takes the lead for a metric tonne of blueberry,

Columbus traverse from new school juice into old school grassiness.

Polly’s Brew Co.

Conditioned Response

5.9% Raspberry Wheat Beer Idaho 7 is a hop varietal that positively bursts with tropical flavours a-plenty. This

beer is pure and unadulterated pineapple juice - the only thing missing from it is a mini-parasol and sparkler to complete that holiday vibe. A laid back, super moreish

pale.

Polly’s Brew Co.

It’s Just Folklore

5.6% Pale Ale A triple threat stateside line-up of Simcoe, Mosaic and El Dorado bring the high juice and low bitterness, all held in suspension by Polly's in-house bespoke LA3 strain

Track Brewing Co.

All That Awaits

8.5% Gold Top DIPA A deep malt base of Extra Pale, Wheat and a generous helping of Rolled Oats create a creamy full body. An addition of Lactose brings a smooth decadence. On top of this,

were added lashings of Citra, Enigma & Cashmere. The result is a thick, blazing yellow daydream with notes of Honeydew, Candied Orange and Ripe Peach. The finish is long

and sweet with a delicate bitterness and a floral note of sweet woodruff.

Track Brewing Co.

Hear It Again 4.5% Pale Ale Brewed with Citra, Nelson & Rakau - The last bit of summer caught in a can. Bright

zesty lemon gives way to gentle ebbs of white grape and grapefruit for a truly thirst-

quenching Pale Ale.

BREWERS CORNER

Let’s start with some superb news from the USA. At last the bottom appears to be falling out of the absurd hard seltzer category, just as all the Evil Macros (and Gordon Ramsey) were gearing up to flood the market.

https://www.thedrinksbusiness.com/2021/09/is-the-hard-selt-zer-craze-turning-sour/

Good riddance!

Here’s an interesting long-form article about the growth of Craft Breweries in the UK, and whether the market is becoming saturated, or not.

https://www.beer52.com/ferment/article/1002/back-in-the-day

Some encouraging data here from Barclaycard about the steep rise in consumer spending in pubs in Aug 2021, compared to pre-COVID in Aug 2019.

https://www.morningadvertiser.co.uk/Article/2021/09/07/What-are-people-spending-in-pubs?

A big factor here is of course that almost everyone holidayed at home this year, as oppose to jetting off to the Med, or wherever.

Finally, just when you thought the hop industry was becoming over-comercialised, here’s a great story about Little Toad Creek Brew-ery in Silver City, New Mexico and their use of foraged wild hops.

Docks Beers, The Church, King Edward St, Grimsby DN31 3JD

Docks Beers are found in an impressive converted church not far from Grimsby’s historic docks. The taproom is situated within the same building as the brewery, overlooking it and granting great views of the fermentation vessels.

Space is not really an issue at Docks Beers as it has a large downstairs section, and outside area, as well as a huge area upstairs known as Docks Academy, which is open when not being used to stage events.

Both floors boast 12 keg taps and a couple of cask beers, together with a large selection of canned craft beers from around the world. Wines, spirits, ciders and soft drinks are also available.

When I (Steve) visited Docks Beers the keg selection was made up mostly of Docks Beers, together with several beers from Atom Beers from just over the River Humber. A large screen above the downstairs bar shows which beers are available, including those from the fridges.

Brewery Tours are now back on the menu and last about 90 minutes and include a tasting session of 6 different styles of beer.

TAP ROOM REVIEW

19

The taprooms are open 7 days a week from noon until late with 6pm closing on Sundays. At weekends they play host to some of the best street food vendors in the North of England and I can vouch for their high quality.

Docks Academy is used regularly for music and comedy events and is a fantastic venue for this, with its large stage, long bar and spacious floor area. Unfortunately no events were on during my visit but I imagine it would be brilliant to watch live music or a comedian, while drinking top-class beer and enjoying the great food on offer.

All things considered, and even without entertainment, my visit to Docks Beers was memorable and I recommend the experience.

PATREON ANNOUNCEMENT Discover the benefits of membership

When we launched This Week in Craft Beer in January 2020, we were blissfully

unaware of what lay ahead of us! Considering the obstacles, we have all faced, we

are proud of what we managed to accomplish in our first year.

However, we have lots more that we want to do in 2021! In order to fund these

activities and to enable our Community to get more involved with the creative process at TWICB, we have launched a Patreon Membership Programme.

Full details of how you can get involved starting at less than the cost of a half-decent can of beer per

month, can be found at patreon.com/thisweekincraftbeer.

Don't worry, our weekly Newsletter and Podcast will continue to be FREE FOR EVERYONE! The Patreon

Membership offers access to range of brand new TWICB Products and Services. Please check it out and

let us know what you think?!

www.thisweekincraft.beer/patreon

Q. Why are you starting to charge for things that we have enjoyed for free all this year? A. We aren't! The weekly Newsletter and weekly Brewer-interview Podcast will continue to be free to everyone. Patreon will

enable us to offer brand-new additional products and services to Members.

Q. What's this about Members getting involved with TWICB? A. We have been amazed and delighted with the amount of engagement and feedback we have received during our first year, via

social media, email etc. The UK Craft Beer Community is clearly engaged, knowledgeable and sociable! We want to provide a mechanism for bringing the community into our creative process, allowing people to participate in the planning, research,

production and delivery of our products.

Q. Why do you have to charge for things? A. TWICB is run by just two people: Rob and Steve. Whilst it is undoubtedly a labour of love, it has developed into something that

consumes a significant part of our working weeks. Steve works mainly on the Newsletter, where the New Beers Section alone

takes many hours per week, to research, collate and format. Rob works mainly on the podcast, where each episode takes several

hours to schedule, research, record, edit and promote. Whilst we will continue to invest this time to produce the free products, we think Patreon could be a great way of funding the time and effort that we want to devote to developing new products and

services.

Q. Apart from your time, what specifically will the Patreon proceeds be used to fund? A. As soon as the COVID-19 situation permits, we want to take the podcast on the road, to record Brewer interviews at their own

Taprooms, as well as record live segments at Festivals, Tap-Takeovers and other beery events of note. In order to provide a quality

finished audio product, we will need to invest in some decent mobile recording equipment, not to mention the cost of travelling

the length and breadth of Britain in the pursuit of great interviews!

Q. What is the thought process behind the bundles of Patreon Membership bonuses that you are offering? A. We have tried to come up with bundles that combine some community benefits, exclusive digital products, exclusive physical

products, invites to exclusive TWICB events, discounts on TWICB Grand Tours and opportunities to participate in the TWICB

creative process. We have tried to price each Membership Level so that each offers outstanding value for money. We have also

tried to be mindful of the number of Patreon members that we can realistically include in each bonus activity. (Clearly the invite to

participate in the podcast interview or attend the TWICB "Board Meeting" needs to be strictly limited in numbers, or else the bonus

would cease to be "exclusive” and would risk disrupting the actual process itself.)

Q. Are the Membership Benefits and Levels set in stone? A. Of course not! We are literally making this up as we go along currently! We would love to get your feedback on the Levels, the

Benefits, and indeed the very idea of using Patreon in the first place! Please hit us up on IG (@thisweekincraft.beer) or via email [email protected]. We confidently expect to need to adjust the Patreon model as we go along, based on feedback.

Q. Is this like a Gym membership, where I sign up in January, and then regret it for the rest of the year?!

A. Definitely Not! Membership is month-to-month and you can cancel your membership at any time. Only caveat here is that

certain Member Benefits (mainly those ones that involve a significant cost for us to provide to you) are only unlocked after three

or six months at a certain tier.
