It’s finally underway!Earlier this year, Avon Avenue closed at the CSX railroad tracks for construction of the bridge over the tracks and the adjacent roundabout. Preliminary work started in summer 2016, but major construction is now underway. You can still access Frost Bite, Hackelman Auto Collision, American Electric, NAPA Auto Parts, and Sun Spot from Avon Avenue south of U.S. 36. The new bridge should be open for traffic by early summer 2018.

SPRING 2017

If you’ve noticed a lot of new pavement around town this year, there’s good reason. Between 2016 and 2017, Avon is spending $4.2 million on road paving projects. That’s a $3.4 million increase over the $800,000 we normally budget over two years.

The best part is that we’re doing it without raising your tax rates. Part of the money came from a $1 million additional state distribution of income taxes, $1 million from the State Road 267

relinquishment agreement and an additional amount was freed up when we were able to receive a $1 million Community Crossing grant for the Avon Avenue bridge project. The paving is a key part of our $100 million Go!Avon

infrastructure plan.

Last year, we repaved Avon Avenue, most of County Road 625 East, large

portions of 100 North, and parts of 200 North near Ronald Reagan Parkway. This year, most of our

work will be on neighborhood streets. Our budget focus is on preventive maintenance to keep our roads in good shape, and using extra funds like those from the state to address roads

that need extra attention.

Part of a nationwide surveyWE WANT YOUR OPINIONWhat do you love about Avon? How do you feel about the community’s resources? Does local government serve your needs? What would you improve?

Asking questions like that will help local leaders continue to improve the quality of life in our community. That’s why Avon is participating in the National Citizen Survey for the very first time. We’ve asked the National Research Center to conduct a scientific survey of 1,500 households about our town.

You may have received a survey through the mail, and we encourage you to complete and return it. If you haven’t received a survey but want to participate, visit avongov.org after March 24 and click on the link to the survey. All replies are due by April 7.

The National Research Center conducts this annual survey in hundreds of American communities. They’ll compare your opinions of Avon with what residents in other communities think about their hometowns. Local leaders will receive detailed reports in May, giving us valuable information as we plan for the community’s future. We hope you’ll participate!

★★★Support for

our schools

Neighbors YOU SHOULD KNOW

Kerry Tuttle

Ask your neighbors why they brought their families to Avon, and they’ll probably mention our community’s outstanding public schools. Making sure teachers and students have the resources they need to thrive is at the center of the Avon Education Foundation’s (AEF) work.

Kerry Tuttle has served as the AEF’s executive director for the past two and a half years. The lifelong Hendricks County resident, husband Jason, and daughter Lexi have called Stratford of Avon home for better than a decade.

AEF supports programs in all 12 Avon schools. “Over the past ten years, our contributions have totaled more than half a million dollars,” Kerry tells us. “This school year alone, we’ll invest more than $100,000 in education programs for Avon students. Our work touches

students with a variety of different academic needs at every grade level.”

Her favorite story concerns a student who entered the AEF-funded Read 180 remediation program as a struggling freshman. “Four years later, the young woman came to her Read 180 teacher with a letter of acceptance to college,” Kerry recalls. “She credited the remediation class and the support of her teacher as the turning points in her success. And this is a program that would have been eliminated without AEF’s support.”

An IU graduate, Kerry also serves on the board of directors for the Indiana Association of Public Education Foundations, is a graduate of Leadership Hendricks County, and is a member of Avon’s Kiwanis Club.

Community CALENDAR

WHAT’S HAPPENING IN AVON?

Dates and times subject to change. Check avongov.org for updates.

Create some shadePlant a tree now, and you’ll enjoy its shade (and oxygen) for many years to come. We’re holding our annual Spring Tree Sale from March 20 through April 21. To see what’s available or to place your order, visit avongov.org or our Facebook page starting March 20.

You may not realize it, but one in five Americans has a diagnosable mental health condition. It isn’t easy to spot emotional problems, so the Campaign to Change Direction has been promoting awareness of the five common signs of emotional suffering. They hope to create a common language that will make it easier for us to help others and care about everyone’s mental well-being (including our own).

If you see these signs in someone you know, the Campaign encourages you to connect, reach out, inspire hope, and offer help. Show compassion and caring, and help the person access resources in the community. As the Campaign says, if everyone is more open and honest about mental health, we can prevent pain and suffering, and those in need will get the help they deserve. Visit changedirection.org to learn more.

The five signs1. PERSONALITY CHANGEThere are sudden or gradual changes in the way that someone typically behaves.

2. AGITATEDThey seem uncharacteristically angry, anxious, agitated, or moody.

3. WITHDRAWALThey withdraw or isolate themselves from other people.

4. POOR SELF-CAREThey stop taking care of themselves and may engage in risky behavior.

5. HOPELESSNESSThey seem overcome with hopelessness and overwhelmed by their circumstances.
