Transcript of Frederick Grier Portfolio - 2012
Frederick Schultz GrierP o r t f o l i o 2 0 1 2
The first three projects of this portfolio are a small sample of the work Frederick Grier has completed with Murphy/Jahn Architects. Pulled from the Schematic Design and Design Development phases, these samples illustrate his responsibilities and acute interest in connections and detail drawing development.
The next two projects explore universal sustainable space (horizontal and vertical context, respectively). These are the products of two semesters of research and design with international architect and professor Peter Land. Professor Land worked very closely in refin-ing the details and connections that make these two projects suc-cessful. Their beauty and simplicity arrive through careful concept development and structural detailing.
The following project, Interpolation, represents work completed with Zoka Zola’s design team for an international design competition for social housing and community development. The entry won First Place, and is now under construction near the coast of Rijeka, Croatia.
Modulate is a pre-cast concrete project for Milwaukee Wisconsin, completed for a design studio sponsored by the Precast/Prestressed Concrete Institute (PCI). It features an economically modulated form with a shifted floor plate. Each unit has natural ventilation and daylight, city views, and a private outdoor space.
The next section, Model, includes photos of work completed for ar-chitecture courses at IIT illustrating various modeling techniques and detail development. The last project presented is the final first year team project Post-Tension, exploring the use of post-tensioning us-ing milkcrates as a compression unit; scrap wood block shims were used to undulate the beams adding a sense of whimsy.
This work stands on its own, so the use of text has been minimized. Please contact Frederick to discuss the complexities and challenges of these and other projects in greater depth.INTR
