The result has been at the centre of controversy since the connections of the third-placed Dschinghis Secret (Soldier Hollow) launched a series of objections to the winner, Darius Racing’s Isfahan (Lord Of England), and later also to the runner- up, Stall Ullmann’s Savoir Vivre (Adlerflug), on the grounds of whip abuse by the jockeys on the first two home in a tight finish- Dario Vargiu and Freddy Tylicki respectively. Both of them were adjudged to have struck their mounts nine times, while five is the maximum permitted under German rules. Both jockeys were ordered by the Hamburg stewards on the day to forfeit most of their winning percentage. That was in line with normal procedure, but the idea that the horse(s) should also be disqualified in such cases is a complete novelty and totally against normal international procedure. The Direktorium, Germany’s racing authority, has announced that the rules regarding whip abuse will now be rewritten, so that it will be clear beyond any doubt that disqualification is not an option. This affair has been dragging on for eight months and the vast majority of German racegoers now devoutly hope that this absurd situation is at an end and that the finishing order at Hamburg last July is now finally official in the order in which the horses passed the post. NSW GOVERNMENT MINISTER VISITS INLGLIS AUSTRALIAN EASTER SALEAs buyers gathered for the final day of inspections ahead of the Inglis Austrlaian Easter sale, the NSW state government minister Niall Blair was among those viewing the horses on offer.

Blair, who is minister for primary industries as well as trade and industry, was hosted by Aushorse and Thoroughbred Breeders Australia (TBA) during his visit to the Newmarket sale complex.“It’s great to see a minister take a real interest in what is going on here and understand the importance of the thoroughbred industry to the

NSW and national economy,” said Aushorse and TBA chief executive Tom Reilly.

After inspecting yearlings, Mr Blair sat down for lunch in the Widden marquee with Antony Thomspon, Teo Ah Khing of China Horse Club, Godolphin’s Henry Plumptre, Tom Reilly, Bruce Neil, owner of Cressfield Stud, Inglis boss Mark Webster, Arthur Mitchell of Yarraman Park Stud and Coolmore’s Tom Magnier.

The lunch provided an opportunity to discuss the key issues for the breeding industry, from coal mining in the Hunter to trade opportunities overseas. Blair said the thoroughbred industry made a valuable contribution to the state economy, “It’s incredible to see so much hard work and perseverance come together for the three-day Easter yearling sale. The strength of the thoroughbred industry is a great barometer for the NSW economy more broadly.”

While the visit provided the National Party member with a meeting with some of the leading players in the industry, Blair is more than familiar with thoroughbreds through a strong family connection and a love of horses.

With up to half of the buyers at the Easter sale coming from overseas, Blair also noted the growing importance of foreign investment to the growth of the Australian thoroughbred industry. “These are valuable dollars that could be spent in many other countries, and it’s a testament to the quality of our local horse breeders and their staff, that foreign buyers target our yearlings,” he said.

Antony Thompson, chairman of Aushorse, was thrilled to see a senior member of the government visit the sale, “It should reassure all breeders that there is a senior minister, who understands the horse business and is interested in supporting our industry,” he said.

include the Gr.2 winner Illustrious Lad, Gr.3-winning two-year-old Invincible Star and his four current season Stakes-placed horses are headlined by Hellbent, who went ever-so-close to becoming his sire’s third Gr.1 winner in the William Reid last week.

I Am Invincible is the country’s leading stallion by winners to runners, with a consistent percentage of more than 50%, and his two-year-old filly Houtzen’s Victory in the Magic Millions 2YO Classic in January ensured his results in the sale ring this year followed suit. He sired a A$1.4m colt at the Premier Sale in March and a A$900,000 colt at the Gold Coast in January, when his yearling average soared to more than A$318,000.

He will stand at a fee of A$110,000 (Inc. GST) this spring.Young stallion Hinchinbrook, Snitzel’s three-quarter-brother,

has had a brilliant start to 2017, following his remarkable Spring where he was one of only four stallions to sire more than one Stakes winner at the Melbourne Cup Carnival. Australia’s Champion first- and second-crop sire, courtesy of Gr.1 winner, now stallion, Press Statement and Gr.3 SA Sires’ Produce winner Flying Jess respectively, brought 2017 in with a bang when the latter followed up with her win in the A$2m Magic Millions 3YO Guineas at the Gold Coast in January, defeating previously unbeaten colt Winning Rupert and dual Gr.1-winning filly Global Glamour.

Hinchinbrook’s current season Stakes winners, headed by the juvenile Diamond Tathagata from his third crop, who emulated his sire when winning the Gr.2 Skyline Stakes on the Slipper trail, have been joined by Gr.3 winner Spright and Listed winners Flippant and Derryn, who became his sire’s ninth Stakes winner last weekend.

Hinchinbrook’s fee has been set at A$44,000 (Inc. GST).Arthur Mitchell said, “I Am Invincible sired his second Gr.1 winner in

the Spring. He is the sire of 19 Stakes winners now and he consistently churns out the winners. His current rate is 56%, which is leaps and bounds ahead of any other stallion in the country, and it is resonating with buyers in the sale ring. Hinchinbrook has only had three relatively small crops to race and is producing real quality. Both stallions have done what they have off low fees and they are upgrading their mares which is a real and rare attribute in stallions. We’re lucky to have them and appreciate the continued support of our clients.”

YARRAMAN PARK ANNOUNCE 2017 STUD FEESYarraman Park has set the fees for the 2017 breeding season for its Champion stallions I Am Invincible and Hinchinbrook.

I Am Invincible, sire of dual Gr.1-winning sprinter and sire Brazen Beau and new season Gr.1 winner I Am A Star, has had an outstanding year both on the track and in the sales ring, with 19 Stakes winners to his credit. The winner of the Gr.1 Myer Classic in the Spring and again last weekend in the Gr.2 Sunline Stakes, three-year-old filly I Am A Star also took out the Gr.2 Kewney Stakes earlier this year. DAWN APPROACH£50 charity bet at 10/3 for breeder HUGH HYLAND Charity - Irish Injured Jockeys Fund As we have charity selections from trainer Joseph O’Brien and agent Ross Doyle, today we focus on breeders and speak to Hugh Hyland of Oghill House Stud in Ireland. The breeder of many top-class horses, including Gr.1 winner and new sire Marcel, said: “My pick is definitely Dawn Approach, but if I could put in another one that I like as second choice then it would be Epaulette.

“The reason that I picked Dawn Approach is because I think one of the nicest yearlings we have ever produced and sold last year at Tattersalls Book 1 was a Dawn Approach out of a mare called Pleasantry, who is a half-sister to Kingman. I and the staff here all thought that he was the finest yearling we have ever sold and he is in training with Hugo Palmer [now named Fajjaj]. I haven’t had any word on how he is doing, but I have seen adverts that say he has a number of Dawn Approachs and that he likes them all.

“On top of that, when we went to the sales, there was a Dawn Approach filly beside us and we thought she was really, really nice as well. She was from the family of Red Cadeaux and was a cracker too, and is now with Mikey O’Callaghan [out of Artisia, but as yet unnamed].

“I have some lovely foals here by Dawn Approach and Epaulette and any of them that I have come across have been the same. So, on the strength of what we got, we went back and supported both stallions again this year.

“I couldn’t have enough of them, I hope I’m right, but Dawn Approach was a very early two-year-old himself. The first two-year-old race was run in Ireland last Sunday at Naas; I think Dawn Approach won it in his year and he was still running at the end of the year and winning Gr.1s, so he was a tremendous racehorse himself, and just going on the stock, I love what I have seen by him.”

POINT-TO-POINT JOCKEY JAMES MCNEILE DIES AFTER LARKHILL FALLJames McNeile, 57, an amateur jockey from Devizes in Wiltshire has died after a fall at Larkhill point-to-point on Saturday. He was flown by air ambulance to Southampton Hospital after sustaining a significant head injury and died on Sunday.

A statement issued by the IJF on behalf of McNeile’s family said: “It is with much regret that we announce today the death of James McNeile. James fell in the 3.45 race and collided with the fence sustaining a significant head injury. He was attended immediately by the racecourse medical team, which included consultants in emergency medicine and intensive care and anaesthetics as well as paramedics.

“It was immediately apparent that this was a substantial brain injury and after stabilisation he was flown by air ambulance to Southampton Hospital. On arrival and after subsequent examination, it became apparent that the degree of brain damage was such that this was not a survivable injury. James deteriorated overnight and died peacefully on Sunday.

“James died competing in a sport he loved, and around which he had built his life and some wonderful friendships.”

Jockey David Crosse paid tribute to McNeile, tweeting: “Devastated about my good buddy James McNeile passing. Always smiling and went doing what he loved. May he RIP.”

COLLECTED (USA), 3c, City Zip – Helena Bay (Johannesburg) O: Speedway Stable, B: Runnymede Farm and Peter J Callahan, T: Bob Baffert $150,000 Keeneland September Yearling Sale, by SGV Thoroughbreds, consigned by Runnymede Farm $170,000 OBS March Two-Year-Old by Speedway Stable, consigned by SGV Thoroughbreds.

A debut winner and then runner-up in the Gr.3 Cecil B DeMille Stakes in two starts and two, Collected was among the best of the second tier three-year-olds in the US last year. He took the first of the Californian Classic preps, the Gr.3 Sham Stakes on his reappearance and then, after having his limitations exposed when fourth in the Gr.3 Southwest Stakes, added victories in the Sunland Park Festival of Racing and Gr.3 Lexington Stakes. Trying the upper echelon in the Gr.1 Preakness Stakes, he finished tenth, coming out of the race body sore. Away until the weekend, he overcame the ten month absence in style, romping home by three and three quarter lengths in the Santana Mile Stakes at Santa Anita Park.

Her dam, Helena Bay, is a Johannesburg daughter who was born in England, but scored her only victory while racing in Canada at two. Helena Bay is out of the Irish-bred mare, Josette, and is half-sister to US Stakes winner Woodwin W, and to Japanese Graded Stakes-placed performers Las Venturas and Deep Sound. Josette herself is half-sister to Listed winner Entice, and to Queen Emma, dam of Irish Dream, a Stakes winner in Australia. Helena Bay’s grandam, Loure, is out of Allicance, a Group-placed half-sister to Blushing Groom, who produced three Stakes winners, including the Gr.2 Royal Lodge Stakes victor Royal Kingdom, and is grandam of the sire Agnes Digital, Champion Older Horse in Japan.

OLORDA (Ger), 5m, Lord Of England – Oligarchia (Desert King) O: Martin S Schwartz, B: Gestut Berwangerhof, T: Chad Brown

Olorda made her first three starts in very tough company in the US, finishing eleventh in the Gr.1 Belmont Oaks Invitational Stakes and fourth in the Gr.1 Queen Elizabeth II Challenge Cup Stakes, before ending 2015 with a twelfth in the Gr.1 Matriarch Stakes. She started just twice last year, leading throughout to take Gr.3 Very One Stakes at Gulfstream Park in March and the Gr.3 Bewitch Stakes at Keeneland in April. Returning to action in this year’s renewal of the Gr.3 The Very One, the bay could only manage sixth. On Saturday, however, in the Gr.3 Orchid Stakes, she looked far more like her herself, tracking the early pace, taking over in the stretch and battling on to take second, beaten just three quarters of a length. Racing in Europe, she made her first three starts in Germany, winning the last of those outings. Successful in the Gr.3 Prix Vanteaux next time out, she then took third, albeit nine lengths back, behind Queen’s Jewel in the Gr.1 Prix Saint-Alary.

Sired by a son of the Shirley Heights line stallion Dashing Blade, Olorda is a sister to the Gr.1 (then) Italian Derby runner-up Oil Of England. The dam was Listed-placed in Italy, and is out of Ostwahlerin, a sister to Ostwahl, a Gr.3 winner in Germany, and half-sister to Ost Tycoon, the dam of German Group winners Omikron and Ostland.

PERFORMER OF THE WEEK

ALL INCLUDED (USA), 6h, Include – Eximius (Atticus) O/B: Wertheimer and Frere, T: Todd A Pletcher

The son of a British-foaled mare, All Include has long threatened to capture a good race and on Saturday he broke through, storming from last to first to win the Gr.3 Appleton Stakes at Gulfstream Park. He began his career with wins in four of his first seven starts, all in maiden or allowance company. Since the last of those wins, back in July 2015, the chesnut has raced almost entirely in Graded Stakes company and, although he had not added to the win column, he had earned third in the Gr.3 Bernard Baruch Handicap, Gr.2 Fort Lauderdale Stakes and last year’s Gr.1 Gulfstream Park Handicap. On his most recent start prior to the weekend, he closed from the rear to cross the line third in this year’s Gr.1 Gulfstream Park Handicap, three quarters of a length and a neck behind the winner Almanaar, but was promoted to second on the disqualification of the initial runner-up Beach Patrol.

All Included is out of French Stakes-placed Eximius, whose five other winners also include the Gr.2 Honeymoon Handicap victress Sarach. A three-parts-sister to Stakes-winning and Group-placed Stunning, Eximius is also half-sister to Dreamboat, the dam of Music Show, who took the Gr.1 Falmouth Stakes, and two other Group races, and was also several times Gr.1-placed, including when third in the Gr.1 Irish 1,000 Guineas, and grandam of Stakes winner Gardening Leave; to Glasgow’s Gold, dam of the Gr.1 Ruffian Handicap victress, Swift Temper; and to Fabulous, the grandam of Turbulent Descent, co-highweight sprinting three-year-old on the World Thoroughbred Rankings. Sarach’s grandam, Gorgeous, was among the best fillies of her crop in the US, and numbered the Gr.1 Vanity Invitational Handicap among her triumphs. Among the other celebrities under the third dam, Broodmare of the Year, Kamar, are Seaside Attraction, Golden Attraction, Cape Town, Red Carnival, Desert Lord, Key To The Moon, Hiaam, Alpha, Flashing and Fantastic Light.

E B N : T U E S DAY, 4 T H A P R I L 2017

Aventador has been one of the most interesting horses we have covered in this column. A contestant in the 2015 Gr.1 French Derby, in the US he dropped all the way down to competing in claiming events at state fairs at Santa Rosa and Sacramento, before beginning an unlikely rise up the ladder. On Saturday he continued his resurgence as a Stakes horse with a length-second to Blue Bomber in the Wildcat Handicap at Turf Paradise. His eclectic US record also includes three wins in claiming company at Golden Gate and Santa Rose, a starter allowance at Golden Gate and an allowance/optional claiming contest at Turf Paradise, a black-type win in the Turf Paradise Handicap and a close third the Walter R Cluer Stakes at Turf Paradise. In his native France, he made 16 starts by the end of the June of his three-year-old season, ten at two, winning a maiden at Chantilly, and on his final outing the Prix Ridgway at Compiegne, as well as taking second in the Gr.3 Prix Noailles and Listed Prix Isonomy.

Aventador is one of five winners produced by his dam Day Of Dream. Herself a five-time winner in France, she is half-sister to Listed-winning and Group-placed Aneysar, Stakes placed Anntari, and to Antakiya, the grandam of Stakes winners Another World, Lady Sybil, Impassable and Es Es Runner.

SIMMY’S TEMPLE (GB), 3f, Royal Applause – Samasana (Redback) O: Great Friends Stable, Steven Keh, and Daniel Kramer, B: Redgate Bloodstock, T: Doug F O’Neill £12,000 Doncaster Premier Yearling Sale by Bobby O’Ryan/Keith Dalgleish

Runner-up in a maiden at Doncaster on her only start in England, Simmy’s Temple captured a maiden at Del Mar in August on her second outing in the US. Unplaced in the Del Mar Juvenile Fillies’ Turf Stakes and Surfer Girl Stakes on her next two outings, she earned her first black type with a win over odds-on favourite, Tapped, in the Pike Place Dancer Stakes at Golden Gate Fields at the end of October. With a fourth in the California Oaks her best showing in her next four outings, she dropped out of Stakes company for an allowance/optional claiming event at Golden Gate Fields on Saturday, and scored by a length and a quarter.

Simmy’s Temple is the first foal of her dam, Samasana, a winning half-sister to black-type-placed Singeur. The grandam, Singitta, is a half-sister to Stakes-placed Injaaz and Hardball, but perhaps more significantly to Corndavon, who produced the Gr.2 July Stakes winner Nevisian Lad to Simmy’s Temple’s sire, Royal Applause.

GO AROUND (USA), 5h, Medaglia D’Oro – Mediation (Caerleon) O: Peter Vegso, B: Vegso Racing Stable, T: William I Mott

Winner last year of the Tampa Turf Classic, Go Around returned for this year’s version of the race on Sunday and took second to Gr.1 winner World Approval. Unraced at two, he won maiden and allowance events in his first four starts and then took third Gr.3 Saranac Stakes at Saratoga. Last year, he kicked off with an allowance/optional claiming tally at Gulfstream Park, and his Tampa Turf Classic win. He did not add another victory, but did take second in the Brooks Fields Stakes and fourth in the Gr.3 Arlington Handicap.

Go Around is half-brother to The Go Between, a four-time Graded Stakes winner, whose triumphs included the Gr.1 Pacific Classic, and to the Gr.3 (then) Cherry Hinton Stakes third, Extreme Beauty. Their dam, the Irish-bred Mediation, raced with success in both Ireland and the US, winning the Leopardstown 1,000 Guineas Trial and earning places in several black-type events, including the Gr.3 Jenny Wiley Stakes at Keeneland. Mediation is also a half-sister to the dams of Sea Front, Ward Hunt and Sheer Tenby, black-type winners in France, the US and Ireland respectively.

MADDIZASKAR (USA), 5m, Bellamy Road – Zaskar (Anabaa) O: Final Turn Racing Stables and Jacobson David, B: Jack Anderson, T: David Jacobson

Some years ago, English-bred Zaskar featured in this column as a multiple Stakes performer in the US. Now it is the turn of her first foal, Maddizaskar, who earns a mention after hitting a career high with a win in the non-black-type Sis Stakes at Aqueduct. She won a maiden claimer at Gulfstream Park on her debut, which came at three. She added three more wins, a starter allowance and claiming level in her 15 starts, but signified that she had progressed with a second in an allowance/optional claiming event at Aqueduct in late February.

While racing in Europe, Maddizaskar’s dam, Zaskar won three races in England and took second in the Prix Urban Sea at Le Lion-d’Angers. Racing in the US, she added seconds in the Possible Mate Stakes and Signature Stallions Stakes. She is three-parts-sister to Listed winner Ans Bach. Her dam is a three-parts-sister to black-type scorer Amico Mio, and is out of the black-type-placed Dancing Brave mare, Maid Of Kashmir, a half-sister to German multiple Listed winner More Wind, and to the dam of Messi, a multiple Graded Stakes winner in North American, and to Gr.2 Doncaster Champagne Stakes victor McCartney.

AVENTADOR (Fr), 5g, Zafeen – Day Of Dream (Rainbows For Life) O: Mark Staudacher, B: rene Vallaud and Tony Castanheira, T: Kathy Schenk

subsequent starts. The second dam, the unplaced Saratoga Babe (Saratoga Six), produced two others Stakes performers.

Bluegrass Sara has a two-year-old colt by The Factor and a yearling colt by Flat Out.

Globe Theatre (King Kamehameha), the full-brother to Gr.1 winner Leontes and half-brother to the Gr.1 Japan Cup hero Epiphaneia (Symboli Kris S), was the favourite of the Yamabuki Sho, a conditions race over 2200m on Saturday at Nakayama. The colt, who was third last season in the Gr.2 Hopeful Stakes, lacked that extra gear and finished fourth.

JapaneseJapanese RACING REVIEW

ALL THE GO (Jpn), 3c, Stay Gold – Alluring Voice (French Deputy) O: Sunday Racing, B: Shadai Corporation, T: Yoshito Yahagi

All The Go (Stay Gold), who returned a lacklustre performance last time in the Gr.2 Spring Stakes, collected his third win on Sunday at Hanshin in the open Marguerite Stakes, a valuable event over 1400m. He outpaced the filly Queen’s Sarina (Danon Chantilly) to score easily and has been credited with a three-figure speed rating. All The Go earned ¥39m in seven starts, slightly more than the first prize of the 2000 Guineas. The brilliant colt is the best of the three winners from four foals delivered by the dual Gr.3 scorer Alluring Voice (French Deputy). The second dam Alluring Act (End Sweep) foaled seven others winners, including the ¥132m earner Amazing Tact (War Emblem).

Alluring Voice has a two-year-old filly by Lord Kanaloa and a yearling filly by Deep Impact.

RESONATOR (USA), 3c, Blame – Bluegrass Sara (Tabasco Cat) O: Silk Racing, B: Hubert Vesler, T: Koji Maki $130,000 Keeneland September Sale by Katsumi Yoshida, consigned by Katsumi Yoshida

The form of the Japanese three-year-olds on dirt received a boost from Epicharis (Gold Allure), who ran a solid race when second in the Gr.2 UAE Derby. Resonation (Blame) recorded his third consecutive win on Sunday at Nakayama in the Fukuryu Stakes, over 1800m and received a huge speed rating (102.3). He has room for improvement and enough talent to win at Group level. The imposing colt is from the third crop sired by the 2010 Breeders’ Cup hero Blame (Arch), who stands at Claiborne Farm at a fee of $25,000. Resonation is the third winner out of Bluegrass Sara (Tabasco Cat), a fast and precocious filly, unbeaten in her first three starts, including a couple of minor Stakes races in Texas for trainer Steven Asmussen. STAR PERFORMER

ADMIRABLE (Jpn), 3c, Deep Impact – Scarlet (Symboli Kris S) O/B: Hideko Kondo, T: Hidetaka Otonashi

The Azalea Sho, over 2400m on Saturday at Hanshin, turned into a tactical affair. Leading jockey Mirco Demuro made the winning move with Admirable (Deep Impact) when the field bunched along the back straight. The big colt (514 kilos) kicked home strongly and won easily by three lenghths from Admire Robson, who completed a 1-2 for the Champion Sire Deep Impact and the Kondo family. Admirable clocked the last 600m in 33.5 and was recording his second win. He has huge potential and will be interesting to watch at Group level.

His dam, the unraced Scarlet (Symboli Kris S), produced two multiple winners, both by Deep Impact. She is a half-sister to Victory (Brian’s Time), who won the Gr.1 Satsuki Sho, and Lincoln (Sunday Silence), a multiple Gr.2 scorer who was second in the Gr.1 Kikuka Sho, Arima Kinen and Tenno Sho Spring. The second dam, Grace Admire (Tony Bin), is a Gr.2 placed half-sister to the Japanese Derby hero Fusaichi Concorde (Caerleon).

Scarlet has a yearling filly by Orfevre and visited Deep Impact again last season.

(Rulership). He already failed in his first attempt at Group level, but has plenty of ability.

Charro Negro is the fourth winner out of Luminance (Jade Robbery), a useful racemare who collected four wins and more than ¥66m. The second dam, Chanzi (El Gran Senor), won the Matron Stakes, now a Gr.1.

Luminance visited Heart’s Cry again in 2016.

BLACK’S BEACH (Jpn), 3f, Deep Impact – Visual Shock (Kingmambo) O/B: Hidetoshi Yamamoto, T: Katsuhiko Sumii

Black’s Beach (Deep Impact) had her day, after two second places, in the fillies’ maiden over 1800m on Saturday at Hanshin. She is the second foal and winner out of Visual Shock (Kingmambo), who was placed multiple times in Japan. The second dam, Reach For The Moon (Pulpit), ran twice, winning a maiden at The Curragh by four lengths and finishing third in the Gr.1 Fillies’ Mile. She produced three winners and is a half-sister to Agnes Digital (Crafty Prospector), who won the Gr.1’s Tenno Sho, Mile Champsionhip, Yasuda Kinen and February Stales in Japan and delivered a Gr.1 at Sha Tina landing the Hong Kong Cup and the Queen Elizabeth Cup.

Visual Shock has a two-year-old filly by Orfevre, a yearling colt by Harbinger and visited Deep Impact in 2016.

LEAD THE FIELD (USA), 3c, Haynesfield – Da River Hoss (River Special) O: Makio Okada, B: Brereton C and Brereton Ned Jones, T: Noboru Takagi $50,000 Keeneland September Yearling Sale by LEX, consigned by Brereton C Jones

Lead The Field (Haynesfield) opened his account in a maiden over 1800m on dirt on Saturday at Nakayama. The US-bred colt is a half-brother to six winners, including the Gr.3 scorer and Classic-placed River Proud (Proud Citizen). Their dam, Da River Hoss (River Special), is a half-sister to Da Hoss (Gone West), who won the Gr.1 Breeders’ Cup Mile in 1996 and doubled-up, in his second start after a 23-month layoff, in the same race in 1998 for trainer Michael Dickinson.

Da River Hoss has a yearling filly by Alternation.

CONFIDENCE (Jpn), 3c, Neo Universe – Confident (Machiavellian) O: Hideko Kondo, B: Hinode Bokujo, T: Takeshi Okumura ¥21,000,000 Hokkaido Summer Sale by Hideko Kondo

Confidence (Neo Universe) came back from a four and half-month layoff to score in the maiden over 2000m on Sunday at Nakayama. The flashy chesnut colt, who fetched the second highest price at Hokkaido Summer Sale, did his job readily and will step up from this win. He is the fourth winner out of Confident (Machiavellian), a half-sister to Holberg (Halling), who won the Gr.3 Queen’s Vase before the downgrading, and Undermine (Miner’s Mark), a Gr.3 scorer in US.

NationalAccounts

During the breeding season here we were fortunate enough to catch glimpses of the most renowned jumps meeting in the world, the famous Cheltenham Festival. There are not many days that go by in the flat racing calendar without Galileo stamping his authority, and even at Cheltenham he did not fail to sparkle. His son Supasundae, trained by Jessica Harrington, claimed the Coral Cup Handicap Hurdle, bred on the classic Galileo–Danehill cross that has dominated the racing world for years.

We now turn our attention to the eagerly awaited flat season. Having worked at Tweenhills in the past, it was pleasing to see Santry, a son of Harbour Watch, claim the first division of the Brocklesby Conditions Stakes for trainer Declan Carroll and jockey Neil Farley.

I have always been told to control the controllable in life, but unfortunately at times you face scenarios where that is not possible. I have recently been working on a yard where one of the foals has been on box rest for a fractured sesamoid. After many a day of being stood in the box with his dam, there finally came the day for Laura, one of our NEH vets, to re-examine the foal in which good news was welcomed. The bone had healed well and it was finally time for the youngster to embrace some freedom and green grass, albeit in a small turnout cage for the first week or so to prevent things from taking two steps forward and one step back.

Last week we were privileged to have been lectured by Simon Curtis on farriery. Simon’s knowledge on this particular matter is second to none, which is no surprise, given his vast wealth of experience. He has lectured and demonstrated farriery in 16 countries on four continents, including the USA, Australia, India, and Dubai, and in 2005 was inducted into “The Farriers Hall of Fame” in the Kentucky Derby Museum, in Louisville, Kentucky.

Lectures for the week ahead for my fellow students and I are to include common race horse injuries and conformation problems which predispose them, and a Lower limb dissection.

also raced in Germany for Jaber Abdullah, when she was trained by the late Bruno Schütz, winning twice at two, including the Listed Oppenheim-Rennen. She did not race again, but has done very well as a broodmare, her winners so far including top-class racehorse and sire Zafeen (Zafonic), Europe’s Champion Three-Year-Old Miler in 2002, when he won the Gr.1 St James’s Palace Stakes, the Gr.3 Prix du Calvados winner Ya Hajar (Lycius; dam of the Listed winner Prince Of All), the Listed Fortune Stakes winner Atlantic Sport (Machiavellian) and her current five-year-old Akeed Champion (Dubawi), winner of three races, including the Listed HH The President Cup, in Abu Dhabi this winter, as well as the Gr.3-placed Akeed Wafi (Street Cry) and the Listed-placed Happy Today (Gone West). The next dam, Shy Danceuse (Groom Dancer), was a winner in France and was a half-sister to dual Group-winning miler Diffident (Nureyev) while her own dam Shy Princess (Irish River) was runner-up in the 1986 Gr.1 Prix Morny.

Excelebration – Pinacotheque (In The Wings) O: H G Stihl, B: R G and T E Levin, T: Andreas Wohler €50,000 Goffs Orby Yearling Sale by Beliar Bloodstock Distances: 1¾l, nk. 6 ran.

This was probably a decent race and the two previous winners took the last two places. With a furlong to go there were still five in with a chance, but in the final stages Kauttio (Excelebration) asserted in promising style. He had run well on his only start at two and started favourite here to continue the good run of the three-year-olds trained by Andreas Wohler, who also saddled the runner-up Rostam (Hat Trick). Kauttio now looks likely to be one of the stable’s candidates for the Gr.3 Dr Busch-Memorial and Gr.2 Mehl-Mulhens-Rennen. He is the second foal of the dam Pinacotheque (In The Wings), from one of the best Wildenstein families, whose first Elyud (Cape Cross) was Listed-placed in Norway. She was a winner in France and also Listed-placed; she was offered at the 2008 Tattersalls Breeding Stock Sale but was bought in for 200,000 guineas. Her dam, Palmeraie (Lear Fan), did not win but bred seven winners, including the sire Policy Maker (Sadler’s Wells), who won four Gr.2 races and was Gr.1-placed, the Gr.2 winner Pushkin (Caerleon) and the Gr.3 winner Place Rouge (Desert King), as well as the unraced Plante Rare (Giant’s Causeway; dam of the multiple Gr.1 winner and sire Planteur). The next dam, Petroleuse (Habiat), won both her starts, including the Gr.3 Princess Elizabeth Stakes, and also bred seven winners, notably Gr.2 winner Peinture Bleue (Alydar), herself dam of the very smart Arc winner and sire Peintre Celebre (Nureyev). This is also the family of Champion Pawneese and last year’s German Champion Protectionist.

Zamindar – Shy Lady (Kaldoun) O: Jaber Abdullah, B: Rabbah Bloodstock, T: Andreas Wohler Distances: 3¼l, ½l. 7 ran.

An innovation by Hoppegarten racecourse to stage a race for unraced three-year-olds was rewarded with a decent field, with four of the seven runners having an entry in August’s Gr.1 Preis der Diana, including the easy winner Shy Angel (Zamindar), who chased the early front-runner before going on two furlongs out and quickly drawing clear, with the rest well strung out. Jaber Abdullah’s homebred looks well up to black-type standard, at least judged on this performance. The dam Shy Lady (Kaldoun)

The Middleham Open Day is returning after a year out and is being organised by Racing Welfare on the 17th April, Easter Monday, with sponsorship from Arena Racing Company.

Middleham is home to more than 500 horses in training and visitors on the day will be able to view equine talent at the yards of twelve trainers who are opening their doors to the public on the day. Visitors to Ann Duffield’s Sun Hill Farm will be able to see two previous Cheltenham Festival winners, Peddlers Cross and Cinders And Ashes, who were both trained by Donald McCain. At Barry Keniry’s Warwick Lodge pre-training stables visitors will be able to meet two top-class dual purpose horses in Junior and Mad Moose.

There are also demonstrations and displays at the yards and in the afternoon there is entertainment on Low Moor. As the organisers of the event, Racing Welfare will be the main beneficiary charity, with a proportion of the funds raised also going to the Yorkshire Air Ambulance charity. Funds raised during this event will be used to work alongside the Jessica Bethell Charitable Foundation to help develop a facility for young racing staff starting their careers in Middleham.

THE LAND OFOPPORTUNITY

A u s h o r s e . c o m . a u

Nowhere is the relationship between risk and reward more in your favour when buying colts than in Australia. Our top colts are more affordable than other markets and, if you buy a stallion prospect, the returns are better than elsewhere.

You also have a better chance of buying the next generation of sire star here. Some 67 per cent of Australian Group 1 winners were sold before their racing careers, compared to 34 per cent in Europe and 52 per cent in the US.*
