Les Vtements - Clothes

Topic: Les Vtements

Grade level: 7

Time: 45 minute lesson

Objective: After completing this lesson, students will have gained knowledge of new vocabulary, which will be used in everyday situations when speaking French. The activities students participate in will build on prior knowledge of grammar concepts while introducing new vocabulary; all activities will remain within a students Zone of Proximal Development.

Overview:

During the warm-up activity, students will use prior knowledge to apply the er verb endings to the verbs we will be using in this lesson.

The grammar focus lesson allows students to build on their French writing skills while reviewing vocab.

The main activity, creating a dialogue, allows students to engage in all six writing strands (listening, speaking, reading, writing, viewing and representing).

Students can perform their skits as a concluding activity. Or, if time permits, the teacher can test students listening skills as they draw in the Extraterrestre avec les Vtements activity.

Opening Activity / Ice Breaker: (5 mins)

Roll the Dice!

Using their pre-made dice, students will roll only the person dice and they will choose to conjugate either porter or acheter

Both acheter and porter are regular er verbs so students should be able to complete this activity within the 5 minute allotted time.

While students are participating in the Roll the Dice activity, the teacher will write the vocab for this unit on the board. The teacher will review each word and its English translation with the students. As an adaptation, this can take the form of Quest-ce quil y a dans le sac dos?

Grammar Focus Lesson (10 mins)

Overview:

Students will complete the booklet Les Vtements by completing the sentence Je porte (clothing article) (colour).

Prior Knowledge Required for this activity:

This grammar activity also serves as a review activity. Students will already know how to describe nouns using colour, and they will also be able to construct a negative sentence e.g. I am not wearing ____.

Activity

Review the following vocabulary by copying this chart onto the board:

Repeated Sentence

Clothing Article

Possible Colour

Je porte.

Je ne porte pas

un t-shirt

bleu

les chaussettes

blanc

un chapeau

brun

une robe

rouge

un pantalon

vert

les chaussures

noir

On each page of the booklet, there will be an article of clothing drawn. On the lines above the article of clothing, students will write if they are wearing that piece of clothing, and what colour that article of clothing is. If they choose, students can colour the pictures.

Example: Je ne porte pas un t-shirt vert.

Example: Je porte les chaussettes gris.

To transition between the activities, the teacher will explain to students they will be using the same sentence structure to create a dialogue using the vocabulary on the board.

Main Activity (25 minutes)

Overview

Students will be constructing mini conversations surrounding visiting a store and buying articles of clothing.

Introduction

Set up a scenario whereby each student has been given a $200 gift card to a clothing store. Ask students to brainstorm a list of the clothing they would like to buy with their gift card.

Main Activity

Ask students to find a partner and share their list. With their partner, students will create a dialogue surrounding buying coloured garments in a store. Students can choose to either both be shoppers or one student can be shopping and the other can be a store associate.

Review the following example dialogues with students:

Example dialogue for store associate:

Bonjour, bienvenue cette magasin!

Salut! Jaime ce magasin! Je trouve des vtements parce que jai une carte cadeau.

Ah, fantastique! Quest que ce vous aimez acheter?

Je voudrais acheter deux pantalons, deux t-shirts et les chaussures. Jaime le jean bleu et les t-shirts noir et pourpre.

Excellent, quest que vous aimez cette jean?

Oui! Jadore le jean! Merci beaucoup!

Example dialogue for two people shopping:

Jaime cette magasin. Tu achete ici?

Oui, hier jai achet une robe. Aujourdhui je voudrais acheter les vtements pour mes pieds; je trouve les chaussettes et les chaussures.

Quelle couleur chaussures?

Je pense les chaussures noir ou blanc. Jaime les chaussures blanc.

Quest que vous aimez ces chaussures?

Non, je naime pas ces chaussures? Mais, jaime les chaussures ici. Je pense que je vais les achet.

The teacher will separate the class into 3 groups and each pair will perform their dialogue to their group.

This strategy will make it difficult for the teacher to assess each student. However, I believe the audience will be more engaged when only listening to 3-4 dialogues rather than 10-12.

This is also an opportunity for peer-assessment.

Students will hand in their dialogues to the teacher for assessment purposes.

Students can either perform their dialogues to the class or, to review the vocab and act as an exit slip, the teacher can lead students through the following activity.

Closure / Culminating Activity (5 mins)

Extraterrestre avec les Vtements

Each student has a blank piece of paper and a variety of coloured markers. The teacher will call out an article of clothing and a colour and the students have to draw the article of clothing on their alien.

Assessment

To assess written skills, the teacher will collect both the Les Vtements booklet and the students written copies of the dialogues.

In the booklet, the teacher will assess for correct grammar through sentence formation as well as checking for masculine/feminine and spelling.

In the dialogue, students will be assessed on flow, clarity and including a variety of vocab.

The teacher will assess for pronunciation and verbal fluency during the performance of the dialogue.

Students will be continually practicing vocabulary throughout the unit. Students comprehension will be tested in a vocab test at the end of the unit.

Note: It is important that the teacher assess students in terms of individual improvement rather than against other students.

Follow-up / Extension Activities

The dice from the warm-up activity can be repeatedly used throughout the year.

The teacher may like to collect the extraterrestre papers and place them on a board in the classroom, or around the room. When students return to the classroom, after lunch or the next day, they can participate in a walk around the room; this may include placing post-it notes of positive comments about their peers work. This would be a great community building activity and a chance for students to see the different pictures.

Adaptations

If students particularly enjoy performing, the Extraterrestre avec les Vtements activity can be left out and students can enjoy performing and listening to the work they have already created.
