recruitment guide twenty fifteen

a LETTER from the COMMUNITY

On behalf of the Sorority & Fraternity Community, we would like to welcome you to Eastern Washington University! We are truly excited to introduce you to our community and believe that exploring Fraternity & Sorority Life at EWU is one of the best ways to connect with others and find your niche at Eastern. All of our chapters are values based organizations designed to help enrich your college experience, help you grow during your time in college, and make a positive difference in your life after college. Through the recruitment process, you will meet countless men and women. Recruitment is all about helping individuals begin to create lasting connections with individuals across campus.

It is important to remember that each chapter you visit or connect with contains a diverse group of men or women. As leaders in the community, we encourage you to keep an open mind and look at each chapter as a whole. While there may be individual members in every chapter that you gravitate to, it is important to look at the big picture. Will the chapter help you grow? Can you add something to the chapter? Do you like how everyone interacts with one another? Remember, you could be calling these women or men your sisters or brothers!

Our goal is to make sure you have the best recruitment experience possible and provide you with the tools to make the right decision for you in selecting a chapter. Please don’t hesitate to ask questions of community leaders or recruitment guides as we are always willing to help. While recruitment can be a ton of fun, it can also be a time of big decisions. Let us support you through the process. Enjoy your time meeting new people, have fun, and GO EAGLES!

- the fraternity & sorority councils

REASONS TO JOIN A FRATERNITY OR SORORITY

A PLACE TO BELONG - Sorority and fraternity life is grounded in the idea of family – brothers and sisters. Fraternities and sororities provide members the opportunity to connect with fellow students that are interested in helping you adjust to your new college experiences and grow.

INSPIRES YOU TO DEVELOP HIGH STANDARDS - Sorority and fraternity life inspires you to develop as a person by promoting high standards for scholarship, citizenship, and social conduct.

ENCOURAGES COMMITMENT - Sorority and fraternity life pushes you to become a better man or woman. We believe that through membership, members become the best versions of themselves by committing to living their organization’s values on a daily basis.

MANAGEMENT SKILLS - Sororities and fraternities help their members develop time management skills in addition to organizational and decision making skills that will serve you well in the future.

PROVIDES TRAINING - Sororities and fraternities provide training programs aimed at developing your greatest potential.

ENCOURAGES VALUES BASED LIVING - Sorority and fraternity life encourages you to ground yourself in core values. Each chapter is guided by core values and members are expected to uphold those values throughout their life.

ACADEMIC EXCELLENCE - Chapters emphasize academics by providing the right atmosphere and encouraging good study habits. All chapters have an academic plan and work hard to ensure that all members stay on track with their academics.

LEADERSHIP DEVELOPMENT - Chapters promote leadership by encouraging your participation in chapter government, campus clubs and organizations, and open doors to a myriad of leadership opportunities throughout campus.

FOSTERS CONCERN FOR OTHERS - Greek life encourages you to participate in philanthropic and service projects that enable you to grow as a servant leader and help others and the world around you.

DEVELOPS LIFELONG FRIENDSHIPS - Sorority and fraternity life develops and encourages lifelong friendships that grow strong with common experiences and remain true over years to come.

RECRUITMENT tips1. Move beyond the stereotypes and really try to get to know the men/women you meet.2. Get to know the men/women you attend recruitment events with. Regardless of what chapter they join,

you may make a new friend.3. Keep notes on what you do/do not like about the chapters you visit.4. Remember that the chapters are just as nervous as you.5. Wear comfortable shoes and clothing and remember that you are trying to put your best foot forward.6. Try not to get frustrated when you get asked the same questions by several people – they are trying to get to know you!7. Be enthusiastic about meeting new people – even if you do not see yourself becoming their brother/sister.8. Ask questions! You are trying to find the best place for you. • If you are a legacy or know someone in the chapter(s) you are visiting, do not overplay it.

You need to get to know people regardless of your connection to the organization.

QUESTIONS TO ask DURING RECRUITMENT

Recruitment is about engaging in good conversations with the women/men you meet throughout the community. Here are some questions you can ask at the chapters throughout recruitment.

How can I get involved in this chapter?

What activities are you/your chapter involved in?

I am interested in (blank). How are you involved in this organization/major or how can I get involved with it on campus?

What is the time commitment in your chapter?

What is your favorite sorority/fraternity memory?

What are the benefits of being in a sorority/fraternity?

What does your chapter value?

What makes your chapter unique?

What do you think is the best part of being a sorority woman/fraternity man?

What do you enjoy most about being in your chapter?

What was your freshman year like?

What GPA am I required to maintain?

What is your philanthropy?

What does it mean when they say it is a lifelong commitment?

What is your live-in requirement?

What is it like living in?

DIVERSIFIED & NATIONAL PAN-HELLENIC COUNCIL FRATERNITIES & SORORITIESFraternities and sororities affiliated with the Diversified Greek Council do not participate in a formal recruitment process and are culturally based. Fraternities and sororities belonging to the Diversified Greek Council identify new members throughout the year and often engage in a membership intake process semi-annually. If you are interested in a sorority or fraternity connected to the Diversified Greek Council, it is important to be on the lookout for their events, introduce yourself when they are tabling, and reach out to them based on the contact information listed in this book. Like all of our organizations, they are always looking for values based men and women to help them move their organizations and fraternal community forward.

PANHELLENIC Panhellenic Council Sororities: Panhellenic sororities, affiliated with the Panhellenic Council, engage in a formal recruitment process. Students interested in joining a Panhellenic sorority need to sign up to participate in the formal recruitment process prior to September 29th. There is a $75 non-refundable fee to participate in the process. To sign up for Panhellenic Formal Recruitment, visit: https://ewu.mycampusdirector.com. While there are other opportunities to join, this is the best time to see all of the sororities side by side and students have the greatest chance of being invited to join.

WHAT YOU should KNOW ABOUT PANHELLENIC RECRUITMENT

RHO GAMMAS - A recruitment guide or Rho Gamma is a woman who is a member of a sorority chapter at Eastern Washington University. She was selected by her peers and completed an application, interview, and training process to serve as your guide in recruitment. She is a woman who has disaffiliated from her chapter to ensure that you have the support you need during the recruitment process. Disaffiliation means she does not have contact with her own chapter throughout the recruitment process. Rho Gammas have been trained to assist you and to model the Panhellenic spirit.

Recruitment counselors have been through hours of training in preparation for recruitment. These women are educated to answer any question you may have. They aid you in selecting a chapter that is best for your own interests and needs. They are available anytime, day or night, to handle problems and offer guidance in a one-on-one situation. Recruitment guides will keep anything you tell them in confidence so you can be open with them about your experience during recruitment.

Recruitment can be a hectic and exciting time. If you get frustrated, collect your thoughts and talk to your Rho Gamma. Feel free to confide in them, make friends with them, ask them questions – they are here to help you and support your journey!

MUTUAL SELECTION PROCESS - Recruitment is a mutual selection process that balances the preferences of each potential new member with those of the existing sorority chapters. The Panhellenic Council strives to allow every young woman an opportunity to find a sorority that best suits her personality, interests and future goals, while providing an organized and unbiased membership selection process for the chapters.

Invitations are only guaranteed to potential new members for the first round, which begins on Thursday and concludes on Friday. There is no guarantee that a PNM will be invited to attend the second (Saturday) or third (Sunday) event rounds. Invitations to subsequent rounds are made based on the selections of the chapters and the preferences of the potential new members. PNM schedules will be maximized so they are able to meet with as many chapters as possible during their recruitment experience.

Please remember there is always a risk that you will not receive a bid to join a sorority. However, if you go through the week, attend all the events with an open mind, progress to the third event round and list each of the chapters you are invited to in the third event round on your preference sheet that night, you will receive a bid.

There is no specific formula that explains why a woman is released from a particular chapter or why a woman prefers one chapter more than another. The Panhellenic Council makes every effort to allow each potential new member the best opportunity to join the sorority of her choice, but there are no guarantees a young woman will be placed within that specific sorority. It is important to keep an open mind during recruitment week and to use the time to meet and make new friends!

CONTINUOUS OPEN BIDDING - Continuous Open Bidding (COB) is an informal recruitment process that takes place after full-structured recruitment in the fall and lasts until the end of the spring quarter. Any woman who wishes to participate will need to fill out the continuous open bid form on EagleSync and could be contacted following formal Panhellenic Recruitment if chapters are participating. Sororities may extend a bid to a potential new member at any time if the chapter is eligible for COB and chooses to participate. Some women find this recruitment style less stressful and more laid back. However, not all chapters are eligible to participate in COB.

The Panehllenic Council regulate something called “chapter total.” If a chapter is below total or does not make quota during formal recruitment they are eligible to participate in COB until those spots are filled. The availability within each chapter, as well as the chapters participating in COB, is subject to change at any time. If a chapter is participating in COB, they may extend a bid to a potential new member at any time.

If a woman decides to withdraw from recruitment, she must check out with her recruitment guide and a member of the recruitment staff by completing an exit interview. She must sign an official form to be released from recruitment. If she is interested in COB, she can sign up at that time. Please remember that there is no guarantee that any chapter will be eligible to participate in COB.

FREQUENTLY asked QUESTIONSIs EWU fraternity and sorority life good?Eastern Washington University is proud of the accomplishments of its fraternity and sorority community and supports its continued development. EWU fraternity and sorority members lead the campus in scholarship, philanthropic donations, community service involvement, and leadership opportunities. Fraternity and sorority members typically achieve higher academic standards than their peers and are members or leaders of many other campus organizations.

Are fraternities and sororities like what I see on TV and in movies?Every fraternity and sorority is different and unique. Fraternities and sororities are not as they are depicted on TV, just as relationships and weddings are not as they are on TV. The best way to find out what fraternities and/or sororities are like is to go to a fraternity or sorority event to see for yourself.

If it’s so great, why isn’t everyone in Greek life? Why would someone not join a fraternity or sorority? At the end of the day, joining a fraternity or sorority is about finding your fit. Not everyone is going to feel a connection to our fraternities and sororities and that is okay. We encourage everyone to explore the fraternity and sorority community and to make the decision that is right for them.

Why are there some things fraternity and sorority members can’t talk about? What’s the big secret?Initiation into a fraternity or sorority is an exciting, yet serious, ceremony that conveys the purposes and special values of the respective fraternity or sorority. These ceremonies often are referred to as Rituals. Fraternities and sororities pride themselves on the Rituals that their chapters were founded upon. These Rituals are full of the traditions and values that make the chapters unique. An organization’s Ritual is what links its members to one another. It is a shared experience no matter when or where a member joined. It is important to note that none of these Rituals include hazing or other inappropriate activities.

Why are fraternity and sororities referred to as “Greek” organizations? The names of fraternities and sororities generally consist of two or three Greek letters, often the initials of a Greek motto, which may be secret.

Isn’t joining a Greek organization just like paying for your friends?Fraternities and sororities, just like many other campus groups, do require members to pay specified dues. These dues are used to financially support the everyday activities of the organization. While the opportunity exists to make life-long friends by joining one of these organizations, the dues are required to fund exciting programs for all of their members.

What is the normal size of a chapter?Chapters can range in size from one member to over 85 members. Average chapter size for Interfraternity Council fraternities is around 35, but can range from 10 to 60 or more. Multicultural fraternities and sororities range in size from 1 member to approximately 25. Panhellenic sororities have specific limits in place related to the amount of members they can have. These sororities currently average around 84 members.

Why are some groups called a sorority and others a women’s fraternity? The words fraternity and sorority are used interchangeably for women’s Greek-letter groups. Fraternity is derived from the Greek word ‘phrater’, meaning brother, sister, or clan. ‘Soror,’ the source word for sorority, is Latin and means sister. The word sorority did not come into usage until the late 1800s, and groups founded prior to then are officially incorporated as women’s fraternities. Today the term sorority is used to distinguish women’s groups from men’s groups.

What are the requirements for joining a fraternity or sorority at EWU?Most chapters require that potential members have a minimum GPA of a 2.5 and that they are full-time matriculated students; however some group’s standards may be higher. Each chapter has its own standards of membership regarding academics and it is important that you ask each one what they are.

How do I find the right chapter for me?The best way to decide if a chapter is a good fit is to meet current members and ask questions. Fraternity and sorority information sessions and recruitment events are perfect opportunities to learn more information about each fraternity and sorority to decide if its values are in line with your own.

What is sorority Formal Recruitment? What should I expect?Panhellenic Formal Recruitment, also sometimes referred to as rush, is the formal process by which Panhellenic sororities invite new members into their chapter. At EWU it is held during the fall term, and you must register online before the recruitment process. Formal recruitment is held over four days in which you attend various “parties” at each of the Panhellenic sororities. A party typically lasts one hour, and gives you a chance to learn a little about the chapter and meet some of the women in each. The maximum number of parties you attend depends on which round of recruitment it is. There are three rounds and potential members will be guided by recruitment guides in small groups to each of the sororities.

If I go through recruitment am I guaranteed an invitation to join a fraternity or sorority? No, just as you are trying to figure out which organization you fit best with, chapters are determining which men or women would be the best fit for their organization. Many times this is based on specific criteria such as grades or involvement in campus activities or community service. The best thing you can do is maximize your options by attending as many sorority/fraternity events as possible to allow the chapter members to get to know you on a deeper level. Additionally, if you are not asked to join a chapter, you may try again during another recruitment period and are welcome to ask what you could improve to be a better candidate in the future.

A family member is a member of a fraternity/sorority that is on EWU’s campus what do I do? I am a legacy, do I have to join that organization? Am I guaranteed an invitation from that chapter? It is important to share any legacy information with the group when you are meeting with them or in the application when signing up for sorority recruitment. Each organization has its own legacy policy that defines what constitutes a legacy for their organization as well as how the organization may select for membership. In most cases, being a legacy does not guarantee that you will receive an invitation to join that chapter. Regardless of your connection to a group, we encourage you to explore all the options available to you.

What is a bid?A bid is a formal invitation to join a fraternity or sorority.

My parents do not like the idea of fraternities and sororities, what can I tell them? One of the greatest arguments for joining a fraternity or sorority is that it satisfies the fundamental need to belong. Joining a fraternity or sorority will help to connect you to a group of peers with similar values. Feeling connected will make you more satisfied with your college experience and therefore more likely to succeed and graduate. The Fraternity and Sorority Life website (www.ewu.edu/sfl), the chapter advisor and/or Fraternity & Sorority Life staff are great resources to help address the concerns of your parents.

Do I have to go to all recruitment events? What if I have class, and I need to miss a recruitment event? The best way to find your fit is to attend as many recruitment events as possible. This positions you to make the most informed decision possible. However it is up to you which informal events you choose to attend. You should never skip class to attend a recruitment event. Your education is most important. It may be a good idea to reach out to the organization to let them know you are interested in attending the event but have class. This will not only show them you are interested but that you also value your academics. During Panhellenic Formal Recruitment, you are required to attend all recruitment events as part of the formal recruitment process. However, if you have class please follow the guidelines shared after registration about reporting an absence to the appropriate person. If you miss the round and do not inform accurately, you will be removed from the process.

If I attend a recruitment event, do I have to join? No, many students choose to go through recruitment to meet people and make new friends. Recruitment is the opportunity for you to visit the organizations, get a glimpse of fraternity and sorority life, and assess whether or not you would like to be a part of the EWU fraternity and sorority experience.

What if I turn down a bid I receive? You are within your right to not accept an invitation to join any groups. Fraternities and sororities are looking for members that want to be actively involved in their organization. They’d much rather you decline the membership invitation than join and not contribute. In some cases, specifically within the Panhellenic Formal Recruitment process, this can limit your ability to join another group for a period of time. For specific information regarding accepting bids, please contact the Fraternity and Sorority Life staff.

What are the differences between organizations? What is XYZ fraternity / sorority like? What is the best chapter on campus? All fraternities and sororities at EWU University share the same four core values: Friendship, Service to the Community, Leadership, and Academic Excellence. While these values are consistent between the groups, each group also has its own unique values, personality, expectations of members, and mission. You are encouraged to learn about the values of each group and identify which organization seems like the best fit for you by attending events and asking questions. Additionally, the ‘best’ chapter for one student may be entirely different than for another. It is important that you focus on the best fit for you and which organization makes you feel most welcome and develops you most as a person.

Can I join if I am an athlete?Yes, athletic teams, fraternities and sororities share many of the same values, so it is no surprise that the fraternity or sorority experience is appealing to athletes. The EWU fraternity and sorority community has a number of varsity and club athletes among its members. If you are concerned about time management, share your concerns with the fraternity/sorority leadership and your coach. They should be happy to work with you to develop a plan for successfully managing both responsibilities.

Can I join a chapter if I am a graduate student? Each fraternity and sorority has its own unique policy regarding graduate student membership. It is best to ask the organization directly. However, you are not immediately excluded from the fraternity/sorority experience as a graduate student. If you are looking specifically for an organization open to graduate students, please reach out to the Fraternity & Sorority Life staff.

Can I join a chapter if I am a part-time or online student? Most chapters require that potential members are full-time matriculated students; however some groups may have different policies. Each chapter has its own standards of membership and it is important that you ask each one what they are. If you are looking specifically for an organization open to online or part-time students, please reach out to the Fraternity & Sorority Life staff.

How long will I be a new member? The new member process will vary depending on the organization you choose to join. Most groups’ program lasts between six and eight weeks; however, they may run anywhere from one to twelve weeks. No chapter may exceed twelve weeks of new member education.

I’m a member of a Greek-letter honor society or service organization, can I join a fraternity/sorority too? Social fraternities and sororities should not be confused with the many academic, service and honor societies that operate on campus. Both share Greek letters in their name and have some other similarities, but each serves a different function. It is possible for a student to be a member of a social fraternity/sorority and an academic or honor society.

What should I talk about at the recruitment events? It is important for you to be yourself during recruitment, and let the conversation flow naturally. The organizations are presenting themselves to you just as you are presenting yourself to them. Asking questions is encouraged. Remember, everyone likes to talk to someone who is friendly, has comments to make, and questions to ask.

What if I joined a fraternity/sorority at another campus and transferred to EWU?If you joined an organization that is currently recognized at EWU, connect with the leadership of that chapter as each organization has different policies about transfer members. If your organization is not as EWU, unfortunately you are not able to join another group. However, please contact the Fraternity and Sorority Life staff to let us know you are here so you can be invited to come out to any fraternity/sorority event.

What is new member/intake/pledging?In most chapters after accepting an invitation to join (sometimes referred to as a “bid”), one will enter a period of time referred to as pledging, new member education, associate member education, or intake. This is a period of orientation under the guidance of the initiated members. This is an unforgettable time filled with special events and retreats. It’s the time when you learn about the organization and begin to see the great network that connects all fraternity and sorority members together. You should be sure to take the time to ask about each chapter’s education of associate/new members while going through the recruitment process.

What will I do during new member education/intake?While each organization’s new member/intake process is different, most include the following: new member meetings that include education about the fraternity/sorority, its values, and history; social opportunities for new members to meet each other and members of their chapter; educational workshops on any range of topics such as time management, fraternity/sorority history or study skills; community service; big/little or mentor programs; and formal Rituals.

What’s a fraternity/sorority initiation like? Why is it so significant for members?Initiation into a fraternity or sorority is an exciting, yet serious, ceremony that conveys the purposes and special values of the respective fraternity or sorority. These ceremonies often are referred to as Rituals. Fraternities and sororities pride themselves on the Rituals that their organizations were founded upon. They are full of the traditions and values that make the chapters unique. They are special because they are what binds every member of a particular fraternity/sorority to one another no matter when or where they joined. However, these Rituals should not be confused with hazing and other inappropriate activities.

Will I be hazed?Eastern Washington University, the three Councils, and all chapters have a zero-tolerance policy with regard to hazing. No member is allowed to take part in any form of hazing as a new or current member of his or her chapter. Hazing also is against the state law of Washington.

Who do I speak with if I think I or others are being hazed?Students who feel they are being subjected to hazing are urged to speak up immediately and notify the Fraternity and Sorority Life Staff or the Office of Student Rights and Responsibilities. If you have witnessed or have knowledge of a possible hazing incident in the EWU community, please contact any of the following: Office of Student Rights and Responsibilities 509.359.7924 | [email protected] or Fraternity & Sorority Life 509.359.4711 | [email protected]

What if I join and it’s not the right fit? Can I leave?New members may decide to leave an organization at any point prior to initiation and still be eligible to join another group on campus. While members may also choose to disaffiliate after initiation, at this point they would be unable to join another fraternity or sorority. It is important to use the recruitment period to get to know about the groups so you are certain about your decision and your fit in the group.

What are the responsibilities/expectations for membership in a fraternity/sorority?Expectations and requirements are different for each organization and you should ask about these during recruitment. Typically, fraternities and sororities have expectations/requirements related to the following: GPA/grades, dues, attendance at chapter meetings, involvement in community service, involvement in chapter education and events, and general personal conduct.

What is the time commitment for being involved with a fraternity or sorority? There is no minimum or maximum time that a student must spend with the fraternity or sorority. However, each chapter does have expectations regarding attendance at events and meetings. You should ask about these requirements during the recruitment process. Through involvement with the chapter, such as leadership positions, some students choose to put in more time with their organization. This involvement will help you learn to better manage their time, and balance academics, work and other commitments. Most members find that being active in a fraternity or sorority is well worth the time that they put into it.

How active do I have to be?Your level of involvement in your fraternity/sorority depends on the requirements of the chapter and your interest in differing experiences. Be sure to ask about requirements during recruitment but be aware your experience in a fraternity/sorority is up to you. You can be as involved as you want to. Once a member, you will find that participating in fraternity/sorority events and getting to know your brothers/sisters is something you will really enjoy.

What do the dues pay for?Dues can cover any number of things and will differ from chapter to chapter. Feel free to ask the chapter treasurer what your dues are covering. This information is usually shared annually as part of the budget approval process as well. However, they typically go to pay for local/national insurance coverage, fees to the national organization for administration and programming, chapter operations and programming. Sometimes it may also include ‘extras’ such as t-shirts and fraternity/sorority items. Dues do not pay for alcohol of any kind; alcohol may not be purchased through chapter funds.

What about when I am on study abroad? Do I stay active and pay dues? Some chapters offer discounted dues or special statuses for members studying abroad on a case by case basis.

If I join a sorority or fraternity, can I also get involved in other areas on campus?Fraternities, sororities, and the encourage members to get involved. In fact, members of fraternities and sororities hold key student leadership positions in Student Government, Eagle Entertainment, and other student organizations. Additionally, members serve as Community Advisors and Orientation Leaders.

What do fraternity and sorority members actually do? Fraternity & sorority members are active in hands-on community service, academic and professional development programs, philanthropic fundraising, cultural education, and leadership experiences.

What leadership opportunities does Greek life provide? The EWU fraternity and sorority community provides numerous opportunities to take on leadership roles within the chapter and outside of it. Multiple skills such as time management, communication, and interpersonal are all strengthened by leadership positions.

What networking opportunities are there within Greek life?Networking is a great benefit of fraternity and sorority. There are numerous opportunities to meet many different kinds of people, both in the community and professionals outside it. Alumni events held by the chapters are an excellent way to connect with older members who may be in the same field you are studying or who can connect you with a friend who is. EWU encourages fraternity and sorority members to connect with everyone in the community, not just their own chapter members. This provides an extended Alumni database and an increased number of networking opportunities.

Are fraternities and sororities primarily social in nature?EWU encourages members of the fraternity and sorority community to be very outgoing and to establish relationships with members of other chapters as well as those outside of the fraternity and sorority community. Social events include educational programs/workshops, community service events, intramural sports, Greek Week, and dinners in addition to social gatherings and formals. While the term social may conjure images of Animal House or Old School the image is largely outdated and inaccurate. Although a social aspect is part of the fraternities and sororities, they place a heavy focus on other types of programming including academics, community service, and leadership.

Will Greek membership affect my grades?Joining a fraternity or sorority is a time commitment, but one of the core values of fraternities and sororities is academic excellence. Each chapter sets standards for academic expectations. If members do not meet their requirements, there are several resources available for students to receive assistance. Often chapters organize incentives and awards for the most improved GPAs or the best GPAs. Mandatory study hours and competitions are also very common. At EWU, fraternity

and sorority members’ many chapters and students exceed the non-Greek students GPA. Chapters place tremendous importance on members excelling scholastically and all have academic programs to help members achieve academic excellence. In the last year, over 20% of the community has been on the Dean’s List, achieving a 3.5 or above, each quarter.

Will I lose touch with friends who choose not to join?Fraternity and sorority life is an opportunity to build relationships in addition to those that have already been established. Involvement in a fraternity or sorority does allow plenty of time to focus on academics, join other clubs and organizations, and socialize with friends who are not in the same chapter or who are not involved in the community. EWU encourages fraternity and sorority members to maintain a well-rounded experience through interaction with both Greeks and non-Greeks.

Do all fraternities and sororities have chapter houses? No, not all organizations have chapter houses. Most Panhellenic and Interfraternity Council organizations do have housing. None of the Multicultural Greek Council organizations currently have housing.

If they don’t have houses, where do they meet?Chapters with and without houses typically meet in on-campus spaces reserved through event services.

When can I move into the fraternity/sorority house?Students in their sophomore year and beyond may live in these facilities as spots are available after their first year at EWU.

Will I be required to live in fraternity/sorority housing if I join?Housing requirements are set by the individual chapters in order to fill their facility to capacity. Be sure to ask chapters about housing requirements during the recruitment process.

What are the National Panhellenic Conference (NPC), the National Pan-Hellenic Council, Inc. (NPHC), and the North American Interfraternity Conference (NIC) and other acronyms? These umbrella organizations provide oversight to the individual fraternities and sororities and their chapters, similar to the NCAA does with varsity sports. They advocate for their member organizations at a national level and create standards that their member organizations must uphold.

Who is in charge of each organization? In addition to EWU Student Activities, Involvement, and Leadership Department, each organization also has a faculty/staff advisor and alumni advisor who oversee the chapter. Some chapters also have their own chapter advisory board of alumni/volunteers that assist and advise them. Each of the nationally affiliated organizations has a network of national volunteers and/or paid national staff that oversee the chapters. Many have Leadership Consultant staff that travel to their chapters at least once per year.

Is there a lot of alcohol and substance abuse associated with fraternities?Although the common stereotype is that fraternities and sororities enable binge drinking and reckless behavior, EWU chapters work hard to dispel such stereotypes. Fraternities and sororities are required to follow very strict and detailed risk management policies, which are established by both their respective national organizations and governing councils. The fraternity and sorority community at EWU University focuses on educating men and women on the dangers of binge drinking and of drug and alcohol abuse and in fact follow must stricter policies related to alcohol than the general study body and other student organizations.

What if I do not drink? The decision to drink or not is a very personal one, which most fraternities and sororities will respect. Fraternities and sororities are involved in so many activities and programs that do not involve alcohol that you are sure to have a great time as a member. Additionally, some organizations may actually prefer members who do not drink underage or at all, as it reduces risk and concerns for their leadership. Be sure to ask each chapter about their memberships’ view of alcohol and about the social events they participate in during the recruitment process.

What types of opportunities are there after college?Joining a fraternity or sorority is a lifetime commitment with lifetime benefits. Following graduation, members can find alumni groups from their organization all over the nation. These alumni groups offer the continuation of the friendship and experiences of Greek life.

Does financial aid cover any sorority/fraternity expenses?Cash awards students receive can be applied to room and board in a chapter house. It will be up to the individual student to budget accordingly and pay the chapter they join directly.

If I identify as LGBTQ+, can I join a fraternity/sorority at EWU? Will a fraternity/sorority at EWU welcome me and support me? The short answer is “yes.” The long answer is more complicated and rooted in the history of fraternities and sororities being single sex organizations. At Eastern, there are members of the fraternity and sorority community that openly identify as part of the LGBTQ+ Community and receive tremendous support from their brothers, sisters, and national organizations. At the end of the day, it is about being true to yourself and finding a group of men or women that will accept you for you. Many of our organizations are open to learning, growing, and changing to ensure that all students at EWU feel welcome and have the opportunity to be part of sorority and fraternity life. If you select to go through formal recruitment or attend a recruitment event, ask questions that help you get a feel for how a chapter does or does not embrace diversity. Know that our University and community leaders want to hear about individual experiences so we can continue to help all sororities and fraternities create safe and supportive space for every student interested in joining!

If I am an international student, can I join a sorority/fraternity?All students who are fully matriculated as undergraduate students, as defined by EWU, are welcome to join and participate in recruitment. International students do join our community.
