Woolah. Kaya wanjoo Fremantle Festival ngany djiripin ngalak doyintj-doyintj yoowarl koorl waabiny wer djerp-djerp.
Wow... what a festival we have in store this year. Flicking through the draft festival schedule on my desk a few weeks ago I was flabbergasted
by the quantity, quality and variety of this year’s Fremantle Festival program. And as you look through it now I am sure you will be too!
Of particular note, and after a break of some thirty five years, I am very pleased and proud to see the historic Blessing of the Fleet ceremony opening this year’s festival. Coupled with the all new Seafood Festival at Fishing Boat Harbour and a spectacular opening fireworks display the opening day of this year’s Fremantle Festival will be one not to miss.
The last few years have seen the Fremantle Festival go from strength to strength, building on over a century of tradition while at the same time continuing to add modem components and flare. A robust festival is a sign of a robust City and this festival is certainly robust and brimming with lots of things to do and see, much of it drawn from the local community and highlighting what an extraordinary community Fremantle is. With over 90 events to choose from this year, you will be spoilt for choice.
A major highlight for me this year is the staging of the fabulous French Ariel Dance Company Retouramont.
Their performances of “Cette Immense Intimite” on the Wall of Craig Mostyn House in Leak Street is truly the must-see event of this festival, and an Australian Premiere to boot!
I am also really looking forward to Wardarngi at the Fremantle Arts Centre and have already been brushing up on my Nyoongar. I will also be at the Norfolk Lanes Youth Festival, the Children’s Fiesta, and of course the closing parade where you never know what you might see. There is everything from the funny and ridiculous to the noisy and the controversial.
And let’s not forget the Cappuccino Strip! Newly renovated, it will play host to the annual Coffee Festival. Cafes, restaurants and bars will be spilling out onto the street in celebration of all things coffee. Coffee roasters from across the state will be tempting you with their samples, and there will be a smorgasbord of entertainment on the street including the famous Gino’s Spaghetti eating contest!
There are so many highlights in this year’s festival it is impossible to mention them all. So I suggest you sit down at one of the city’s famous cafes, order you favourite brew and have a browse through this program to start planning your festival itinerary.
I look forward to another huge crowd this year for what promises to again be the highlight of the City of Fremantle’s 2012 event calendar.

When the skies above the Fishing Boat Harbour are ablaze with colour, it will be the perfect conclusion to a day marking the true joys of Fremantle living. The ceremony of the Blessing of the Fleet launched the Festival but night time brings its own theatricality as families gather for the brilliant display of exploding light and colour to conclude the opening celebrations.

The Amani Consort were crowd favourites at Hidden Treasures in July. Fronted by MC Amani with her velvety voice and unmistakable style, The Amani Consort features an All Star line up of Perth’s most talented musicians, featuring Alex Borthwick (The Crux) on guitar, Troy Gannoe (Zarm) on bass, Gordan Cant (Tina Turner- yes that’s right!) on keys and Bronton Ainsworth on drums, together the band manages to find the perfect ratio of abandon and restraint, transforming any song they play. The Amani Consort draws influence from the likes of The Roots and Erykah Badu whilst creating a new progressive jazz funk sound. With Samson Park as an incredible backdrop, this performance by the Amani Consort will not be one to miss.

The Fremantle Street Parade is the finale of fifteen eclectic days of art, culture and celebration. This decades-old Fremantle tradition sees pedestrians reclaiming the streets with passion, colour and noise as up to 60 parade entries and floats make their way through the heart of the city. It’s fun, loud and sometimes controversial but the parade always brings to the fore the energy, vitality and diversity that make Fremantle a truly unique city!

The City of Fremantle will soon be implementing a number of initiatives to make it much easier for you to find your way around our great city centre. • Branding our key tourism precincts Cappuccino Strip,
City Central, Fishing Boat Harbour, Victoria Quay and the West End.
• Identifying our precincts and tourist attractions with new CBD road traffic signage that will help get you quickly and easily to exactly where you want to go.
• Introducing real time car park availability signage for the Queensgate, Collie Street and Parry Street car parks and key entrance points into the city centre.
• A Fremantle parking app.
