Formally known as the European Starling this was one of the many species introduced by Cecil John Rhodes and one of the more successful of his introductions. Usually found in small flocks, they can be seen around man made habitation and nest in buildings. Unfortunately they are carriers of lice, so their nesting in one’s home is not very desirable. They are glossy with white flecks and in the right light can be very beautiful. The juveniles are similar to the adults but less glossy. They eat fruit, insects and small animals. They have varied calls, ranging from squawks and whistles to mimicry.

THE REMARKABLE KAROO MEERKATRecently, Glynnis and I were delighted to enjoy a tour of the South African Radio Astronomy Observatory (SARAO) offices in Pinelands. Thank you to fellow Pinelander Richard Lord for arranging and conducting the tour for us. This followed the official inauguration of the MeerKAT radio telescope in the Karoo, earlier this month. MeerKAT is an array of radio receiving dishes which combine to make an extremely sensitive 'telescope'. When the mass of radio signal data collected is processed, it provides detailed images of distant objects in space which conventional optical telescopes cannot see in such detail. MeerKAT is part of a broader project of the Square Kilometre Array (SKA), a multinational project across several continents in which South Africa is a key partner. It is raw science, engineering, information technology and computational science of the highest order. The South African team deserves an accolade for professionally delivering their part of the project with home grown staff and technology. The images already coming from MeerKAT so soon after start-up are of higher quality than ever imagined and are of major interest and importance to the scientific community around the world. Expect to hear much more about this remarkable facility in the coming years.You may wonder why the radio dishes are located in the middle of nowhere in the Karoo. We were told that it is because the receivers are so sensitive that extreme radio silence and freedom from radio interference is needed. Just a single stray radio burst from a passing aircraft or nearby cell phone can burn out a receiver. This is also why every single piece of equipment is individually tested in the labs to ensure it doesn't leak any radio interference before it is allowed on site. The deep Karoo is ideal as it is relatively untouched by the radio pollution that comes from almost every appliance in our towns and cities. Congratulations to Jack Thonissen who is one of the finalists for the Top CA under 35 competition run by the SAICA (South African Institute of Chartered Accountants). Jack is an entrepreneur of note and is using his business talent, and love for sport, to improve the skills of keen hockey players throughout South Africa.

LONG TIME PINELANDS FAMILYJack's Dutch paternal grandparents came to Pinelands in 1958, moving here from Indonesia. Jack's parents Patrick and Diane met when their families lived in Daffodil Way. The family home is now in the Crescent, where Jack grew up with his sister Christine and brother Luke.

FAMILY AND BUSINESSExperiences as a child have influenced Jack's business acumen, since his father, who established a successful tile company, often had client/supplier meetings at home with businessmen from all over the world. Negotiating and networking come naturally to Jack, but he has also learnt a great deal from the usual "hard knocks" that life dishes out - especially on his first independent business venture, where he refused to take no for an answer, and also in his hockey career which had a rocky start when he couldn't make the U16 C hockey team at Pinelands High School.

BUILDING HOCKEY IN SOUTH AFRICAToday Jack is the owner of a retail sports shop, The Hockey/Cricket Shop which he started when completing his Chartered Accountant training contract. Building on that, he is the African wholesaler of the famous Dutch "Princess" hockey brand, and now has a distribution centre in Paarden Eiland - quite different from the beginnings in his parents converted garage! The Princess hockey brand is one of the top

5 in the SA hockey market, and sponsors more than 100 brand ambassadors, both players and coaches nationally. An amazing concept established in South Africa by Jack is the SportsWays hockey coaching clinics. He discovered the success of the professional coaching system used in Holland, and realised how much South African hockey could benefit from them. So far in 2018 the clinics have coached over 2400 players and 350 coaches nationally, and in Zimbabwe and Namibia.

A SPORTING CHALLENGEDetermined to get into a hockey team at school, Jack took the decision to get training from friends Austin Smith (now an Olympian and SA Mens Hockey player based in Holland) and Malcolm Arguile, over the weekends. The tough training resulted in a team position from coach Mike McConnachie, and in Jack's matric year, a place in the WP U18 Pens Provincial Team. "Playing Club Hockey is the best decision I ever made" says Jack and advises all youngsters to join a hockey club and learn from experienced players. Jack has a list of hockey playing achievements as well as an Award for Long Service at the Pinelands Hockey Club. His years on the South African Hockey Executive have given him the opportunity to influence the game from many angles representing SA Hockey players at national meetings, and now he throws his energy into improving the game through the SportsWays coaching clinics.

NEVER STOP STRETCHING YOURSELFNot one for missing a challenge, Jack has now completed four Iron Man 70.3 Competitions - even though he had a trying time mastering the long distance swimming due to a near drowning incident as a young adult. He feels that his swimming fitness will enable him to play league hockey for longer. The Iron man competitions have seen Jack travel to Buffalo City in 2016, Pula Croatia in 2016, Cascais Portugal in 2017 and Buffalo City in 2018.

A CHARITABLE CHALLENGE Jack featured in the Muse in June 2014 when he and some friends cycled "The Forgotten Highway" an old trade route to Kimberley, raising over R90 000 for a Khayelitsha nursery school! Right now Jack's major challenge is managing the logistics of the coaching clinics. He brings 20 Dutch coaches to South Africa, pairs them with 20 SA coaches for clinics at 18 venues nationally and in Zimbabwe and Namibia. More than 300 local volunteer coaches also help at the clinics.

GROWING BUSINESS, GROWING HOCKEYJack is the founder / owner of some indoor hockey franchises in South Africa and hopes to be able to see astroturf at the Pinelands Hockey Club one day. Awards were presented for new and long standing Lions, with Peter Carstens being honoured with the Louis Volks Award, the Lions highest award for his contribution to Lions and the community. “The children now love luxury. They have bad manners, contempt for authority; they show disrespect for elders and love chatter in places of exercise.”

You may know that this quote is attributed to the Greek philosopher, Socrates, who lived well over two thousand years ago.

HAS MUCH CHANGED? Certainly, much has not changed: teenagers have always displayed some or all of the behaviours noted by Socrates. On the other hand, much has changed in the way that young people present themselves, and there are obvious reasons for this. Young people in democratic countries today are growing up in a very different society to that found in ancient Greece. They are faced with a bewildering array of options thrown at them daily (and nightly) by social media, the World Wide Web, peer pressure, schools, changing family structures, the retail world and its powerful marketing, and so much more. They are also growing up in a world where the rights of the individual are paramount, and where difference and diversity are encouraged and celebrated. Add to this mix the complexities of post-Apartheid South Africa and the waves of social and political change that continue to rock our country, and we have a wonderful, scary and challenging backdrop. How can we as parents, teachers and caregivers ensure that we walk strongly and compassionately alongside teenagers through these years of change? Here are some thoughts:

MODERN TEENAGERS NEED TO BE HEARDThey need to understand why boundaries are there, they need moral guidance, and they need love, affirmation and support. In this sense not much has changed, except

that the old paradigm of ‘because I say so’ is no longer effective. The world is showing them that young people have a voice, that they have a right to understand first, before they comply. This makes parenting and teaching particularly challenging, but it does open up opportunities for communication which may not have been there before. It is not always possible to explain every decision or rule, but our attitude towards boundaries and consequences should be shifting as we seek to take young people with us in our thinking, rather than simply imposing something on them. It is a significant change of direction for many of us, but it does reap rewards in terms of our relationships, and teenagers’ willingness to comply.

SCHOOL AND HOME SHOULD SHARE VALUESBecause the world is bombarding teenagers with such a bewildering range of values and options, the home and the school must continue to stand firmly together and be bastions of clear and sound values. Young people need to know that when they put out their hands to steady themselves, there are adults there who hold strong common values – values which are universally accepted as being noble and good: respect, integrity, kindness, courage, compassion and so much more. Sometimes teenagers may not want to engage with these values because there are easier routes. Our task is to show them the right route, hard though it may be. When the school and the home share these values, we all win.

UNCONDITIONAL LOVEAnd finally, unconditional love (which can also be tough love) and strong affirmation from parents, family and teachers will allow the teenager to continue to develop into a whole person with a strong sense of self-worth. There never has been, and there never will be substitutes for these.Parent, teacher, caregiver: the times are challenging, but if we listen with compassion and respect, maintain clear boundaries, role-model sound values, and love and affirm young people, they will be ok.

Husband and wife, Colin and Chelsea Rickman, teachers from Longmont in Colorado paid a visit to Cannons Creek after reading about grey water usage at the school. Colin and Chelsea met with the Principal of the Primary School Mrs Tracy Wahl, visiting some classrooms and being shown the school's Water Management Plan by the school's Estate Manager Mr Wahl. They also met the Founder Principal of Cannons Creek, Mrs Carol Booth. Both Colin and Chelsea were struck by the

similarities in the school systems in the USA where they teach, and schools here. They said that they would be back to visit South Africa as they had been so warmly received by the friendly Capetonians.

Kendrick House Methodist Home for the Aged in Thornton celebrated 50 years of service to the Church and community with a Gala Dinner held on Saturday 16th June. 100 Distinguished guests included the past Bishop of the MCSA Cape District, Rev James Gribble and his wife Jill, the Mission Unit Director of the Cape District, Rev Ralph Afghan and his wife Judy and the leader of the Methodist Homes for the Aged Committee in the Cape District, Rev Michael Lambaatjeen and his wife Shantelle as well as Supernumerary Ministers, Rev. Tony Bethke, Rev. Maurice Fearns, Rev. James Massey and Rev. Merilyn Innes. Also included were representatives from the Cape District and General Executive of the Women’s Auxiliary. Among the guests was Dr Buchinsky who served Kendrick House as the state doctor for many years always available for residents whether they were state pensioners or not.The Manager of the Home, Mrs Judy Simons in her opening address, commented that 16 June is also the day that we commemorate the 1976 Soweto Youth Uprising. "Even the youth of today struggle to make their voices heard just as it is with the elderly who have over the years become the forgotten generation. It is our responsibility to care for our seniors in such a way that we ensure healthy caregivers and mentors for the youth and provide a model of active, supported ageing." The vision and mission statement of Kendrick House is to provide accommodation for the elderly which is affordable and secure and to be an efficient, integrated, caring home for them and their families. Mr Ron Delport, an Anglican lay person, who was Chairperson of the Management Committee in the early days spoke of his experiences as well as Mrs Marlene Damster who had been the Manager of the home for 20 years. Mr Erich Roberts, Chairperson of the present Management Committee opened in prayer and Mrs Vanessa Giesler, Treasurer of the Home, unveiled the plaque commemorating 50 years.In closing Mrs Simons reminded those present of the special service being held on Sunday 26 August at the Home which will be a Service of Blessing followed by tea. Friday the 13th (of July) was a big day for MeerKAT. It was the day that South Africa’s 64-Dish Radio Telescope was officially inaugurated by Deputy President David Mabuza. Back in September 2005, when I started to become involved with the “Karoo Array Telescope” project, I would never have predicted that a mere thirteen years later, South Africa would celebrate such an accomplishment.

HUGE GROWTH AT SARAOBack in 2005 we were a team of about 10 people. Today, the South African Radio Astronomy Observatory (SARAO), which is a National Facility, employs in excess of

300 people. This is testimony of how big the project has become. Maintenance personnel are located at Klerefontein near Carnarvon, the infrastructure team is located in Johannesburg, and the Telescope Operators, Scientists and Engineers are predominantly located in Pinelands. Not everybody at SARAO is involved with the MeerKAT Telescope. Some of the project managers and systems engineers are working on other guest instruments, such as the HERA (Hydrogen Epoch of Reionisation Array) Radio Telescope, which is sharing the Karoo site with MeerKAT. Other resources are dedicated to the design of the international SKA (Square Kilometre Array) Radio Telescope, which is going to be the world’s largest radio telescope.

GENERATES APPROX 275 GBYTES/SECONDBut for now, the limelight belongs to MeerKAT. MeerKAT is a truly South African project, with most of the specialised hardware and associated software being designed and built by engineers at SARAO, in cooperation with industrial partners. Each MeerKAT antenna has a diameter of 13.5 metres, located on baselines (distances between antenna pairs) of up to 8km. The vast amounts of data from the 64 antennas (up to 275 Gbytes per second) are processed in real time by a “correlator”, followed by

a “science processor”, both of which are purpose-built. All of the work of the last ten years has culminated in the inauguration event on Friday the 13th. During this event, a MeerKAT panorama was unveiled that reveals extraordinary detail in the region surrounding the supermassive black hole at the centre of our Milky Way galaxy.

ACCORDING TO DR FERNANDO CAMILO, CHIEF SCIENTIST AT SARAO:“We wanted to show the science capabilities of this new instrument. The centre of the galaxy was an obvious target: unique, visually striking and full of unexplained phenomena – but also notoriously hard to image using radio telescopes. Although it’s early days with MeerKAT, and a lot remains to be optimised, we decided to go for it – and were stunned by the results.”

A PROUD MOMENT FOR SOUTH AFRICATruly, a proud moment for South Africa. Using the words of Prof. Phil Diamond, SKA Director-General: “South Africa and the South African people should be proud: this is a fantastic milestone for the country that will certainly make history. MeerKAT view of The cenTre of The MilKy wAyThe centre of our galaxy, the Milky Way, is seen above in this amazing image from the newly inaugurated MeerKAT radio telescope. The image shows the region surrounding a massive black hole, (with a mass 4 million times that of our sun), supernova remnants, star forming regions, radio filaments and a wealth of unexplained phenomena. Excerpts from the presentation given by Dr Fernando Camilo at the official inauguration Ceremony:"While radio waves can penetrate the dust, it’s super hard to make radio images of the centre of the galaxy – because it has a huge and

complex combination of bright features and faint features; large structures and small structures. All of this makes it very challenging for radio telescopes to get good, artifact-free images. Often, new radio telescopes don’t event attempt to do this for years after inauguration. Scientifically this will have enormous impact on the understanding of our galaxy; MeerKAT is already making unexpected important discoveries; no other instrument in the world can do this as well. MeerKAT - made in South Africa, by South Africans, an extraordinary achievement."

The galaxy that dominates this view of the sky was discovered in Cape Town in 1752 by Louis de Lacaille. De Lacaille, using his small telescope, could only see an indistinct “nebulosity” – the central bluish disk in this image. This is the combined visible light from billions of stars in the M83 galaxy, 15 million light-years from Earth and similar to our own Milky Way.The spiral structure visible to much larger distances indicates something else altogether: hydrogen gas that is the fuel for future generations of stars. This gas is mapped through its radio emission, detected with the MeerKAT telescope in the Karoo, represented here in a colour scale ranging from yellow (strong emission) through orange to faint deep purple. Averil has been a Guider in Pinelands for more than 30 years.Margaret Reid is the President of Girl Guides Cape West. She joined Brownies in Pretoria in 1947 and progressed to become a First Class Guide before her family moved

to Cape Town in 1958. She continues to support Guiding as a Trefoil Guilder.Colleen Gillett has lived in Pinelands for 60 years and offered to help with Brownies when her daughter, Mary, joined the 2nd Pinelands Brownie Pack. She volunteered as an Assistant Tawny Owl and in no time at all ended up running 2nd Pinelands Brownie Pack as the Brown Owl.Esme Linden has lived in Pinelands for 57 years and was a Sea Ranger as a young woman. PINELANDS WOMEN DEDICATED TO GUIDES



The size of the female economy – referred to as the ‘Sheconomy’ – is staggering. Women now represent a growth market that is twice the size of China and India combined. It is believed that women are now the single largest productive economic force and drive almost every economic indicator for businesses. More businesses are creating products and services designed to meet the actual needs of women, making the ‘shrinking and pinking’ strategy a thing of the past. Let’s unpack the female economy.

WOMEN AS INVESTORSAlthough women are often more nervous about investing than men, several studies suggest that they make better long-term investors. Women tend to trade less than men do, and exhibit less over-confidence. Sadly, the majority of women attest to feeling patronised and under-served by the financial services industry. In a recent survey, women cited lack of respect, poor advice, contradictory policies and red tape as obstacles when dealing with financial institutions. Because of the significant gender pay gap many women remain underfunded for their retirement. In a recent 10X report, 32% of South African women felt uncertain of their retirement plan.

WOMEN AND HEALTHCAREAs mothers and carers, it is not surprising that women influence 90% of all healthcare decisions including choice of service providers, medical facilities, treatment options and medication. Women make 93% of all over-the-counter medicine purchases. A National Marketing Institute found that women access the internet, more than their family doctor, as their primary source for healthcare information.

WOMEN AS CONSUMERSAs consumers, women are undeniably influential. They drive 80% of all consumer purchasing through a combination of buying power and influence. 74.9% of women identify themselves as the primary shoppers for their households. Women tend to buy for themselves, partners,

children, aged parents and extended family. In the US, women purchase 50% of traditional male products including automobiles, home improvement products and consumer electronics.

WOMEN AS ONLINE SHOPPERSJuggling their roles as mothers, employees, partners and carers, most women attest to being time-poor which is probably why women dominate the online shopping space. In South Africa, women make up 55% of all visitors to online shopping sites, with women between the ages of 25 and 29 being the most active users, and women over 50 being the fastest growing demographic online. Experts agree: when women find a brand that meets their needs, their online marketing power is enormous.

WOMEN AS EARNERS2017 statistics show that women in South Africa earn 27% less than their male counterparts. Among top earners this gap widens to 39%. Research shows that women re-invest 90% of their income in their families. Women also face the challenge of having their earnings interrupted during their child-bearing years.

WOMEN AS ENTREPRENEURSAccording to UNESCO Global Education Digest, women own about one-third of all business worldwide, and nearly half these business are in developing markets. Women have outnumbered men in worldwide university enrolments and graduation since 2009, which translates to an educated, increasingly powerful, growing segment of the economy.Motherhood, careers and managing households means the female consumer is time-strapped, and convenience-hungry. There are common threads in the hearts and minds of the female consumer that have led to the formidable rise of the ‘Sheconomy’. This may well be a case of ‘while the right hand rocks the cradle, the left hand rules the world’.

IGUAZU WATERFALLSThe first stop that Mark and I made was the Iguazu waterfalls on the border between Argentina and Brazil. Iguazu in Guarani, means big water. The falls are 2,7km long and consist of approximately 257 individual waterfalls. Being in the middle of the rainforest surrounded by such lush vegetation and walking along about 8km of walkways below, next to or over the thundering waterfalls was a truly memorable experience. Neither the heat, high humidity nor the occasional rain squall could dampen our excitement. Add masses of butterflies into the mix and it makes for an exhilarating experience.

RESTING PLACE OF EVITA PERONBuenos Aires was our next stop. The more I travel, the more I realise that I am far more of a country bumpkin (plaasjapie) than a city slicker. I loved the quaintness of the Palermo district and fell in love with the small alleyways that are transformed by graffiti and street art. We paid homage to Evita Peron in the very unusual Recoleta Cemetry that consists of more than five thousand mausoleums.

EL ATENEO GRAND SPLENDID BOOKSHOPWe were fascinated by the El Ateneo Grand Splendid bookshop, which was voted the 2nd most beautiful bookshop in the world in 2008. We are usually attracted to the books in a shop, but this time, it was the beautiful setting in a restored theatre with frescoes on the ceiling, the ornate carvings and couches in the theatre boxes that captivated us. There is a whole shelf full of vinyl records and a section just for tango

music. We could have spent a whole day in a bookshop where we could not understand a word we read.

LAKE NAHUEL HUAPIWe were happy to leave the city and move out into the country again to Bariloche, where our hotel room, walked right out onto the lake Nahuel Huapi. At 175 times the size of the Theewaterskloof dam, this is quite an expanse of water for someone who comes from a drought ridden city. (They watered the grass in front of our room three times a day!) We took a boat trip up the Tristeza arm of the lake with nobody else in sight, other than the 10 tourists on the boat. The water was crystal clear and one could see the rock face deep down along the side of the lake. We stopped at a deserted beach and took an hour long amble into the forest to a secluded waterfall. It was such a treat to get away from the hustle and bustle of daily life and feel at one in nature, where the air is clear and the only sound is that of the birds.

ARTISAN CHOCOLATE IN BARILOCHEBariloche is the chocolate capital of Argentina and the town is alive with artisan chocolate shops. One is enticed by a variety of chocolates from chocolate fountains to chocolate filled pancakes. The aroma of chocolates that cloud the main shopping drag acts like a “happy drug”.

PERINO MERITO GLACIERWe met with friends at El Calafate and went off to see the Perino Merito glacier. This is one of the few advancing glaciers and delivered all that we could hope for. We saw a sizeable calving just as we arrived and no matter how many piercing glances we threw at that solid wall of ice, it refused to entertain us with any more calvings.

TIERRA DEL FUEGOFrom here, our final Argentine destination was Ushuaia. We spent the morning on a tour to the Tierra del Fuego where we could walk to the furthest southern point of South America. It was a strange thought that just across the ocean, was our home, which was (just about) the most southern point of Africa.

WAITING TO BOARD FOR ANTARCTICAIt was getting progressively colder as we toured further south and by this stage we were in jackets and scarves. We were all excited to meet fellow travellers who were waiting to embark on the journey to Antarctica and to stand on the brink of a long awaited adventure.

Our entire trip was well orchestrated by Unique Destinations and we could not have done it any better had we tried.

We also welcome paid-for magazines, used cards and bits of ribbon. Often, one thinks of donating at that big clean out once or twice a year. Those are fantastic. Let your friends and family know to give their old books to you and bring

them to the library. Don’t think you have to have lots of items before you donate them. Regular, ongoing donations are ideal. Steady donations of one or two books become a stream, which is perfect. I encourage book clubs to donate their books as well. They are often books the library would love to have.So what do we do with donations? The library takes what they can use. The rest of the books are on sale in the Book Nook. Our library users often buy, read, and redonate the books. Magazines go straight to the Book Nook for selling. Cards are refurbished for selling; the leftover cards are repurposed into book marks. All items from the Book Nook are for sale. The funds from all our sales go towards helping the library with programmes for our community. Think Xhosa classes for adults, holiday reading programmes for the children, and much more. But even more fun are the extra books the Friends

1. Heat the oil in a large pot and fry chicken until brown. Spoon out.

2. In the same pot, fry onions, carrots, celery and baby marrows until brown.

3. Add chicken, tea, water, rosemary, bay leaves, barley and salt. Reduce the heat. Simmer with a lid for about 20 minutes or until the chicken is cooked.

4. Spoon out the chicken. Cook the soup for another 40-45 minutes or until the barley is soft.

5. Meanwhile, debone chicken and shred the meat. Add back to the soup once the barley is cooked. Season well with lemon juice and pepper.

6. Stir in the parsley and serve hot.

4 tsp (20 ml) olive or canola oil3 chicken breasts on the bone, skin and fat removed2 onions, chopped4 carrots, peeled and chopped4 celery stalks with leaves, chopped4 baby marrows, chopped8 cups (2 litres) strong Rooibos tea1 cup (250 ml) water5 sprigs fresh rosemary2 bay leaves1 cup (250 ml) uncooked barley¼ tsp (1,2 ml) saltlemon juice and black pepper to taste3 tbsp (45 ml) chopped fresh parsley

Chicken and barley soup

Wintertime is a time for warming bowls of soup and the options for different ingredient and flavour combinations are endless. You can choose between a thick and creamy soup, a more hearty, chunky option, or maybe you enjoy a lighter broth-like version – whichever way, each type of soup is delicious. The most flavourful soups are often made with everyday ingredients and this chicken and barley soup is no exception. The combination of complementing ingredients and a good cooking method to enhance the flavours, is always a great start. Carrots, celery and onion is a well-known base for soups and when sautéed together, the natural sweetness of the ingredients become even more intense. Browning the chicken before it is cooked, also adds lots

of flavour and by using Rooibos tea, instead of a salty stock, there will be no shortage of aromas in your kitchen. While simmering the chicken and veggies in the liquid, a homemade stock is formed, the perfect base for a soup. Barley thickens liquid as it cooks, resulting in a filling, nutritious soup. It’s also a lovely meal-in-one, as the soup includes something from each food group. Remember that barley is a type of carbohydrate, so don’t be tempted to serve this thick soup with bread as well. Rather add a few slices or cubes of avocado when serving the soup, as avocado is still in season. Then add an extra squeeze of lemon and fresh herbs just before serving and enjoy this recipe to warm you up this winter.
