Message Dear MTSU Fraternity and Sorority Life Community, As we continuously work to advance the fraternal movement at MTSU, the 2011-2012 academic year served as a call to ac-tion. The fraternity and sorority life strategic plan challenged members to reflect upon their fraternal values and make their actions congruent with the core of their organizations. Many answered that call without hesitation, and some continue to ponder while others ignore the opportunity to elevate theor organizations to new heights. The Office of Fraternity and So-rority Life Annual Report allows the fraternal community the chance to think deeply about the past year and how each indi-vidual and organization can do their part to move the community forward. Below are some of the community highlights:

The Greek Orientation Team (GO) was formed to represent the entire fraternity and sorority community at CUSTOMS, Greek Parent Brunch, and various other community events. The team was trained extensively during the spring in an effort to be prepared to answer any and all questions regarding fraternity and sorority life at MTSU.

The fraternity and sorority community sponsored Dancing through the Decades to support the Circle of Sisterhood. The community collectively raised over $1,800 to empower women through education.

The Interfraternity Council created a subgroup to focus on recruitment and values based leadership. This group, the Greek Leadership Team, served as a positive representation of the IFC community as well as a springboard for values based conversations surrounding recruitment.

Expansion efforts are alive and well! Sigma Phi Beta Fraternity initiated new members in the spring and are currently working through the Multicultural Greek Council’s expansion process to gain membership. Additionally, Sigma Beta Rho, Phi Iota Alpha, and Delta Phi Lambda have all expressed interest in gaining membership in the MGC. The Inter-fraternity Council is currently working with Phi Delta Theta and Phi Kappa Tau to solidify their expansion plans.

The Office of Fraternity and Sorority Life partnered with Northwestern Mutual, Campus Crusade, and other campus constituents to further the values conversation among the fraternal community. This will be a continuous conversation as we move into year two of the strategic plan.

We had many changes on Greek Row. Two chapters made the decision to vacate their houses on Greek Row. Addition-ally, Chi Omega joined Greek Row utilizing the Housing model. There are currently four houses on Greek Row that are managed by House Corporation Boards.

As we begin the 2012-2013 academic year, it is our hope that you will keep the momentum and advance fraternal values on the campus of MTSU. The community is yours to make great or you can choose to be a bystander and allow it to struggle. We hope that you will choose to invest in your fraternity and community in an effort to leave a long and rich legacy for those behind you. As you reflect upon this report, we ask that you think critically about your role in creating a productive and positive fraternity and sorority community. Thank you for your supporting the fraternal movement and the Fraternity and Sorority community at MTSU. Interfraternally,

Angela King Taylor Dave Sullivan Director Coordinator

SOUTHEASTERN PANHELLENIC CONFERNCE Executive Members of the MTSU Panhellenic Council, traveled to Atlanta, GA for the annual meeting of the Southeastern Panhellenic Association. The women at-tended various sessions on how to improve our frater-nity and sorority community and the Panhellenic Council. They also attended sessions on effective lead-ership, sisterhood, and making the most of your sorori-ty experience.

ASSOCIATION OF FRATERNAL LEADERSHIP AND VALUES Council leaders attended the annual Association of Fraternal Leadership and Values Conference held in St. Louis, MO. Council-specific programming targets fra-ternity and sorority governing leaders and their advi-sors. It also serves as a forum to discuss current cam-pus events and issues that impact all members of the fraternity and sorority community. The conference was held in conjunction with the National Black Greek Leadership Conference.

GREEK ORIENTATION TEAM The Greek Orientation Team is new to the MTSU Fraternity and Sorority Community. The members selected for the Greek Orientation Team serve as ambassadors for the fraternity and sorority commu-nity. These members represent the community, promote the benefits of joining an organization, and focus on values congruence. This year’s members include Kimberly Albritton (Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Inc.), Zachery Dupwe (Kappa Sigma), Amber Hays (Alpha Chi Omega), KaDeadra McNealy (Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc.), Erik Merchant (Pi Kap-pa Phi), Rebecca Neely (Alpha Delta Pi), Moriah Rosser (Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc.), Taylor Thompson (Alpha Chi Omega), and Miranda Vil-lanueva (Kappa Delta).

FRATERNAL VALUES SOCIETY The Nu Chapter of The Fraternal Values Society chartered at MTSU in the fall of 2011. The Fraternal Values Society exists to provide a home for conver-sation, to provide voice to the values movement, and to create a sustainable network within each fra-ternal community for those who want their fraternal experience to be representative of the founding fra-ternal/ethical values of our organizations. The char-ter members of the Nu Chapter are Katherine Davis (Alpha Delta Pi), Anna Grace Gerhart (Alpha Delta Pi), Cheri Green (Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority, Inc. ), Kayla Hale (Kappa Delta), Zaver Moore (Alpha Tau Omega), Patrick Morrison (Alpha Tau Omega), Ka-lina Neely (Alpha Delta Pi), Corbyn Payne (Sigma Phi Epsilon), and Eric Pegues (Kappa Alpha Psi).

GREEK LEADERSHIP SUMMIT Chapter leaders attended Greek Leadership Summit sponsored by the Office of Fraternity and Sorority Life in January. Chapter leaders participated in sev-eral educational sessions, received training from Heidi Zimmerman on the topic of sexual assault, and representatives from Northwestern Mutual dis-cussed how to relate values of organizations to real world scenarios.

ORDER OF OMEGA Order of Omega is a honor society for members of fraternities and sororities. The organization recog-nizes juniors and seniors who have exemplified high standards in the areas of scholarship, leader-ship, and involvement within their respective or-ganizations and within the fraternity and sorority, campus and local community. Members are select-ed from the top 3% of fraternity and sorority mem-bers at MTSU. During the fall semester, several Or-der of Omega members participated in Trunk-Or-Treat at the Boys and Girls Club. During the spring semester, members partnered with a local church to collect items for a church in Haiti.

DANCING THROUGH THE DECADES The fraternity and sorority community sponsored Danc-ing through the Decades for Circle of Sisterhood on April 3, 2012. The event displayed fraternity and sorori-ty member’s commitment to service and to empowering women. The Circle of Sisterhood Foundation strives to spread their message that women around the world need access to a quality education in order to remove them from poverty, life threatening diseases and situa-tions. For as little as $13, one girl can be sent to school for one year and for $50 one girl can be sent to school for one year with all the supplies she needs. This year we had 20 registered teams and raised $1,806.50.

THE BIG EVENT Members of the fraternity and sorority community volunteered at the 4th annual The Big Event. This event is sponsored by the SGA and is the largest one-day, student run service project in the nation where students of MTSU will come together to say “thank you” to the residents of Murfreesboro.

BLEED BLUE, BEAT WKU! BLOOD DRIVE Student Programming sponsored a blood drive in October for the Red Cross. Over 150 members of the fraternity and sorority community volunteered at this event.

GOLD STANDARD The Greek Gold Standard was implemented as a tool to assess the level of performance of each of MTSU’s Fraternity and Sorority Organizations. This mandatory assessment rates chapters based on their attainment of benchmarks set in four functional areas – leadership, scholarship, friend-ship and service. The Gold Standard Assessment is a way to hold our MTSU Fraternity and Sorori-ty organizations to the values we all share as members of the Fraternity and Sorority communi-ty. The Gold Standard recognizes those chapters excelling in every facet of Fraternity and Sorority Life at MTSU. Gold Standard chapters met at least 90 percent of the criteria on the Gold Stand-ard Assessment. This chapters awarded Gold Standard this year include Alpha Delta Pi, Alpha Omicron Pi, Alpha Tau Omega, Chi Omega, Kap-pa Delta, Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc., and Sigma Pi. Beginning with the spring 2012 semes-ter, the Gold Standard program will be imple-mented on a semester basis and will be aligned with the Fraternity and Sorority Life Strategic Plan.

NEW MEMBER EDUCATION PROGRAM REQUIREMENTS During the 2011-2012 academic year, the Office of Fraternity and Sorority Life developed and implemented new standards for new member education programming. These new standards were implemented to help reach the goals set forth by the Greek Life Task Force in the Strate-gic Plan for Fraternities and Sororities 2011-2016 at Middle Tennessee State University and to overcome the struggles our community faces related to retention and academics. The stand-ards and minimum expectations are outlined in the new member education packet that all chap-ters must now submit. The most notable change was that new member programming cannot be longer than eight weeks and all new members must be initiated in full.

HAZING PREVENTION Erle Morring, a member of Sigma Nu Fraternity, spoke to members of the MTSU fraternity and sorority community regarding the dangers asso-ciated with hazing and the long term conse-quences such actions can have on organizations and individuals. Laura Sosh-Lightsy from MTSU Judicial Affairs spoke with New Members at the spring New Member Session regarding the dangers of hazing and alcohol abuse. She also detailed the policies that are in place for both of these issues and the consequences that will result from breaking the policies.

RISK MANAGEMENT VIOLATIONS There were 20 IFC risk management violations handled by Judicial Affairs in the following areas: Alcohol Violations, Holding Unauthorized Events, Unauthorized items, and Destruction of Property. There were 2 NPHC Fraternity risk management violations handled by Judicial Affairs in the fol-lowing area: Unauthorized Events. No other groups were found responsible through Judicial Affairs.

JEREMY WILLIAMS Jeremy Williams, a Kappa Alpha Order alumni, spoke to more than 500 members of the fraternity and sorority community regarding alcohol safe-ty. He spoke of his personal journey recovering from his injuries due to an alcohol related accident.

VALUES SPEAKER Britt Pettigrew of Campus Crusade spoke to members at the fall New Member Education Session about the importance of values congru-ence.
