Manistee County Council on Aging Issue: September 2021 By Sarah Howard Executive Director Did you know September is National Senior Center Month? Since 1971, the Manistee County Council on Aging/Senior Center has made improving the lives of older adults our passion and our mission. We were the first local county organization focused on older adults and their concerns. MCCOA serves the senior citizens of Manistee County by promoting qual- ity of life and independence by addressing their unique needs and challenges. Since 1971 we have walked beside generations of older adults to help them be engaged in an organization that serves their needs.Aging, it’s everyone’s future. Stay active, stay informed and stay involved. I think it’s crazy that the Manistee County Council on Aging has been around for 50 years. I think it is so important to be available to older adults and help them age in place and stay in their own homes for as long as they can. We are still working on senior housing at the Wagoner Community Center prop- erty and feel very passionate that the housing will help our older adults and our community. The housing market is out of control and there seems to be a lack of affordable housing for younger people. So, this housing will help older adults downsize and move into beautiful, new, accessible housing. We have a lot of activities, programs and fun headed your way for September. We have Wheelin’ & Dealin’ with Johnny O coming our way on September 10, 2021. Johnny O’ (aka John O’Hagan) and his family work all year long to collect all of the great prizes and some pretty silly ZONKs. I love seeing what every- one dresses up as and how silly they become during this game show. If you have seen “Let’s Make A Deal” then you know how it is played. We will be ready to see what is in your pockets and purses on the day of the show. We also will be hosting a Flu Shot Clinic on Monday,September 20th. The staff from Rite Aid will be at the Wagoner Community Center and they will be bringing plenty of the senior dose, so we can all be ready to fight off that nasty flu bug. Every other Friday we will have Priscilla in who is a therapist with NWMHS. If you would like to take care of your mental health, you can make an appointment with her and you can speak with a specialist. Because of the pan- demic, I think a lot of us could use an impartial ear,it sure couldn’t hurt. We have another painting class with Joann. I am always so happy when I see what everyone painted. They are always so beautiful, they all look like masterpieces. The Senior Nutrition Program/ Meals on Wheels is going very well. Now that the meals are back in our building, I may need to be restricted from the food. Everything that I have tried is delicious and boy o boy, I can’t believe the portions. I heard from a little lady the other day that she is very happy with the meals and she never goes home without a full tummy. September Birthday Babies, we are going to start celebrating birthdays again. We will have a cake to celebrate on Friday,September 24th right after lunch. Please come and celebrate your birthday with all of us. You never know what surprises we may have up our sleeves. I hope you have a great month and you try something new! August at the Senior CenterThings are hopping at the senior center. But as you can see, our sheriff, Brian Gutowski stops

in occasionally to keep an eye on us.. Actually he came to call bingo. We’re having a good time, wish-ing you were here to join us. Maybe next week? Meanwhile our volunteers have come back and we couldn’t be happier. Their assistance helps us keep this place running smoothly. Thanks to all of you.
