Livrea a
in Canada e ceduti all’Aeronautica Militare dalla Royal Canadian Air Force.

The aircraft with which the 313° Gruppo Addestramento Acrobatico Frecce Tricolori is equipped is the PAN version of the
Alenia Aermacchi MB.339A, a single engine tandem seat training and tactical support aircraft. Apart from the livery, the
313° Gruppo aircraft differ from the standard model serving with the Aeronautica Militare’s 61° Stormo at Galatina
(Lecce) airbase by the presence onboard of the coloured smokes generation system; this device is controlled by two buttons:
one on the stick, for white smoke, and one on the throttle for coloured smoke. The system is fed from an under wing fuel
tank lled with a colouring agent which is discharged through nozzles placed in the jet exhaust. The agent, vaporised in
the jet exhaust, produces a coloured trail. Another PAN aircraft peculiarity is that in order to enhance manoeuvrability along
the aircraft longitudinal (roll) axis, and to reduce wing loading, it ies with no tip tanks. These are cylindrical 510 litre tanks
which are only mounted on the aircraft for long-range ferry ights. They are replaced by an ad hoc wingtip fairing which
covers the wingtip tank attachment points. Since 2002, the PAN also received Mid Life Updated MB.339s. This MLU pro-
gramme has integrated the previous series models with updated structural features and avionics, such as GPS, formation
ying position lights, a new V/UHF radio equipped with a new tail antenna, in addition to reinforced nose and tail. The
MB.339 has equipped the PAN since 1982, when it replaced the FIAT G.91, a light ghter bomber aircraft which entered
service with the Frecce Tricolori in 1963. The Pattuglia’s “Gina”, with its characteristic pointed nose, was the pre series ver-
sion stripped of the photo reconnaissance system and served by a modied ight control system and a smoke generation
device. The G.91s replaced the PAN’s rst aircraft, the Canadair CL13 “Sabre” Mk4 (F-86E), a Korean War veteran US -
ghter aircraft, which had been produced under licence in Canada, and then passed to the Italian Air Force by the Ameri-
can Government after serving with the R.C.A.F.
LE FRECCE OGGI / F R E CC E TO DAY
The aircraft assigned to the PAN is an entirely home-built product. It is the Aermacchi MB.339A, a single-engine two-seat training and tactical support aircraft which, in its PAN version, is slightly differentfrom that which equips the 61° Stormoof the Aeronautica Militare, the Italian Air Force’s jet ying school. The examples own by the Frecce are, in fact, equipped with smoke generating equipment and y without the wingtip supplementary fuel tanks, which increase the manoeuvrability of the aircraftaround its longitudinal axis.

molte manifestazioni.
This conguration was retained for the subsequent public displays. The effective team in 1968 was the “Diavoli Rossi” (“Red Devils”), from the 6^ Aerobrigata, ying
F-84F “Thunderstreak”, which had made its debut on 11 March 1957 at Vicenza airbase when serving as the reserve team. Beginning on 15 March 1958, the team di-
splayed with ve aircraft plus one solo. With their seven F-84Fs, the “Diavoli Rossi” were present at many air shows. Particularly important was the one at Aviano
during which the Italian team measured itself against the “Sky Blazers”; this presentation resulted in the achievements of the “Diavoli Rossi” provoking an invitation to
display in the United States in April 1959, on the occasion of the rst Las Vegas World Flight Congress. During their American tour, on which the “Diavoli Rossi” ew in
F-84Fs made available by the Weapons School at Luke AFB, which were painted in a slightly different scheme than their usual, the team participated in several air di-
splays among which, their last before returning home, was that over Coney Island, in New York bay, in front of a little less than a million spectators, including thousands
of Italian nationals who had emigrated to the New Continent. Meanwhile, at Cameri, the 2^ Aerobrigata’s “Lanceri Neri” (“Black Knights”) Team was created as the
ofcial formation for 1959, equipped with six black painted CL13s on which, for the rst time ever, the national tricolour appeared under the wings and on the stabili-
sers. The team displayed at various national and international air events and featured in the longest formation transfer made by ItAF aircraft, taking part, following the
invitation from Shah of Persia, in an important air show at Teheran. In 1959, the 5^ Aerobrigata’s “Getti Tonanti” returned with F-84Fs, initially ying standard colour
aircraft on which only the “Goddess Diana the Hunter” logo featured, but which, beginning in the following season, and coinciding with the Rome Olympics, were deco-
rated with the coloured rings symbol of the Olympic Games. With the “Getti Tonanti” exhibiting a ve aircraft formation, a new manoeuvre was invented, the Gush, and
the Double Roll was reintroduced. This manoeuvre is so spectacular that today it is still performed in the PAN’s display. Despite the fact that at the time the reserve role
was assigned to the 4^ Aerobrigata, in 1960 the Air Force Staff decided to interrupt the team formation rotation principal in order to rationalise the employment of
human resources and aircraft. The presence of two teams in two Air Brigades had become unsustainable, such was the effort in training the pilots, which diverted them
from operational activity. It was thus decided to create an ad hoc unit which would be dedicated to aerobatics training. On 16 January 1961, through directive number
5567/243, the Air Staff issued a command for the constitution of the 313° Gruppo Addestramento Acrobatico, commencing on 1 July of the same year, with home base
in Rivolto airbase in the Udine province. In the new Squadron six CL13s were merged with four pilots from the 4^ Aerobrigata team, which in the original plan were due
to have been appointed as the effective team that same year. These pilots were joined by others who had already served with the “Diavoli Rossi” and the “Tigri Bianche”.
The “core” of these pilots came from the “Cavallino Rampante” team and were therefore entitled to choose the Unit’s radio call sign, which has survived until today: “Pony”
- rather than “Freccia” (Italian for “Arrow”) or “Rivo” (after Rivolto), as some had suggesteds.
Benetting from the experiencesof the “Diavoli Rossi”, “LanceriNeri” and the “Getti Tonanti”,the Air Force Staff decided toabandon the practice of assigningunits the role of forming anaerobatic team to represent theAir Force on a rotational basis, and created a unit dedicatedto acrobatic training. This was 1961, the dawn of a “newera” which would see, in the yearsto come, the Pattuglia AcrobaticaNazionale draw the Italian tricolourin skies around the world.

Each deployment of the PAN is supported by a C-130J of the 46^ Brigata Aerea at Pisa. The transport aircraft performs the transfer of support personnel, essential supplies, and a selection of spare parts based on an annual evaluation of the component failurerates, the fatigue level, and the speedat which the parts are ageing.

The organisation of any Frecce Tricolori display, both in Italy and abroad, requires the execution of a long series of actions for which a senior pilot is responsible, acting as Operations Team Direc-
tor, and aided by four Project Ofcers (POs), chosen from the team’s aircrew who have own at least three seasons as a display pilot. Generally, the POs and the Ops Team Director share the or-
ganisation of the scheduled displays, undertaking all the verications and coordination related to the displays under their competence, and also functioning as points of contact should any of their
colleagues require information or details on their deployment. For each display a given PO is chosen (among other things) to plan the formation’s route, the submission of ight plans and diplo-
matic clearance requests for the transit of foreign airspace to the competent Air Trafc Control agencies, the creation of the en-route meteorological folder, the despatch of advance refuelling requests
to intermediate stop airbases/airports, and the verication of the availability of the support C-130. Some non-specic technical aspects must also be arranged, such as billeting and transportation
requirements, besides making sure that all the luggage reaches the deployment facility with no delay, in order to allow the Commander and all his pilots to participate in full dress uniform at the
reception usually hosted by the local authorities. Being assigned other responsibilities, such as public relations, training and ight safety, the pilots holding key roles such as Commander, Forma-
tion Leader, 1st slot, and solo display pilot, are exempted from the arrangement of all the logistic and organisational aspects involved with the Pattuglia’s deployments.

T H E P E O P L E
Mass crowds always accompany the Frecce Tricolori’s displays, where ever they take place. The PAN is an undisputed and universally recognised symbol of Italy, with which
all Italians identify themselves without any distinction of social class or culture, as the entire Frecce Tricolori concept ably represents the quality and excellence of a nation which
is capable of brilliantly harmonising fantasy and rationality, professionalism and inspiration, strict discipline and respect for the rules with courage, expressing with the be-
haviour of its men, both in the air and on the ground, their State identity, the attachment to those values which are the cornerstones of the Italian nation, and which gather
all Italians together. The devoted and engaged presence of the general public at the PAN’s displays further underlines the feelings of the people for the Italian Air Force, and
expresses widespread backing and esteem for the importance of the Armed Force mission in the service of the Country and its citizens.

Even if the standard formation own by the Frecce Tricolori is perfectly symmetrical, the visual perception and way of ying it change according to whom is yingon the right or left of the formation’slongitudinal axis. For this reason, as a rule, once assigned to a positionon the right, a pilot remains on theright hand side of the formation duringhis tour with the Pattuglia (unless posted to the centre), and vice versa.
