The Canal du Nivernais

Burgundy

Vermenton may not be a familiar French named town to you. Do not let that worry you - its role

and position in the canal structure is all important and it enjoys an idyllic position a few hundred

metres off the main line of the Canal du Nivernais. This is thought by many to be the most

beautiful canal in France. There is cruising in all directions from this British family-owned and

managed base. A wide selection of boats in each class is available, so there’s every chance that

you will be able to book your first choice unless you leave it too late.

Recently the local authorities have adopted the tow path as a tourist cycling track - no vehicles,

and this has added to the attraction. Vermenton is also easily accessible for self drive via English

/ French ports. About 4 ½ hours easy driving, most of it on uncrowded motorways. Or via train

from Paris if you prefer. Please see our travel guide on pages 28 - 29 for further details.

It’s difficult to decide on the chief attractions of Burgundy as there are so many. Much will depend

on your personal choice. For some it may be the architecture and history shaped by the Romans

and the many châteaux built by warring armies and left as a legacy that can be enjoyed today. Its

location at the centre of France made Burgundy a hub for transport routes throughout the ages -

hence the canals.

Here food and wine are legendary and a whole holiday could be planned purely around this.

Whether you are sailing from Vermenton or from our new base in St Florentin (see next page),

Dijon can provide a wonderful pre or post holiday addition - don’t miss out!

Our base at Capestang is on the Grand Bief - a 54kmlock-free stretch of canal

A short stay at a lock

Many think the Canal du Midi is the best in France. But what is best? It is certainly the most dramaticlinking the Mediterranean Sea near Sète with theAtlantic Ocean west of Bordeaux. Many yachts andmotorboats traverse the entire length of the canal ona passage to or from the Mediterranean. Howeverthis journey is far too long a distance for a holiday.

So from our base in Capestang we concentrate onthe most scenic sections of the canal. You haveCastelnaudary and Carcassonne to the west, orCarnon and Sète to the east. It is Capestang whereyou start and finish your holiday. It is situated roughlyequidistant between the extremes of the stretch ofthe Midi that we cover, offering you several choicesof itinerary.

These routes cover some of the main features of thecanal and you pass through such places as Homps,Carcassonne, Béziers and Castelnaudary. There isalso a junction of the canal (canal de la Robine)which takes you to Narbonne. To the east you havethe towns of Béziers, Agde and the Etang du Thau, all featuring en route to Carnon.

The Canal du Midi was designed by the renownedcanal architect and engineer Paul Riquet, and it can now boast UNESCO world heritage status.

If you cannot make up your mind which route to takethen we highly recommend the canal de la Robine. This descends through Narbonne to theMediterranean coast at Port-la-Nouvelle. This excursion from the main stretch of canal is not to bemissed! Narbonne is an attractive town with plenty of facilities. You can moor in the centre of the townfor a day or two and enjoy its surrounds. Continuefurther south from the centre of Narbonne towardsthe coast. There are no locks along this 12 milestretch of canal as you reach the sea, and thebeach! A superb week’s itinerary.

By Ferry / Road

It is a long drive across France to get to our base at Capestang. We strongly advise that you make “the journey” part of the holiday and enjoy the towns and locations you pass en route. Even if you were to drive non-stop the journey from your chosen port to Capestang would take approximately 9 hours. With such a long drive the French port you choose to arrive at isn’t as important. However we recommend the following:

• Portsmouth > Le Havre (approx 3 ½ hours)• Portsmouth > Caen (approx 3 hours)• Portsmouth > Cherbourg (approx 3 hours)• Portsmouth > St Malo (approx 4 ½ hours)

By Rail

The train offers a comfortable and fast way of traversing France. We recommend that you travel to Montpellier.

• London St. Pancras > Paris Gare du Nord (approx 2 ½ hours)• Take the Metro from Gare du Nord > Paris Gare de Lyon

• Take the TGV from Gare de Lyon > Montpellier (approx 4 hours)• Trains are also available to Toulouse

By Air

Béziers is the nearest airport being just 10 miles from our base in Capestang. Montpellier and Carcassonne are other options available.

• Luton > Béziers (approx 2 hours)• Bristol > Béziers (approx 1 ¾ hours)• Gatwick > Montpellier (approx 1 ¾ hours)• Stansted > Carcassonne (approx 2 hours)• Glasgow > Carcassonne (approx 3 hours)• Leeds / Bradford > Carcassonne (approx 2 ½ hours)

PLACES OF INTEREST / FACILITIES

There are 3 routes you can choose along the Canal duMidi. West of Capestang will take you to the historic townsof Castelnaudary and Carcassonne. Carcassonne in particular features the stunning backdrop of la Cité deCarcassonne. This fortress contains some of the bestmedieval architecture in Europe with some parts datingback to the 5th century.

Heading east of Capestang you’ll find the towns ofBéziers, Sète and Carnon, as well as the wonder that isthe Étang de Thau - France’s second largest lake. Thelake is separated from the Mediterranean by a narrowstretch of sand. This area is surrounded by pretty coastaltowns all of which rely heavily on fishing. Needless to saythe seafood restaurants are very good.

The town of Agde is one of the many towns you will passthrough. Originally a prosperous Greek trading port, Agdeis one of the oldest towns in France. Many of its buildingsare built in dark volcanic rock and are well worth seeing,as is the Agde museum.

Finally, heading South West you cruise in to the splendidtown of Narbonne. The entrance via the canals is spectacular. After passing the first lock you pass under theMerchant’s Bridge, one of the few bridges left in Francewhich is lined with houses. After passing under severalmore fine bridges you will be inside the town centre. Narbonne was once the leading Roman colonyoutside Italy. Sadly the only Roman building left intact isthe “Horreum” near the centre. However, several finemosaics and artefacts have been restored and can befound at the Archbishop’s Palace.

The Canal du Midi has also invested in restoring its tow-paths. Long stretches of towpath from Carcassonne toTrèbes and Béziers to Agde now offer safe cycle routes - a perfect way to explore the localities.

CharenteThe River Charente does not interconnect with the Brittanywaterways but this is still a delightful area bordered by rollinghills, graceful plains and vibrant countryside. The area is situated to the south of La Rochelle a much favoured yachtingcentre and close to the Ile de Ré which is well worth exploringwhen en route to the base in Sireuil.

The base of Sireuil is east of Cognac and west of Angoulême, adelightful town of wonderful character and architecture. Thiswaterway warrants careful consideration by those who wish tocombine a week’s relaxed touring with a week’s boating. Asuperb combination in an uncrowded region.

Cognac of course needs little introduction. You may know this‘digestif’ more commonly as brandy and most visitors will find avisit to the distilleries within the town an irresistible attraction - perhaps more than one visit?!

Choosing the rightBoat

Having chosen a canal holidayin France, you must nowdecide which boat is right for you.

This is the most important decision and size matters. Do not try to squeeze too many peopleinto too small a space - you will regret it. Butspace costs money so that is an issue. Our bestadvice is to book what you can afford. A closefamily may not need as much individual spaceas comparative strangers. This applies particularly to shower, bathroom and toiletareas, similarly sleeping areas. Study our boatlayouts carefully and you should then be able to decide exactly what is right for you and yourfamily and friends. If you’re still in doubt, call us - we’re more than happy to help.

The sleeping arrangements are possibly themost important item to consider when makingyour final boat selection. You will note that the“sleeps” and “comfort” numbers are different.

“Sleeps” denotes the total capacity of the boat. This means that as well as the total number ofpermanent beds that are available, additionalpeople can sleep on bunks or convertible sofas.“In Comfort” is the total number of permanentbeds. This figure includes both single and double beds.

Before making your final choice you have toconsider whether any members of your party wish to have permanent beds or convertible sleeping arrangements.

Each boat category has a number of anchors next to each title. This is our way of quickly indicating the quality of interior and comfort. This is by no means a definitive indication ofboat, but rest assured if the boat class you havechosen has 5 anchors then you have chosen the highest class of vessel possible.

Each boat type listing shows which boat basethe vessel is available from. On occasions, if aprevious hirer has chosen a one way journeyyour boat may be available from an alternativebase. In road distance this will be very short andwe will be able to advise you not less than 10days before your departure.

Remember if you have any queries about whichboat to hire then do not hesitate to contact usat Freewheel Afloat.

DiscountsDiscounts are available: 5% off second week of hire; 10% off third week of hire. 21 days ormore discount by agreement - please call us.

Start and Finish TimesMost bases offer Friday, Saturday or Monday start and finish days. Please discuss with us atthe time of booking. Pick up time is after 1500 and return should be by 0900 on the finalday.

Boat HandlingI/we haven't handled a boat before - how much experience do we need? Little or none is theeasy response. It's not difficult even for total beginners. However a minimal level of physicalfitness is required to get on and off the boat. Hundreds perhaps thousands do it each year.If you can drive a car you should have no problem. One word of advice however. The biggestboat may benefit from an extra pair of hands or two if only for help at locks and mooring.

Sadly there is now virtually no commercial traffic on French Waterways so you won't meet 30metre commercial leviathans. Should you do so give way and keep out of the way. Get thecamera out! You are insured. Behave responsibly and enjoy!

Lock HandlingDo not be deterred by locks - they are part of the experience and enjoyment and help toinvolve all onboard. They are an opportunity to meet people (lock keepers and other boaters)and a chance to buy produce. Take a little while to understand their operation. Where possible we will demonstrate lock operation when you take over the boat. Locks are eithermanned or automatic which means passing through them is not a chore.

2nd Steering PositionA second steering position is an important consideration. With a second, exterior positionthere is better vision, and everyone can be together outside enjoying the sun and scenery.

Safety Afloat Your boat is built and assembled to exacting international standards. All boats comply withcertain compulsory design features notably for gas systems, ventilation etc. Also other features specified by French regulations. Additionally there are first aid boxes, life jackets ofappropriate sizes and a rescue life buoy. Life jackets should be worn by poor or non swimmers and you may wish to determine your own policy for children and at locks.

Fuel, Water and GasYou will have sufficient fuel on board for the engine needs unless you are out for more than2 weeks. Gas also unless you are a heavy user, in which case if can be replenished en route.Water may need replenishing each two days or so dependent on consumption. All canal sidewater is drinkable unless labelled "non potable".

CookingHow much cooking do you intend to do? Probably not a lot. Remember there is a host of restaurants available for you to choose from near to the canals. You may live on salad andenjoy the wonderful French markets whether for vegetables, meats, fish, fruit or cheese. Thismay determine how much time you will spend in the galley and in turn that may help influ-ence your choice of boat ie. size of the galley and equipment.

Eating and Drinking AfloatYes and Yes is the answer! You will decide whether to eat ashore or not. Most people lunchon board the boat and dine ashore but it doesn't matter. Just in case you arrive somewherewithout a restaurant, keep sufficient supplies on board in your refrigerator.

Insurance, Security and Cleaning DepositsWhen you take over your boat at our base there are a few formalities. Firstly, we provide a thorough demonstration of the boat and its systems. Secondly there is some paperwork tobe completed and signed. We issue you with a licence for the French Canals. This is a formality for which you need no qualifications. A refundable security deposit is payableagainst damage to the boat and its equipment - see page 27 for details. Alternatively a collision damage waiver policy can be taken out at the base to cover this risk of damage. The charge for this is approximately 10% of the security deposit but it is non-refundable.

All deposits are to be paid in full in euros at the base on your arrival. We make a depositcharge against cleaning of the boat at the end of your holiday (between 80 and 150 eurosaccording to size of boat). This is to cover us against the need for our staff to undertakeexceptional work. If you leave it clean and tidy this deposit is returned in full.
