Good Morning Everyone!!! presenting you
Glimpse of some Cases from
“Freakonomics”By:Akshay Seth Nishant TyagiSaurabh Sudhir
CASE 1 CASE 2
CASE 3
CASE 1:The socioeconomic
patterns of naming
children (nominative
determinism)
What’s in a name? There was a girl, Temptress whose misdeeds landed her in New York Court. The Judge asked her mother, How her daughter name was named? Her mother told it happened eventually mistake from her side in spelling of Actress name Tempestt Bledsoe to Temptress. Then Judge wanted to know the meaning of her name. But they didnt actually knew that she was actually “living out her name”. Her daughter was charged with ungovernable behavior, which included bringing men into the home while the mother was at work. It isn’t much of a stretch to assume that Temptress didn’t have ideal parents. Not only was her mother willing to name her Temptress in the first place, but she wasn’t smart enough to know what that word even meant. People who can’t be bothered to come up with a name for their child aren’t likely to be the best parents either.
What’s in a name?
A man named Robert Lane had two sons, Winner and his brother, Loser.By the name only, we can easily guess their destiny, BUT it went up side down.
Loser become successful detective via scholarship in his school time and graduating through college.Winner, having the sheer length of Criminal Record, had 3 dozens of arrest for all kinds of crimes in his life.

Time to Ponder upon• So does the name you give your child affect
his life?
• Or is it your life reflected in his name? In either case, what kind of signal does a child’s name send to the world—and most important, does it really matter?
• Individuals with distinctively black names do tend to have worse life outcomes. But why?
• If you have a really bad name, should you just change it?
• What your parents were telling the world when they gave you your name?
Case 2: Where have all the criminals gone?????
CASE 3:PURE CORRUPTION

Important QuestionIs there any chance of
Cheating/Corruption in this sport??
Steven Levitt Says “Yes there is a chance”Answer
Each Sumo is associated with a Rank
Higher Rank : life with comforts, luxury and RESPECT
Lower Rank: life could be miserable without money and RESPECT
The whole Ranking Structure is a kind of
Pyramid
Six Tournaments – Every Year
Each tournament has 15 Matches
A Sumo who win 8 out of 15 Matches, then his Rank is Increased by half a
slotWhich means $5000
Paycheque per month + lot of Respect
Sumo A 8:6
Sumo B 7:7
Ideal Case 50 : 50
Analyzed Case25:75
Huge Deviation
Not a Coincidence
Sumo B has lot of things to gain
Sumo A has nothing so much to loose
There is a chance that Matches were Rigged
Rigged is also known as Yaocho in Japanese Language
Which is a kind of Taboo Word
Some other Incidents
