Page 8: fraternities and sororities

3. Sexism is rampant in the Greek System fraternities take toward women is notoriously

Page 9: fraternities and sororities

4. Hazing gave Fraternities and Sororities a bad name

currently most major Fraternities and Sororities have an active anti-hazing policy

6. “RUSH" - to get a chance to get in to both Fraternities and Sororities

you must pledge, be accepted and finally initiated.

7. "Legacy" = "automatically" accepted because a family member was a member first mother, father, brother or sister

Page 11: fraternities and sororities

8. NOT ALL BAD excellent networking groups for later life, give college students a second "family"

9. Fraternities and Sororities are still elitist newer Greek Organizations are shaking up the

centuries old foundation of snobbery and selectivity (namely, openly gay fraternities and sororities).

Page 12: fraternities and sororities

10. No matter what their reputation, Fraternities and Sororities are here to stay and can be a wonderful part of your university experience, the trick is finding the one that best suits you.

“Joining fraternities is like joining a powerful group in a university. Even though certain risks have been identified, people are still very eager to join to gain power and protection. They are blinded by the privileges offered to them.” Tristan Zantua, 3rd year, Information Technology, University of Santo Tomas

I think it’s because most of them just want to get favors from the brotherhood. Some want prestige since ordinary people seem to regard frat members with a high impression and find them superior or “astig”. Membership in fraternities may protect them from people who attempt to hurt them physically.” Myka Cruz, 2nd year MassCom, Centro Escolar University

“Most people think that joining fraternities can expand their professional network. While most are usually just after the promise of guidance and assistance from their senior frat brothers, others only join fraternities to feel accepted or worse, just to feed their ego. Despite the known dangers of joining fraternities, many believe that the perks that they get from it still make up for any harm that it might cause them.” Jose Miguel Perez, 2nd year proper, Dentistry, University of the East

Reasons why they join the organization:

•Brotherhood and legacy•Lack of Security•Sense of Belongingness

Page 19: fraternities and sororities

Sense of Belongingness

According to Maslow:-humans need to feel a sense of

belonging and acceptance For example: some large social groups may include

clubs, co-workers, religious groups, professional organizations, sports teams, and gangs.

small social connections: family members, intimate partners, mentors, colleagues, and confidants.

need to love and be loved Many people become susceptible to

loneliness, social anxiety, and clinical depression in the absence of this love or belonging element.

may overcome the physiological and security needs

Page 21: fraternities and sororities

Lack of Security

lack security in their own homes. They look for people who will look after them. They think that these people want a boost of

confidence. They usually long for a sense of belonging.

It makes them feel secure. It also may be because they think that

joining fraternities would prove their worth or perhaps they see similarities among themselves and the other members of the group.

Page 22: fraternities and sororities

Cont.

They tend to ignore the numerous consequences that come with it because they know that they will be backed up all the time. If they are the type of troublemakers, they join for greater power.

But sometimes there are people who join frats just to temporarily get rid of their problems.

Page 23: fraternities and sororities

Brotherhood and legacy

misjudged by the public due to the increasing number of cases in hazing, hence there is hasty generalization.

liking for what that fraternity stands for, legacy, brotherhood, professional connections, and other personal reasons.

We should keep in mind that not all fraternities are bad, just like there are good Christians and bad Christians, good Muslims and bad Muslims, and so on.

Page 24: fraternities and sororities

Cont.

Students still join fraternities because of the benefits that they get from it (financially and emotionally).

Despite the risks, they still consider the brotherhood more important than any other physical injuries that they would face. Also, maybe it’s because people can see more of the good purpose of the brotherhood rather than the possible adverse effects.

Page 28: fraternities and sororities

Cont.

Parties--- Fraternity and sorority parties are known for their out of control parties.

Page 29: fraternities and sororities

Initiations---Maybe not all initiations are dangerous, but enough have been publicized to let us know many are not safe (especially fraternity ones.) Hazing. It is quite illegal and can

involve very negative repercussions, including expulsion from school.

Page 30: fraternities and sororities

What Do Hazing Rituals Consist Of?

All Greek fraternities will have hazing rituals and this is deemed necessary for all pledges. However, the rituals are usually

amplified each year and students are made to endure inhumane treatment.

Hazing rituals can be divided into three categories: subtle, harassment and violent.

Page 31: fraternities and sororities

Hazing categories
