Preliminary

Why Optical Data Archive?

Industry Requirement(Storing Critical & Valuable Data Safely for Long Periods)

Low Cost (TCO)

"freeze-ray" is designed and validated to meet large scale data center and enterprise market specific needs.

Adoption of optical media enables storage of critical & valuable data safely for a long period with data integrity.

It is an immutable and low cost solution to meet cold data archive needs.

Panasonic developed “freeze-ray” in collaboration with Facebook.

Panasonic contributed its high-density optical technology, key devices and library software to control the system easily in data centers.

Facebook collaborated by providing its unmatched expertise in designing, deploying, managing and servicing storage systems in data centers. In addition, Facebook provided extensive technical and real-world data center feedback at every stage of the development.

Both companies plan to continue to collaborate in order to provide even greater benefits to the data center industry.

Product Outline Product Specifications

Meeting the need for ever-increasing data volume

• By adopting the 100-GB Blu-ray Disc, the system capacity is 547.2 TB per standard 19" rack.• By adopting the 300-GB Archival Disc, the system capacity is 1,641.6 TB* (1.6 PB) per standard 19" rack. *Optional range: 547.2 TB - 1,915.2 TB

* Tentative Design

* Image of a larger scale system

Library software ready to control the system easily in data centers• Conforms to MMC and SMC standards.• The library software that is installed in the server enables direct access to optical disc drives and robotics.

• Utilizes WORM (Write Once Read Many) and contactless optical discs.• The lifetime of Panasonic optical Archival Discs is estimated to be 100 years or more based on accelerated tests being conducted at a temperature of 30˚C and humidity of 70% RH.• Investment protection can be secured as the optical disc is backward compatible (no obsolescence) and no future data migration is needed. - CAPEX• Significantly reduces energy costs due to its low power operation capability (standby power is zero) and its tolerance to environmental changes (no air conditioning required). - OPEX

Achieving an ideal, low-cost (TCO) data archiver

• Maintains system availability.• Ensures serviceability for data center technicians• Matches data center environmental conditions• Designed to function under transportation shock and vibration conditions• Optional 19-inch rack mountable Server Bay available

Meets the specific design requirements of data centers

Base Module & Expansion Module with Drive BayEach module is equipped with 3 optical drives to read/write data. A pair of modules can read/write to a total 6 optical discs on both sides simultaneously. The transfer speed in a pair of modules (6 drives) reaches 360 MB/s. A maximum of 3 pairs of drive bays can be installed to a system rack.* When 300-GB discs are used.

Drawer & MagazineDetachable drawer which allows easy magazine exchanges. Each magazine is equipped with 12 optical discs.

Server BayOptional 19 inch rack mountable server bay that is OCP server (not included)/OCP power supply unit (not included) mountable or the customer can bring their own gear without using the server bay.

Bottom ModuleMagazine carrier elevates and transfers each magazine with 12 discs to the drive bay.

Expansion ModuleEach module consists of 76 magazines (273.6 TB). With 6 modules, the system capacity is 1,641.6 TB (1.6 PB). The optional capacity range extends from 2 modules (547.2 TB) to 7 modules (1,915.2 TB).* When 300-GB discs are used.

2016 Future

The first-generation of freeze-ray for data centers has been based on the 100-GB Blu-ray Disc, and the second-generation based on the 300-GB Archival Disc will be released in 2016. Panasonic plans to further expand the recording capacity per disc to 500 GB and 1 TB in the near future.
