DONATIONS TO FRIENDS OF PARKChilton Friends of the Park received two cheques totalling £1,000 from Chilton and Windlestone Methodist Chapel and Avant Homes.

CHILTON FRIENDS of the Park were delighted to recently receive two donations totalling £1,000, which will enable the group to make fur-ther enhancements to the town’s park.

The dedicated volunteer group was set up in 2013

to raise funds for the reno-vation and refurbishment of the bowling pavilion in the Miners’ Welfare Rec-reation ground in Chilton.

Chilton and Windlestone Methodist’s Chapel, which sadly closed in October last year, kindly donated a cheque for

£500, while Avant Homes, who are currently building a new development in the town, also gave the group a much welcome £500 donation.

Over the past five years the Friends of the Park have secured funding from many sources, both

local and county wide, to preserve and protect the pavilion, which is a signif-icant and much-admired part of Chilton’s heritage.

The group would like to sincerely thank the Chapel and Avant Homes for their much-appreci-ated kindness.

Eat wise to drop a size is the motto of the Wellbeing For Life service

“EAT WISE to drop a size” is the motto of the Wellbe-ing for Life service, which runs a group helping people from the Ferryhill and Chilton area to make lifestyle changes that will improved their health and mental wellbeing.

The group, which has been on-going for around two years, holds free ses-sions at Dean Bank Insti-tute every Wednesday from 4pm-5.30pm.

The group provides advice on how to lose

weight healthily and keep it off by learning about food and nutrition, provid-ing new recipe ideas and having a weekly weigh in.

“It’s also a great oppor-tunity to meet new peo-ple,” said Wellbeing Prac-titioner, Laura Birkin.

bring the boarded up building, next door to Ferryhill Library, “back to life”.

“A building of this era can often lack external appeal,” he added. “As such there is a proposal to upgrade the frontage to include render and clad-ding, this will give a visual and attractive appeal to the building.

“This proposal will see a redundant building brought back into use through the use of much needed quality homes.”

The statement also

noted that the building needs significant internal work but that it is robust and worthy of retention.

The proposal includes installing new windows, better insulation and new heating in order to make it more energy efficient and to expand the car park from six to 16 places by demolishing a single sto-rey section of the home.

Durham County Council-lors Joe Makepeace, Peter Atkinson and Brian Avery have welcomed the plan. A decision is expected in mid-November.

THE EMPTY Feryemount Residential Home on North Street in Ferryhill is set to be transformed into one- and two-bed-roomed flats if a develop-er’s planning application is accepted.

Wayne Hindmarsh of Stanhope has submitted the application to convert the former care home, which has 29 rooms and communal areas, into 12 apartments.

In his planning state-ment to Durham County Council, Hindmarsh said that his proposal would

MEMBERS OF the pub-lic are being asked to influence how funding is spent in their community in a new consultation.

County Durham’s 14 Area Action Partnerships (AAPs) regularly ask local residents to help them set their priorities for the coming years, so that they can focus their actions and spending on the issues that really mat-ter to local people.

The AAPs, which were set up to give people in County Durham a greater choice and say in local affairs, want to hear from people who live, work, vol-unteer or have an interest in a particular area. Their views will then help to direct the AAPs’ work for up to two years.

Andrew Megginson,

Durham County Coun-cil’s principal area action partnership co-ordinator, said: “Our AAPs work in partnership to ensure that the services of a range of agencies - including our-selves, police, fire, health, and voluntary organisa-tions - are directed to meet the needs of local communities but we need residents to help us identify where the money and resources should be spent first. The responses will also provide us with the opportunity to apply to outside funding bodies to bring more money into the county.”

The last survey, in 2016, received almost 8,000 responses from across the county, including the views of over 3,000 sec-ondary school pupils.

Following this, AAPs allocated over £2.7 mil-lion and helped bring over £2.4 million of matched investment into the county, allowing 825 local projects to be deliv-ered.

Residents have until Friday 30 November to choose their top three themes from a list of ten, including young people, older people, health and wellbeing, community safety and the environ-ment.

POLICE ARE appealing for witnesses after an address in West Corn-forth was burgled.

The incident took place on Salisbury Crescent sometime between July 30th and August 13th, the property was unoccupied at the time of the incident.

The suspect gained entry through a ground floor window and

removed seven radiators, various pipework and a stainless steel kitchen sink before making off in an unknown direction.

Anyone with any CCTV of the area at the time of the incident or finds dis-carded property is asked to contact Durham Con-stabulary on 101 quoting incident number 27 of August 13th.

Families will still need to apply even if they have an older child attending the same school. They must also complete an applica-tion form for older children wishing to attend a junior school from September 2019.

The deadline for appli-cations for primary and junior schools is midnight on Tuesday, 15th January 2019.

The deadline for second-ary school applications is midnight on Wednesday 31st October 2018.

THERE IS still time for members of the public to share their views on the factors that influence a child’s weight in a county-wide consultation.

Residents have until Fri-day 14th September to comment on the Support-ing Children to Achieve and Maintain a Healthy Weight consultation as part of a joint review by Durham County Council and NHS partners.

The consultation, which began in July, is an oppor-tunity for people to tell us what factors they think help children to maintain a healthy weight and ensure overweight youngsters and their families have the support they need.

Rates of overweight and obese children in the

county remain significantly worse than those for Eng-land as a whole, with 24.1 per cent of four to five-year-olds falling into these categories in 2016/17. This is higher than the average for England, 22.6 per cent, and equates to about 1,400 children or 46 classrooms.

Among ten to 11-year-olds, 37.7 per cent were overweight or obese, compared to the England average of 34.2 per cent. This means around 2,000 children aged ten to 11 or 67 classrooms across the county are overweight or obese.

Cllr Lucy Hovvels MBE, Cabinet member for adult and health services, said: “Helping our children to achieve and maintain a healthy weight is a key pri-

ority in County Durham. Children are becoming overweight and obese at younger ages and are staying so for longer. This is concerning as it could continue into adulthood, causing more health prob-lems and impacting on their quality of life.”

For those who would rather do classes just for fun, New Dance Genera-tion are offering a sepa-rate timetable where chil-dren can learn to dance, whilst having fun making new friends.

All dancers will be invited to perform in a Christmas and summer showcase, as well as at

charity events and other performances.
