grading

School Profile - 2018-19

In the French system, grading is based on a 0 to 20 point scale. The moyenne is the average of a stu-dent in each subject or in general, and it depends on the grades of the students and the coefficient or weighting of the subjects. The coefficient relates to the relative importance of each subject in the track and it is different from one track to another. There is no grade inflation and the entire scale is used. Not calculated on a percentage basis, a 12/20 is an ho-nourable grade (a B+) and an overall result of 15 is attained only by outstanding candidates. A 16/20 or 17/20 is rare, and a 20/20 is virtually unattainable. The evaluation of students in all subjects takes into account all aspects of the student’s response in at-tributing a grade: reasoning, form and presentation, and written expression. The Lycée Français Toronto neither calculates nor publishes class rankings.

the French baccalauréatThe French Baccalauréat, also known as the BAC, is the French national qualification exam. It is ad-ministered at the end of May and beginning of June. Most examinations are held at the end of grade 12, with the exception of French Literature and TPE (independent research project), which takes place at the end of grade 11. A typical BAC exam lasts for 3-4 hours and it includes material they have learnt from grade 11 and 12. All exams are written, except for the language subjects (French, English, OIB English, German, Spanish, Italian and Mandarin) and OIB History-Geography where there are both written and oral components.

The BAC exam is also graded on a 0 to 20 points scale. A 10/20 or higher is a passing grade. A 12 to 13.99 qualifies as Mention Assez Bien (Honours), 14 to 15.99 qualifies as Mention Bien (High Ho-nours), and 16 or higher qualifies as Mention Très Bien (Highest Honours). The Baccalauréat diploma earns transfer credits as much as a full year in many North American universities.

The Baccalauréat diploma earns transfer credits as much as a full year in many North American universities.

Where France meets Canada

Based on the French curriculum, our innovative pedagogical approach goes beyond the Ministry’s recommendations and places special emphasis on languages, sciences and sports. With a complete mastery of three to four languages in Grade 12 and The recognition of the French Baccalauréat, our students integrate well into the leading North American and European universities Such as Harvard, University Of Toronto, McGill University, Columbia, Dauphine and SciencesPo.

Steeped in Canadian culture where sports, volunteer work and extracurricular activities are vehicles for integration and well-being, our students develop their social and intellectual skills in a civic and multicultural environment. With a wealth of 550 students, 400 families, 85 teachers and administrative support from more than 30 different nationalities, our community is united, respectful and caring. The values of fraternity, equality and living together are at the heart of our identity and teaching philosophy.

our facultyThe teaching staff for the French Baccalauréat program is composed of accredited teachers hired directly from France. The native language of these teachers is French. The English classes are taught by accredited Canadian teachers, and other languages primarily by native speakers.

• Accreditation by the French Ministry of Edu-cation certifies that the teaching provided by the school complies with the demands, cur-ricula, teaching objectives and organizational rules of the French Ministry Education system. All students from accredited schools can pur-sue their education in another French school

without having to take an entry examination.

• Schools are required to periodically prove

that they meet accreditation criteria (accep-tance of both French and foreign nationals, preparation for French examinations and em-ployment of qualified French staff).

LanguagesStudents graduate with fluency in at least 2 languages, with most fluent in 3 or 4. All students begin studying a third language in the 6th grade. Students also have the additional option of stu-dying a fourth language. Language lear-ning at the LFT is in line with the Com-mon European Framework of reference for Languages (CEFr) and the students can take the following language certifi-cation exams based on their level: DELE in Spanish, ZD in German, CILS in Italian and HSK in Mandarin.

course loadEXtrACurriCuLAr ACtiVitiES

During the final three years of secondary education,

students often carry a course load of 40 hours per

week, with a corresponding amount of homework.

The LFT still offers extracurricular activities at the

high school level such as rugby, soccer and arts. Stu-

dents also take part in field trips (Model UN in New-

York, language exchanges in Barcelona and China).

The OIB (International Option of the

French BAC) is an enriched curriculum

open to students in all tracks with the aim

of promoting a fully bilingual and bicultu-

ral education. The program consists of ad-

vanced-level studies in English and an in-

tegrated History-Geography course taught

by French and Canadian faculty. The OIB

is not a separate diploma, but rather a

specialization within the framework of the

French Baccalauréat; the OIB is not the

International Baccalaureate (IB). Students

take the OIB during Grades 11 and 12 and

must be fully bilingual. The OIB is the most

challenging option a student can take. LFT

is the only school in Toronto to offer the

French Baccalauréat and the only school in

Canada to offer the OIB.
