Nestled aside the northern shores of Lake Champlain, Franklin County has long been regarded as home to Vermont’s most picturesque vistas. There are the sparkling waters of the lake, the bucolic farmlands, and the incomparable views of Jay Peak and Mount Mansfield, just to list a few.
Our environment is a key part of the reason Vermont enjoys the reputation of being the nation’s healthiest state. Our bike paths lace the countryside. Our waters are used recreationally 12 months a year. Our people are outgoing and connected to the physical environment around them and they are quick to give visitors their insights as to what there is to do, and enjoy.
This is made easy since we are ideally situated between Burlington and Montreal and within a stone’s throw from the Jay Peak mega-resort and Smuggler’s Notch.
And visitors enjoy the endless variety of our shops, and they relish sampling locally sourced fare. In St. Albans, the county’s population center, people are astounded by the radical transformation of our downtown into a regional destination, a downtown that is now regarded as one of the most progressive in Vermont.
Towns in Franklin County include: Bakersfield, Berkshire, Enosburg, Fairfax, Fairfield, Fletcher, Franklin, Georgia, Highgate, Montgomery, Richford, Sheldon, St. Albans and Swanton. Our county’s population continues to grow and has now topped 48,000, making us the fifth
largest county in Vermont.
This publication highlights many of the activities that distinguish our region for its unique summer, fall
and winter recreational activities. Our beauty is marked by the physical attributes that
define us and the character of the people who call Franklin County, Vermont their home.
We trust you will enjoy your stay in Franklin County and we invite you back.
WELCOMEto Northwest Vermont!

ART & CULTURE
YOU’LL FIND IT HEREDrawn by the beauty and unique culture of Vermont, numerous artists, artisans, musicians and writers call Northwest Vermont home and do so in ways that truly enrich the landscape and community.
Visitors here enjoy the work of painters and sculptors at area galleries, such as The Frame Shoppe in St. Albans, Artist in Residence Gallery in Enosburg Falls and the Red Barn Studio in Montgomery.
Numerous artisans have shops throughout the county, some open to visitors. Others display their work at gift shops, such as Just the Place in downtown St. Albans, while Mountain Fiber Folk in Montgomery features the work of local spinners and knitters.
In Enosburgh, local artist David Stromeyer has created a unique experience at Cold Hollow Sculpture Park. This 200-acre installation of massive steel sculptures is in a beautiful natural setting crossed by mowed paths. Stromeyer’s leaps of imagination make for an inspirational outing unique to Northwest Vermont.
Music lovers can find free summer concerts in parks in Highgate and St. Albans, as well as performances at area restaurants, which often feature weekend performances in a tasty range of musical styles.
The must-attend Jig in the Valley held in July in East Fairfield is a day long showcase for local bands and
musicians. This music-lover’s dream day features funk, folk, jazz, bluegrass, blues and country acts and it’s a great opportunity to mingle with area residents as they celebrate local talent and kick up their heels.
East Fairfield is also home of the Old Meeting House on the Green, a more than 100-year-old landmark that today features a wide range of musical events as the locals group continues to restore and preserve this historic building.
Theater, too, is on offer locally. Franklin County boasts two regional theaters, the Enosburg Opera House and the Fairfax Community Theater Company.
The work of local writers, including history, fiction and memoirs, is offered at bookshops such as The Eloquent Page in St. Albans. Used books and collectibles can also be found at Sherlock’s Books and Collectibles in Enosburg Falls.
The Celebration of Expressive Arts brings together artists of all kinds—visual, musical and literary – on the last Sunday of the month from April to November. The events are hosted by The Inn in Montgomery.

There are eight stages of development during a person’s life.* The life cycle begins with the infant stage and progresses to toddler/early childhood, followed by the preschooler and school-aged child stages, growing into adolescents then transitioning into young adult, followed by middle-age adult and finally, the older adult stage.
Each stage of development is marked by conflict for which a successful resolution will result in a favorable outcome.
No matter what stage of development someone is in, it’s comforting to know that you can turn to Northwestern Counseling & Support Services (NCSS) in your time of need. NCSS provides intervention and a continuum of support to individuals experiencing emotional and behavioral problems, mental illness and developmental disabilities.
* According to Erik Erikson (1902-1994), a noted Danish-German-American developmental psychologist, every person must pass through a series of eight interrelated stages over the entire life cycle.
Creating astronger community
one person at a time.

LOVE NATURE?You’re in the right placeAnyone in search of beautiful landscapes, stress-releasing brushes with nature and fun outdoor activities will find themselves right at home in Northwest Vermont.
The area is ideally situated along Lake Champlain, dotted with rolling hills, mountains, fields, streams and wildlife. Among them all are plenty of opportunities for recreation.
Want a good bike ride, run or walk? Head over to the Missisquoi Valley Rail Trail, a meandering and well-maintained 26-mile-long path (actually designated as a Vermont State Park) running through farm fields, woods and along the banks of the Missisquoi River between St. Albans and Richford, which is situated right at the Canadian border.
Other trails abound across the county including the Swanton Recreation Path, a one-mile gravel trail spanning the Swanton Elementary School and the Swanton Historical Museum, crossing the Missisquoi River along the way. Visitors can get up close to the river by walking the Brownway River Trail in Enosburg Falls, a 0.9 mile path off of Dickinson Avenue.
Island lovers can take the ferry from Hathaway Point to Burton Island, a small piece of summery paradise in St. Albans Bay that offers beaches, walking paths, a nature museum and a store offering snacks and more. Catch the ferry at Kamp Kill Kare, a state park with roots in local history and a historic building all its own.
Burton Island and Kamp Kill Kare are just two of a number of state parks in Franklin and Grand Isle Counties. Anyone can enjoy hiking, fishing, swimming and a number of other fun activities
at the Alburgh Dunes, Grand Isle, Knight Island and Knight Point, Lake Carmi, North Hero and Woods Island state parks.
Nature buffs can head over to the Missisquoi National Wildlife Refuge in Swanton, a 6,700-acre area of woodlands, wetlands and bogs home to migratory and nesting birds and other wildlife. It’s widely heralded as a bird-watcher’s paradise and its spacious visitor’s center offers numerous nature displays.
A little farther north is the Goodsell Ridge Fossil Preserve, a property in Isle La Motte where the former Chazy Fossil Reef and trilobites, cephalopods and many other sea-creatures once lived in the Iapetus Ocean. The reef, still visible 480 million years later with fossils imprinted on the preserve’s rocks, has been named by scientists as the oldest biologically diverse reef in the world.
For anglers, fishing is abundant on the Trout and Missisquoi rivers, Lake Champlain and Lake Carmi. Ice fishing is especially popular in the colder months, when snowmobiles, trucks and sleds venture out onto the frozen water.
Those souls brave enough to experience cold, snowy northern Vermont winters are also rewarded by opportunities for skiing, skating and sledding. Hard’ack Recreation Area in St. Albans can accommodate all three, though more adventurous skiers will want to try out the nearby Jay Peak Resort, which also boasts an indoor waterpark.
Bordering Canada, Jay Peak offers two mountains, 78 trails and backcountry skiing. It’s also right down the road from Montgomery Adventures on Deep Gibou Road, where Keith and Lori Sampietro offer dog sledding, winter hiking and camping.

While the scrumptious goodness of dairy, maple and apples reign supreme, there’s something for everyone in the Northwest Vermont food scene. Here, the wealth of wholesome food suppliers who nurture the vibrant good and local offerings is well-documented.
Milk, cheese and ice cream are unavoidable favorites in an area that’s home to numerous farms, cow-dotted fields and Enosburg Falls, the self-proclaimed “Dairy Capital of the World.”
In addition to the annual Vermont Dairy Festival in early June, creemee (translation: a creamy twist of soft ice cream) stands are sprinkled through out the area. Almost all, if not every stand uses a mix created by the St. Albans Dairy Cooperative, and in keeping with the area’s second favorite product (maple), maple creemees are most popular.
It should also be noted that local dairies provide the delicious and GMO-free cream used in the manufacturing of Ben & Jerry’s Premium Ice Cream – a product known and loved around the globe.
St. Albans bills itself as “the Maple Capital of the World.” The community is at the heart of the largest maple-producing county
in the nation. Every April, a local festival celebrates maple and its many delicious uses – the best of the state’s maple syrup is judged, and a Best Maple Cook is crowned, too. Next year will mark the Vermont Maple Festival’s 50th anniversary of food, entertainment, shows and fun.
The annual festival aside, maple can be found year-round at local stores and farm stands, where the region’s prized maple syrup, maple sugar cakes and maple cream are sold with pride.
In Grand Isle County, apple orchards abound and each fall they attract thousands of visitors who pick their own favorites, buy from stands filled to the brim with red beauties, and sample sweet cider, cider donuts and gorgeous pies. Franklin County, too, has orchards.
Value-added food products are growing in number and distribution locally. An event to showcase the area’s best and tastiest items, “In Good Taste,” is held each year in January at St. Albans City Hall. Cheeses, truffles, local beers and wines, homemade pies and pasta, fancy bakery confections, vegetable spreads, gourmet chocolates and specialty meats are just some of the offerings parceled out for your enjoyment.
In the warmer months many of these items can be found at farmers’ markets in St. Albans (every Saturday morning) and beyond. Local Fare, in downtown St. Albans, is a unique storefront where local producers gather in stalls year-round to market the fruits of their labor. Opened in 2014, Local Fare is just one of many examples of the region trying to support and encourage value-added product business.
Where there’s food, there’s drink, and along with the rest of Vermont, Franklin County has embraced the craft-brewed, specialty beer movement. Those looking for unique brews, which are touted across the state and region, can visit the veteran-run 14th Star Brewing Company in St. Albans or the local restaurants that serve up its much-heralded beers.
In addition to beer, this region serves up some stronger stuff. Anyone with a hankering for specialty, low-production and one-of-a-kind distilled spirits can visit Elm Brook Distillery in East Fairfield. Nestled in the county’s rural hills, David Howe creates maple vodka and a barrel-aged maple spirit with names inspired by his French, Braque hunting dogs.
