MATT STAIRS WITH WIFE LISA AND YOUNGEST DAUGHTER CHANDLER

ACCEPT THE PLAQUETHAT DEDICATES THE DOG AREA TO THE STAIRS

FAMILY FOR ALL THE SUPPORT THEY HAVE SHOWN THE FSPCA.

It is with great honour we dedicate the Dog Room of the FSPCA to the

Matt Stairs family. Their support and dedication to the work we do is

immeasurable. Through the Matt Stairs Charity Golf Tournament, the Stairs

family has raised funds that have covered the medical bills for a whole

year, as well as helping out with some emergency medical cases that

needed that extra help.

We are deeply grateful and appreciative of the work they do, tirelessly

fostering kittens, working and volunteering both for and with the animals,

and just being there to lend a helping hand despite their busy schedules.

Matt is the Ambassador for the FSPCA, but he comes with incredible

support from his family. So thank you Stairs family for all you do for the

FSPCA!

A Success Story for Hazen…

Meet Hazen. A lovable 3 year old boy who came to us as a stray.

During his medical check up the staff noticed a hard object under his

skin on his upper right shoulder.

He was taken to the Veterinarian to find out what it was, and after an

X-ray it was found to be a bullet. Hazen had been shot at with a .22

caliber gun. He had to undergo surgery to have it removed and now

he is recovering from his ordeal.

It is because of donations from you, that Hazen

is safe and healthy, and he was adopted into

his forever home now that he has recovered.

Your donations helped Hazen and many more

animals within our shelter. Hazen thanks you

and so do we!

TOO HOT FOR PETS

WITH FREDERICTON

CITY POLICE

This summer the Fredericton City Police partnered with the

Fredericton SPCA to educate the public about the dangers

of leaving your pets in your car during the hot summer days.

Constable Alli Yerxa with PSD Endzo along with Constable

Small, Constable Hatt and Constable Fox as well as the

Wal–Mart stores on both the North side and the South side,

helped get this message across. Highlighting the event was

the demonstration that showed the vehicle was so hot you

could cook an egg!

Of special interest was the Regent Mall’s Paw Patrol vehicle

that patrols the parking lot for pets and kids that are left in

the vehicles. This was a great event and everyone had fun!

SECOND CHANCES

Stiletto was originally found wondering around behind some buildings on the north side of Fredericton

by a caring individual. She noticed that the cat’s front left leg was broken so she brought her to the

FSPCA. After a thorough health check, she was taken to the Veterinarian who assessed her and

noticed she was also malnourished and dehydrated. She felt she had been that way for a while. A

couple of days later it was imperative that she had to have her leg amputated as it had been infested

with maggots and was severely infected.

Stiletto went into foster care to learn how to walk again and to

fatten up. Reports from her foster family (now her adopted

family) show that she is gaining weight and has learned to run,

jump and claim your lap to curl up in and purr.

Thank you to the caring individuals that gave her a second

chance!

ASK A VET - BLUE GREEN ALGAE

BY: DR. KRISTA FOREMAN

Blue green algae is a type of bacteria, called Cyanobacteria, which can be found in freshwater espe-

cially during hot weather when lakes, rivers and ponds have lower water levels.

The algae tend to accumulate together into "blooms" along shorelines. The blooms can produce two

types of toxins - one that causes liver damage and another that causes neurological signs. Some

blooms do not produce toxins but, without testing, there is no way to say which are producing toxins

and which ones are not.

Microcystin is the toxin that can cause liver damage or failure. Signs include vomiting, diarrhea, blood in

stool, weakness, jaundice, seizures and can progress to death usually after several days. The second

type of toxin is Anatoxin which causes neurological signs including muscle tremors, spasms, seizures, diffi-

culty breathing and sudden death which can follow minutes to hours after exposure. There is no anti-

dote. Veterinary care is supportive - controlling seizures and protecting the liver.

AVOID EXPOSURE- small amounts, even a few mouthfuls, can be enough for severe symptoms if one of

the toxins is present.

The CBC reports blue-green algae warnings in 7 NB lakes:

Washademoak Lake; Grand Lake; Harvey Lake; Chamcook Lake; Lake Utopia; Lac Baker; Lac Unique.

Department of Health advises against swimming, water-skiing etc. in the affected lakes and reports the

toxins can persist for weeks.

Visit Animal Poison Control Center Website for more information.
