It’s hard to believe we are on the steps of closing out another school year already. The end of each year gives us the opportunity to celebrate a graduating class from Fraser High School and embrace the opportunity for our 8th graders to move from Richards Middle School to the high school, and for our 6th graders to FINALLY have the opportunity to attend the middle school. This school year has been filled with initiatives focused on helping our students to become their very best academically and socially, and as an artist, athlete or student leader. We have celebrated their accomplishments and counseled them as they overcame the challenges of growing up in today’s world.

In every instance of interacting with students, as adults, I consider us to be extremely fortunate when our kids allow us to be a part of their journey. As a building principal, I was fully aware of the reality the students didn’t “have” to be nice to me and to let me share in their memories and adventures. Rather, it was a choice for each of them to respond when I said hello or motioned to give them a high five. They had a choice every time to ignore my effort or to respond and to create the opportunity for a relationship to be built.

As we move through the final stages of this school year, I encourage you to take full advantage of the exciting educational opportunities happening in your child’s life at this time. This is a treasured time full of concerts, sporting events, banquets and ceremonies. Cherish each moment your child shares with you and encourage them to savor these memories during a busy, exciting time of year!

M.i.t.e.s. competition Brings top Awards to FHs students

This year’s Michigan Industrial and Technology education Society (M.I.T.e.S.) student project competitions yielded incredible results for FHS students. Once again, the Fraser Ramblers set the bar for participation from a comprehensive high school with over 200 student projects entering the regional competition and 125 making it to the state competition at Saginaw Valley State University. As a result, FHS can enjoy numerous State Champion awards, another Grand award, and over $10,000 worth of scholarship awards from this year’s efforts!

On behalf of Fraser Public Schools, we congratulate these fine students on their efforts. Many have been invested in their projects for a full year leading up to the competition. The final projects were displayed in the Media Center from May 12 to May 16 at Fraser High School, showcasing the creativity and talent of Fraser’s students. Seniors Attend Annual Boilermakers Competition

Four Fraser High School seniors compete annually in the Boilermakers Local 169 High School Welding Competition at the training center in Allen Park. This year, Jacob Justin, edward Dobek-Orkisz, Michael Gordon III, and Matthew Whiteford represented FHS.

Participating in this event earns the students priority placement into their apprenticeship program where they will begin making $26.50/hour. FHS graduate Richard Krall is currently a Boilermakers apprentice and generously came back to Fraser High School, along with past competitors Jake Ripley and Phil Sciriha, to help prepare the seniors for the event.

This year’s competitors performed well against students from three other high school schools and 10 career centers. Senior Matthew Whiteford had a perfect score on the written exam portion of the competition. This is the first time in the history of the competition that a student earned a perfect score.

science Olympiad The Macomb County

Science Olympiad was held on May 3 at Macomb Community College. The Olympiad is dedicated to increasing student interest in the fields of science and engineering, as well as developing problem-solving and teamwork skills. eighty elementary teams from across the county participated in this year's event including teams from Disney, edison and Salk. Teams participated in 16 different events from "A is for Anatomy" to "Zowie estimation." Students and their coaches practiced for months after school in preparation for these events and their time and

efforts paid off. With Disney winning the "Rising Star" award for the most improved team in eight events and coming in 2nd overall, Salk coming in 19th, and edison 25th, Fraser Public Schools is bursting with pride! elementary students across the district studied and practiced with their coaches for months in preparation for this year’s Social Studies Olympiad. The theme this year was “Why Citizenship is Important.” The Fraser school district was represented by teams from Disney, edison, emerson, Salk and Twain. Team members ranged from fourth grade through sixth. Students chose to participate from a large selection of events. Monologue, Storyboard, Artistic Poster, Digital Photo, Quiz Bowl, Collage, Song, Rap, Prezi and Poetry were some of the events chosen. each team won medals at both the district and state levels! FHs students inspired Teens Talking Truth (T3) and the Fraser

Community Action Team (FCAT) welcomed Brad and Donna Jones to speak to Fraser High School juniors and seniors regarding the hazards of drinking and driving. Brad’s account of his altered life path from a drunk-driving crash is both tragic and inspirational. His important story was shared with the FHS students just days before prom. Students lined up after the presentation to thank Brad and Donna and shared words of encouragement.

FHs student Musicians Attend Michigan Youth Arts Festival

Student musicians Bradley Arnold, Patrick Score and Jared Montgomery represented Fraser High School as participants of the 52nd annual Michigan Youth Arts Festival, held May 8–10 at Western Michigan University in Kalamazoo. The Michigan Youth Arts Festival is the culmination of a nine-month search for the finest artistic talent in Michigan high schools. More than 250,000 students statewide participate in the selection process that results in 1,000 being invited to take part in the annual three-day arts spectacular. At the Michigan Youth Arts Festival, exceptional student artists participate in 50 master classes, workshops, live performances and exhibits that are tailored to their individual artistic discipline. Not only is it an experience to enrich their own artistic craft, but also an opportunity to celebrate their peers. From the concert recitals and visual art exhibit, to the film festival and theatrical performances, The Michigan Youth Arts Festival is a memorable event that students will fondly remember throughout their artistic careers. cPr certification with HOsA

HOSA members will put their CPR skills to use as they help teach FPS staff members Adult CPR on May 29. Limited spots are still available for the class, which will run from 2:30 p.m. until 6:00 p.m. on May 29 in room 1212. The cost is $30, which includes a certificate from the American Red Cross. HOsA teddy Bear repair clinic

Fraser HOSA and FCCLA members teamed up for the annual Teddy Bear Repair Clinic at the Dooley Family Fun Nights. This fun-for-all event gave Dooley students the opportunity to bring a stuffed friend to the “clinic” for a check-up. Future Health Professionals examined the “patients” and made treatment recommendations. Sometimes “surgery” was in order to repair injuries, and sometimes a bandaid, sticker, hugs and ice cream were needed for healing.

Disney 6th graders are beginning to work on a new project. They are writing Poetry Portfolios,

for the month of April, Poetry Month. They started by reviewing various styles of poetry, writing samples following these traditional formats, and taking poetry quizzes with the use of the classroom edmodo app.

In the portfolios there will be a total of 10 compositions — five required poem formats and five poems of student choosing. The five essential poems are an alliteration (aka, tongue twister), a Cinquain (a five-lined poem using parts of speech), a Color Poem (a poem about a color or collection of colors also including the use of imagery) or Sense Poem (a poem using the five senses while incorporating imagery), a Haiku (a traditional Japanese poem consisting of three lines focusing on a syllable count of five, seven and five), and a Limerick (a silly poem telling a story, more like a song following a particular rhyme pattern). The poems that students choose can be any type of poetry!

Poetry is not something that is required in the 6th grade reading and writing curriculum, but it is important to teach to 6th graders. Students can learn from poetry — how to incorporate similes, metaphors, figurative language, and more interesting vocabulary into everyday writing. It is a creative and fun way to write, and the students have done astonishingly well with writing their personal poems! The students will be presenting their poems at the end of the month to their peers. They can make physical books, digital books on the iPad, a prezi, a slideshow — any way students choose to share their poetry and creations!

Students at eisenhower elementary performed a special flash mob at recess on Friday, May 16. Led by the second-grade classes at recess, students danced and sang along to the song “Happy” while the rest of the student body joined in!

emerson student on National tVA kindergarten student from emerson elementary made her national television debut this

month. Sienna Hawkins from Roseville was selected as “Good Morning America’s” miniature look-a-like for host Robin Roberts.

Sienna and several of her family members traveled to New York on May 13. Once at Good Morning America’s studio, Sienna and the other contest winners got to work filming and practicing together for their TV appearance.

“The atmosphere of TV life was so fun! She had a blast,” said Sienna’s mother, Danielle Hawkins.

While in New York, Sienna was able to make friends with the other contest winners, attend a movie premier, and interview actor and comedian Adam Sandler. Sienna’s favorite part, however, was a special trip to the American Girl store with her family.

Sixth graders at Disney elementary School do so many great things throughout the year. One of those amazing opportunities we’ve had the pleasure of doing this year is writing back and forth between our new friends at the American Pacific School in Phnom Penh Cambodia! We have had the pleasure of learning about a new culture and their customs. We have been introduced to their many temples that are a huge tourist attraction, and some even sent samples of their money, which we did as well. We have also learned some ways in which we are very similar. Our Cambodian friends have a lot of related items like iPads and popular game consoles. We have also found we share many of the same interests like reading, watching movies, listening to music, and so much more. It has been a great experience and we cannot wait for

Dooley Family Fun Night

Dooley families enjoyed fun, food, fellowship and games at their annual Family Fun Night. There was special entertainment from Scooby Doo, Doc McStuffin and Clifford!

edison Uses App For Math

edison first-grade students used the Show Me iPad app to teach classmates how to add and subtract two digit numbers. Their video lessons were both educational and entertaining!

Pasta for Penniesemerson’s student council participated in the Olive

Garden’s Pennies for Pasta program benefitting the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society for two weeks during April. By collecting spare change, the school was able to donate $1,181.09 to the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society! Mrs. McGinnis’ kindergarten classroom raised the most money and was treated to a pasta party from Olive Garden.

salk science FairSalk’s second graders and their families were invited to a fun-

filled science night. FCCLA and Student Council members from the high school volunteered to assist with the Salk Science Fair and the 11 stations prepared for the guests. There were many “make and take” projects including glow-in-the-dark bracelets, constellation maps, and make-your-own slime. There were also some other great stations that the students enjoyed, including insect station, with a hissing Madagascar cockroach that the students could hold. It was a great event!

Volleyball Youth camp

A special five-week Volleyball Youth Camp was held in FPS this spring. A total of 68 elementary campers from the six elementary schools attended the camp. Overall the camp was a huge success and the campers are looking forward to attending the All Skills Camp in June.

Aces Day On May 15, edison students and

teachers participated in a worldwide event called ACeS — All Children exercising Simultaneously. Ms. Wiedyk and Dr. Weiss led various exercises and dances to get everyone moving. A great time was had by all!

eisenhower supports the community

eisenhower elementary is sponsoring a unique program, Grow ‘Ums Grow Your Own Garden fundraiser, in order to support the community. The money raised from this program will be used to support the partnership created with Macomb Fresh and the Hope Center on Groesbeck. Students will grow a sustainable food crop that will then be given back to the Hope Center once it is time to harvest the vegetables over a year from now. They are starting now because in the fall, they will be preparing a plot of land on eisenhower property to grow the crops in the spring of 2015. With the help of Macomb Fresh, The Hope Center, local 4H clubs, Ike students, the environmental Club, and the community, they will maintain the garden throughout the summer of 2015, with an expected harvest time of August and September of 2015.

eisenhower’s FisH! celebrationOn May 7, eisenhower celebrated their 3rd

FISH! Celebration of the year. Students were recognized for displaying positive traits of the FISH! Philosophy which are to:

These are all part of positive school climate that has been created at eisenhower where the goal is to make productive, respectful citizens of our students both in school and out.

Junior chef Pizza Day

To finish up their food and nutrition unit, Mrs. Debruyn’s special education class visited Fraser High School to see what a big kitchen looks like. First, they got a tour of the kitchen and serving areas at FHS cafeteria. Then, with the help of some friends from HOSA, they were able to create their own pizza. The kids had a blast working with the food and learning how it all gets done in the high school’s cafeteria.

Edison Ice Cream Social

The edison Ice Cream Social was another great success, thanks to all of our wonderful volunteers. The boys and girls played tons of fun games and ate delicious ice cream sundaes. each class created a basket and they were all raffled off to very excited students. A wonderful time was had by all!

safari winnersCongratulations to Disney students

Sydney Zombo and Megan Lemmon who won first place in their event, Wildlife Safari, at the Macomb Science Olympiad. The Detroit Zoo gives a special prize, a week-long safari camp, to the first-place winners in this category as part of their sponsorship of the Science Olympiad. The students will be able to choose from a variety of camps and will be able to see the tremendous efforts that go on behind the scenes that are invisible to the average zoo visitor.

ike electronic recycling Day

eisenhower families and staff members gathered at the school on May 17 to collect unused electronic equipment from the community. Items included old computers, keyboards, ink cartridges and more. Computer Recyclers safely disposed of the collected items. The event supported the building’s environmental Club.

eisenhower and Henry Ford Provide Pe-Nut Program

eisenhower elementary is working with Henry Ford Health System to provide the Pe-Nut program for students. The program stands for Physical education and Nutrition education

working together and consists of simple and consistent nutrition and physical activity messages. Henry Ford is working with grades 3–6 during their normal 40-minute HeART classes on Tuesdays and Thursdays.

Ike Students Visit Deneweth’s Nursery

Second-grade students from eisenhower elementary visited Deneweth’s Nursery. The visit is a wonderful 2nd-grade field trip that goes hand-in-hand with the science curriculum. The staff took students through four sections of the nursery. Students were able to plant a flower, learn about flower anatomy, and tour the greenhouse to learn about all the different types of plants grown there. Finally, they toured the back of the greenhouse where they used automated machinery to prepare the seedlings. Students also learned about the different irrigation systems used at the nursery. The students loved the back end tour the most. They were fascinated by the machinery and irrigations systems.

Autism Awareness Night

A special thanks to the Fraser community who supported the Autism Awareness Night held last month at Buffalo Wild Wings. A total of $250 was raised to support the cause. Pictured is the Salk Special education staff wearing shirts donated by the Macomb/St. Clair Autism Society.

RMS Walk-a-thon winners had a special treat on Friday, May 16. A stretch limo came to front of Richards Middle School to pick up

the winners, along with Mrs. Carrier and Mrs. Murray. everyone piled into the limo for a fun-filled afternoon which included stops at 7-11 and Partridge Creek.

environmental club at eisenhower Makes an impact

The environmental Club at eisenhower participates in many building environmental projects such as the planting of trees and flowers native to Michigan on the eisenhower property. This activity also helps the school maintain its Michigan Green Schools status in the county. Mr. Metty, Principal of eisenhower, said, “We are grateful for the work that Mr. Trudeau and the environmental Club do for our school, the community and the environment.”

went on tour in the District performing for the elementary schools. The performances amazed both the students and staff at each building. Teachers were thrilled to see their former students, and choir members were excited to visit their elementary schools!

This is the second year for the Richards Middle School Show Choir. There are 30 seventh and eighth graders in the group. Nic Charland is the director. Most are in choir during the school day, with six students who are unable to take choir and have chosen to dedicate their time to the group.

Fraser Youth choirThe Fraser Youth Choir recently performed for all the elementary schools in the District. The

Fraser Youth Choir is in its 17th year and was once called Young Knights. The group is made up of 100 fifth and sixth graders from across the District. Nic Charland has been the director since September 2009. Karen Hagerty has been involved with the group for over 10 years as a director and accompanist and this year they welcomed Mike Perkins to the group as a director. Giulia Wagner, FHS class of 2012, is the choreographer for both the Fraser Youth Choir and RMS Show Choir. The group’s performance delighted staff and students across the District.

• Symphonic Ensemble: Silver Rating (plaque) (combined band and choir)

• The Maestro Award: Awarded to Bradley Arnold (12th) for being selected by the adjudicators as an outstanding soloist (Jazz band) at the festival.

• The Maestro Award: Awarded to Patrick Score (11th) for being selected by the adjudicators as an outstanding soloist (Jazz band) at the festival.

• In total, the Fraser Music Department earned FIVe awards and TWO First Place rankings in competition with school music programs from around North America (United States and Canada).

• Ninety-seven student musicians (42 band and 55 choir) represented the Symphonic ensemble in a combined performance of Mozart’s “Requiem” (Introduction, Kyrie, a nd Lacrimosa), arranged by our very own Mr. Nic Charland, and “The Music Makers” by James Curnow

• Twenty-one students performed in the Jazz Band

• Fifty-five students performed in the Fraser Singers Show Choir

Families Against Narcotics speaker Presents to FHs Health students

each semester a presenter from FAN (Families Against Narcotics) visits the 10th-grade Health classes about the hazards of drug use. The stories are real and very personal and the students appreciate the sincerity of the speakers. This semester, Andrew Fortunato from FAN visited the classes to give a first-hand account of the effects of drug use.

super Hero lunch DayFraser students and staff celebrated “Super Hero Lunch Day” on May 5 by honoring the Food

Service Staff. To thank them for their dedication to creating nutritious and delicious meals, students and staff made signs, cards and special treats. The Food Service staff was very appreciative and touched by all that was done for them. Pictured is the high school staff proudly wearing their “Super Hero Lunch” shirts.

Do You want Fries with that?

On May 13, the eisenhower elementary staff worked the drive-thru and main restaurant at the 15 Mile and Utica McDonald’s to raise money for the school. Mr. Metty, eisenhower’s principal, commented, “While making shakes, ice cream cones and fries are not our main forté, we still had a great time seeing the many families and friends that came to support eisenhower elementary School.”

A manager at McDonald’s explained that he had eisenhower’s staff making fries and smoothies, working the front counter, handing out orders, and greeting customers. According to the manager, they had a great turnout, the crew had a great time with the teachers, and McDonald’s is planning to invite the teachers back again soon.

PBS NewsHour Student Reporting Labs announce five Journalism All-Stars nationwide to take part in a summer workshop in Washington, D.C. Fraser High School senior Andrew Sokolowski has been selected as one of only five students from across the country who will be flown to Washington to take part. Andrew and the other students will help with the discussion and development of the Student Reporting Labs project. More information about the Student Reporting Labs and the All-Stars can be found at the NewsHour site.

Andrew has won awards in state, local and national competitions for a variety of productions including: news reports, PSAs, short films, silent movies and documentaries. Andrew’s passion is filmmaking and plans to attend university next year and continue his studies in the art of film. Andrew wraps up his high school career with this selection as a PBS All-Star, Pillars of excellence from the National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences, several awards from the Michigan Interscholastic Press Association, and many others. Andrew has also been recognized by Representative Sander Levin for his selection as a PBS SRL All-Star.

Fraser teacher Honored

Fraser High School’s very own Roger Drabant was honored on May 9 at the Specs Howard School of Media Arts in Southfield. Specs Howard held the third annual Media educator of the Year luncheon where teachers from around the tri-county area were recognized for their efforts in education. Congratulations Roger!

inquiry FairAs part of the culmination of the 1984 Inquiry

Project, FHS english 11 students participated in an “Inquiry Fair” during their english 11 classes on May 14 and May 15. This first-time event was held in the Writers’ Studio, and students were stationed at tables with their partners, ready to give two- to three-minute mini-presentations about their inquiry questions, research and findings. This was the final piece after three weeks of collaboration, research, writing and creating. The english 11 students presented to an audience of teachers, administrators and students from other classes.

Honors convocationOn May 15, Fraser High School seniors were honored at the annual Honors Convocation

ceremony. The event recognized the Class of 2014’s Valedictorian and Salutatorians, as well as the Summa Cum Laude, Magna Cum Laude and Cum Laude students. In addition, students who received awards and scholarships were also honored.
