The Student Free Day scheduled for 17 August will now be for ALL students from Kindy to Year 12.  It was previ-ously adver sed as being for Duncan Street only.

Whilst the Balmoral Campus Book Fair will be going ahead this Term, please note that Book Week celebra ons for both Prep and Junior Schools will now take place early Term 4.  More infor-ma on to follow.

Board Mid-Year Update  As we are now in our second week of Semester 2, I would like to update the College com-munity on some of the activities the Board has been involved in whilst continuing to support the Management of the College during Semester 1.  It has definitely been a semester like no other!  The Board commenced the year with a busy schedule ahead which would see the completion of the Scholarship Sub Committee’s work, discussions around the planning of Stage 13 and involvement in the College’s Strategic Direc-tions Plan 2021–2023.  However, due to the current pandemic the Board did not meet in March and the agenda for our April meeting of the year took on a slightly different look as we began planning around the impact COVID-19 would have on our community.  Included in this planning was the Financial Management of the College with our focus concentrated on people first, supporting our families, students and staff, providing a safe workplace environment and maintaining good fiscal management.  I can report that during this time the College, together with the support of the Board, has  ensured our community has stayed safe within the College environment.  Our student enrol-ments remain strong whilst continuing financial assistance where necessary.  Of course, the College Board is mindful of the continuing impacts COVID-19 is having on  families on many different levels and we thank all those families who are able to continue to support the College at this time.

At the last Board meeting held on Tuesday 28 July, our agenda had some resemblance of “normality” with the inclusion of discussion around what Stage 13 in the future would look like, together with the recommencement of our Scholarship Committee.  The College Board also  welcomed Gunther DeVos – Research and Planning Officer from Catholic Education WA – who provided us with detailed demographic infor-mation regarding Catholic Education as a whole and how this effected Ursula Frayne Catholic College.  This information provides the Board with what the future may look like and how we can plan for these changes.  

On behalf of the College Board, thank you for your continued support of the work that the Board carries out and we look forward to continu-ing in its work across the second half of the year.

Chaplain’s Reflection ST JOACHIM AND ST ANNE  

The feast day of St Joachim and St Anne, the parents of Mary and grandparents of Jesus, was celebrated on  26 July.  There is no biblical references of their names and all we know of them, even their names, comes to us through an ancient tradi on found in the Protoevangelium of St James, a very old document from the 2nd century that give us a great deal of informa on about Our Lady's parents.  Like many other stories in the Old Testament, Anne a er many years of childlessness, prayed to God and an angel appeared to her and at the same  me to Joachim, who was travelling.  The message was of great joy for them because they were going  to be parents of a special child, Mary.  Anne and Joachim were so happy of such great blessing that they dedi-cated their daughter to God in the service of the Temple.  

St Joachim is the patron of grandfathers, grandparents, married couples and linen traders.  St Anne is also the patroness of Chris an grand-mothers and of women in labour.  St Joachim is shown as an old man, o en in company with his wife Anne and his infant daughter Mary.  He holds in his hand a book or scroll represen ng the linen makers, a shepherd's staff for the Chris an word and some mes a basket of doves represen ng peace.  

Pope Francis said on Sunday: "On the memorial of the Saints Joachim and Anne, Jesus’ “grandparents”, I would like to invite the young to perform a gesture of tenderness towards the elderly, especially the loneliest, in their homes and residences, those who have not seen their loved ones for many months.  Dear young people, each one of these elderly people is your grandparent!  Do not leave them by themselves.  Use the inven veness of love, make telephone calls, video calls, send messages, listen to them and, where possible, in compliance with the healthcare rules, go to visit them too.  Send them a hug.  They are your roots.  An uprooted tree cannot grow, it does not blossom or bear fruit.  This is why the bond and connec on with your roots is important.  “The blossom of a tree comes from what it has underground”, says  a poet from my homeland".  

A great Saint for another great Cluster of our College.  St Joachim's Parish in Victoria Park is also blessed to hold such a name, let us live in  his footsteps.

Junior School Faction Cross Country The Junior School Fac on Cross Country Carnival was held on Thursday 23 July at Fraser Park.  It was a perfect day and the compe on was intense.  The results of the day are as follows:

Junior School Awards 

MINI FACTION CAPTAINS  

The Year 2 class teachers and I were delighted that so many students self-nominated for the role of Mini Fac on Captain this week (40 out  of 60 students!).  It was wonderful to see the eagerness they showed in pu ng themselves forward and having a go.  We certainly heard  some very well thought out speeches.  Well done everyone!   Congratula ons to the following students who were elected by their peers to be our Mini Fac on Captains for 2020:  Blue (Rice):  Caitlin Mo  and Emme  Sammels  Gold (Buggy):  Rachael Deering and Gabriel van Heerwaarden  Green (Bosco):  Eloise Hill and Lachlan Cikarela   Red (McAuley):  Roisin Gillespie and James Holzheimer  As ‘Mini Captains’ they will enjoy some of the responsibili es associated with their role in the weeks leading up to our Sports Carnival  on Thursday 10 September.  This includes helping Mr Nguy set up the necessary sport equipment for the Year 2 games during Physical  Educa on lessons as well as ini a ng further prac ce at lunch  mes amongst students.  During the Carnival they will be encouraged to be ac ve in the Fac on bays by leading the cheering, assis ng the teachers and se ng an example of expected behaviour for other students to follow.  Ms Sabrina D’Cruze Head of Preparatory School

Friends of Frayne OUR CUPBOARDS ARE OPEN  

It was fantas c to be able to open up our cupboards at the Balmoral Street Campus this week to provide tea, coffee and biscuits at our Kindy Speech Screening Info Evening.  It’s been a while since we’ve been able to provide this kind of hospi-tality.  Thank you to Heather Fraser and Jess Pochintesta for organising and as always, Lee Barker for his assistance.

Triple P Posi ve Paren ng Program
