Dear Parents

It was with much sadness that we said farewell to our Year 12 cohort both at their last assembly on 17 October, where the entire Secondary School stood and clapped to honour them as they left the hall, and at their Valedictory on the evening of 18 October, which was a celebration for them, their teachers, parents, families and friends. On the evening, I shared two stories with the Year 12s, two stories that I had told themattheirveryfirstassemblyasSecondarystudentsin Year 8.

Thisisthefirst:AnoldIndianchiefcalledhisthreesonsto him. “I want each of you to climb our holy mountain and bring back something of beauty,” he said. “The one whose gift is the most exceptional will succeed measchief.”Whenthefirstyoungmanreturnedafter

somedays,hegavehisfatheraflowerfromthesummit.Itwasrare,delicateandbeautiful.Thesecondson brought a stone. It was colourful, smooth and round, polished by wind and rain. The third son’s hands were empty. He said, “Father, I have brought you nothing. As I stood at the peak of our holy mountain, I lookedattheothersideandsawabeautifullandfilledwithgreenpasturesandacrystallake.Ibreathedthe mist and marvelled at the glistening of the sun. And I had a vision of where our tribe could go for a better life. I was so overwhelmed by what I saw and by what I was thinking that I returned with nothing. His father replied, “You shall be our tribe’s leader, for you have brought back the most precious gift of all – the gift of vision for a better future!”

My message to the Year 12s was that it is important to have a vision for the future. That vision may not staythesame, itmaybepolishedandrefinedasyougo;itmaybethat, whenyoustoptoreflectatsomepoint, youdecidetochangeyourvisionaltogether;butitisimportanttorememberthough, thathaving a vision is what will drive you forward and take you to the next success and the next.

My second message for the Year 12s came from the same story – there is nothing wrong with the gifts thatthefirsttwosonsbroughtbackfromthemountain.Theywerethingsofbeauty.Inthestorytheywerethingsofphysicalbeautybutlifeisfilledwithmanythingsthatalsohaveafigurativebeauty;seekthese out and share them with others. Things of beauty shared with others enrich all of our lives … and this bringsmetothenextstory:

One evening, an elderly Cherokee brave told his grandson about a battle that goes on inside all people. He said, “My grandson, the battle is between two ‘wolves’ inside each of us. One wolf is bad. It is anger, envy, jealousy, sorrow, regret, greed, arrogance, self-pity, guilt, resentment, inferiority, lies, false pride, superiority, and ego. The other wolf is good. It is joy, peace, love, hope, serenity, humility, kindness, benevolence, empathy, generosity, truth, faith” (and I might add our Frederick Irwin Core Values of Respect, Responsibility, Honesty, Compassion and Courage). The grandson thought about it for a minute and then asked his grandfather, “Which wolf wins the battle?”

The old Cherokee replied simply, “The one that you feed.”

This is true for all of us – if you are able to go through life determined to feed your ‘good wolf’, you will be positive and strong, and, in turn, have so much of a better chance of realising your vision for a successful future.

It is always sad to say farewell, but we wish our Year 12s all the best for the next stage of their journey.

10 and 20 Year ReunionsOn the other hand, what a pleasure it was to welcome the Class of 2008 and the Class of 1998 back to the school on the Friday evenings of 12 and 26 October respectively. All seemed so pleased to see each otherandmanyoftheirteachers;therewasmuchchattingandreminiscing, andmanyhugs!Reallylovely evenings!

Kind regards

Dear Parents and Caregivers Much has been written and said about caring for the planet.A Christian perspective is that what God has created is good and we are to be good stewards with what He has blessed us. History will tell you that that has not been the case. The recent banning of plastic bags was just a small step but one worth taking. Originally from South Australia the 5c deposit of drink containers has had a huge impact on the amount of waste that people seem to leave around irresponsibly. I can also remember travelling to WA in the early 70’s with my Teachers’Collegeandbeingterrifiedtolitterbecauseofthestrictfinesthatwereinplacebackthen…..wheredid it all go wrong.

I recently read an article about Ploggers. Ploggers are groups of people who meet and then go for their daily or weekly run / walk and collect rubbish as they go. After their ‘plogging’theymighthaveayogaclass/fitnessclasstogether.Inarecentploggingmeeting in India, 7000 people turned out and collected 33.6 tonnes of rubbish. Dear Parents and Caregivers

Last week we had our rescheduled Founders’ Day celebrations and it was wonderful to see the community gathered to celebrate Frederick Irwin Anglican School with a service and then carnival-like afternoon activities. The students really enjoyed the variety of activities available and they made the most of what was on offer. When we gathered to sing ‘We Are Irwinians’ it was an emotional moment seeing the students singing with pride about their school. Such days take a lot of organisation so I would like to thank everyone involved in making the day a success.

On Thursday 8 November, the Kindergarten and Pre-Primary orientation sessions will be held for the students of 2019. This is an opportunity for the 2019 Kindergarten students and new Pre-Primary students to experience the School environment and for parents to meet staff. The meeting will commence at 11.15 am. The 2019 Kindergarten parents will meet in the Primary Assembly Area and Pre-Primary families in the Creative Learning Centre. Only students new to the School for Pre-Primary in 2019 will attend orientation on this day as existing Kindergarten students will have their Pre-Primary orientation as part of the normal school timetable. Existing Kindergarten parents are invited to attend the Pre-Primary meeting.

Parent surveys will be sent to Year 2 and Year 6 parents later in the term. These surveys provide an opportunity to give feedback at the completion of a child’s early years’ education and at the end of Primary School. The information collected is valuable to us so I encourage you to take the time to complete the survey when it arrives by email. A link in the email will allow you to complete the survey electronically.

Class Placements for 2019As reports are now online, class placements for 2019 will be sent home in a letter, with the students, on the last day of Term 4.

Booklists for 2019When ordering your booklists for 2019, you are reminded that the supplies are ordered completely online and no money or lists will be collected by the School. For 2019, I ask that booklist items are purchased as described and only in the quantities given. Many pencilcasesaretoobigtofitinthetraysandcontainmuchmorestationarythanisnecessary for one year. Stationary that is gimmicky can be distracting to the children and their learning so should be avoided for school purposes.

Term 4 is a very busy term, and everyone is continuing to work extremely hard. Thank you tothestaffandstudentsforthefocusandcommitmenttofinishingtheyeartothehighstandard that is expected at Frederick Irwin.

Kind regards

Dear Parents and Caregivers FOUNDERS’ DAYLast Wednesday saw the Primary School celebrate the school’s foundation with our annual Founders’ Day celebrations. The day started with the Halls Head students arriving at Meadow Springs to participate in a Kindergarten to Year 6 service in the Gymnasium. The Primary School learnt some new facts about the history of Frederick Irwin Anglican School during an address led by our Principal, Ms Robertson.

The formal occasion of a service in the morning was followed by a more informal celebration in the afternoon. It was wonderful to see family and community members joining our students for a picnic lunch followed by the many activities on offer. Whilst the bouncy castles,

tractorridesandponyridesprovedtobepopular;Iwanttopersonallythankthetirelessworkofourstaffand students in organising and delivering on many stalls and activities. These proved to be well attended by many of our students, who enjoyed participating in activities ranging from card making to face painting and obstacle courses.

The highlight of the day had to be the rousing rendition of ‘We Are Irwinians’ to end the afternoon. The sight of all of our Kindergarten to Year 6 students and community members in the Assembly Area was a wonderful sight, showing pride in the school we all attend. It was certainly a proud day to be an ‘Irwinian’ and honour the history of our wonderful school.

REMEMBRANCE DAYIn the last newsletter, I made reference to the upcoming Remembrance Day Service we are having in the Primary School on Friday 9 November. There is a change of times for this service. It was originally scheduled for 8.35am but is now commencing at 9.45am. Parents and community members are most welcome to attend this service.

END OF YEAR SERVICES At the culmination of the school year, there are some special Primary Services occurring that all parents areinvitedtoattend.ThefirstofourPrimaryServiceswilloccuronFriday30November;theYear3toYear6Presentation Morning commencing at 9.00am in the Gymnasium.

On Monday 3 December we will have our annual Kindergarten to Year 2 Christmas Concert, also in the Gymnasium, commencing at 9.00am. This will provide an opportunity for the students of our early years to present Christmas songs and for the School to participate in some community singing. I look forward to seeing many parents at these services close to the end of the academic year.

On the afternoon of Monday 3 December, we will recognise our Year 6 students at the Year 6 Thanksgiving Service. This will occur from 1.30pm, followed by afternoon tea in the foyer of the Performing Arts building. ThiswillbeaspecialoccasionforourYear6studentsandtheirfamiliesastheyreflectontheiryearsinthePrimary School.

KIDSMATTER As I have mentioned in previous newsletters, as a KidsMatter school we are currently committed to Component4:UnderstandingandRecognisingMentalHealth.AlthoughKidsMatterisabouttomergeintothe National Education Initiative (NEI), led by Beyond Blue, Headspace and Early Childhood Australia, we are still committed to continuing this focus in 2019 under the new NEI Banner. The Pastoral Care Committee, a voluntary team of teachers and education assistants from across the Primary School, have met this term to discuss and look at ways that we can better understand and recognise mental health issues in our students. These discussions will continue as a staff later in the term when we meet to look into this further. I will continue to keep you updated into next year as to how we are continuing to approach this at Frederick Irwin. One of our key focal points will be ‘prevention’ in a Primary School setting. Experts are advising that in achild’sformativeyears, preventionisthebestcourseofaction, byeducatingstudentsspecificallyonhowto best deal with the thoughts, emotions and challenges they may be facing in life.

Dear Parents and Caregivers

FOUNDERS’ DAYFounders’ Day was a very special opportunity for our two campuses to join and celebrate the founding of Frederick Irwin Anglican School. I’m sure that everyone who attended would agree that the event had a wonderful atmosphere.

Our Founders’ Day service, activities and singing were enjoyable and highlighted our strong sense of community. I thank our staff for their efforts and organisation in making this day special.

Dakoda Montgomery and Ryland Goodwin, our Ellis and Barrett House Captains will also be participating in a Remembrance Day service with the Dawesville RSL on Sunday 11 November. It is wonderful that the RSL have invited our students to participate, and I’m happy that we have created this community link.

YEAR 5/6 CAMP The Year 5 and 6 students travelled to Point Walter this week for three days of exciting camp experiences. I visited the students on Monday and Tuesday nights and was very happy to see smiles on everyone’s faces. I heard many stories about the adventures of the day and was thrilled to hear about our students’ personal accomplishments. Camp is an opportunity for students to safely move out of their comfort zone and attempt new and exciting challenges. It is also an opportunity for students to experience more independence and develop their organisation and time management skills. I am very proud of our students and thank Mr Tudor, Mrs Shepherd, Father Noel, Mr Austin, Mr Montgomery and Ms Smith for helping make camp such a positive experience.

KIDS MATTERKidsMatter is Mental Wellbeing framework that we engage in to assist us in meeting the pastoral and wellbeing needs of our students. It also helps us map our initiatives and stay in tune with current programmes. In the next couple of weeks the National Education Initiative facilitated by Beyond Blue, Early Childhood Australia and Headspace, will launch. This initiative will incorporate aspects of the KidsMatter framework but also include many more new elements. We are excited for this development and will keep our community informed on its progress.

OPTIMINDS

This year Frederick Irwin had six teams in the Opti-MINDS challenge. Five from Meadow Springs and a Halls Head team. These students all gave up much of their own time to write scripts, explore, investigate, problemsolve, haverespectfulinteractions, reflect, evaluate, timemanageandshow resilience. All in a co-operative and challenging team environment. These are all very highly regarded learning skills in the Engagement Matters Program at Frederick Irwin. I am sure you will agree that these students represent Frederick Irwin’s pedagogy and holistic approach to learning, wheretheyhavebeencreativelearnerswithresilienceandenoughconfidenceintheirownabilities to strive to be the best they can be.

They represented Western Australia at the Nationals, where again, they had a three hour lock up and this time the challenge involved building a one metre tower out of cards with nothing to bind it and then balance up to 10 matchboxes on the top. This was incorporated into a story about the celebration of 30 in a country called Abouria.

2018 REUNIONS It’s that time of year again, when past Fredrick Irwin students gather to meet old friends, share stories and recall fond memories about their time at the school. This year we hosted the classes of 1998 and 2008. As can be seen in the photos below, a great time was had by all.

We saw many groups of friends who have stayed in touch over the years as well as some unexpected reunions between students and teachers. The class of 1998 reunion was also attended by former principal Geoffrey Arnold who caught up with several students who attended during the early years of the school. Each evening was topped off with a group photo and a post-reunion get together.
