As most residents o FrederickCounty probably know the hor-ror and carnage o the Ameri-can Civil War ooded into theShenandoah Valley 150 years ago.Six large ull scale battles anda number o skirmishes searedwars consequences into the soulo Frederick County, while arms

everywhere were destroyed dur-ing Te Burning in 1864.

Much o that history has been

preserved, while sadly much oit has also been lost to develop-ment. Anyone interested in theCivil War will quickly noticethe myriad collection o histori-cal markers lining the roads allthroughout the county. A CivilWar bu o any level o enthusi-asm can nd parts o most o the

battleelds to tour, and there areeven some guided tours oered.

Te battleeld o the Firstbattle o Winchester is sadly cov-ered by the modern structures, shopping plazas and heavily tra-cked roads. Bowers Hill, whereStonewall Jackson crushed the valiant Union deenders is nowan upscale housing development.Tankully there is a sel guidedtour o the battle and plenty omarkers telling the story o thechaotic ght. Te First battleo Winchester is oten used as aprime example by preservation-ists o how sad it is to see an en-tire eld o honor where bravemen bled and died totally paved

over and replaced with homesand malls.

Te Second battle o Win-chester was part o the amousGettysburg campaign, anotherthrilling Conederate victory asthey moved north toward theirate on the rolling elds o Penn-sylvania. Small parts o the bat-tleeld are preserved and mark-ers tell the story o the ght northo town.

Te Tird battle o Winchesterwas the largest and most costly oany battle that took place in theValley. It was a signature Unionvictory that began the end o the

Conederate success and hopesor victory. Te battleeld is par-tially preserved with a large tract

o land owned by the Civil Warrust directly behind Milbrook

high school. A beautiul walk-ing trail leads to a large open eldwhere Union troops were moweddown in their brave attacks. Tebattle culminated near the loca-tion o Mount Hebron Cemetery.

wo battles o Kernstownmarred the beauty o the eldssouth o Winchester. Te Firstbattle o Kernstown occurred inMarch o 1862 and grew out oStonewall Jacksons amous Val-ley campaign. Te Second battleo Kernstown was a Conederate victory, as the southern troopsbroke a Union line huddled be-hind a stonewall. Tis area o the

eld is still preserved and can betoured. A portion o the rst bat-tle is preserved by the Museum othe Shenandoah Valley.

Cedar Creek may have beenthe most crucial battle o the Val-ley campaigns, a comeback vic-tory by Phil Sheridan that helpedensure President Lincolns reelec-tion to the White House. Mucho it is preserved by the CedarCreek Battleeld Foundation andNational Park Service and thegrounds beauty contrasts might-ily with the horror o what hap-pened here.

    In addition to these wonderul

educational opportunities, twobeautiul cemeteries give resi-dents and visitors the chance to

Carrabbas Italian Grill in Kern-stown opened Monday night. Al-though the store is the 233rd toopen in the chain, it doesnt eellike a chain. Managing PartnerMike Xiaras takes out all the stopsto provide you with a memorableexperience. At a recent lunch withreporters, Mike and his sta werepersonable and open. Te lun-cheon table had a amily eel. Teood was resh and unbelievablygood. Te restaurant is clean and

airy. Te sta treats you like am-ily.

Carrabbas is part o a collectiono restaurants owned by OSI. Oth-ers in the collection are the Out-back Steakhouse, Bonesh Grill,Flemings Prime Steak and RaysHawaiian Fusion. Tere are simi-larities between the restaurants.Carrabbas has a takeout kitchen

to guarantee your takeout is asgood as eating in the restaurant.Your ood is delivered to your car.

Te kitchen is open to the res-taurant, so you see your ood be-ing prepared. Mike likes to havekids sit by the kitchen, so theycan see the cooks throwing thepizza dough. Speaking o kids,i they want French ries, whichCarrabbas does not sell, Mike rec-ommends zucchini ritte; the kidswont know the dierence.

Everything is made resh at Car-rabbas. Te garlic is chopped dai-ly, which gives the garlic dishes a

real garlic avor. Te tomatoes areshipped in rom Sicily. Te chainhas its own research and develop-ment team, and all o the chains

purchase together, so Carrabbascan get a good deal on the reshest

    ingredients.Carrabbas does not take res-

ervations, but they do have callahead seating. And the entreprices range rom $10 to $25.

Te menu is impressive. Tereare soups and salads, meats, sea-ood, chicken, pizza, and pastas.Te dishes are based on recipesused by the original Carrabba am-ily. Te desserts are decadent. Tewine list is expansive, and quitegood. Tere are both importedand domestic beers, and sparklingstill water.

Carrabbas caters to its custom-ers. According to Mike, i they

have the ingredients or a dish inthe restaurant, the sta will behappy to make you a special re-quest. However, since eggplantparmesan takes a day to set out,he asked that you call a day in ad-

    vance.Mike received over 660 re-

sumes, and is still hiring. He is very impressed with the hiringpool. Tis reporter was very im-pressed with the employees. Teywere extremely enthusiastic aboutCarrabbas, and its treatment oits employees. Many o the em-ployees were working their wayup the corporate chain, and plan

on making careers out o work-ing or Carrabbas. Among thebenets that employees receiveis a 50% discount when dining atCarrabbas and 25% o when din-

ing at any o the other restaurantsin the corporate group. Tey also

receive turkeys or Tanksgiving. One drawback, every employeehas to try every dish at least once. But as server Mia Rolle said Wetake care o our people.

Mike is committed to the com-munity. He and his amily live inStephens City. Hal o the pro-ceeds rom opening night, upto $5,000, will be donated to the

Pondless Wateralls are simplya re-circulating waterall and/orstream without the presence o apond. You can enjoy the sight andsound o running water withoutthe maintenance o a pond.

Te waterall is undoubtedly themost beautiul and avored eaturein a water garden. I space is lack-ing in your yard or you have saetyconcerns with a pond, go Pond-less! Te name basically explainsit all. Its a waterall and stream, without the pond. So why would

you want a waterall without apond? Te truth is that a Pond-

less Waterall isnt or everyone, but it can be a great alternative orsomeone who isnt quite sure i a

pond is right or their amily.

    Saety

Because there is no pool o wa-ter, a Pondless Waterall is a greatoption i you are concerned aboutsaety issues associated with a tra-ditional pond.

    Cost

Cost can be a big actor whenconsidering the type o pond youwant to build. In most cases, theprice o a Pondless waterall willbe less than a pond, because thereis less labor involved, as well asless rock and materials. Operating

costs are also less. Because yourenot dealing with an establishedecosystem, its not necessary to

    run the pump 24/7.

    Space

Te small size o the PondlessWaterall means you can buildand enjoy a beautiul waterallanywhere in you yard.

    Maintenance

aking care o your PondlessWaterall is easy. Filling the res-ervoir every ew weeks to com-pensate or water loss because oevaporation is all thats required.

    Flexibility

Perhaps the best part o thePondless Waterall is the possi-bility or the uture. I you change

your mind later, wishing youdbuild a pond, thats ok! I you leaveenough room around the baseo the waterall, its easy to add apond onto a Pondless Waterall.

    Complete System

It might be dicult to imagine

a waterall and stream without apond. Where does the water go? APondless Waterall works muchlike a regular pond. Te hole, deeper than a normal pond, is dugthen lined with rock and gravel, and lled with water. Te wateris then circulated rom beneaththe rocks and gravel by a pumpthat sits on the bottom, inside aSnorkel Vault and CentipedeModule. A pipe runs rom thereup to a BioFalls Filter and intoan overowing waterall, where italls back into the reservoir. Sincethe water level never pools abovethe level o the rock and gravel ll,

Earnhardt Jr.Proud to BeIn the Chase

RICHMOND, Va. -- Te Chase is

here ... and Dale Earnhardt Jr. is back

    in it.

It wasnt easy. He didnt win a

race. Te season has had its ups and

downs. His No. 88 Chevy staggered

    through the nal regular-season rac-

es. But he made it. en drivers make

it by Sprint Cup point standings, and

    Earnhardt Jr. was the 10th.

Hes got his shot. He has 2,000

points. Kyle Busch and Kevin Har-

vick have only 12 more. Over 10

races, those 12 points dont amount

to very much. I Earnhardt can get

his team back in gear, he can win the

    championship.

    Las Vegas oddsmakers have made

    Earnhardt a 40-1 shot. Te winner o

the past ve, Jimmie Johnson, is 3-1.

Well just go see how we can do

in the Chase, said Earnhardt a-

ter scrambling to nish 16th in the

    Wonderul Pistachios 400.

Im proud to be in the Chase, he

added. I eel like Im a good enough

driver to be in the Chase. My team is

good enough to be there. ... Had we

been more conscious and smarter at

certain times, we wouldnt have had

to even worry about it this weekend. But were a good team, and Im

proud to carry my sponsors and

    HMS (Hendrick Motorsports) in the

Chase and represent them. Were go-

ing to work real hard, and hopeully

    we do a good job.

    Tis is Earnhardts ourth appear-

ance in the Chase, which began in

2004. He nished th that year and

also in 2006. In 2008 he brought up

    the rear, nishing 12th.

Weve got to run a dierent setup

than what we ran in the last six (regu-

    lar-season) races, rankly, Earnhardt

conceded. We had a pretty good run

at it going through the rst 15 races,

and or whatever reason, we sort o

ell o and orgot some things, or

    over-engineered some

    Well go in there w

    titude.

    opportunity to run

    pionship, he said. I

    my points position an
