EARLY LIFE Born in Maryland, February 14, 1818. He saw his mother only four or five times in

his life. His job in the farm was to keep the chickens

out of the garden. He slept in the cold, damp floor. He ate in a large wooden tray on the ground.

LIFE AS A SLAVE Work in any weather.

Whipped by his owners.

Treated like an animal.

HOW HE REACT? He learned to read. He spoke to other slaves about freedom. He wrote passes for the slaves, and was

arrested. He returned to his old master, and worked

hard.

THE ESCAPE He escaped to New york. He married with Anna Murray. He spoke in anti-slavery meetings. He said:

"I came into this world as a slave. I shall leave it as a free man."
