    The Ear of Wheat

I had only an ear of wheat

In good soil I planted it

With full hands I harvestedThen to the mill I took it

    The flour sold at market

    A large profit brought me

A nice suit I orderedThe kings daughter looked at me

The king made me his advisor

    A large estate

he gave to meHere is how one ear of wheat

    With honors and wealth

    showered me

    Be Blessed

Be blessed people of the kitchen

We owe our happiness to you

And if ever love catches me

A cordon-bleucook will have my heart

From south to north, up to Milan, that was far.Hed looked at the map.eight-hundred eighty-eight km.That would take them a good ten hours by train,

lets say twelve hours because this was Italy.Come on, twelve hours on a train, thatsnot catastrophic.Maybe they could sleep a littleby leaning against each other.

Thats what theyd done on the way down amonth agowhen the train was full.Theyd sat on their bag in the hallway.Theyd smiled at the soldiers in uniform

and at the ladies who were wearing scarveson their headsand whod offered them salami. And then theyd fallen asleepin the middle of the noise and smells.

It was only the beginning for the ladies in thescarves and for the soldiers,But Milan for her, that was already far from Paris, and for him, the American, lets not talkabout it.

Since it was the end of summer, they expected that there would be people onthe train. All these young people really had to

go home, still. On the platform there were now someGermans, English, DutchFrench like her, Greeks going to visit Italy,Spaniards, Belgians, and even a few Italians,

Austrians and Swedes maybe, but no Americans. He was glad to be the only one, actually. And then, the train arrived. And there, really, they asked themselves

if they were dreaming.Making their way toward the doors withtheir bag, they and all the other travelers were tellingthemselves at the same time

the same thing but in many different languages. But thats impossible, thats crazy!

Did you see that? Thats unbelievable!

888 km from here to Milan ...

    Thats going to be hell!

The train was already so filled, booked, stuffed to bursting

that they had to push each other, pull each other,

in order to finally manage to get on

just before the doors shut behind them,

leaving on the platform a few too-shyyoung women.

Their bags still on their backs, stuck, blocked, compressed,

they looked at each other over other backpacks.

There were people everywhere, standing, packed like sardines,

in each square centimeter of each corridor ofthat train.

They felt like laughing because it was funnyand at the same time

    really not fun to think

that if it went on like that

one wouldnt be able to sit before Milan.Everyone was telling themselves the samething, apparently.

One was wondering how one was going toget back

And then, the conductor appeared, as ifby magic,

in his uniform, under his cap, behind hisjovial mustache.

How had he managed to make his way

between these hundreds of travelers?A mystery.

When he arrived in front of them,

They handed him their passports at thesame time.

He his, the blue one, the American one.

He looked at both of them,

at her and him, and then at the ticketsand passports.

He smiled and he asked them somethingin Italian.

    She wasnt sure shed understood

but she had a feeling that it was important.

    Insieme?She took a chance.

    She answered yes, in Italian.

    They were indeed together.

Then he explained to them that they shouldget off at the following station ...

    Capite? Capisci?

She understood, yes, at the following station.

That they should wait for an hour ...

She explained what shed understood, orthought shed understood.

He was asking her, Youre sure, thats reallywhat he said?

She wasnt 100% sure, but she had faith.

He said, OK, were getting off, well see.

She answered that in any case it was thator die of asphyxia and paralysis so why not?

When the train stopped at an empty stationthat they hadnt seen on the map,

they got off, crossing their fingers.

    They looked around them.

    There were four of them.

She and he and, further on the platform, twoother students
